Family Fun: Things To Do In San Diego
On Wednesday, I dropped by the Sherman Heights Community Center and along with picking up the best tamales I've had in a long time (made by volunteers at the center), I got to preview the beautiful Dia De Los Muertos altars created by people in the community. Stupidly I left my camera in the car, but trust me, they're beautiful and this weekend there's a whole festival to check them out.
There's also a spooky festival at Balboa Park. Kids under 17 free with paid adult admission ($35 for a 5 museum pass) but there are also free things happening around the park today. In fact, as I'm writing, the sun is peeking through the clouds, so go see some double rainbows and enjoy the day in San Diego.
Last, I already posted about the big garage sale up over at Space4Art, but in case you missed it, check out the info here. The event starts at 1pm with music starting at 3.
While I'd love to keep posting, it's time for me to get out and enjoy San Diego. ciao, babies.

The Visual Underground Returns to CASBAH - Oct 29th.
The dirty pirate hookers of film+rock+art are back. I cannot tell you how surprised I am to be doing another show as a member of The Visual Underground. I can even go as far as to say that at one in my life I swore I would never do one again. Well, like the oath I made about never drinking again, I broke my promise.
It was 2003 (or 2002), when Gavin Allen and myself (John-Ryan Shea aka AVicious), then film students at San Diego State, went to Sundance to work the NoDance Film Festival. Gavin was a pompous ass I knew that like Billy Wilder movies and looked like a reject from a Chico State catalog. Trying to save some scratch to get there we shared the gas bill and set off on the road to independent film land. When we arrived at Sundance and got to the condo we found they had us bunking up with the preverbal "guy on the couch" and a bunch of other guys discussing the relevance of old George Lucas vs. new George Lucas - yeah, fucking lame. We tried to join in the conversation but soon said screw it and went back to our shared room to crash for the night. Well, he couldn't sleep because of the time change and I couldn't sleep because he kept farting. I would like to think that no homoerotic thoughts were part of the night but after an uncomfortable hour and half of lying there and wishing for fresh air Gavin broke the silence...
"Let's get out of here and go get a drink," he said.
From that moment on we hit to the lily white bars of Park City and binged on the delicious 2.5% alcohol beers and doubles where we needed to pour the second shot in ourselves. Needless to say it took quite some time to garner an adequate buzz. The time allowed us to get to know each other. To dig deep and discover that going to movies about the Ramones & sitting through shitty short films is just much easier with alcohol. It was beautiful to find out that a pompous ass who likes Billy Wilder movies and a wildly attractive and yet rouged guy who likes Francious Truffaut movies could co-exist if they could drink together. Hell, they might even form a bond that would forge the beginning of what would become The Visual Underground.
Returning to San Diego with the west coast premiere of "The Ramones: End of the Century" documentary we hit the Ken Club, sold out and knew we had an awesome idea. People like to drink shit and do shit. We started at the Ken Club, moved to the Whistle Stop & were graduated to The Casbah.
7-8 or so years later with over 50+ shows, 3 Venues, 400+ films, 80+ bands and 60+ artists having worked with - THE VISUAL UNDERGROUND RETURNS!!!
This Friday October 29th, Gavin Allen, John-RyanShea & David Mishoulam will reunite for TVU Presents:SPOOKY VUE 6 "The Zombie Prom" at the Casbah.
We will be joined by artists:
JJ Hynes
Kelly Hutchinson (Dark Vomit)
The Infusion Project
Wendy Teague
Lindy Ivey.
Performing will be:
The Creepy Creeps &
The Lords of the New Removed Church (featuring Gary Shuffler)
The film fest continues and we surely will not disappoint - Let's just say a vampire and a menstrual cycle are part of it.
We would love to see you down there and to be part of one of San Diego's all time best Film+Rock+Art Shows (even though the beautiful and wildly talented Rosey panned one of our last shows - love you girl!).

Contest: Dawes Prize Pack
All of that said, I'm laptopping in bed as I slowly start my day, and I've got the band's CD playing and thought it was time to hook you up. The band is signed to ATO Records and the label was kind enough to send me some freebies to share. The band will be setting out on tour with their final night of tour at the Casbah on November 27, so I'm gonna offer the first of my prize packages this week. You'll get the band's full-length CD, North Hills, a 7" vinyl that has a live version of "When My Time Comes" (split with a live version of "In The Deep End" by Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons), and a pair of tickets to their show at the Casbah (21+). To enter, shoot me an email (sddialedin at gmail) with "Dawes" as the subject (include first and last name and a phone number) and tell me your favorite song from the video playlist. Or tell me why you wanna see Dawes. Or tell me how much you love me. Or tell me about your hometown. Or tell me about your dog. Whatever...just no sob stories about how broke you are and how you can't afford the $12 advance cover charge because those are the lamest and I'll just delete them. You can buy tickets here if you're not a winner. I'll close this one on Friday, but stay tuned because I have three more identical packages to offer leading up to the show and all entries will be considered, so if you don't win, your entry will roll over into the next contest.

Rocktoberfest 2010
My friend Ryan was one of the beermeister's for the night and I hardly recognized him in his getup (and through my beer goggles). I have to say I was proud that I mostly avoided twitter and though I could've taken more pictures, this event felt more about being in the moment and enjoying what North Park and San Diego have to offer. And though I'm biased (since I have close ties to both the Casbah and West Coast Tavern), I'd say it was a pretty incredible night for the inaugural year. I'm not without feedback (like it probably doesn't need to be a twelve hour event), but feedback is part of what I do. If you have comments, good or bad, feel free to leave them in the comments or shoot me an email and I will see to it that your opinions are heard.
As for the music, I caught Cash'd Out, Fitz & The Tantrums, Get Back Loretta, and The Silent Comedy and I was especially impressed by the amount of people who were unfamiliar with some or all of the bands who participated anyway. I saw a lot of merch being sold and it was another chance for people to see what kind of amazing talent we have in this city.
I'm sorry that I missed the earlier acts, like Little Hurricane, The Styletones, and the Midnight Rivals, but believe me, I didn't need an extra 3 hours of beer drinking, and I was able to catch Midnight Rivals later that night at Eleven.
As I said, my camera was mostly in my purse the duration of the night, but I did grab some video of Fitz because I never quite pull it off at the Casbah when they play. Here are three videos from the band, and if you didn't see my post last week, make sure you watch the band's episode on Live From Daryl's House.

Many of the paintings have already been sold, so this is your chance to see the collection before the pieces make their way to their private collectors. And if you haven't checked in awhile, go see some of his photos and stuff at WhatOSaw or check out his new site focused on guitars and gear at EFXPorn.
All of O's paintings are on trash bags or wood. The show will be on Saturday, October 23 at Subtext Gallery, across the street from the Casbah and will feature a performance by Little White Teeth. The show is one night only, from 6-10pm.

Things To Do In San Diego: October 19-20, 2010
I love waking up to the sound of rain in San Diego, but I also know that means that everyone shrivels up and can't leave the house because god forbid you get wet...but there are some really great shows tonight and for the rest of the week. This weather is supposed to clear up by the weekend (if you ever wanna believe meterologists) and though it might still be cool, it's fall and you should take advantage when we actually have seasonal weather because it doesn't happen very often, and seriously, Rocktoberfest is going to be awesome! Tickets are only $15 if you buy in advance and there are NO service charges whatsoever, so you're not gonna get tricked at checkout.

Some Thoughts On Bullying #itgetsbetter
While I know that there are kids who only get one side of the stick, I think that there are a lot of kids who have seen both sides of bullying. In elementary school, I was the person that befriended the underdog. In preschool I was a nosepicker and a booger-eater, but even at a young age, I thought by kindergarten I could graduate from that reputation. Fat chance of that. (I should also mention that from as early as four years old, I was the girl that would crush on boys, setting me up for the “slut” label later on in life. I can recite the first and last names of every boy I crushed on since preschool. Yes, preschool. Eric Miranda, I still hope to find you on Facebook someday. )
Booger eaters, kids with glasses, bed-wetters, chubbies…all of us were already fodder for bullying as early as kindergarten. I seemed to always link up with the underdogs. Having been to preschool, I didn’t cry when I was dropped off at kindergarten, but I already saw the ways that kids teased one another, throwing sand in the playground (and giving everyone a good lice scare), and the way parents would stand and coddle their own and encourage toughness. The stinky kids especially felt the pain. Like most districts and lines drawn, there were kids who lived in dilapidated apartments and kids who were fortunate enough to live in big elegant houses, all attending the same school. The funny thing for me was that it wasn’t until late in high school that I felt privileged to be a house-dweller, third mortgage and all, versus my friends who lived in air conditioned townhouses. To me, they were rich and we were poor. The fact that this notion even entered my mind at such a young age disgusts me.
At 9, I started getting tennis lessons (at a discount for being the first to enroll) and all the girls had cute tennis skirts and my mom was buying me culottes from the cheap clothing section of a Lucky supermarket for $3.99 a pair. I have to admit that I was always a flat out dork (still am). I was picked on, but I never had a hard time picking back, because unlike them, I was “gifted”, so I could say that my best friends from 2nd through 5th grade were my teachers (Mrs. Smitko for 2nd & 3rd, Mr. Baurmann for 4th, and Mr. Banner for 5th) and I never felt alone. I had this strange confidence that lead me to run for student council in fourth grade and win (and again in 5th & 6th grade), though I was getting dead birds and dead lizards in my desk as gifts from my peers. I was the tomboy, but the first of the girls in my class to wear a bra. Suddenly the boys that were my best friends and I was challenging athletically saw me as the most dreaded thing, a girl, and I found myself without friends because they now took aim at snapping my training bra. This didn’t get any easier for the rest of my elementary school days.
My friends were always the transient ones…they’d live in Chula Vista for a year then move away. Jenny L. in first grade; Jennifer C. in second; Tracy T. in fourth. Tracy was the badass. She had monumental trophies for her martial arts, so people generally didn’t fuck with us, but when she moved, the Rosey Hater’s Club formed. They went so far as to make ID cards and had a song. “My name is Rosey/I come from Posey/I am so nosey/My name is Rosey”. Seriously. I would’ve been more butthurt but I felt above their lack of lyrical skills and just carried on mostly oblivious…besides the dead animal gifts in my desk. I carried on through elementary school, ended up in the class that mixed 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in one room. I was in patrol (crossing guards) and learned to mute who I really was because with the biggest tits in 6th grade, you’re a slut just for developing. I got slapped in the face once for liking “Juan” without knowing he was “going around with” Becca who knew him as “Johnny”.
By the time junior high came around, there was no chance I’d make it at the local school without a slut reputation (again, just for being the first with a bra), so I made an intra-district transfer to Hilltop, the whitest school in the district besides Bonita. I was able to create who I wanted to be, to be an outsider but quickly find new friends, and then turn those friends over when I realized they were exactly what I didn’t want to be. This is where I went from being bullied to perhaps being a bully. I didn’t have to take shit from anyone, and if I wanted to like a boy, I didn’t have to think about who he was with in 4th grade. At the same time, I don’t think I was ever cruel, I just never gave in to the crap. In no time before or after junior high have I ever experienced such an element of “fake” and perhaps that’s the greatest gift ever. I was friends with the girl who ended up being homecoming queen in high school, but I was also friends with the girl who invited everyone to her Bat Mitzvah except for me, and we’re best friends nearly twenty years later.
Perhaps my greatest saving grace was that I was lucky enough to meet Xan in ninth grade. She was American, but raised most of her life in France. She was different and so cool for it. I remember seeing her for the first time in my math class in a Rolling Stones t-shirt, men’s 501s, and a fresh pair of black chucks, and she seemed like a rock star. She had stories that weren’t about impressing or showing off, it was just who she was, and she seemed so above the vapid bullshit going on at the time. We were quick best friends and my experiences with her were amazing…she lived in Tijuana and thus time together wasn’t about cliques and boys, it was about seeing a whole new world, and knowing she would be gone just as soon as she had arrived. People assumed we were lesbians and though it wasn’t even close to true, we really didn’t give a fuck, and the 14 or so months that we went to school together were the turning point in my life…of living as I wanted, being true to myself, shit…discovering exactly who I was…
I was a girl who got beat up at the bus stop for not being Mexican enough, and I was challenged at school just as much for not being white enough, which seems hysterical now because I don’t really know what any of that means. I was smart and I really cared about learning. I was athletic and really cared about excelling in tennis, and I was loved enough by my family and a few friends that got me through a whole bunch of bullshit. By the end of high school, I ended up being class president, being on the homecoming court (to the dismay of many girly girls), and proud to say that I pretty much knew everyone in my graduating class by first and last name.
The thing that I think about now, for girls who are going through that same bullshit is that you never really know what leads someone to be a dick. And NOBODY has the stranglehold on being dicks like junior high girls…they’re starting their periods, they’re fighting over girlfriends, they’re fighting for the affections of boys, and they…WE…are fucking cruel to one another. We don’t realize until years later that we, as women, are being raised to fight each other. I was lucky to live in home with both of my parents, a couple who met in their late teens /early twenties and are still together forty years later…but my peers mostly experienced divorce and disastrous love/hate situations that make them competitive…not academically, not athletically, but competitive with love. Where does the cycle end? I have no idea, but I might have an idea of where it starts. Add to that politics, reality TV, talking heads on “news” channels, and you fucking wonder where bullying comes from? Are you fucking kidding me?
I can’t say I came out unscathed. I had fights. I still have fights. Only now as an adult we call them “haters” instead of “bullies”. “They’re just jealous”, we say, or perhaps we just develop an image of them in our minds and then realize maybe they’re just shy like us. They are us. We are them. I don’t know, to be honest. But what I do know is that no matter what, we are loved. I am loved. Everyone has darkness and feels alone. Horrible shit happens all the time. But really good things happen, too. I am not nearly in a position of comfort or wealth or professional success that I thought I would be at this point in my life, but there is so much good shit happening all of the time that it DOES NOT FUCKING MATTER. I am not a believer in “everything happens for a reason” nor do I necessarily believe that everything works out in the end. I believe that a lot of those bullies…those fucking assholes that are so overconfident early in life completely fail…but I also believe those are the fucking assholes that end up playing on your stupid pro sports teams or running corporations or stealing billions from taxpayers because they can, or worst of all, being your dickhead boss. But FUCK ALL OF THEM. They will exist and carry on. But so will we. The fighters of the underdog. The creatives. The dreamers. The believers. We’re the smarties. We’re the ones who carry the torch for evolution and education and art and living and loving and being the best we can at being exactly who we are. Fuck them. Yay, us. We are the scrappers. We will survive.
We have to.

Blind Pilot & Cory Chisel "Bring It On Home To Me"
The Habitat Carries On
The long and short of it is that Roy bought a house in North Park and is planning on building a small home recording studio, so he is no longer occupying the beautiful Golden Hill spot. The good news is that the new occupants are none other than Zack Nielsen, of Sezio.org, Jackson Milgaten of The Boat House, The Paddle Boat, and Single Screen Records, and Dylan Ousley, a graphic designer and culture jammer (see themotivatedyouth.com).
So that means The Habitat has new beginnings as well. Just as I said in a previous Myspace blog, I left open a 1% chance that shows at The Habitat might return. And return they will! The new boys are planning to resume house shows and they've already got one on the books for November. They also plan to utilize the space for art showings. So the future is very bright for that old Craftsmen in Golden Hill.
Zack has set up a site for the new Habitat here. Be sure to follow them on twitter for upcoming show announcements.

Guest Review:The Weepies & Lucy Schwartz @ Winston's
Lucy Schwartz opened for The Weepies at Winston's in Ocean Beach, San Diego on Wednesday the 13th of October. Her flowing melodic femininity was an immediate refreshment in the small sold-out venue. A sea of 20, 30 and 40 somethings were mesmerized with this emerging songstress, only 20-years old, with an innate musical talent far beyond her years. The mellow and mostly female crowd appreciated the short but perfect set that set the cheerful tone for the rest of the night.
A few minutes before hitting the stage, The Weepies created a whimsical moment with some bubbles - always a welcome idea. They finally went on around 11 pm, the somewhat restless looking crowd couldn't have been more ready for their mellow pop-folk sound. California duo Deb Talan and Steve Tannen truly imparted upon the crowd their likable chemistry through a display of fun melodies and relatable lyrics. They had a son together 3 years ago, affectionately referencing him between songs in a gesture that shed some light on their well-crafted tunes that clearly came from the heart.
One high point was a new, upbeat song, "I Was Made for Sunny Days," off their August 2010 album, "Be My Thrill." With lyrics like:
Found the look you gave me, when we were first in bloom; when I thought that you might save me from the dark side of the moon. Instead we both went walking to the shadows and the plume, and we never did stop talking; you still light up the moon
they make it seem effortless to be so real. The soulful sound carried smoothly throughout the crowd, creating a sense of happiness that made everyone want to keep swaying along and listening intently. The Weepies met in a Cambridge folk club 9 years ago and haven't toured since 2006. Welcome back guys, it's great to have you on the scene again. Their show was reminiscent of a condensed version of a romantic comedy, since they sang like a true life soundtrack.
Lucy Schwartz and The Weepies complemented each other very well. This was the perfect way to spend a girl's night with a good friend; nothing beats great live music at a local beach club, a couple of drinks and quality time out of the house. Connect with the weepies at www.theweepies.com and be sure to visit www.lucyschwartzmusic.com to stay in the loop with Lucy. Thank you again Rosey at www.sddialedin.com for the tickets to the show!
