There are some amazing shows this week. Like how did Snail Mail get booked on the same night as Lady Lamb? That is unfortunate. I won't be able to make either as I'm working for Jon Spencer and Quasi at the Casbah, a great show, too, but a much different type of show. 

I'll also be at Interpol on Friday, and if it gets out early enough, checking out Oberhofer at Soda Bar. Sadly, this means I can't make it to The Airborne Toxic Event with Mondo Cozmo opening. Hopefully he'll quickly schedule a small club headlining tour for the summer of fall because he is an amazing performer. 

The weekend is also packed with the San Diego Book Crawl, Adams Avenue Unplugged, Old Town Cinco De Mayo, a Tacos & Tequila festival at Petco Park, Art Alive in Balboa Park, and the classic ArtWalk in Little Italy. Darren will be working at the Safari Park all weekend, so I'll probably drag the kid around town before I have to work on Saturday night for Sleaford Mods at the Casbah. 

Speaking of, Nova turns 15 on Sunday and it is a very big deal around here but everyone is overscheduled so hopefully we can find a way to make her quinceañera special.

Family Festival Weekend

This weekend is one of my favorites in San Diego. Living in Kensington, there's always such a cool neighborhoody feeling about waking up and walking down Adams Avenue to check out the Roots Festival (and in September, the Adams Avenue Street Fair). Though I'm on about 4 hours sleep, I want to check out Blackout Party's early set, but before I get the walking shoes on, there are FOUR big events happening this weekend, all are family friendly, though I've learned in the past it's better to leave your pets at home, and they're all free. Get out and enjoy San Diego. Keep in mind all of the events are two day events except for Chicano Park Day, which is Saturday only. Make sure to check out the music schedules. Roots Fest has big acts this year like Glen Phillips, Sara Watkins, John Doe, The Watson Twins and more. Don't miss em.

Sunday Recap (pt.1): ArtWalk & The Ex-Friends

Sunday was family day for me as I headed to ArtWalk with my mom, sisters, and brother in law. After getting some food at Mona Lisa, we walked the festival a little, most taking in the outdoor art exhibitors and people watching. Eventually I made my way to the little fountain/amphitheater area where Matt Curreri and the Ex-Friends were gonna play. The gloom burned off and the sun was out and I met up with Andrea and we bumped into Adam, Trisha, Dylan, and Laura Jane. It was cool, too, because Kevin of the Ex-Friends is a teacher so a bunch of his students were there.

The band had enough material to cover all of their hour and fifteen minute set and a lot of festival goers came and went throughout their set.





One elderly man in the crowd kept yelling for them to "keep going", even in between songs, also shouting out various songs by Zeppelin among others, like "'Gateway' to Heaven". I freaking love festival people.





Of course, the heckling pales to the freak with missing teeth walking around with a "free hugs" sign, but it was worth mentioning. ArtWalk seemed better planned this year, though admittedly I avoided confined art spaces. The Little Italy improvements, like the fountains and benches, really do a lot to make the event more pedestrian friendly. After a few hours it was time to go on our merry ways and I prepped myself for a Sunday evening concert.
