Who Knew? Old Navy Sweater Song is H.O.T.

Friday this site netted (is that a word?) 708 hits, and more than half were searches for "Old Navy Sweater Song"...I'm hoping that post cumulatively surpasses my "Band Of Horses Hates Me" post. That shit is so tired.

Thanks to everyone who came out for my birthday last night and tonight. I hope everyone takes the time to check out the Adams Avenue Street Fair this weekend. It will not disappoint.

Cheers to my neighbor, Mr. Jerry Sanders

So at my pre-bday celebration with friends, we got on the topic of local politics, and it occurred to me that not enough people saw this video of Mr. Jerry Sanders, my Kensington neighbor, breaking down as he approved a resolution that was sent to the state supreme court in support of gay marriage. I tend to find myself in opposition to my neighbor many a time, but in this case, he made me proud to be a San Diegan.

Thursday Recap: The National @ The Casbah

So it's my birthday, officially, as I type this, but last night I had pre-birthday evening at the Wine Cabana, home of a heavy pour and owned by my good friend Keith. If you are a fan of wine, I highly recommend checking out the Wine Cabana in Old Town. I was fortunate enough to park my car and grab a ride to the Casbah and then a ride back home. So I guess I'll spend my Friday taking the bus to my coche. Anyway, I'm sorry for the flash of my bra in these pics, but I really clearly have no shame. Whatevs...it was great to be with friends.

After Wine Cabana, it was time to head to the Casbah. I'm a little bummed we missed St. Vincent, but we arrived in plenty of time to post up before The National started. I had plenty of friends up front who let me move on up, and no disrespect to anyone else who was up there, but I was rearing to go and snap the following shots. I've loved The National's music all summer, since they canceled the show earlier this summer, so I was glad I was here despite the fact that I had a ticket for Girl Talk at Epicentre and there was another Casbah hosted show by !!! at Cane's. It's always interesting to me to hear a man with a huge voice like The National without ever seeing the dude's face and imagining what the man behind such a voice looks like. Padge let me scoot up front and here are the pics of the evening.

So yeah, I've had a digital camera for 9 months and it wasn't until Tim Pyles showed me how to set my shit on black and white that I started going nutso. I love it. The National was amazing as I'd read in various places that they would be, but in the limited capacity Casbah, they were seriously beyond anything I could have wanted or expected. For me, I'd have to say they were my show of the year thus far. So good, so strong, so *i-don't-know-hitting-me- in-the-gut-shit* that I've experienced all year. And on top of all of it, my birthday struck at midnight and I was happy to be amongst friends when it happened. And while it was a great night, I'm happy that there's a whole weekend of 'radness' ahead of me, starting with an early dinner with my family at my favorite spot, Ponce's.

Yay. Maybe being 31 and single and unemployed ain't as shitty as one might think. Life is really good at this moment.

Are You Kidding With This?: Coronado Navy Barracks Built In The Shape of a Swastika

I know I'm deviating from music news here, but this is for anyone who doesn't regularly watch the news or read local news. There are Navy barracks at North Island that were built in the shape of a swastika.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Or to be more exact, the barracks are built in the shape of two planes flying into the swastika.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The government has authorized $600k to superficially change the buildings, with awnings or expansions or something that will change the barracks so that their view from the sky, namely google earth, isn't a swastika. The joke thing about this? The barracks have been there for FORTY YEARS. Who approved those freakin blueprints? I think it's shameful and disgusting myself and can't believe it took 40 years for someone to notice.

Old Navy Sweater Song

I'm not against bands selling their songs for music licensing in various forms, though I guess I hope (or trick myself into believing) that music I like ends up representing certain companies who are (or appear to be) more socially responsible or at least not representing uber evil like Hummer (or Walmart, ahem) or some shit. Feist's 1-2-3-4 on the iPod commercial, for example, is cute. So there's a commercial that has been coming on and I had to investigate because the song makes me look forward to those December nights in San Diego, where the air is crisp, Adams Avenue is hardly visible from the fog rolling in, sitting in my living room with friends around my Christmas tree and perhaps a white russian. So, Old Navy's marketing is at least working on me, and I suppose I'm smack dab in the middle of their target demographic.

The song goes (at least the part in the commercial) says, "if you are chilly, here take my sweater cause I love the way you call me baby...) then the commercial fades.

The song is called "The Way I Am" and is by New York singer songwriter Ingrid Michaelson. She is on tour, but unfortunately will not be playing in San Diego. fyi.

Here's the song being performed on Carson Daly (note the absence of an old navy sweater):

by the way, Zach Braff recommends Ingrid for whatever that means...

Girl Talk Ticket For Sale $15

I bought a ticket to the Girl Talk show at Epicentre tomorrow night but have made other plans. Contact me if you're interested and can pick it up tomorrow. $15 flat.

Me + CityBeat

This week is my first "Notes From the Smoking Patio" in CityBeat.
I'd appreciate comments and suggestions, and if you've got local music news and want some ink, send your info my way.

Also, here's some crosslink love from Troy. Just a note, though...I've only been on this earth for 30 years and 363 days. Troy's making me more aged than I am.

Also, check out Cullen's "If I Were U" premiere this week.

Tuesday Recap: Ra Ra Riot & Modernstate at The Casbah

With the fear of getting sucked into shitty fall tv previews, I decided I needed to head out on Tuesday night. I was fortunate enough to catch modernstate a few months back when they played at Scolari's and I was impressed so I headed to the Casbah in hopes of catching them again. Though I arrived a little later than I'd hoped, I still had plenty of time to go because apparently, because of some miscommunication between bands and their booking agent, two of the bands listed on the bill (Kennedy & The Vacation) didn't show up. It was unfortunate because modernstate had already set up in the Atari Lounge and could've been on the main stage. No problem for Sam and Jesse, however, because their sound and equipment is very self contained. By the way, I keep saying "they" but Modernstate is the project of Sam and his recordings are his alone; Jesse just plays with him live on occasion and has his own solo project called gulls. Jesse will be with modernstate tonight in Tucson, but then Sam heads out on his own across the country.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Modernstate impressed once again. The music is experimental with lyrics that are at times political and other times philosophical (and at times, both) and the trumpet, guitar, keys and drums are played live and then amazingly looped to make it sound like there's a larger band making the accompanying sounds.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Unfortunately, I was beard shy once again, so I didn't take very good pictures while they played, but talking to the guys after, they let me take a pic of them and turned out to be really great guys. I know I need to get over the beard=band of horses=bastard association, but I guess I'm still a bit scarred.

After modernstate, Ra Ra Riot hit the mainstage. I never thought I would say I'd rather see a band at the Beauty Bar instead of the Casbah, but if Ra Ra Riot comes through town again, that is where they should play (and I told them so after the show). They have this great indie rock sound complete with electronic violin and electronic cello, occasional keys with the standard guitars and bass, but the guitar and drummer keep a very New Order dancey pop beat throughout.

The band is a 6 piece from Syracuse, New York and the crowd was thin, but I know I don't speak for myself by saying they were great. This was the band's first time to San Diego and they finished their tour here before they head to Europe for an opening spot with the Editors. They've also toured with Tokyo Police Club. The band looks relatively young, but they are all skilled musicians and seem to have already been through a lot as a band, including the tragic loss of their drummer this summer.

The band seemed a little crowded on the stage because they're all so high energy and they bounce all over the stage, and at times, into one another. "We're not usually like this," Wes told the crowd, "but it's the last night of our tour." They busted through their set and just as quick, their set was over. The band has 4 days to get back to Syracuse. "We're stocked on RedBull and we're gonna drive non stop for two days." Crazy, crazy kids.

It seemed like the bands liked San Diego and hopefully keep us in mind next tour around, when surely their buzz will be guarantee a larger audience.

After the bands finished and after the Casbah scooted everyone out, it was still pretty early. The modernstate guys were staying with a friend near Scolari's, so I suggested checking out the Pink Elephant. As I was leaving the Casbah, I saw they were jumping the engine of Ra Ra Riot's van, so hopefully those guys got on the road safely and don't encounter any problems in their marathon drive across the country. They showed up at the Pink Elephant shortly after me and it was fun hanging out to close out the night. The pink elephant parade came on and signaled the end of the night so we said our goodbyes and I was on my way to reflect on another great evening in San Diego.

My Birthday Festivities

Since this is my easiest way to contact my friends, I'm letting everyone know that while I loved having a big 30th blowout last year, this year I'm kinda 'eh' about my birthday. So in place of a party here are some ways you can come celebrate my 31st birthday with me:

Thursday Night: Wine Cabana In Old Town. 7:30 pm. Every month, Wine Cabana has a night celebrating that month's birthdays, so anyone born in September gets a free glass of champagne and all their friends get to come and enjoy some of the free appetizers and at 9 pm they have cake. Simple, mellow, but if you can make it, let me know. If there are too many of us, I'd like to reserve a cabana. 2539 Congress Street, Old Town. Around the corner from Rockin Baja Lobster. Walking distance to the trolley. Come before the National at the Casbah.

Friday Night (my actual birthday): Bar Pink Elephant. That's where I'll be if you wanna come by and say hello.

Saturday Night: Adams Avenue Street Fair. I'll be walking to the street fair from Kensington if anyone would like to pre-meet at my house in Kensington and walk over. I plan on leaving my house around noon.

Please don't think you need a personal invitation...if you know me "irl" then I'd love to see friendly faces out at some point this weekend. I just got on the ball late and with the new neighbors, a party is just really not feasible.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 25, 2007

Tuesday, September 25, 2007:
  • Ra Ra Riot , Kennedy, The Vacation, modernstate @ Casbah
  • Del the Funky Homosapien w/ Devin the Dude, Bukue One, Serendipity Project, DJ Gar Gar and Knowbody @ Belly Up
  • Terence Blanchard @ Anthology
  • The Birthday Massacre, The Start @ House of Blues
  • Soul Ablaze, Ded Pigeons, New Dayze, Ecosave @ Winston’s
  • Powerload (AC/DC Cover Band) @ House of Blues Side Stage
  • Fishnet Stalkers, Just Like Jenna @ O’Connell’s

Friday Pictures: Cullen's 30th Birthday- Planse Mistaken For Stars, Kingdom of Magic, Get Your Death On @ Tower Bar

I wanted to get my Street Scene pictures up because they were in demand, but I would be remiss if I didn't write about how great Friday night was, too. It was Cullen Hendrix's 30th birthday. The night started out at his home with a spread of apps, beer and wine, and a gathering of his friends. Then we all headed to the Tower Bar for the melt your face off rock of Planes Mistaken For Stars, Kingdom Of Magic, and Get Your Death On.

My pictures are actually in reverse order of the night but I'm lacking the patience to put them in chronological order, but you can get the general feel for the night from all of them. It was a great time and it was so nice of Cullen to do a ticket buyout for his party revelers. And as it goes at the Tower, the cheap drinks were flowing and even for the huge crowd, there was never any crazy wait to get served. Man, I love that place.

I really have nothing to say about the bands that the pictures don't already say for themselves. There was a funny moment in the early part of the night where the bar wanted Cullen to make sure the bands knew that they couldn't play too loud. Ha. What does that even mean for bands like this in a venue like this? Well, not much, but I was glad to have my earplugs or my ears would've bled. It was loud, it was heavy, it was mind blowing. The energy was huge both from the bands and from the crowd.

It made me glad that the rain came in the morning so I could stall and get to Street Scene at a more leisurely time than I'd planned. Huge thanks to Cullen and Sarah for opening your home and for being awesome hosts; couldn't have asked for a better way to roll into the weekend.

Eric Joseph Shooter: Caught!

Because of massive efforts through MySpace bulletins, blogs, newspapers and video captured from a street camera, the man who shot bartender Eric Joseph in Pacific Beach last week has been arrested. He will be charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in addition to a probation violation.

For a rewind on the story:

San Diego Police Department Northern Division detectives are asking for assistance from the public in identifying a suspect in a shooting that happened in the early morning hours of Monday, September 17, 2007.

At about 2 a.m. the male victim was walking south on Mission Boulevard when he and his companions saw a fight in front of Ramiro's Taco shop, located at 4525 Mission Boulevard. Some members of the victim's group helped break up the fight. The victim and his companions continued walking east on Garnet Avenue where they were confronted by the suspect in the 900 block of Garnet. The suspect yelled, "Who pushed me?" pointed a gun at the victim and fired three shots. The suspect fled on foot going west on Garnet Avenue.
The suspect was identified as 24 year old David Park.

A benefit to assist Eric Joseph with medical bills and lost wages will be held on October 3 at Stingaree. Donations of spa packages, tickets, autographed memorabilia, and other items that can be raffled and/or auctioned are requested. To provide donations, contact Angela at partying for a purpose. Street Scene 2007 Recap & Photos Day 2

By the time my ride arrived to pick me up on Sunday, I'd already missed some of the bands I'd hope to catch. I was also pretty bummed that I chose to wear shoes that ended up giving me blisters on both of my feet within the first hour of being at Street Scene. My friends and I headed to the 5 stage to catch People Under The Stairs for a while.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
We were kinda unsure what kind of access we'd have for Sunday, but my friend Pete had arrived and told me he got me passes with Z-Trip so I headed back toward the entrance and caught a glimpse of Brett Dennen.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I went out of the venue only to find the tickets were en route. I ran into Steve from Dynamite Walls and Chris from Augustana, so we hung out at the will call until our passes arrived. At that point Natalie sent me a text that we had photo passes for The Album Leaf. After waiting about a half hour, the passes arrived and we entered through the artist entrance.

After hanging in the artist area for a while, Natalie and I mosied to the Album Leaf stage.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
The sound on their stage was perfectly crisp though I didn't want to clutter up the photo pit for too long so I watched from a ways back for the majority of their set. I wanted to catch Paolo Nutini, so I headed back to the main stage to catch a few of his songs as well. "These Streets" sounded so amazing on that huge stage.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I had separated from Kristian so I met he and the rest of our friends in the electronica tent for Simian Mobile Disco. They were great, but it was a dj set so I didn't hang for long. At this point the moleskin the first aid guys gave me for my blisters had gotten dusty from the tent and I had forgotten my earplugs, so I took a couple pics but then was on my way.

Sexy and single...Kristian, Dave and Chris

In the tent I ran into the most famous bald head in San Diego, Mr. Tim Pyles.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I was running all over the place for most of the day. From the electronica tent, I went to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah for a few songs but this was my roughest point of the day...lack of earplugs, not enough sleep, blisters on my feet and I didn't hang at the stage for long.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I also had to catch Z-Trip for part of his set. It was familiar and felt like the same set he did at SoCo, but I knew he had a long set (an hour and a half) so I left to catch Spoon.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Britt and crew sounded awesome. I guess I've now seen them equally on small and large stages and I like both equally. I appreciate that the band is flexible and can pull off both quite well.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I then ran to see a couple songs by the Sweet and Tender Hooligans and I seriously think there are so many diehard fans of Morrissey and The Smiths, that I wouldn't doubt if the couple hundred people were at Street Scene only to see the Sweet and Tender Hooligans who really do the covers spot on.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Since Pete got me my passes, however, I had to make sure I arrived back at the electronic stage to catch his portion of the Z-Trip set. He blew it up yet again. The guy is amazing. I've mentioned before he's drumming for Z-Trip at the moment, but has also has played with Cake and Mike Doughty in the past. He blows me away everytime I see him.

After that, back to the artist tent for some tequila shots, a couple beers and a burrito before heading to catch Louis XIV on the main stage. Anya Marina came out to sing during "Finding Out True Love Is Blind" and Ray Suen has been playing violin with the band. He's definitely upping his demand by bands because he's absolutely amazing.

I spent the remainder of the night in the artist area. It was really fun back there, complete with a foosball table and an air hockey table, couches, and tv's to watch the acts.

Natalie and I had our geek out superfan moment backstage when we got the balls to approach Britt Daniels and get him to pose for some pics with us. He was really nice and didn't seem to mind us gushing like little schoolgirls.

MC Flow & Crew

The one person I really wanted to meet was Joe Escalante of the Sweet & Tender Hooligans, The Vandals, and The Last of the Famous International Morning Show on Indie 103.1, but apparently he left as soon as their set ended because he has to get up early for his morning show. Bummer. I did talk to Jose for a while and he was really, really nice.

All in all it was another amazing day at Street Scene. I am glad I took a chance and kept the faith about the event, and I know that no matter what form it takes next year, if it continues, I will be there. I hear the numbers didn't meet the expectations of LiveNation, but I enjoyed the space, the layout worked well, and the music was great. I guess the lawn stage suffered a bit from the Editors sound checking early which was lame, but as far as I could tell, the event went off without a hitch minus the usual complaints about charging for parking (when there is no alternative) and overpriced beer, but whatever. Those are pretty standard complaints about most shows.

I'm taking a night off from rock n roll and I'll try to get my things to do list up soon. Huge thanks to Dynamite Walls, Jason Burkhart, Conrado, Jake, The Album Leaf, Pete McNeal, Z-Trip, Kristian, Dave and especially to Chris for being my designated driver, and everyone else who was instrumental in making this an amazing weekend.
