Poliça w/ Night Moves @ Casbah- 04.18.13

Poliça

'Holy shit that sounds good!'

After ten+ years in SD and countless shows at the Casbah, I can honestly say I've never heard those words uttered by someone on stage.  Partway through an absolutely searing set from Minneapolis-based four piece Poliça, lead singer Channy Leaneagh said what was on everyone's mind as the packed house rocked out to the indie-electro rock stylings of yet another band making their way through town between consecutive weekend appearances at Coachella.  More words and photos after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 28-30, 2013

I know it's the middle of the day, so you're probably all out and about, but I wanted to update the listings because there's been a lineup change at the Casbah tonight. White Lung had to cancel due to a family emergency, so the new lineup(and better one if you ask me) is Metz, Mrs. Magician, Marsupials. Happy Sunday! Sunday through Tuesday archives are after the jump.

Recommended Shows in San Diego April 29-May 5, 2013

As the month of April comes to a close, there is much to look forward to as live music continues to blend with the abundant San Diego sunshine. Some of the upcoming week's shows worth attending are:

Monday Marnie Stern plays her signature brand of guitar rock at Soda Bar with LA band SISU and locals Bulletins lending support...

Alt-country singer Caitlin Rose headlines the Casbah on Tuesday with her excellent new album, The Stand-In...

Wednesday Hugo Manuel, aka Chad Valley (Jonquil), brings his synth based sound to the Casbah...

LA folkies Yellow Red Sparks play The Griffin on Thursday, having recently released their eponymous debut album...

The weekend brings many choices for great live shows...Friday kicks off with Maps and Atlases playing Soda Bar with Young Man opening...or you can check out Vancouver psych rockers Black Mountain at the Casbah...

The Casbah is the place to be on Saturday with Born Ruffians headlining a sure to sell out show...these Canadians just released their third full length Birthmarks...

On Sunday Built to Spill begin their sold out two night run at the Casbah for those fortunate enough to hold a ticket...

All in all, a great week of live music awaits...consult the listings for a complete rundown of all the shows...most importantly, treat yourself to quality live music here in San Diego...

Local Show Preview: Bulletins @ Soda Bar Monday April 29, 2013

Bassist/vocalist Lorelei Plotczyk (Film School) fronts newly formed San Diego based band Bulletins. Keyboardist/vocalist Susie Ghahremani, guitarist/vocalist Itai Faierman (The Mashtis) and drummer Luis Galvan are the other members of the group. Referencing many bands as being influential in their sound, the music is mainly of the dream pop genre. The band is playing their first San Diego show as openers for Marnie Stern at Soda Bar on Monday April 29. After listening to the songs posted below (courtesy SoundCloud), I think you will be motivated to head out for a night of great music.

The opportunity to see Bulletins perform on a much bigger stage comes on May 18 when the band plays the North Park Festival of Arts. (http://northparkfestivalofarts.com/)

San Diego Newsy Bits Roundup: FM 94/9 SPF 2013, Restaurant News, X-Fest Switcheroo

It has been a while since I've done a newsy bits roundup, but exploring the city on my bike helps me notice things a little bit better. Fortunately, we all have Facebook, so you're probably up to date on a lot of stuff, so I'm just going to post some stuff I've noticed. Lots of things happening around the city.

FM 94/9 Announced their SPF 2013 lineup. The Sandy Parts Festival (SPF) 94/9 - Presented by BUD LIGHT is back at the Oceanside Pier and features Matt & Kim, Youngblood Hawke, Capital Cities, Family of the Year, The Mowgli's, The Palace Ballroom and UCSD Battle of the Bands winner Soda Pants. Tickets are only $15 and can be upgraded to VIP for another $10. The show is Saturday, June 8 at the Junior Seau Amphitheatre at 3pm. Tickets are on sale now.

Back in March, 91X announced their X-Fest lineup. Since then, the lineup has changed slightly and more importantly, they've changed the date of the show. The new lineup has Blink 182, Thirty Seconds To Mars, The Offspring, Jimmy Eat World, Silversun Pickups, The Dirty Heads, Fitz & The Tantrums, Wavves, Atlas Genius, Iamdynamite, and New Politics. Absent from the new lineup were previously announced artists The Offspring, Jimmy Eat World and Capital Cities. The original show was scheduled for May 17th. The new date is Friday, September 20th. Tickets are on sale and previously purchased tickets will be honored. [Update: According to Robin Roth, Capital Cities is the only band on the original lineup who will be absent from the new date.]

Summer concerts are slowly being announced, including the full lineup for Humphrey's 2013 season and the San Diego County Fair Toyota Concert Series Grandstand lineup.

As CityBeat has reported, Kava Lounge has been sold. From what I hear, the new owners are gonna pretty much keep it the same.::

After losing a contentious battle with their landlord, Croce's downtown will be closing at the end of 2013. Here's a farewell message from Ingrid Croce on the Croce's site. ::

30th Street and North Park have added several new beer spots in 2013, including Belching Beaver at 4223 30th Street. It's in the old scooter shop just south of El Cajon Boulevard. The 30th Street Corridor just keeps expanding. Polite Provisions and Soda & Swine have been open for a while now and I finally checked out the former. Not my scene, but I can see why these places are successful. It would be nice if they ponied up for a new bus shelter that would fit their design rather than getting the former one taken down. Pretty lame if you've ever tried to transfer from the 11 to the 2, let alone if you're elderly or a person with a disability.  Just down the street (4494 30th Street) is Poor House Brewing Company which I still have yet to try. Over in Normal Heights, The Heights Tavern opened (with no connection to West Coast Tavern & Uptown Tavern) and this week the Sycamore Den will be opening. Lauren, owner of Kensington Cafe, recently opened The Haven Pizzeria in Kensington, and last summer Village Vino opened on the same block. North Park has a bunch of other additions, including Thorn Street Brewery at 3176 Thorn and the Foundry shuttering and making way for a bar whose name escapes me because the font of their sign is so.bad. El Take It Easy is gone and has been replaced by Hubcap and it looked like a solid menu with tasty craft beers available by the pitcher. Of course, Bottlecraft moved into the hood, too. My friends Kristian and Pat over at MySMN developed a site to keep up with North Park happenings called Living North Park which complements another site, North Park Scene, that has been around awhile. And to round out restaurant news, I hear that the new Stone Brewery restaurant in Liberty Station is opening VERY SOON (though I was asked not to give a specific date) and is going to be the biggest restaurant in San Diego.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 25-27, 2013

It's Thursday afternoon and I'm trying to motivate. Nova is watching Scooby Doo and Darren is making dinner and I'm supposed to be getting ready for SoundDiego Live but after CHAPPO last night, I'm feeling pretty lazy and content to cozy up in front of the TV. This weekend looks like it's going to be pretty awesome, too, with ArtWalk and Adams Avenue Unplugged and Encinitas Street Fair and an excellent weather forecast. I'll motivate soon because I know SoundDiego will be a blast at Bar Pink, but I'm warning you now, I'm probably going to be a little late. Thursday through Saturday archives are after the jump.

TRANSFER: BACK HOME FOR THE BELLY UP

Finally back to earth after a whirlwind ride across Europe.  I guess we left off about a third of the way through the trip since our last update, and it's a little hard to summarize the rest of the shows/experiences but if I had to in a single word, it would have to be…
'Scrumtrilescent'   - Will Farrell (as James Lipton)
We are also pleased to say that we were able to spread our new songs across the land by selling every single copy of our new tour exclusive  'Morning EP'.  Thanks to all who made the trip to see us in all the different countries and thanks to those who had never heard of us, but showed up early and rocked out.  We met so many new friends and are grateful for all the support we received out on the trail and beyond.  We compiled a ton footage from our trip and will be cutting up some video for you soon.
Here are a few little snippets of photography and some fan videos from moments in the tour.

If you haven't had the chance to see it yet, we made a lyric video for our new tune 'Still Bad Blood'.  You can also download it for FREE on our WEBSITE

I realized I hadn't updated listings since the weekend, so even though I'll hopefully be tagging on the next week of listings within a day or so, I wanted to at least get these to the top of the page. I'm super excited that my friends CHAPPO will be in town on Wednesday night and Darren and I are taking a bonus #datenight so that should be pretty awesome. He was teasing me about not posting much lately, but I figure I have a long, boring diary post in me somewhere but I jacked my neck and so working on a laptop is the last thing I want to be doing until the pain dissipates. Alt-J w/ Hundred Waters @ Belly Up- 04.16.13

Alt-J

Greater San Diego was treated to a streak of exceptional shows last week as some of the best bands out there found themselves looking to fill their time with a few shows between consecutive weekends at Coachella.  Tuesday was no exception as recent Mercury Prize winners Alt-J made their way from the desert to Solana Beach for their second SD show in four months. Gainesville, FL five piece Hundred Waters started the night for a sold out crowd at the Belly Up.  More words and photos after the jump.

The Postal Service adds West Coast dates in July

The reunited duo of Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, aka The Postal Service, fresh from playing Coachella, have just announced some new West Coast dates including a stop in San Diego at the Open Air Theatre  on the campus of SDSU on Sunday July 21. Accompanied throughout the tour by Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis, and the opening band will be the recently formed supergroup Divine Fits. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday April 26 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. Presale tickets will be available tomorrow Wednesday April 24 at 10 a.m. via the band's website,

Recommended Shows in San Diego April 22-28, 2013

The end of the second Coachella weekend signifies the return of the normal music scene in San Diego. While the number of quality upcoming shows has diminished, there are still many great offerings to peruse for this week. A closer look reveals some shows worthy of attending.

Austin folk rockers Wheeler Brothers headline Soda Bar on Monday, having just released their sophomore effort Gold Boots Glitter...

Tuesday brings Bay Area rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club to the  House of Blues...

The Cave Singers return to the Casbah this Wednesday with new songs in their arsenal...Bleeding Rainbows open...or catch New York band Chappo with their eclectic music at Soda Bar...

On Thursday husband/wife duo Whitehorse return to Soda Bar...The Lonely Forest and Now, Now play the Loft at UCSD...

The weekend begins on Friday with great local band shows at the Casbah (The Howls, New Mexico) and at the Belly Up (Transfer, Dead Feather Moon)...

Adams Avenue Unplugged  runs Saturday and Sunday...ArtWalk returns to Little Italy over the weekend...at night catch Telekinesis! with Mount Moriah at the Casbah...

Sunday evening offers great shows at the Casbah (Metz) and Soda Bar (Blood Red Shoes)...

A great week of live music lies ahead...be a part of it and attend some shows...

Things To Do In San Diego: April 19-23, 2013

I am beat today...my sleep has sucked a whole bunch this week but it was totally worth it because last night at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown was awesome. We had a great dinner, saw Franz Ferdinand on the outdoor stage, then caught Grizzly Bear on the indoor stage. We got home around 3 but I couldn't fall asleep until around 6, which probably means I'll be up all night again tonight, which maybe isn't a bad thing because I like to be up when Darren gets home from work around 4am. Anyway, this weekend looks to be a great one. I'm going to the new Dizzy's spot for the first time (maybe my first Dizzy's show ever?), then to the Casbah. CityBeat Festival of Beers is tomorrow and EarthFair is on Sunday, so plenty off opportunities to enjoy this summer weather we're getting. It's also Record Store Day tomorrow, so stop by your local shop and pick up something new. I've listed the live music for M-Theory and Lou's, but don't forget other spots like Taang!, Off The Record, Record City, and Groovy Records among others. Friday through Tuesday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 17-18, 2013

This week has been crazy packed with amazing shows that I've felt a little overwhelmed. In fact, though I intended to go out last night, it just never happened save for a little late night bike ride over to Darren's, but tonight we are ready to enjoy the scene. It's #24hourdate night for us so you might see us out at FLUXX and the Casbah, or maybe we'll pop over to Bar Pink or The Void or Soda Bar for good measure. If you wanna go to FLUXX tonight, it's $25 at the door but I think if you hurry, you can still get hard tickets at M-Theory for $15. Not 100% positive on that, but it's worth the try.
Listings through next week are all below, which is good since tomorrow I'll be taking a little road trip with Jeff to catch Franz Ferdinand and Grizzly Bear at Pappy and Harriet's. Wednesday and Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 15-16, 2013

It occurred to me earlier today that I haven't posted a diary in awhile, but maybe that is a good thing because it means my life lately has revolved more around actually doing things instead of writing about things I'm going to do or have been doing. With two days of babysitting, working the door and working merch last week, and then an action packed weekend, I just didn't have much time to catch up with much online. Anyway, Monday and Tuesday archives are after the jump. I'll catch up someday.

Tonight: Wild Nothing, Little Green Cars @ Casbah (4/15/13)

I can think of no better way to wind down from paying taxes than listening to the soothing sounds of Jack Tatum's band Wild Nothing. Playing to thousands of fans in the desert (Coachella) over the weekend will find a stark contrast to headlining the intimate confines of the Casbah. The band released their sophomore album Nocturne last summer. This is music that flows like a meandering stream, capturing the listener for the ride with pleasant songs throughout the album. The live performance duplicates the recordings beautifully, having seen the band in Tuscon last summer. I know this is a band that strives to find the perfect balance between all the components, such as reverb, lyrics, melodies and the rest. This is dream pop of the highest order. Do yourself a favor and head to the Middletown venue tonight, close your eyes for a moment, then open them and realize you are part of Wild Nothing's reality.

Make sure you arrive early for Little Green Cars, from Dublin, making their San Diego debut.

Recommended Shows in San Diego April 15-21, 2013

April 15 is officially Tax Day and unofficially the start of the week in between Coachella weekends...this also means a plethora of quality shows featuring bands playing in a variety of venues here in cooler San Diego...such as:

On Monday Wild Nothing and Little Green Cars (Dublin) hit the Casbah for a can't miss show...Franz Ferdinand and frenetic opening band Palma Violets play this season's inaugural show at Humphrey's...

Tuesday the one and only Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds play the beautiful Balboa Theatre downtown...afterwards catch Brooklyn upstarts DIIV for an intimate show at Soda Bar...

Canadian twin sisters Tegan and Sara will be at Humphrey's on Wednesday playing songs from their new album...fellow Canucks Stars open...Casbah welcomes The Faint to downtown party club Fluxx...

R&B flavored indie rockers Polica (Minneapolis) make their San Diego debut at the Casbah on Thursday joined by Night Moves, also from MN....definitely worth checking out...

Friday brings Cloud Nothings back to SD, this time at the Casbah...their music is both wild (in a good way) and infectious...

Soda Bar has a great show at the all ages venue The Irenic on Saturday with Brooklynites Beach Fossils...Mrs. Magician opens...

Sunday finds Australian rocker Paul Kelly playing the 5th Avenue Stage at the House of Blues...

What  promises to be a memorable week of music awaits live music lovers in America's Finest City...

The Evens @ The Irenic April 10, 2013

I might as well kick off my first post with one of the most influential minds in punk history. The Evens, Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina, took over the stage of The Irenic this past Wednesday night and played a sing-a-long filled set reminiscent of a house show. If you missed it I hope you can make it to one of their L.A area shows next week or at the Coachella weekends. See more photos after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 11-14, 2013

Oh, man. Last night with The Evens at the Irenic was so cool, and some of you even got your tickets taken by my little helper, Nova, who also had a blast at the show. I will update and organize these listings a little better before the weekend, but I wanted to get them posted since I'll be babysitting Zane again today while his awesome mom gets to work on her first national TV spot. So I'll be spending the day chasing an active one-year-old around the house and probably another trip to the Zoo and/or Balboa Park is in order. We're also meeting tonight about the North Park Festival of Arts, which I'm SO HAPPY is finally all booked. Anyway, Thursday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

USS Midway Live at the Landmark Tickets are here!

Yesterday I told you that I would be getting some tickets for the USS Midway Live at the Landmark. The show features Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and is presented by Jack Daniel's. Doors are at 7pm and it is a 21+ event. Today I got an early morning knock on the door from FedEx with 10 pairs of tickets to give away.

I will be all over the place the next few days, so geo-locate me and ask for your FREE tickets. I will use Foursquare to check in, and hashtag #USSMidway and an estimate of how long I will be at each location. For example, right now at 1:13 pm I am at the Casbah and will be here for another 20 minutes. Have fun keeping up with me!!

Win Tickets to Jack Daniel's Live At The Landmark!

Jack Daniel's is already one of my favorite brands for all they do for music...I mean, as the main sponsor of SoundDiego, SoundDiego Live and SoundDiego TV, they kinda keep my freelancing wheels rolling, but aside from that, I like to throw back some Tennessee whiskey every now and again, too. They've initiated a new series called "Live at the Landmark", where they host great bands at American landmarks across the country, including the Playboy Mansion in L.A., St. Louis' Gateway Arch, Grand Central Terminal in NYC, and Pearl Stable in San Antonio, Texas.

Why YOU should care about this is that the series lands here in San Diego aboard the USS Midway this Sunday, April 14. Tickets were free and given as a lottery among registrants, but that has since closed, so I may be your only hope. I am being overnighted 5 pairs (maybe 10 pairs) of tickets to the event. Since so many of you thought I was the 91X Ticket Thief and were tracking my moves, once I have the tickets in hand, I will announce via Twitter, Facebook, and here on this site that I have them. You will have to track me down through my check-ins...could be at The Evens at the Irenic, could be at M-Theory, a park, a taco shop, the Casbah, or any of my other many haunts and just ask for them. I'll keep you updated as long as I have them. Anyway, stay tuned!

DATE April 14, 2013
Benefitting The U.S.S. Midway Museum
VENUE U.S.S. Midway
FEATURING Black Joe Lewis
& the Honeybears (BIO)
Doors 7:00 PM

The U.S.S. Midway’s working days are behind her now. No longer does she patrol the seas protecting the great American ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. She is now a floating landmark, a living museum dedicated to veterans everywhere. On April 14th, Jack Daniel’s second Live at The Landmark concert will be live on the Midway and benefitting the U.S.S. Midway Museum. For 21 years, the roar of her flight deck has not been heard, but on April 14th, the roar will return.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 9-11, 2013

It's absolutely gorgeous outside today and my morning bike ride to Melanie's was lovely (though bumpy with the beat up streets of North Park). I'm babysitting Zane today and am looking forward to jumping on the bus after his nap and lunch to hang out at Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo for a couple hours. City Council was on a break so today is going to have all kinds of interesting agenda items in both the morning and afternoon session if you feel inclined to tune into City TV (Cox channel 24). In case you missed it, Tim Pyles and I were on KPBS Midday Edition yesterday to chat about bands coming through San Diego on their way to, from, or in between Coachella weekends. There are SO.MANY. great shows, including The Evens featuring Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat & Fugazi. The show is Wednesday night at the Irenic and tickets are only $8 with no service charge if you pick them up at M-Theory. If they run out, it appears there will be plenty of tickets at the door the night of the show. Keep in mind there are no openers, so the band will go on at 8pm. Wednesday-Thursday listings are after the jump.

Recommended Shows in San Diego April 8-14, 2013

The second week of April is filled with great musical happenings in San Diego. Many people are headed to that festival in the desert, but those who choose to stay in our cooler coastal climate will not be disappointed (musically). A closer look at the upcoming week reveals many shows of note...

Local H rocks Soda Bar on Tuesday, with Scott Lucas on the mend from being attacked recently in Russia...go see them perform and wish him the speediest of recoveries...Angel Olsen and Villages take the  stage at the Casbah...

On Wednesday The Evens, Ian MacKaye (Fugazi) and Amy Farina's indie pop band, play an early show at The Irenic (all ages)...LA quintet The Lonely Wild open for locals Barbarian at The Griffin...

Tin Can is the place to be on Thursday for hardcore rockers Pile (Boston) with Weatherbox slated as openers...

Dynamic singer/songwriter Kurt Vile headlines the Casbah on Friday playing songs from his new album Wakin on a Pretty Daze...highly recommended...

Seattle grunge band Mudhoney stops at the iconic Middletown venue for what promises to be a great show on Saturday with a new record in tow...

On Sunday Gayle Skidmore, Grant-Lee Phillips and Sean Watkins team for an intimate show at Lestat's...a perfect way to complete the weekend...Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears make an appearance on the USS Midway (invite only)...

Looks (and sounds) like a terrific week to me. Enjoy the great music in our beautiful city...

Things To Do In San Diego: April 6-8, 2013

I don't know if it was taking WebMD's advice for home remedies or the heavy dose of Bulleit Rye that I consumed last night, but Humpty Dumpty is put back together again, and it couldn't come at a better time because tonight's show at the Irenic is going to be amazing. It's also gorgeous out today, and though we spent most of it indoors and I had to handle a few hours of work, everything is just peachy. Please note that Jaymay has canceled her Sunday show at Soda Bar, but Kayoko and Saba will still perform. Saturday Through Monday archives are after the jump.

North Park Festival of Arts Main Stage Lineup

This year's North Park Festival of Arts is next month and though lineups were supposed to all be announced together, some people got a little over excited and have been announcing their participation. So I figure I might as well just spill the beans, especially because I am *SO EXCITED* about this year's lineup. This is just the Main Stage lineup, I'll add Dang's Bar Pink Beer Garden Stage lineup when I get the go ahead, but it is pretty sick, too. The times might be adjusted slightly, but this is more or less what you can expect.

11-11:40 School of Rock San Diego Covers set
11:50-12:30 Chess Wars (new project of Dustin Lothspeich of Old Tiger & Jake Najor of The Styletones)
Craft Mafia fashion show
1-1:40 Midnight Pine
1:50-2:30 Michael McGraw & The Butchers
2:40-3:20 Bulletins (new project of Lorelei Plotczyk of Film School, Susie, Gharemani, Itai Faierman)
Craft Mafia doggy fashion show
3:50-4:30 I*Wish*I
4:40-5:45 The Palace Ballroom

The North Park Festival of Arts is FREE and ALL AGES (except for the beer garden and the ticketed Craft Beer Block, which are both 21+) and takes place on Saturday, May 18. Mark your calendars!!

Things To Do In San Diego: April 4-5, 2013

What a week! Tim is out of town, so while I've been trying to keep up with Casbah duties, my cousin was in town from NYC so we were running around with family, Darren's daughter is on Spring Break so we've been trying to have some fun, all the while I'm fighting with all of my might to kick this sore throat and fluish feeling I've been having. Today, if I can win out with mind over matter, I'll be at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to see the butterflies and enjoy the day. The great news is my lineup for the North Park Festival of Arts is all set, so we'll be announcing that very soon. Thanks to everyone who submitted, I'm sorry my stage can only hold a handful of acts. Listings through next Thursday are after the jump. And, though I'm not sure if my mom is still reading my blog, today is my parents' 43rd wedding anniversary which is a pretty amazing thing, so congratulations to my loving parents. Thank you for showing such incredible love and respect to each other as a model that it could happen in my life and that he was totally worth the wait.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 2-3, 2013

I'm trying to keep my energy up but I have this nagging feeling like I'm getting a late season flu or something and my whole body is a little achy. It didn't stop me from a great weekend of bike riding with Darren and hanging with family while my cousin is visiting from New York. There are some great shows this week so hopefully I can fend off any illness so I can enjoy Phosphorescent and all the other good stuff this week. Tuesday and Wednesday archives are after the jump.
