New Years Eve with the Creepy Creeps 12.31.2019

It's been awhile since I've really posted anything about music. Obviously, part of the reason is that music has shut down, so it's a little painful to think too much about it, but also I had been so busy writing for SoundDiego and still doing newsletters and socials for the Casbah that I kinda let the pandemic take over my site. And no offense to readers, I appreciate all the support, but though I may seem quite angry or stressed out, I've found the exercise of watching the daily briefings and aggregating important articles to be quite therapeutic for me. If I can write it down, I can release if from my mind and be free of the worry. So anyway, there are a lot of things happening in the music world, and there are plenty of ways to follow all of the livestreams and free things that are coming out....Consequence of Sound, Bands In Town, Paste, KCRW, NPR, Noisey and many many others are keeping running lists, so you can find all of that on your own, but I'm just sharing a few nuggets below. San Diego Music Awards 2019: Winners

I had the pleasure of attending the 2019 San Diego Music Awards on Monday night. I also had the pleasure of live-tweeting the whole thing for SoundDiego, which in retrospect, maybe I should've done as a thread? At any rate, I didn't have a chance to post much of anything yesterday, but I promised I'd share this year's winners.

You can also find the list at the official site, but I decided to post them in the order they were announced instead. When you look at it from this perspective, it makes it interesting, because while many of the performers found themselves winning the award announced immediately after their performances, it wasn't the case with everyone. So, for example, Veronica May and Casey Hensley both performed and won their categories, but the rest of the performers did not--but they're still winners in our book!!

I didn't get to schmooze nearly as much as I would've liked as I was confined to my Chromebook the whole night, but the performances were pretty great, starting with Ariel Levine and closing with Planet B, and Veronica May, Shane Hall, Casey Hensley, Vokab Company, and the Redwoods Revue all getting stage time. Of course, the event sold out with the promise of a Jason Mraz performance, which was actually some Java Joe All-Stars who wrote a special tribute to Jave Joe Flammini, with lots of allusions to smoking weed in the parking lot behind Java Joe's and the years the venue was a staple in its various locations. It was definitely a fun night and the after party at the Casbah was raging, too, but this old lady was tuckered and had to call it an early night. Rob Machado Foundation Benefit Concert Preview

Well known San Diego County resident Rob Machado is one busy guy. When not surfing he keeps himself immersed in his foundation, the primary goal being that of helping youth becoming more aware of their role in maintaining a healthy planet. The RMF has many programs, such as healthy food lunches, school greening, environmentally safe recycle bins, and water refill stations at schools. The immediate and long lasting effect of these initiatives can be seen here locally (ten recycling bins were installed at Cardiff beaches in August).

Next Monday (November 11), the 2nd Annual RMF Benefit Concert is taking place in Rob's back yard, so to speak. The Belly Up Tavern is hosting the event, with performances by several world class musicians and other local talent. Topping the list is Jason Mraz, along with John Rzeznik from The Goo Goo Dolls, Run River North and Austin Burns. These artists will be performing acoustic sets to a sold out crowd.

This is certainly going to be a special evening with the proceeds benefiting some great causes. Those wishing to donate to the Rob Machado Foundation click here.

Jason Mraz at Sunset Sessions 2012

I have a bunch of videos and photos to share with you from the weekend, but thought I'd start off by sharing the videos of Jason Mraz's appearance at Sunset Sessions 2012. To be completely honest, I hadn't seen Jason perform since Java Joe's a bazillion years ago and I still think that "You And I Both" is the best song he's ever written, but there's a really sappy unicorns-and-rainbows girl inside of me that thinks that "I Won't Give Up" might just knock that to the second best and I imagine it will be the song for many weddings to come. He performed four songs- "I Won't Give Up", "I'm Yours", "The Woman I Love" and "You Fuckin' Did It", though there were a lot of kids around so he cleaned it up.

Local Musicians Tristan Prettyman & Jason Mraz Affianced

Last week, there was a sold out Feeding The Soul Foundation benefit at the Neurosciences Institute feat. Bushwalla, Tristan Prettyman "and surprises", according to the press release. Naturally, anyone who is paying attention to the scene here would assume this meant an appearance by Jason Mraz because he's dated Tristan and is buddies with Bushwalla and they've traded appearances on their recordings many times over the years. As expected, he performed but the bigger news is that a few days later, Mraz announced his engagement to Tristan Prettyman via Twitter with a simple statement, "SHE SAID YES." Similarly, she tweeted "For Once, I am speechless" and later "i did good! holy crap! man of my dreams!!! for the rest of my life!!!" Following their tweets, the couple are camping for the holidays. Jason Mraz to Perform at "Cord Progression"

Sadly, I know too many people with spinal cord injuries and the subject has always been close to me personally. This came from the Jason Mraz fan club (though I've edited it slightly to remove 86 exclamation points):

We are excited to announce Cord Progression, a special night of music in support of Jesse Billauer’s motivational speaking tour, Life Rolls On and Spinal Cord Injury Awareness.

This exciting evening will take place at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre on Saturday, February 27th, 2010 and features a special acoustic performance by Jason Mraz. Good friends Timmy Curran (with full band), The Makepeace Brothers, and Bushwalla will also perform with more performers to be announced.

Pre-sale begins Wed. Jan 20th at AM PST via Ticketmaster and ends Friday, January 22nd, 2010 at 10pm PST. The password is "LIFE." Regular tickets go on sale this Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 at 10am via ticketmaster.

This event is paperless (and anti-scalping). Ticket holders will go directly to the door at the venue, present a valid photo ID, and swipe the credit card used to purchase tickets for entry. It's fast, easy and good for the environment. The entire party must enter the venue at the same time since tickets are non-transferable.

Hey everyone, as promised here are the details regarding Jason's San Diego concert! The show takes place October 11th at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater, starting at 6pm with Brett Dennen as special guest and Bushwalla hosting.

"This free show is our way of saying 'thank you' to all our friends in San Diego and Southern California for their incredible support over the past 10 years. We will present the opportunity for San Diego to have a great night of music and sing-alongs with us, and to invite our friends and families and community to join us in supporting some great work being done by charities like Surfrider Foundation, VH1 Save the Music and San Diego Youth Services." -jason

Reserved seats will be available for $1, while lawn seats will be FREE, with NO additional service charges. The reserved seats will be sold utilizing Ticketmaster's new paperless ticketing method to discourage resale of tickets. The paperless ticketing requires that the credit card used in the transaction also be presented at the gates for admission to the show. There is a limit of 4 tickets per person. Tickets (both free and for purchase) will be available this Saturday, September 26, at 10am PST through LiveNation.com and Ticketmaster.com, and will be available online only.

There will be a limited number of VIP seats at the front of the reserved section to defray the costs of the show and to maximize proceeds to the charity recipients. The VIP seats will be $75 plus service charges and offer best locations only.

In addition, 30 of the best pairs of tickets in the seated pit will be auctioned, and these 30 packages (only) will include a special after show meet and greet with Jason. All auction proceeds will go towards The Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans.

Likewise, in the spirit of being green, carpools of three or more people will park for free. Cars containing less than three people will be charged a parking fee.

On-site at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater on the night of the show, Jason will be inviting all the fans in attendance to learn about ways that they can contribute to the work of the non-profit groups, including by way of donations.

"This has become a 'pay what you like' show in reality. We'll give the show up to the fans for free, and ask them to drop in at the charity tables and give the non-profits the money that they think the show is worth. With no obligation to do so, of course, just a suggestion."

Other benefiting charities will include the following:
San Diego Youth Services- an organization that has worked to stabilize the lives of over 500,000 homeless, runaway, and abused and at-risk youth in the San Diego area.
VH1 Save The Music- a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in American public schools.

Free Show Announced in San Diego!

Jason Mraz To Play San Diego "Fan Appreciation" Show

Jason Mraz Breaks Billboard Hot 100 Record

I'm gonna admit right now that I was a Java Joe's groupie way back when. If Steve Poltz or Blacksmith Union or Gregory Page were playing, I was there. Then they moved around the corner and I kinda quit my habit. Fortunately I still made it there from time to time including two or three times seeing Jason Mraz before the labels came knocking and the boy was gone...I'm posting the following press release in it's entirety because I couldn't be happier that Jason has found success in the music business. I only wish the same for other San Diego troubadours...I'll refrain from any snarky comments about the tour not including a San Diego date...also, a video of my favorite Mraz song that still makes me weepy.

Mraz has also announced the upcoming release of an all-new live CD/DVD, “JASON MRAZ’S BEAUTIFUL MESS – LIVE FROM EARTH.” Due in stores and at all online retailers on November 10th, the album and DVD were recorded just last week as Jason’s blockbuster “Gratitude Café Tour” hit Chicago’s Charter One Pavilion. The first leg of the acclaimed “Gratitude Café Tour” is set to wrap up later this month at the Ironstone Amphitheatre in Murphys, California (see attached itinerary). Now in its third year, We Day sets the stage for an exclusive year-long program for students throughout North America to create global change through Free The Children’s Adopt a Village program. Other speakers/entertainers participating in the event include His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Mia Farrow.

In other news, Mraz and beach culture brand Hurley have created a limited-edition collection of environmentally friendly men’s and women’s t-shirts. Jason Mraz To Play Hollywood Bowl

Java Joe's alum Jason Mraz will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl this fall. It will be Jason's only Southern California performance, not to mention shows at the Hollywood Bowl are nothing short of amazing (and not only because you can BYOB). The show is on Saturday, October 10, but tickets will be available starting Saturday at noon via Ticketmaster (or presale now with your Citi card). Brett Dennen and G. Love and Special Sauce will be opening.

Jason Mraz to play House of Blues

Scott Russo, of Unwritten Law, lost his home to a fire this week. The home had no fire insurance and it was a total loss. To support Scott and his family, a benefit show will take place on Tuesday at House of Blues featuring Jason Mraz, Unwritten Law, and a special guest. Tickets go on sale Monday at noon via Ticketmaster.com, HoB.com, or LiveNation.com. Tickets will cost $50-$75 plus a billion dollars in service charges.

"My entire family is now homeless, all our pets are dead and all our earthly possessions are gone. Not much news, but here's what I've got for today:

"Local" boy Jason Mraz has written a song called "The Beauty In Ugly" for the ABC show Ugly Betty and their "Be Ugly '07" campaign. You can listen to it here.

Local band Two Word Name played in Los Angeles on Thursday night. You might remember me posting their sale of tickets for the party bus for $35 to head to LA. In talking with some people this weekend, the trip worked out well for the band who had over 100 people show up to see them...but not without incident. The band was not on the bus which bummed some people out and there were allegedly underage kids on the bus partaking in the alcohol festivities. The bus got lost and had to call the band for directions and then the band was threatened by the club because there is a city ordinance that party busses and bus tours are not allowed on the Sunset Strip. Still, the band made a good showing and had a blast at their show. Also allegedly, the bus trip home had some wild stuff. I will neither confirm nor deny that I heard stories of 16 year old girls making out with 28 year old guys.

Congratulations to Greg Laswell are in order. His cover of the Cindy Lauper song "Girls Wanna Have Fun" is number 1 on iTunes folk charts for 10 days running. Nice. Mock Mtv all you want but if you get song placement on one of their shows it can really only be good. I mean unless you're too cool and don't really want to make money playing music.

A friend of mine went to the Fono/Swandive show at the Beauty Bar on Saturday Night. I like both bands myself, and I don't know if this comment reflected the bands or the bar, but he said, "The Beauty Bar is Dead". I've been interested in seeing the evolution as night after promoted night have left to other bars, i.e. Poprocks turning into the Anti Monday League at the Casbah and Pussy Galore moving to San Diego Sports Club. We shall see.
