Casbah presents Julien Baker at the Observatory North Park!

Casbah presents Julien Baker
with special guests DEHD & Katie Malco
Observatory North Park
November 2  All Ages  7pm
Tickets on sale Friday, April 9 at 10am

It's been a hot minute since I've had any good music news around here, which is why it makes me so excited to share that Julien Baker will be performing at the Observatory North Park. The show is set to take place on November 2, 2021 and will be an all ages show.

Julien's 2021 release, Little Oblivions, has been getting some serious repetitive plays in our speakeasy and the opportunity to hear it live is enough reason for all of us to get vaccinated and get our collective shit together to squash this pandemic, so we can all be in the same room at the same time listening to this amazing performer live. I've had the pleasure of working at both of her sold out shows at The Irenic (R.I.P. venue) as well as catching her show with Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers at the Observatory as one third of Boygenius and she is an absolutely stunning live performer who can captivate an audience into dead silent admiration. Little Oblivions is getting all the worthy praises and this show is certain to sell out. Make sure you've got your Ticketmaster login all set up with your credit card when the show goes on sale this Friday at 10am.

Meanwhile, don't expect shows at the Casbah in the immediate future regardless of the new orange tier and the ability to host live music to vaccinated people at a really small capacity, but don't forget the bar is opening Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 6-10pm to serve cocktails, tacos from Salud, and live DJs in the house. It will all be outside on the patio and Razzmatazz Room. COVID-19 safety protocols require a mask for all guest to be worn at all times except when seated and actively eating or drinking. Consider it a test drive and be on your best behavior so they can continue and expand to longer hours and more days in the future.

CoViD-19: I'm Pissed | Chicano Elefante In The Room | LiveNation Plans Post-Pandemic | Tourist Attractions Lay Out Future Protocol | RIP Raina | Unequal Access To Nature

I've been enjoying my daily visits from this Mourning Cloak, bringing joy and beauty every day.

You know what? I'm pissed. All of us are going through this time in our own way, some have it much worse than others and our feelings can run the whole gamut of grief and loss and sadness and confusion, but today my mom called me while she's out shopping because she 'needed to get out of the house'. WTF?!? All of this push to reopen is communicating to people that things are safe. And she lives in 91911, a ZIP code with one of the highest counts, and it feels like the majority of people are refusing to wear facial coverings. Numbers are not in control. People are still dying in crazy numbers. The infection rate is still climbing.
So yeah, I'm pissed. More after the jump.

91X Presents Sun Fiesta at Petco Park at the Park on August 2nd

In all my commitment to be downtown for the Wonderfront announcement on Monday, I completely forgot to post about 91X's exciting announcement (though, let's be honest, this would be a really great stage at Wonderfront) about Sun Fiesta, taking place on Friday, August 2nd at Petco's Park at The Park. Side funny, if you look up Park at the Park on the Petco Park website, it explains that "The Park at the Park is a park in the Park."  That is some special marketing right there.

Anyway, I love The Head and The Heart so you better believe I'm putting this one on my calendar. Tickets go on sale Friday. For all your info and ticketing, check out the event site here. Also, The Head and The Heart posted the presale password is FIESTA, so you don't have to wait until Friday to get tickets. GA tickets come in around $40, with a base price of $29.99 and about $11 in fees, per ticket.

Billie Eilish Returns! SOLD OUT!

Billie Eilish is returning to San Diego on July 13 to Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at San Diego State. Tickets are already in presale but go on sale to the general public on Friday at 12pm. I'm posting mostly because I haven't seen so many young girls crying outside a show because they (a) didn't have tickets or (b) bought fake tickets. This show will sell out. Likely in minutes. Make sure your account is all set up on Ticketmaster so you can one-touch purchase if necessary. This is a co-presented show by Casbah, Belly Up, and Livenation, but if you don't get tickets, I CANNOT HELP YOU. There are no comps to be given. Don't say you didn't know. Now you know.

Save this link to buy your tickets and good luck. Don't buy resale tickets!

UPDATE: THIS SHOW IS OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT. 2/8/2019 4PM.

Photos: Chvrches & Lo Moon at CCCU OAT, SDSU. 9.20.2018

Of course, I was head over heels when I'd originally heard that Chvrches was returning to San Diego, but the excitement was bubbling over on Thursday, the day of show, when I found out that not only was my photo pass secured, but we'd also be able to attend the 91X X-Session at Phaser Control Studios. We felt that seeing an international artist in such an intimate setting warranted pulling Nova out of school in the afternoon and headed to the studio. I was specifically called out by name not to take photos, so I obeyed, but I'm kinda bummed after the fact because one, everyone else was doing it, and two, our picture with the band has the lighting of a 1970's shrink's office because there were these stage LED lights on in the background.

Still, it was an amazing privilege, so thanks to 91X for letting us in on the fun.

Afterward, we came home and got all of our work and homework done and then Nova and I went to the show at the OAT. Fortunately, another photog had an extra ticket, so after Darren's soccer game, he was able to join us and only missed the first couple Chvrches songs, though he did miss the moment a massive giant cockroach climbed up the seat next to mine and over the armrest to take a swim in my nacho cheese. The venue kindly replaced them for me, but there's nothing on this earth Nova hates more than roaches so we had quite the freakout.  The show itself was amazing and we had amazing seats and it was nothing but joy. If you've seen Chvrches live, you know that they put on an incredible show, and if you haven't had the chance, don't miss them next time they come around. I tried to trim down the number of photos, but they're such a joy to shoot, I couldn't resist. Check them out after the jump.

ATTN: Kaleo Venue Change (From HOB to OAT)

I'm posting this because it's pretty unusual for a such a big venue change for any show, but to go from House of blues to Open Air Theatre is a huge leap... if you have tickets to the original show, you should exchange them sooner rather than later to get the best seats being traded.

(text from press release)
Touring in support of their critically acclaimed third album Modern Vampires Of The City, Vampire Weekend have added several more dates to their fall run. San Diego show added on September 30th at SDSU’s Open Air Theater – tickets on sale Friday, June 28 at 10am

Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires Of The City's critical acclaim has been matched by its reception with the public: it entered the U.S. album chart at #1, and has gone on to sell nearly 250,000 copies in the month since its May 14 release on XL Recordings.

This is the second time Vampire Weekend has achieved such a landmark: Its sophomore album Contra also debuted at #1 in 2010, making Modern Vampires... the first time an independent rock band has entered at #1 with two consecutive releases.

Review: 10.28.2010 Viejas Arena: Gorillaz with N.E.R.D. (No One Ever Really Dies)

(ed. note: You all know and love Tim Pyles, and while he has his own site getting sorted out, he volunteered to write about the Gorillaz show for sddialedin.com We actually have a bet. I was sure that Gorillaz played 4th & B in 2002 but Pyles seems to think I'm making it up. )

Gorillaz visited San Diego for the first time recently and as a frequent concertgoer this show blew any and all away! Not only is the band fronted by Damon Albarn (Blur), the touring band now features two members of The Clash; Mick Jones and Paul Simonon. Plus, you add in guest appearances from De La Soul, Little Dragon, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Rosie Wilson, Bobby Womack, Bootie Brown, Bashy and Kano, well magic ensues. Los Angeles had the privilege of seeing Lou Reed join with them the night before, but that's not San Diego. You could even say Snoop Dogg and Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays were on stage, but it was the huge screen behind the actual band.

I was so very excited about this show, having seen the band in LA back in 2002 on the first tour. During that first tour the band performed behind two screens that had projected visuals and animations, you only saw shadows of the actual players. The band has done limited touring since 2002, a few dates in 2006 (NYC & Manchester, UK) and now this HUGE World Tour in 2010. The band played the latest Coachella, as well. If you saw this show, feel lucky cause it was rare.

The show kicked off with Snoop Dogg on the big screen and just took off from that point on. Each song featured a different guest for the most part, with Damon Albarn as the ring leader. Both Mick Jones and Paul Simonon exuded The Clash cool on stage! It felt more like a show, a production than say a concert where the band plugs in and plays. This was awesome, but never seemed technical or lacking soul.

N.E.R.D. opened to a small house with people arriving slowly, but never let on with Pharrel giving it his all. I'm a fan of both artists and felt it was a dream match-up for a show. The both fall into this neo-Hip Hop thing, but rock too. I always see and hear lot's of colors...

Here's the setlist for Gorillaz:

Orchestral Intro
Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach
Last Living Souls (with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
19/2000 (with Rosie Wilson)
Stylo (with Bobby Womack)
On Melancholy Hill
Rhinestone Eyes
Superfast Jellyfish (with De La Soul)
Tomorrow Comes Today
Empire Ants (with Little Dragon)
Broken (with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
Dirty Harry (with Bootie Brown)
El Mañana
White Flag (with Bashy & Kano)
To Binge (with Little Dragon)
DARE (with Rosie Wilson)
Glitter Freeze
Plastic Beach
Encore:
Cloud of Unknowing (with Bobby Womack)
Feel Good Inc. (with De La Soul)
Clint Eastwood (with Bashy & Kano)
Don't Get Lost In Heaven
Demon Days

Tom Petty Rescheduled Show Is A Go

Tom Petty was supposed to perform at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater on Tuesday, September 28. The show was postponed, however, because Tom was suffering from bronchitis and sinusitis. He's been cleared by his doctors to perform, so the new show will be on Tuesday, October 5. All tickets for the original date will be honored. Though ZZ Top had been opening the tour, the rescheduled date will instead feature Los Lobos in the opening slot. For the full press release, click 'keep on reading'

LOS LOBOS WILL APPEAR WITH TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS AT
CRICKET WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE ON OCTOBER 5

San Diego, CA (October 1) – Celebrated rock band LOS LOBOS will appear as Special Guest on the TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS show at CRICKET WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE on Tuesday October 5. Los Lobos replaces ZZ Top who is unavailable for the rescheduled show due to prior tour commitments in Europe.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre appearance is the second to last show on their Mojo Tour 2010. Tom Petty, who was unable to perform on the show’s previous date of September 28 due to sinusitis and bronchitis said, “I am feeling better and looking forward to our show in San Diego. Thank you to everyone for being so patient and my apologies for the inconvenience.”

More than three decades have passed since Los Lobos released their debut album, Just Another Band from East L.A and since then Los Lobos has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots. They have just released Tin Can Trust on Shout Factory Records, their first collection of new original material in four years.

Tickets for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers with Special Guest Los Lobos at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre on October 5 are currently available now at http://www.livenation.com. Tickets for previously scheduled San Diego dates will be honored on October 5.

Frightened Rabbit To Return To San Diego October 16

It's with great pleasure that I get to tell you that Frightened Rabbit have scheduled a fall tour including a San Diego date. The band loves the Casbah and the Casbah loves them, too, but this time around they'll be playing an all ages show at the House of Blues. You can see my post from their recent stop here. These boys spend so much time in the U.S., it makes me wonder if they will eventually move here. If so, I'd love to say that I'm available for a green card marriage. (har, har.) It kinda sucks because it's the same night Foals play at the Casbah, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to pull off both shows in the same night since the doors at HoB are at 8 and the only scheduled opener (so far) is Plants & Animals.

Tickets for this show go on sale Friday, July 16 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster/LiveNation. Tickets are $18.50 adv/$20.50 day of show, but I'm pretty confident this one will sell out, so if you wanna go, don't wait to get tickets.
