Friday, November 1: Free Bike Lights at San Diego Central Library

*Light Me Up Safety Lights in photo do not represent what will be provided at this event

November 1: San Diego Cyclists Get Road-Ready with Free Bike Lights at Central Library

Bike light installation prepares bike riders for the end of Daylight Saving Time
Bike Coalition to make night time riding safer for commuters

WHAT:
As the majority of the country transitions from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time, the San Diego County Bike Coalition and the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) are partnering to invite all bike commuters to receive free front bike lights. All riders on bikes can head to the San Diego Central Library where Bike Coalition staff and police officers will encourage safe, nighttime commuting with free bike light installation, helpful tips and important safety information about riding in the dark.

WHY:
With nightfall arriving almost 60 minutes earlier after Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 3, the Bike Coalition wants to ensure all people in San Diego have access to what they need to be visible on busy streets and get home safely. People who commute on bikes and pedal home in the dark during the Standard Time months will be safer on our shared roads. California state law requires cyclists to use front and rear lights when commuting at night.

WHO:
San Diego Bike Coalition
San Diego Police Department
San Diego Central Library

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Location: San Diego Central Library (330 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101)
Date and Time: Friday, November 1 from 5 to 6 p.m.

Photos: #PeakBloom at Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden at Balboa Park

I'm having a perfect lazy Sunday. I finished reading Life Will Be the Death of Me: . . . and You Too!, the latest book by Chelsea Handler, Darren is off working, Nova is hanging out with a soccer buddy, and I'm at home trying to stay off social media because I don't want any GoT spoilers or commentary until after we watch it tonight. I've got a ton of photos to post, some LA Daily episodes to catch up on, some posts have had on my brain for a minute, and I want to get a jump on listings because I'll be shooting Johnny Marr on Monday and I don't wanna be under pressure to get them done. So I guess I just filled up my day with a whole lot of time on my laptop, though I might also try to sneak off to the Zoo or something today, too. First, a million pictures of the #PeakBloom at the Inez Grant Memorial Rose Garden at Balboa Park that I shot on Friday.

Summer Concerts In The Parks Line-Ups Roll Out For 2017

We pay a hefty sunshine tax in our rents, sales taxes, and general cost of living here in San Diego, but that's all the more reason to love the free events offered every summer. Besides amazing street fairs like Adams Avenue Street Fair, Festival of Arts in North ParkFiesta del Sol, (to name just a few), we also get a ton of "Concerts In The Park".  Many of San Diego's parks have already rolled out their summer series, and I'll do my best to update the one who haven't when they finally get around to it. Every year I fail to include these in my listings because they're a total pain in the ass to hunt down, but I'm an insomniac, so this year I've at least put this together. Note: Street Fairs and other annual events can be found here. Let me know if I missed anything!! (Find them all after the jump. Click the park links for parking, park rules, and any other special event info.)

Holiday Things To Do In San Diego

Speaker of the Assembly, Toni Atkins, has a very thorough newsletter. Some staffer or intern put a lot of time into collecting these events, and in no way am I trying to claim that this is my work, but they did a really good job and one would hope that the point of including these in the newsletter is to get the word out about free family events throughout the 78th District and County. I'll sprinkle in more as I find them. [I've already updated this 3 times today, so I decided to make a separate page tab for these listings. If you're on mobile, this is accessible with the pull down menu by the word blog. Still, full post after the photo.

America's Cup Village Is Coming...and Bringing FREE Concerts!!!

The America's Cup doesn't take place until 2013, but for many years it was an institution here in San Diego, so it is fitting that the first America's Cup World Series event is taking place right here in our own backyard (if you consider the Big Bay your backyard). Even if you know nothing about the regatta, the great thing for you is that the organizers are making a big party out of it. So even if that means they're trying to attract a younger demographic to care about the sport and earn eyeballs for advertisers by bribing you, I'd say that if someone wants to throw a free multi-day event and book awesome FREE CONCERTS, I'm all for it. (There is a suggested donation of $10 for Ocean Conservation Projects)

The concerts will take place at the America's Cup Village (Broadway & Navy Pier on Harbor Drive) each day immediately after racing ends so set times are approximate. There is also a Battle of the Bands taking place, so if you think your band has the chops to play, I highly suggest entering (click the battle of the bands flyer below or the banner at the top of my site). A little bird may have told me that there has only been ONE ENTRY so far, and though they reserve the right to not book anyone, it's a great opportunity to get in front of a lot of eyeballs and the contest closes on Sunday. Halloran will be hosting each night's events.

Wednesday, November 16 - Agua Dulce (4:15)
Thursday, November 17 - The Silent Comedy (8:15) , Little Hurricane (7pm), The Donkeys (5:15)
Friday, November 18 - Chromeo DJ Set (8:30), K.Flay (7:45), The Soft Pack (6:30), Earth Amplified (4:15)
Saturday, November 19 - Diplo (8:15), Hyena (7pm), The Chain Gang of 1974 (5:45)
Sunday, November 20- The Cataracts (5pm)

Thread Show! Details & Ticket Giveaway

It's probably pretty obvious that I'm not much of a shopper. My wardrobe consists mostly of band t-shirts, jeans, and hoodies, and I haven't been shopping in a mall in San Diego in probably five years, but for the fashionistas out there who pay a bit more attention to their appearance, Thread Shows are a great place to find unique apparel and goods. And for those not so interested in shopping, they've added NOSH to their show, which will offer small plate offerings from local eateries for $1-$3.

The Thread Show takes place on Sunday, September 26 at the Horton Plaza event space at 4th & Broadway from 11am-6pm. The cost is $10, or $5 if you RSVP, but I've got THREE pairs of tickets to giveaway. Just send me a tweet "@SDdialedin I wanna go to @ThreadShows on Sunday!" and I'll pick three winners before Friday. Click the flyer for more info, or click 'keep on reading' at the bottom of the post for the full press release.

THREAD Show Brings Indie Fashion, Art, Music and Food to San Diego this Fall
THREAD Show presents NOSH at THREAD Show, a new concept incorporating food tastings from San Diego restaurants, in its September 2010 show

San Diego, THREAD Show is proud to introduce NOSH to the September 2010 show. NOSH is an event concept featuring local restaurants selling sample-sized portions for $1 - $3, as well as small plates. THREAD will still feature the independent designers, shopping, art, house wares, fashion shows, live DJs and all-day giveaways the show is known for but NOSH will feature an additional 15,000 square feet of great food, all-day DJ entertainment and free restaurant giveaways, all included in the entrance fee to THREAD Show.

“San Diego is one of our most popular markets for THREAD Show and the perfect place to introduce this new concept,” said THREAD Show spokesperson, Danielle Gano. “Sustainable fashion and the slow, local food movement go hand-in-hand and we’re excited to bring San Diego its first pop-up local shopping mall, complete with a food court!”

Although NOSH is a new concept for THREAD, supporting local business is not. Every THREAD Show hosts independent designers, artists, musicians and now restaurants to display and sell their wares to attendees. This event allows people to shop and purchase clothes, art, house wares, and eco-friendly designs, listen to live bands and DJs, watch fashion shows, receive complimentary styling in the THREAD Style Lounge, recycle their old clothes and sip, eat and mingle to their heart’s content. Attendees can expect high-quality and high-creativity designs in a more comfortable, energized and interactive shopping environment than conventional retail spaces offer. What truly differentiates THREAD designers from their mass-produced competitors is their commitment to the traditional beauty and art of design, with passion and quality that is second to none.

By allowing shoppers to skip the third-party retailer, THREAD gives trend-setters an opportunity to meet the designers face-to-face, feed the local economy, be kind to the environment and ensure products are locally-made and ethically produced. This one-on-one connection also allows designers to get direct feedback from their consumers.

THREAD Show has also introduced a new, lower ticket price this year. Admission is $10 in all cities – or $5 if you RSVP on the THREAD website. The September 26 event will be held at the Horton Plaza Event Space from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For regular updates, to visit the THREAD blog, RSVP to a show or subscribe to the email newsletter, please visit www.threadshow.com.

About THREAD Show // Good Style. Good Value. Good Karma.
THREAD Show is a travelling juried showcase of the best independent fashion and home designers on the West Coast, and the music and art that rock their world. This dynamic one-day retail environment has showcased more than 7,000 emerging designers since its inception in 2003. THREAD allows consumers a unique opportunity to support their local economy, reduce their carbon footprint and discover emerging designers while scoring deals and purchasing one-of-a-kind wares in a fun and unique setting. KPRI & Hornblower present Dawes

On Sunday morning I was scooped up and headed down to the cruise terminal to catch another KPRI Hornblower cruise, this time with the band Dawes out of Los Angeles. Most of the cruises happen at sunset, so I knew that a free Sunday cruise (while the local Chargers game was blacked out) would be crowded. Fortunately photographer Steve saved me a seat so that I could shoot the show. Wylie, the bassist was unable to attend because he had to fly to New York for his grandfather's funeral, so Taylor played guitar with the rest of the band (brother Griffin and bandmate Alex) helping out with harmonies. It was an amazing set (despite my sunburnt face) and though it was unfortunate that Wylie couldn't be there, we got an incredible performance. Taylor's guitar wasn't even plugged into an amp, just had a single mic on it. He tried out a couple new songs on the crowd, too. The band will be ending their full fall tour at the Casbah on November 27 and I highly recommend getting your tickets for the show. Be sure to check out their site for lots of great videos, an awesome performance on Yours Truly, as well as their most recent Daytrotter session.
These were a few of my favorites of the day:

Free Music Roundup: July 20-26, 2010

Let me catch you up with my life for a second. After doing Comic-con all week (and at least one party or show every night), I was absolutely wrecked. Every muscle and bone in my body ached. I came home on Sunday night after 10:30 and my neighbors were having a party (that had started at 3 pm, by the way. And one that they promised "wouldn't be noisy".) I've created my share of noise over the years, so I tolerated the party for a while. Then it got later. I sent a text message. No reply. I called. No Reply. Then they really blew it by chanting/cheering during the True Blood repeat, which I was seeing for the first time. I actually went out of my apartment midshow and yelled to them so as not to miss my show. I believe it was something like, "[neighbor's name], It's 12:30! On a Sunday! Time to call it a night!" And then I slammed my screen door on my foot. FML.

I am officially that person. Their friends gathered their bibles and left and I was content because I was finally going to get sleep. And man, did I sleep. Well, until the big mouth salon chick opened up shop at 7 a.m. to catch her clients up on her slutty weekend rendezvous. The same time she starts, so does the construction that has that awful beeping that Caterpillers make when they're in reverse. All. Day. Long. *sigh* I remember when Kensington was quiet and I was the loudest one in the hood.

I attempted jumping right into catching up with updating the Casbah calendar and email and posts and job hunting and other "work" come Monday, but my apartment was frightening. So I cleaned. Three loads of laundry. Find places for all the Comic-con crapola. Go through mail. Put all CDs and press kits in one place. Clean the fridge. Clean the litter box. Do the dishes. Dust. More dishes. Vacuum. Make dinner. Do dishes from dinner. Recycle junkmail and magazines from 2009. Fold laundry. Put freshly laundered sheets on the bed. Play with cat while attempting to make bed. Bleed on freshly washed white sheets due to gushing cut from playful but overzealous cat.

It was well into nighttime before I felt like everything was in it's right place and I could finally get to business. I finally started to read the last few days worth of email, one by one. All 323 of them. Naturally, in all of that there was a lot of bullshit, but there were also a lot of free downloads to offer. I haven't listened to all of these though I did sample and they cover a spectrum of genres, so you're just going to have to listen on your own and see if you think they're worth downloading. Unlike last week, most of these bands are not touring through San Diego. I'm putting the locals and the touring bands at the top, but there will be a lot more if you click on 'keep on reading'.

For all downloads (except Fever Sleeves which is at Mediafire), right click and 'save as' or 'save link as' to download depending on your browser. These are all externally hosted by various official sites which have cleared for posting but reserve the right to remove the links at any time, so download them while ya can. This by no means covers all new music, this is just the music that was sent to me over the past seven days to share with my readers.

Happy Thanksgiving! How 'bout some free music?

Today I will be without internet for most of the day. One day I will convince my parents to get wi-fi. Either way, I've got two good nuggets for you to make it through your day, namely TWO free album downloads.

The first, from Matt Pond PA, is a free EP available for download from the official site here.

From the press release:

Mister P. and his party have taken themselves captive to become the their own producers, manufacturers, and distributors. It was a deferential revolt against inertia, a clearing of the throat to answer the quiet. Or maybe it was an inevitable reaction to seeing Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

In adherence to their demands, these songs were recorded in a cabin in Bearsville, NY, as a simple sonic manifestation of their opinions concerning the arguable value of a waterlogged paperback.

A Free EP prospectively titled: The Dawn before the Dark Leaves or Water off a Black Dog's Back or Amazing Life or Butterfly Mornings and Wildflower Afternoons or May we never go go mental, may we always stay stay gentle or The Fear of not Being Afraid or The Warmth Within the Warren or Dreaming of Sleeping or Saying It to Keep It From Happening or This is not the Dark Leaves or Living for Liv Ullman or The Odds of a Sunrise or Whispering Pines or You'll be the Rhythm and I'll be the Beat and I'll be the Rhythm and You'll be the Beat or The Grass Harp or Goodbye Barcelona or Why is my copy of the Moviegoer Floating in a Puddle Beside the Car.

Or simply, The Freeep.

The second comes from The Vacation.

After being dropped from American Recordings after successfully releasing their first album and touring with the likes of Alice Cooper, Living Things and more, The Vacation didn't lose any steam and released their sophomore record themselves.

Get Used is now available thanks to Playboy Magazine and trueAnthem.com for FREE to all. In fact, the album is downloadable from a widget that can be posted on any website, blog, social networking profile, etc. Sharing is caring.

Check it out here.

I hope to see lots of people out tonight after you've had your fill of turkey, tofurkey, pot roast, ham, turducken, or whatever it might be that fills your belly on this day of thanks.

xo,
rosey

7-11 Free Slurpee Day!

Yes, it's true. Today is free Slurpee day. (Being that the date is 7/11 and all...) Don't get all crazy about it, though. It's a 7.11 oz Slurpee. Is it worth going out of your way for? Probably not. But if you happen to work in a building with a 7-11 in the lobby (as I do), it's a lovely afternoon treat.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I went for the new "Full Throttle" flavor. A guy was feeling me when I blurted out "this would taste really good with vodka."
