Things To Do In San Diego: Thursday, November 21- Thursday, November 28, 2024: ADULT. | Lucero| Orion Sun| Rise Against| The Surfrajettes} SUUNS| HONNE| Gothsgiving|

It feels like I learned nothing with all my COVID coverage. I had a cold last week, then started feeling better again, so I did all the things, and then you kinda get knocked out again. However, I have noticed that I feel great in the daytime with just some dayquil and lots of fluids and being outside, and then when I'm home, the congestion hits, so maybe that's wall-to-wall carpet thing irritating my sinuses and less of 'sickness'. Regardless, I stocked up on new masks, though I was sad to see Costco no longer carries the N95s we loved, and am trying to mind my space from people as much as I can.
I haven't put together a diary post because I'm still not recovered from the election, but I will say I had a super great weekend-- besides my zoo time, I hit the Sea World Christmas preview on Friday, and went to the Alpaca Ranch, the Zoo, and Sea World all on Saturday. "Great" isn't the word I'd use for Sunday, but one of my closest high school friends recently died of breast cancer, so while obviously it is horrible, she knew for several years, made an amazing podcast about her fight, and ultimately faced it in a way only she could, so memorializing her and being with old friends was pretty special. And then after all that, I got to see Blind Pilot at the Belly Up, who I realized are in my top 5 all time favorite artists (with Nada Surf, Rocky Votolato, Frightened Rabbit, and The National). I've mostly just been at the zoo this week, but did a beluga interaction at Sea World, too, and now it's Wednesday night and I'm going to see Cyndi Lauper with my mom. Which is another story for another time, but I'm super excited. I hope everyone has a really great week.
Stay safe out there. Go get vaccinated for Flu and COVID while you still can.

CoVID-19: Thanksgiving In The Time Of COVID, Take Two | UCSD Trolley Extension Opens | Water Main Breaks Flood San Diego | Retail Crime Flash Mobs | US Urges Evacuations Of Ethiopia | Psaki Ups Desantis Disses |

Family Time (Taken 11.20.21)

I think I've had about enough of Dr. Walensky. Today she was asked a question about the wedge being driven through families over vaccines and she does this thing where it's almost like she throws all her medical knowledge out the window like a toddler begging their parents not to fight. Be. Real. If people aren't yet vaccinated, it's too late for Thanksgiving. That ship sailed before Halloween. If vaccinated people don't want unvaccinated around, that's their call, and we need to stop giving this obnoxious loud minority so much time and attention. Shots are accessible, free, and safe. Who wants to share a table with an ignoramus who puts everyone else at risk? Because if they won't get vaccines, you know they're also not following any of the other non-pharmaceutical interventions, like masking, and are more likely to partake in high-risk activities. It's not worth it. Yes, get vaccinated. And if you're 6 months past your mRNA series or more than 2 months after J&J, you should get boosted as soon as possible. But for the holdouts? Most of us stopped giving a shit about them months ago anyway.

This goes to something else that irritated me this weekend. The new blue line extension of the San Diego Trolley to UCSD opened over the weekend. In a news interview, a spokesman was asked about COVID safety mitigations, and they said that besides masks being required, the cars are sanitized nightly. It would seem to me that SDMTS-- especially since it is now going to UCSD, arguably one of the premiere medical and science schools in the country-- could've advised that they should be talking about ventilation and air exchange on public transit, not on sanitization, which should just be standard always, even pre-pandemic. So as long as we keep asking the wrong questions, centering on the wrong issues, we're going to keep seeing shit like this:

U.S. COVID update: Daily cases rise for 16 days in a row:
        New cases: 157,959
        Average: 94,428 (+1,584)
        In hospital: 49,531 (+303)
        In ICU: 12,435 (+209)
        New deaths: 1,405
        Average: 1,140 (+10)
            more data from NewsNodes.com

Fortunately, I'm happy to report my family is all vaccinated, my niece still needs her 2nd shot, but everyone else is fully vaxxed and those of us who can be boosted are. On Saturday morning, Darren took Nova and her aunt to the airport to go to St. Louis. We lazed around the house and watched too much Netflix. My cousin came down from LA so we all met for dinner at Filippis IB where we sat on the patio and had a nice dinner then hung out at my mom's for a couple hours. We talked about Thanksgiving plans and found out my god-sister's boyfriend is Snoop Dogg's nephew so they're going to the Doggpound for Thanksgiving. WHAT?!!? Obviously that was a fun conversation. After getting home, Darren and I enjoyed a few too many cocktails, which left for a very, very lazy Sunday. You've gotta do it once when the kid goes away but can't make it a habit, you know?

I hope everyone gets to enjoy the holiday week amongst loved ones and friends and gets a chance to catch up on sleep. I think we all really need it.

Stay safe out there.

Happy Valentine's Day! | COVID-19 Data Improving Locally, Statewide, and Beyond |

Me and My Valentine, Darren (Taken 2.11.2021)

I'm gonna follow the lead of everyone else and take the day (mostly) off. I've included data where it was provided but I guess this big weekend with Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, and President's Day all in the course of four days has everyone taking time off. I will say that while the holiday may be having an effect, our numbers are looking promising with the lowest new cases we've had in ages and hospitalizations and ICU hospitalizations are looking promising, too, and indications are that ICU won't go down much more because hospitals are finally scheduling other types of surgeries.

Around here we had a low key day. Darren and Nova built a succulent wall garden planter out of a pallet they found on a bike ride with a 'free' sign on it, I attempted to organize my dresser drawers, and then I joined them hanging in the yard for a couple hours. I finished the crab we ordered and now my Facebook feed is full of ads for seafood boxes and I want to order them all. Tonight we're just hanging around the house with Darren making pizzas with the dough Nova made yesterday and I'm trying not to get sucked into the internet while I'm finishing this post, so I'm gonna call it quits and hope you all stay safe out there.

New Video: MC Flow- "Pot In The Latkes"

I'm not sure if you were listening to the Local 94/9 last night, but it was quite a party to celebrate the one year anniversary of TJ as the host. There was amazing food from Big Front Door (with Pork Loin and Smoked Salmon that must have crack in it because I couldn't stop shoveling it into my mouf), lots of friends in the room, and I even got to pick three songs to close out the show. I knew that MC Flow was dropping a new song today and reached out in an attempt to make it one of my picks last night, but she was in NY and didn't get my message until a few hours later, so I just decided to wait until it released today, and the song is so good, it warrants its own post.

So here you go, a little holiday message from your old friend, MC Flow.

Things To Do In San Diego: December 5-7, 2014

I am really looking forward to the weekend. After laying low for the better part of a week with a stupid cough and cold, I'm ready to get out after dark. I can't complain about the week, however, because of course it rained, and as an occasional River Rescuer, it was awesome to see water flowing through Mission Trails during a misty day hike and then again as we may or may have not trespassed to Adobe Falls. If we had, it was probably a muddy hike but probably the coolest thing ever with so much water flowing through the San Diego River. We also had some good family time despite the completely disappointing Coronado Holiday b.s. (TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS PER PERSON TO SKATE AND ADULT IS REQUIRED WITH CHILDREN UNDER 12!!!), and got to see my sister dance at her high school which was super impressive. Still, I'm looking forward to some good music and perhaps some adult beverages while we spend the weekend organizing, shopping, working, and choosing and decorating our tree. Let me know if anyone has any crashable corporate Christmas parties. Those are my favorite. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Holiday Things To Do In San Diego

Speaker of the Assembly, Toni Atkins, has a very thorough newsletter. Some staffer or intern put a lot of time into collecting these events, and in no way am I trying to claim that this is my work, but they did a really good job and one would hope that the point of including these in the newsletter is to get the word out about free family events throughout the 78th District and County. I'll sprinkle in more as I find them. [I've already updated this 3 times today, so I decided to make a separate page tab for these listings. If you're on mobile, this is accessible with the pull down menu by the word blog. Still, full post after the photo.

Celebrate the holidays in San Diego – and do it for free!

Holidays Rule

I hate to disappoint my readers who think I'm always scouring the internet for new music and am on top of everything that comes out. The truth is that when I'm working at home, I'm generally tuned into one of the government access channels on TV (C-Span, California Channel, Local Government Channel), KPBS through MusicChoice, or the Adult Alternative station, also on MusicChoice. I feel it's getting my value out of the nearly $200 I pay for my Cox bundle. To be honest, I only like about 65% of the music on the latter, but it's unimposing and helps me get my work done. Tonight I heard a track, however, that made me pay attention because I recognized the voice as Andrew Bird and love holiday music, in this case, the song was "Auld Lang Syne". Apparently the record is called Holidays Rule and features several artists with their own take on the holidays. It also appears that it was released by Starbucks, so maybe when you're ordering your triple skinny egg nog latte, you can pick it up. Or, you can just stream it on Spotify. This oughta get me in the mood for Jungle Bells at the zoo, which kicked off on Saturday, and means lots of lights and longer hours at the zoo, which will be open until 8pm nightly through January 6, with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Almost Christmas Music From Foxtail Brigade

Perhaps you remember my good friend Anton Patzner from Judgement Day? Well, he sent me some new tunes from his latest project with Laura Weinbach. They have a few different records up on BandCamp, but this will help you through your bah humbug moments.

Embracing the Holidays with Colin Clyne, Josh Damigo, and Saba

I've been alluding to a December event, and I'm sure you noticed the flyer on my site this week, but I want to officially announce the next sd:dialed in event. It will be on Friday, December 2, 2011, featuring Colin Clyne, Josh Damigo, and Saba. It's been in the works for a while now but I wanted to get through the anniversary show before I really pushed it too hard. What is really exciting about it is that we're using a BRAND SPANKIN' NEW venue and breaking it in with this show. It's called The Irenic and is located at 3090 Polk in North Park.
The Irenic is housed in an historic North Park church, which was built & established in 1945. The space was completely renovated in 2011 for San Diego's thriving music & entertainment scene.
The space has incredible lighting, a killer soundboard and soundsystem, and flexible seating that will make the space feel warm and inviting for music lovers of all ages. I decided to call the event Embracing The Holidays because I know how December gets all crazy and chaotic and people let parties and events that are supposed to be enjoyable feel like obligations. I think it's an opportunity to ease into the holidays with a family-friendly event with San Diego's best singer-songwriters. See all the details below, save the date, and get your tickets now.

Christmas Music: Sixpence None The Richer "Silent Night"

OK, is it obvious enough that I'm in the holiday spirit? Pretty funny for someone who has no religion. Maybe I'm optimistic about 2009 (specifically January 20th), perhaps it's because my nephew is due to be born on Christmas Day. Regardless, here's another holiday song from Sixpence None The Richer, this time "Silent Night" featuring Dan Haseltine from Jars Of Clay. It's available with other holiday songs on iTunes.

Some of my other favorite Holiday music:

Greg Laswell's Little Drummer Boy

Sufjan Stevens "Songs For Christmas" 5 CD Box Set (On Sale for $15.99 at Insound)

And from one of my favorite holiday movies, The Love Actually soundtrack.

Oh, and I just got this one emailed to me:

Army Navy feat. Charlotte Froom (The Like) - "Stay In" (A Holiday Song)

More Holiday/Shopping Events

I keep coming across more and more holiday events and reposting all of them here would be quite lengthy, so instead, here are some quick links to spread the holiday cheer.

Partying with a Purpose has several toy drives and events that reward your donations of toys or gift cards with great events, some with hosted drinks and food, and an opportunity to celebrate the season. They literally have an event every day this week, so check here to see if something piques your interest.

As I previously mentioned, this Saturday is the annual Kensington Tree lighting in front of Kensington Vine on Adams & Edgeware with the best Santa around. Info here.

Sunday, Thread is back at the Sheraton Harbor Island. With discounted designer duds, fashion, and adult beverages, you can actually enjoy yourself while avoiding congested malls.

For animal lovers and also on Sunday, join the pet parade in the Gaslamp followed by a Pet Expo. Registration is only $10. Info here.

Again, Sign On San Diego has a pretty exhaustive list of plenty of holiday activities here.

Oh, and one more nugget. If you're like me and want a Christmas tree but have cut back on spending, you can pick up a FREE tree this weekend at the Giant Used Car Sale at Qualcomm Stadium. I went last year and besides wandering through a car lot and meeting a couple pushy salesman who wanted me to trade my car in on the spot, it was a pretty simple process. Hopefully it rains this weekend like it did last year so you can use that as an excuse to pop in and out.

Happy Thanksgiving! How 'bout some free music?

Today I will be without internet for most of the day. One day I will convince my parents to get wi-fi. Either way, I've got two good nuggets for you to make it through your day, namely TWO free album downloads.

The first, from Matt Pond PA, is a free EP available for download from the official site here.

From the press release:

Mister P. and his party have taken themselves captive to become the their own producers, manufacturers, and distributors. It was a deferential revolt against inertia, a clearing of the throat to answer the quiet. Or maybe it was an inevitable reaction to seeing Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

In adherence to their demands, these songs were recorded in a cabin in Bearsville, NY, as a simple sonic manifestation of their opinions concerning the arguable value of a waterlogged paperback.

A Free EP prospectively titled: The Dawn before the Dark Leaves or Water off a Black Dog's Back or Amazing Life or Butterfly Mornings and Wildflower Afternoons or May we never go go mental, may we always stay stay gentle or The Fear of not Being Afraid or The Warmth Within the Warren or Dreaming of Sleeping or Saying It to Keep It From Happening or This is not the Dark Leaves or Living for Liv Ullman or The Odds of a Sunrise or Whispering Pines or You'll be the Rhythm and I'll be the Beat and I'll be the Rhythm and You'll be the Beat or The Grass Harp or Goodbye Barcelona or Why is my copy of the Moviegoer Floating in a Puddle Beside the Car.

Or simply, The Freeep.

The second comes from The Vacation.

After being dropped from American Recordings after successfully releasing their first album and touring with the likes of Alice Cooper, Living Things and more, The Vacation didn't lose any steam and released their sophomore record themselves.

Get Used is now available thanks to Playboy Magazine and trueAnthem.com for FREE to all. In fact, the album is downloadable from a widget that can be posted on any website, blog, social networking profile, etc. Sharing is caring.

Check it out here.

I hope to see lots of people out tonight after you've had your fill of turkey, tofurkey, pot roast, ham, turducken, or whatever it might be that fills your belly on this day of thanks.

xo,
rosey

Holiday Fun: Things To Do In San Diego For the Holidays

I'm listening to the rain falling outside my window and I'm snuggled up in bed with my dog at my feet in my favorite pajamas and I couldn't help but get excited for the holidays. Despite losing my job, I have a lot to be thankful for this year, specifically the health of my friends and family, the joy my niece brings, the excitement of the birth of my nephew (due on Christmas Day!) and the safe deployment and recent return of my brother from Iraq. Not to mention the elation I feel with the presidential election.
Photobucket Photobucket

As always, there are lots of fun activities this holiday season. Click 'keep on reading' to read all about some of them.
  1. December Nights (Formerly Christmas On The Prado)- This family friendly annual event takes place this year on Friday, December 5 from 5-10p and Saturday December 6 from noon-10pm. There are children's activities, singers, dancers, choirs, pictures with Santa, food tastings and more. The event is free. Parking is available around the park with shuttles available from City College.
  2. Fantasy on Ice: The outdoor ice rink at Horton Plaza is back. Benefitting the Rady Children's Cancer Care Center, the rink will be open through January 4. Open daily rom 10am-10pm, the cost is $10 for adults, $8 for kids under 10, and $2 for skate rental. I have gone for the past couple years and my recommendation is to take extra socks because they will get soaked, and avoid midday skating, when the ice melts and has a lot of water floating on top. Also, leave your bags and personal items at home or locked in your car, because people just shove personal belongings under benches. Note: The Hotel Del also has an outdoor skating rink through January 3, for $10-$20 depending on the session and $5 skate rental.
  3. NBC Tree Lighting- in conjunction with the Fantasy on Ice, we get our own "Rockefeller Square" type tree lighting. This year, the event takes place on Wednesday, December 3.
  4. Kensington Tree Lighting, Dec. 13, 2008, Santa pics 3:30-7:30, tree lighting 8-9pm - I know there are lightings all over San Diego, but this one happens to be across the street from my house, and features tree lighting by Mayor Jerry Sanders, who is a resident of Kensington. Assuming it will be similar to the past couple years, there will be food from local restaurants to sample for just a couple dollars (Last year there was mac n cheese from Ken Grill and Onion rings from Burger Lounge, among other tasty treats). But the best part about this tree lighting is that Santa is the most perfect Santa anywhere. In the past you could pay for professional photos, or donate a couple bucks and use your own camera to take a photo session. I'm hoping that hasn't changed. Those pics at the top of this post are of my niece, Johanna, from 2007.

CONCERTS: Most radio stations in town will be hosting some sort of Christmas Show. Though FM 94/9 will not be hosting a Holiday Hootenanny this year, other stations are having smaller events. Here are a few:

  1. KPRI 102.1- December 11, KPRI hosts Ingrid Michaelson, Tristan Prettyman, and Matt Nathanson in The Abbey in Hillcrest. This show is sold out, however
  2. Radio Sophie 103.7 - December 13, Sophie presents "A Green Christmas" at Anthology featuring Alanis Morrisette, O.A.R., Justin Nozuka, Buckcherry, and Safety Suit. General Admission tickets are $40 and can be purchased here.
  3. 91X Wrex The Halls, Friday, December 12th at 4th & B featuring Slightly Stoopid, Cake, Alkaline Trio, Gaslight Anthem, and Coldwar Kids. Tickets are $32.50 GA or $42.50 for the seated box area (plus service charges), and are available at Ticketmaster.com.
  4. The Vandals Winter Formal is back this year with The Phenomenauts at the House of Blues on December 12.
  5. Star 94.1 Acoustic Jingle Ball, December 14 & 15 at Anthology. GA tickets are $30. December 14 features John McLaughlin & Matt Nathanson. December 15 features Sara Bareilles & Plain White T's. (This night is sold out). Tickets for the 14th can be purchased here.

There are some great online resources of holiday events. Jack FM has a very comprehensive list here and SignOnSanDiego has a great list here.
