Weekend Show Recommendations January 25-27, 2013
As the month of January is nearing its end, the momentum for live music shows is building. This means touring bands as well as locals begin to ramp (up) their schedules, resulting in a greater number of shows being offered. After perusing the upcoming weekend listings, several shows grabbed my attention. Friday night brings a great show to Winston's in OB, featuring The Heavy Guilt and Orange County rockers The Steelwells. The other show of note on Friday is down at the Casbah, where North County residents Dead Feather Moon hit the stage after Blackout Party and The Beautiful View. My first choice for Saturday will take me to the UCSD campus for a great show with two of LA's better bands, El Ten Eleven and Races, at The Loft. A solid backup would be San Diego's own The Donkeys, who are headlining a show at The Griffin. If you prefer to go there, make sure and arrive early to catch opener Social Studies from San Francisco. Dead Meadow will bring their heavy rock to the Casbah on Saturday, making this a great night of shows. Wrapping up the weekend this Sunday are the duo of Adam Green (The Moldy Peaches) & Binki Shapiro (No Joy) appearing at The Griffin. This show is being presented by Eric Howarth of Bring On the Bright Lights. LA's JJAMZ are opening the show and are definitely worth seeing live (SD Music Thing). The other option for Saturday features Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) and The Maldives at Soda Bar. Ken will also be appearing earlier that night at M-Theory Music (5 pm).
All in all, a packed weekend awaits, filled with great music. Most importantly, going out to support live music in San Diego is the main objective, resulting in venues being able to continue providing quality shows for the attendees.

Mike’s Weekly Pick: Ezra Furman and the Harpoons @ The Loft at UCSD Saturday May 7, 2011

As I sit here on this sweltering Monday afternoon fondly contemplating what an amazing month April was in terms of shows, I quickly realize that May is no slouch either. In fact, this first week of the month alone promises to be spectacular. Sure, I could take the easy way out and say Fleet Foxes is my weekly pick, and while it promises to be a singularly special night, it has also been sold out for ages. I could have chosen William Fitzsimmons as your Foxes alternative, but Jeff beat me to it with his own weekly pick. No matter, because as I peep what’s coming up this week there is one show that really jumps up to grab me: Ezra Furman and the Harpoons.
I’ve personally been hooked on this band since hearing the first two tracks (“We Should Fight” and “Take Off Your Sunglasses”) from 2008’s Inside the Human Body-a couple of romping, knee-slapping, jangly, eerie, head-bobbing anthems, highlighted of course by Furman’s truly unique voice and cutting lyrics. They’re now out touring in support of the recently released (and band’s third) LP Mysterious Power, which is probably one of the top 5 or so new records I’ve heard this year. And while I could take another crack at describing the band in a "clever or insightful so as to make you want to go" kind of way, might it not be easier to let them speak for themselves? Like this, from the “bio” on their Facebook page:
Furman gallops and crashes around the stage like an asylum-bound Buddy Holly complete with endearing hiccups and frightening tics. He not only christens every tour with a nom de rock, but also titles each individual gig. Furman’s witty and effusive conversations with the audience, along with his heightened attention to the crowd’s prevailing mood and the shows named like children, creates an extremely personalized feel for every performance. The band grinds out riffs stoically and belts out harmonies spiritedly as they lay the aural ties to support the verbal locomotion of Furman as he careens and caroms about, filling the room with the boiling-hot emotional steam of a fully bared soul.
I mean, really, who doesn’t want to witness that kind of spectacle? Need more convincing? Check out this video of the aforementioned “Take Off Your Sunglasses.”
Ezra Furman and the Harpoons will appear this Saturday May 7, at UCSD’s the Loft, with Tristen and The Apache Relay in support. Do not miss this!

Tonight: Middle Brother at The Loft
Middle Brother is making their debut performance in San Diego tonight at the Loft and while I'd like to strongly nudge you to go check them out, the show looks like it might be sold out. The band features Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and John McCauley of Deer Tick. All three are incredible performers with their own bands, but together are a force to be reckoned with. They made their debut at SXSW 2010 and I had the chance to catch them in LA in December and I was a giddy schoolgirl throughout their performance. It was also pretty incredible to see members of Dawes backing Robbie Robertson this week on Letterman. Hopefully each band will return individually this summer, in the meantime, here's the playlist from their December show.

Are you ready for the The Hood Internet?

The Hood Internet are in town tomorrow and they are going to kick your ass, sonically of course! The mash-up maestros from Chi-Town are back in support of their newest mixtape, The Hood Internet Volume Five. For those of you not familiar with this incredibly handsome duo, think party rocking mash-ups a la Girl Talk but less ADD and more witty. What started as a casual project between STV SLV and ABX has lead to so much more, seeing The Hood take their show all over the world! They have remixed and produced tracks with the likes of Das Racist, GZA and Kid Static just to name a few and as far as mash-ups go, no one is safe from their selection! Michael Jackson vs Ratatat, Arcade Fire vs Blondie, Kanye West vs Journey, Fleetwood Mac vs Daft Punk, Ghostface Killah vs Beirut, Major Lazer vs Dirty Projectors...the list goes on and on and on.
If you have nothing better to do tomorrow, come down to The Loft at UCSD (Tuesday, February 22, 2011 / 8:00 PM) and prepare for a dance party like no other. Also, be sure to check out their website www.thehoodinternet.com where you can download (FOR FREE/GRATIS!!!) all their mixes and tracks and stream them live when you're at work tomorrow deciding if your cheap ass is going to shell out $10 to go see this dope ass DJ duo.

Cary Brothers at the Loft- Wednesday Night
When Cary Brothers gets to San Diego, I want someone to immediately take him to the closest taco shop and buy him a California Burrito. I don't know why I decide to bring these up in every interview, but Mr. Brothers has never had the pleasure of sinking his teeth into what I think should be named "the official food of San Diego." (Mayor Sanders, if you're reading this, are you hiring???) Being raised in Nashville probably had a lot of up-sides, but never having french fries in a burrito is simply not what I call a happy childhood. But all kidding aside, when you go to his show, (And I know you will by the end of this article…), take the poor guy an El Zarape's California Burrito.
Cary Brother's latest album, "Under Control" has a continuity that is not replicated in most of the albums that I keep in my car. (Justin Bieber should've won that grammy… and yes… I inserted this into the middle of this paragraph…) "My first album felt like it was a bunch of 'singles', and I just wanted this record to be something you could listen to from beginning to end and just have it all make sense." said Cary while we talked on the phone Monday afternoon. And with songs like "Belong" (Listen NOW), which seems to bleed nothing but pure emotion and offer unexpected twists, it is a refreshing change from the standard 4/4, 140BPM songs that we hear on the radio. This album proves that Cary is not only a musical genius, but feeding a counter culture that most music lovers may never tap into.
Cary has a pretty full year this year. He is going to be doing a US tour with his good buddy from school, Joshua Radin and girlfriend, (Unviersal's newly signed), Laura Jansen. "This tour is going to be a love fest", said Cary. "Every single person on that bus is a good friend of mine. I've been really lucky in the last year that all the touring I get to do is with friends." Along with Radin and Jansen, Cary will be touring with one of San Diego's favorite guitarists, Brandon Walters, who most people will recognize from backing Greg Laswell and graduating from Point Loma Nazarene University.
I would suggest this show to anyone who is in town, because while Cary calls himself an anglophile, (Look it up…) he could easily be mistaken for a San Diego native. His laid back style and humorous outlook, made the conversation feel like less of an interview, and more of just two guys cracking jokes about old friends. (For example, he called Laswell a "Burrito snob" and told me his favorite music placement was a steamy Heather Graham scene… And yes... I looked it up after we talked...) He plans on allowing the music to be free and less restricted than his last tour with Sara Bareilles. "I'm going to take the room on a ride for an hour, rather than trying to simply make them cry, or blowing their ears off…" He plans on breaking the set down so the wall between performer and audience is broken, and he is able to possibly even play "Unplugged" for a few songs. (See... the show at the Loft sounds really good now... doesn't it???)
Cary holds a tight grip on his music in the sense that he doesn't want anyone to tell him what to do when he's recording. (And I quote, "I hope no one ever holds a gun to my head and tells me to write 'pop' music..." -Cary Brothers) This passion for keeping his indie roots is obvious throughout the album and even in the 30 minute conversation we had. Cary is joined by 2010 San Diego Music Award nominee for Best Acoustic, Kenny Eng, who has had a great year and is making appearances in bigger and bigger shows. (Kenny also follows me on twitter, so he must be a good guy!!!)
So make your way out to the Loft at UCSD Wednesday night, and take him a California Burrito, and if he has already had one because someone else beat you to it, enjoy it for me. Cause as much as I'm digging LA… I'm definitely starting to get skinnier off of the lack of good mexican food here.
(For lovers of Greg Laswell, Joshua Radin, and Snow Patrol)

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Nicole Atkins and The Black Sea @ The Loft Friday February 18, 2011
New Jersey bred singer Nicole Atkins will be making her return to San Diego this Friday with her revamped (and renamed) band The Black Sea. A strong powerful voice is her greatest strength, and Nicole is able to compose pop songs which highlight this characteristic. While growing up listening to 60s bands such as Traffic and Cream are not the norm for a young musician, the inspiration from this era is clearly evident in her songs. After schooling in North Carolina, Nicole moved to New York to perform at open mic venues in the city. A residency at Piano’s got her the attention she needed to release her first full length, Neptune City, in 2008 on Columbia Records. Her vocals are showcased throughout the album. This led to touring and a set of circumstances which comprised a split with the major label, firing her entire band and breaking up with her boyfriend. All this was followed by the recent release of Nicole’s sophomore LP Mondo Amore. A new label and backing band are part of the fresh start for Nicole Atkins and The Black Sea. Your chance to see the “new” Nicole is this Friday at The Loft. Many people I talk to have still not been to the intimate venue at UCSD. I urge you to make an effort to change that and the reward promises to be a performance by a talented singer with a voice you will long remember.

KPRI Presents: One eskimO at The Loft, 1.28.2011
Kristian was sick, but Adam, Jamie, and Pete convinced me that we should do an interview and volunteered to interview themselves, which to me was the best 10 minutes of video I've probably ever shot.
Bob ended up showing up, as did Marc Balanky, who shoots video for SoundDiego, so the need for my interview for NBC or KPRI dissolved, so I decided to post it as is, raw and uncut. Because Kristian was sick, you can tell that Pete and Jaime were incredibly nervous, so they're both pretty vocally quiet in most of these videos, but as it was probably something that won't happen again, here are all of the videos. Click the right and left buttons to navigate through the playlist. Take the time to watch them in HD.
Huge thanks to Liz at The Loft, Bob, Chris, Haley, Magi, and Christina at KPRI, Marc, and especially to Pete, Jaime, and Adam for being such great sports. Hope you feel better soon, Kristian! (Check SoundDiego.com next week for more of my photos. I'm like my own little multimedia channel and shot photos with my right hand as I filmed with my left. )

Don't Sleep SD...

This Friday at The Loft (@ 8:30pm) we will be graced with none other than the mighty Baths. His album Cerulean was on my top 10 list of 2010 and on repeat in my mind for the better half of the year. His ability to blend electronic textures with stuttering beats, ghostly choirs and lush melodies is enough to make a grown man cry...in a good way! And as if the music alone was not a good enough reason to see this man in person, his live show is technically bulletproof. If you thought you had skills on the MPC, think again...and watch this: http://pitchfork.com/tv/%23/episode/2730-baths/1

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin @ The Loft Friday November 19, 2010
With one of the more unusual and lengthy band names on the current music scene, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is currently touring to promote their third studio release, Let it Sway. The major difference in this album from its predecessors lies in the production, as the band enlisted the help of Chris Walla, and the results are immediately evident. Sometimes a band can be guilty of trying to do too much instead of primarily focusing on the music itself. It is important to note that this is a group comprised of high school friends and is still young by industry standards. The latest release doesn’t try to overdo anything and the result is a pleasant listen throughout. How this translates to the live show will be interesting to watch. A young band playing in front of a young audience just might be the perfect recipe for a fine night of music. A great way to kick off the weekend at The Loft, the intimate venue at UCSD.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Jukebox The Ghost @ The Loft Tuesday September 28, 2010
Washington DC born and Philadelphia based indie band Jukebox The Ghost is touring in support of their recently released sophomore effort Everything Under The Sun. Led by keybordist and vocalist Ben Thornewill, the three piece seems to have their formula well in hand, which is consumer friendly indie pop songs which work well in the live setting. Constant touring over the last four years with only taking time off to record has worked well for the band. Playing on The Late Show With David Letterman earlier this month was just the boost the band needed. It will be fun to see the students (and non-students) interchange with the band this Tuesday @ The Loft on the UCSD campus. A note to those who have not ventured to this venue: the lighting and sound are excellent while maintaining an intimate feel with beer, wine and food available. Watching a band gain the audience it deserves is what the music industry is all about. Enjoying the music without having to overthink is the perfect way to watch a live show. A great way to start the week ahead.
