Music In Ads: Dawn Commercial feat. Joe Purdy

Sometimes I'm more of a girly girl than I care to admit. I watched an entire Hallmark movie this week, mostly for the longform weepy card commercials in between. A long time ago I posted Joe Purdy's "Just Can't Seem To Get Right Today" when it was featured in a Kia commercial. I saw this ad (while watching Real Housewives, no less) and was probably a little more touched by it with the recent oil catastrophe in the Gulf. As Bill Maher tweeted so succintly, "Every asshole who ever chanted 'Drill baby drill' should have to report to the Gulf coast today for cleanup duty." Anyway, here's the commercial, which uses his song "Wash Away", which apparently was also used in a pivotal scene from Lost.

Joe Purdy is also part of The Voice Project, which promotes peace in northern Uganda through music, raising awareness and money for livelihood programs, vocational training, and child soldier rehabilitation. Women choirs sing contemporary music, while musicians supporting the cause by being a part of their "cover chain". The performances are amazing and you should definitely check out the videos there.

MGMT Set To Play Open Air Theatre July 15

MGMT's sophomore release, Congratulations, was recently released to both adoring and repulsed reviews. Personally, the record is exactly what I expected from the pair, kinda out there. It's been growing on me, but for a band that created their own niche in modern music, most critics had higher expectations of the band. Regardless, for those of us who are still fans, the band has added several dates to their tour, including a stop at the Open Air Theatre at SDSU. Tickets go onsale on Friday through Ticketmaster.

Friday Night: Joel P West, Black Mamba, Lemon Sun & Leopold & His Fiction

I know it's only Tuesday, but let me help you plan your Friday night.

First, start of at the Museum Of Contemporary Art La Jolla for an enchanting evening with Black Mamba and Joel P West. It's a big Sezio, Holiday Matinee, & Ford Fiesta production and it sounds like the show will something quite incredible.
For info, check out Sezio. For tickets, click the banner at the top of the page.

Behind The Scenes w/ Joel P. West & The Tree Ring from Holiday Matinee on Vimeo.

After the show ends, make your way down to Bar Pink for Leopold & His Fiction and Lemon Sun. Both are incredible bands...the former from the Bay Area, the latter from LA. If you happened to be at the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros show at the Belly Up, you likely saw the opener He's My Brother, She's My Sister. The brother in question, Robert Kolar, is the front man for Lemon Sun. I've seen both bands live and they're both worth checking out. Below is a new video from Lemon Sun. Also, grab this free MP3 by right-clicking and choosing Save As. "Touch The Lightning"

New Video: Hotel St George "Little Childrens Bones"

Hotel St. George has been pretty busy with all their music videos lately. Just got this one emailed to me.

And if you missed it, they recently shot one at M-Theory for "That's Why I Drink Every Night".

Avi Buffalo, Casbah, 4.21.2010

Last week Avi Buffalo opened for Japandroids at the Casbah. His debut album is coming out on Sub Pop Records tomorrow and I highly recommend that you grab it. In the meantime, here's a playlist from the set last week.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: The Antlers @ The Casbah Wednesday April 28, 2010

Brooklyn-based indie band The Antlers will make their first appearance as headliners at the Middletown venue this Wednesday. This will be their fourth visit to San Diego and the reason is a simple one: their music is full of passion and relies heavily on crescendo building anthemic songs mostly from their highly praised 2009 effort Hospice. Peter Silberman and his band mates are serious about their music and it shows during their performance. It is critical for the audience to connect to this form of music which deals with difficult subject matter. Music lovers who truly share this passion will fill the room and see a band fully immersed in their live set. I have personally been riveted to their sets each time I have witnessed them (the previous three). The Casbah should be the best place to see a band on the rise, so be part of something special and show the band some indie love this Wednesday. You won't regret it.

Phantogram sets the stage.

Watch an unofficial video of Kettering below.

Just found this one...even better:

Missing Person: Help Find Erick Wales- Update

Erick Wales was last seen on Monday, April 19th, at 6:30 in the morning. You can read all the known information on a site to help locate him here.

He is part of San Diego's music community and his family and friends are very concerned. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please call 619-301-9283
or call the San Diego Police Department 619-531-2000.

UPDATE: Erick's car was found this morning in Chicano Park by parking enforcement, most likely ticketing cars in the area of Chicano Park Day. More information is available here. Check the original website for more photos and information about Erick.

Family Festival Weekend

This weekend is one of my favorites in San Diego. Living in Kensington, there's always such a cool neighborhoody feeling about waking up and walking down Adams Avenue to check out the Roots Festival (and in September, the Adams Avenue Street Fair). Though I'm on about 4 hours sleep, I want to check out Blackout Party's early set, but before I get the walking shoes on, there are FOUR big events happening this weekend, all are family friendly, though I've learned in the past it's better to leave your pets at home, and they're all free. Get out and enjoy San Diego. Keep in mind all of the events are two day events except for Chicano Park Day, which is Saturday only. Make sure to check out the music schedules. Roots Fest has big acts this year like Glen Phillips, Sara Watkins, John Doe, The Watson Twins and more. Don't miss em.

Here are some old photos of Matt Curreri & The Ex-Friends at Artwalk:

Things To Do In San Diego: April 21-22, 2010

Once again I've taken some heat for my work over at SoundDiego.com. I will not apologize for the show recommendations that I make for that site. One of the reasons I'm drawn to the site is because it reaches a different audience than sddialedin.com and every other music rag or blog in town. Where I will pimp the shows I love here, over there I attempt to be a little diverse, hoping that people who would otherwise spend a night on the couch watching bad sitcoms might actually be inspired to check out music in San Diego. So yeah. Marcy Playground is playing tonight. I will be gushing over the radness of Avi Buffalo at the Casbah. Sometimes that's the way it goes. When I first heard about Avi, he was working with Beck, and some dude passed me some demos as I worked merch at the Casbah. We brought him down to North Park Music Thing last year. Barely out of high school, he landed a record deal on Sub Pop which will be released April 27. See the band tonight and you can say you saw them when.

Wednesday April 21, 2010:

  • Japandroids, Avi Buffalo, Meseta @ Casbah
  • Pat Metheny @ Spreckels Theatre

The Kissaway Trail, Belly Up, 4.19.2010

Meet my new favorite band. OK, maybe that's a stretch, but The Kissaway Trail opened for The Temper Trap on Monday night at the Belly Up and I was captivated from the very first song. Lyrically, musically, and charismatically, this band worked their way into my cold little heart. They're from Denmark and I certainly hope that doesn't impede on future tours because I am already looking forward to seeing them again. Their new record, Sleep Mountain, was released yesterday on Bella Union, but fortunately they had copies on hand at the show. You can check them out on the label site here. I'll try and get some titles on these videos when I have a sec, but for now, enjoy.

Incidentally, I was up front when The Temper Trap started but was tapped on my shoulder by security who told me cameras were not allowed. Apparently it was a band dictate, but for me it was permission to escape the crowd and listen to the show from the back of the room, incidentally passing about 15 cameras on my way out. Weird. Anyway, I'll just say while they gave a good performance, I left feeling that the openers far outshined the headliners. Check em out. You won't be sorry.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Bonobo @ The Casbah Tuesday April 20, 2010

British trip-hop chill out master Simon Green will bring his full band Bonobo this Tuesday to San Diego's premier venue for intimate shows. Initially Green used a lot of sampling in what was mainly a solo project. With the release of his fourth LP, Black Sands, no new real ground has been broken here. Rather, it is the familiar warmth of his songs that pulls you in and keeps you in his world. Bonobo is all about textured music and he is at the top of his game in this genre. When one excels at a certain style, there is no need to stray too far from what one does best.
In an era where noise rock, yelling (vs singing), and deadening the ears seem to be in vogue, relax and take it down several levels this Tuesday. Your ears and your heart will both thank you.

Yppah sets the stage.

KPRI Private Listener Concert: One eskimO

There were several reasons I wanted to see One eskimO this week when I heard they were performing. I've heard the band's single "Kandi" and it's pretty addictive. It kinda grew on me every time I heard it. I subscribe to the Lefsetz Letter, and there was some debate over the origin of the song's main sample, so that piqued my interest, too. I knew the band was performing at Coachella and this was their only other stop along the way, and it was at Sound Wave, the venue formerly known as Cane's, and I really wanted to check out the changes to the venue. Plus, I just love the private listener shows. KPRI gets great artists on the verge, I have several friends at the station, and the crowd seems to always have a mellow vibe, so there's no jockeying for position to see the band perform.

While the renovated Sound Wave can hold 800 people (830 we were told, if you count the balcony), because this was an off-the-record show, the label limited guests to 200, so there was plenty of rooom to roam.

When I arrived, I was happy to see my buddy Juan working security. He's worked at a bunch of venues around town over the years- House of Blues, The Ruby Room, what have you- so it's always nice to see a familiar face in unfamiliar territory. I asked him the lowdown and he was excited about working there, singing the praises of management. I wandered around and took some shots of the new place. I really dug the space. The side bar near the entrance has moved, the floor is more open, the stage is huge, and the sound and lighting look great. Probably the best change is that the windows are no longer covered, so the natural light as the sun set made the room feel warmer than before. The venue also now allows ins and outs, which is always nice.

Oz (KPRi 3-8pm)

Sometimes for private listener shows, a band will play four or five songs and call it a day, but One eskimO performed a full set of 11 songs. Naturally, I captured the set to share with you. One note, while I love LED lighting, my HD camera does not, so unfortunately it's not visually the most stunning video ever, but after this performance consider me a convert. Oz told me about the band's videos that accompany each song, and they're all available on their CD/DVD apparently, but you can watch them online at The WB, too, and they're gorgeous.

Here is the playlist with all but the first song they played (click the arrows to navigate through all 10 videos)

Oh, and about the debate over the origination of the "Kandi"...according to the Lefsetz Letter, it looks like One eskimO sampled this version of a song:

but the song was also recorded by Patsy Cline:

After some of his readers responded including Melanie Howard, turns out the song was written by her late husband Harlan Howard, and has been recorded by several musicians over the years.

The Weekend in San Diego

I posted all the listings for the weekend in San Diego, and it's a loaded weekend. Consider it something like a kickoff to outdoor festivities, which includes street fairs, concerts in the park, and our outdoor venues rolling out their summer concerts pretty much now through late September and even October. For nocturnal people like me, you might wanna get out and about during the day...with Record Store Day on Saturday, and Earth Fair, and a couple good daytime shows at Soda Bar and Queen Bee's on Sunday, it should be a fun-filled weekend. Looking ahead, the Adams Avenue Roots Fest, Artwalk, Beerfest and The North Park Festival of Arts are all in the pipeline...all enjoyable and free events.

That said, I came across an e-mail for a free event at Lux Art Institute that I thought I'd share.

A Dirty Little Town In South Florida Dies…

Shit man, another one of my favorite bands in S.D. just played their last show. Hialeah was one bad ass band, and if you had to chance to see Mike, Mario, and Justin do their thing then consider yourself lucky. Wednesday night at the Soda Bar they laid the band to rest in style, bringing the energy and cool that they always have. So long fellas, I know I’ll be seeing you all again, but man I’ll miss your beautiful little tunes.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 13-15, 2010

Bummed about missing Coachella? Don't be.

I'm not attending the Coachella Festival of Music and Art this year, and while there is nothing worse than hearing all of your friends talk about it in real life and on Facebook and Twitter, not to mention how every blogger and the press go on and on about the festival, I'm gonna give you some reasons to get over it. Or maybe I'm convincing myself? Either way, we'll get through this weekend together. I'm not saying I wouldn't accept comps if they came my way, but as of now, that's just not gonna happen. So here's me raining on the Coachella parade.

1. Money- I don't know about you, but I'm broke as a joke these days. Dropping nearly $300 on a ticket for three days is just not in my budget. Neither is spending money on festival food, lodging, and the transportation/gas to get there.

2. Weather- Did you know it is freaking hot as hell in the desert? The festival is now two weekends earlier in the year than when it started, but it's still hot as heck. While the festival provides outlets for shade and misting, it's still not very comfortable. Last year, I spent most of Sunday pouring water over my head, only to find that when the sun dropped I was freezing my ass off. Not very comfortable.

3. Everybody is VIP/Nobody is VIP- So the ideal Coachella situation is getting hooked up with tickets by someone high on the foodchain, like Goldenvoice. The thing is, most people don't. Even some bands have limited backstage and VIP privileges. A photo pass might only allow you to shoot certain stages, a wristband might get you bleacher seating or better food, but if you wanna be close during performances, you have to wait around like everyone else, and on the mainstage, you end up watching most of the performance on large screens.

Frightened Rabbit at the Casbah, circa 2008

4. "Epic" and "Killed It"- I might have to go a weekend without Twitter just so I don't have to read how every band "killed it" or was "epic". Shut up. Seriously. I can write a review about Coachella before it happens. "Friday and Saturday were filled with amazing performances by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, while Yeasayer and Frightened Rabbit became fan favorites, leading into epic performances by Them Crooked Vultures and LCD Soundsystem. The indie hipsters even embraced Jay-Z. What truly stole the weekend was the long awaited Pavement reunion, and Thom Yorke absolutely killed it with his side project, Atoms For Peace."

5. San Diego rocks- Do you realize how lucky we are in this town to have the venues we have? A band can tour and play 400-1000 capacity venues and end up playing the smallest show on their tours here in San Diego. As Tall As Lions performs tonight at the Loft. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are at the Belly Up and The Big Pink are at the Casbah on Thursday. Frightened Rabbit will be at the Casbah on May 22. In fact, a significant amount of bands set to play Coachella have played in San Diego over the past 6 months or will be here in the next few. If you like the crowds of a festival, celebrate Earth Day on Sunday in Balboa Park and spend the following weekend at the FREE Adams Avenue Roots Festival. Might not be the next hipster bands that you'll forget about next week, but great music nonetheless. Also, just because a lineup has 100 acts, realistically, how many will you actually see?
Vampire Weekend at the Casbah, circa 2007

In all seriousness, I'm sure Coachella will be "epic", but by next week everyone will be talking about something else. Hype and enthusiasm are great, but if you're really about great live music, missing Coachella won't break your heart. At least if you can get past the weekend of tweets.

Incidentally, moments after I posted this, it was announced that Coachella is Sold Out. For my friends that are going, have a great time. For those not, we'll hold down the fort and rage this weekend.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 12, 2010

Sometimes I feel like the craziness never stops. Though I won't be going to Coachella this year, this entire week you can be sure it's going to be talked about, written about, and bragged about by pretty much everyone who dropped the nearly $300 for a weekend pass or from the few who were able to get comp tickets. I'm on the other end of the spectrum, owing money on taxes for the first time since my first job when I was 15. Sucks. It's okay though, I see a lot of shows and while I haven't written about many of them lately, I uploaded some videos that you can check out on my YouTube page, including Nortec Collective's Bostich + Fussible, Low Volts (a solo project from Tim Lowman of The Blackout Party), Rocco Deluca, The Dead Trees, Adam Green, Busdriver, RJD2, Josh Damigo and more. You can see all 23 from the past couple weeks on my Youtube page, and I have plenty more to add.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros @ Belly Up Thursday April 15, 2010

After watching the ensemble known as Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros last fall, I felt this was a band reincarnated from the 60's. Dressed in tattered garb and mostly sans shoes, the band played a set of catchy songs from their full length Up From Below. Featuring as many as ten members, the group's performance is somewhat reminiscent of a religious revival.

Alex Ebert (there is no one named Edward Sharpe) is clearly the leader of this band, and he is certainly capitalizing on his new project. It is like he has been given a new lease on life. Anything is possible during their live show. In just a little more than two years, the band has risen to heights clearly beyond their expectations.

Leave any preconceived notions of what to expect (for first timers) and be glad that you will be one of the lucky patrons at their sold out return visit to Solana Beach this Thursday. It will no doubt be one of the the more unusual, yet warding live shows you will see this year.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Transfer @ Beauty Bar April 7, 2010

What are trends for if you can't buck them every once in a while. Even though this weekly addition has been relatively short lived, until now all recommendations have been for out of town touring bands/artists. There are always great shows happening around San Diego every week, some featuring touring artists from all points of the map. However, most of the live local music events offer the concert goers the chance to primarily see local artists in a variety of venues both large and small.
I noticed one of San Diego's favorite locals, Transfer, was headlining a show this Wednesday @ The Beauty Bar in City Heights. The venue is a great place to watch a show, due to its intimacy and the room technically being outdoors. (covered by a canvas canopy). This gives the patrons the option of hanging in the bar area or stepping "outside" into the show area. If you haven't had the opportunity to see Transfer, this is a band that is ready to break out of our cozy market at any time. Other projects aside , the members are at their best in this ensemble. Having recently returned from a successful trip to Austin for SXSW, shows are a mix of fan favorites as well as songs from their recently released effort, Future Selves. Their live set combines both intensity and what I view as a growing confidence that comes from touring and maturity. Don't miss this show, it will well be worth your time.

Scanners and The Lyon Crowns set the stage.
