Photos: The Fratellis at the Observatory, May 4, 2018

Here's another post that got caught in my drafts but never posted. This was back in May at the Observatory with the Fratellis. I can't remember anything particularly noteworthy of the night. Not to say the band wasn't great---they were and are--but I remember racing to get to the show on time, feeling a little flustered once I actually arrived, and then seeing a show with great lighting all in the shade of a kinda ridiculous fedora/Panama hat kinda bummed me out. I'm no stylist, I'm defnitely no fashionista, but if men never wore hats on stage again, I'd be super okay with it. I guess that and chewing gum are my two big stage peeves. That's neither here nor there. The band is super energetic and it's definitely infectious with their audience. More pictures are after the jump.

Some things on my mind that I had to share, after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, August 28-Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Seeing as I already updated my week on Friday, I'll mention that later that night I went to the Casbah and it was insano. I didn't even bother shooting that night, but it was a pretty fun night. On Saturday night, I went to the Observatory to shoot Madison Cunningham, the opener for Punch Brothers. I shot them a little, too, but it was challenging because we weren't allowed in the pit because the show was being filmed for KPBS. After that show, I met up with Darren at Soda Bar for Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever. It was the first night of their US tour and it was super great. The rest of the weekend was super mellow, Nova and I have been hanging out a ton while Ddarren works, and of course I had to catch the Sharp Objects finale. This week is super chill, I might head to the Office on Wednesday and I might try to find an in for the Observatory on Thursday. Other than that, I'm just gonna go with the flow. Since it's Labor Day weekend, I've done listings through Tuesday. You can find the after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, August 24-Monday, August 27, 2018

This week has been a pretty great one so far, but I thought I'd update the listings since I'd omitted the Records Collecting Dust II screenings. Apologies for the oversight. Tuesday was just a chill night at home, and Nova and I watched "The Breadwinner" on Netflix, which I HIGHLY recommend, especially if you have tween kids, but even if you don't. On Wednesday I went to The Merrow for the first time in ages to see Micah Schnabel, then closed down the night at The Office's emo night. Thursday I went to see "Once" at the Lamb's Players Theatre, and it was excellent. When I came home, Darren had never seen it, so we watched the movie. It was kind of a perfect night. It's gonna be an awesome weekend and I hope to see some of you out on the town. Listings through Monday are after the jump.

Photos: Nada Surf Celebrating the 15th Anniversary of ‘Let Go’ at Belly Up, May 14, 2018

Another show from back in May. I was on a roll that month and I guess these took me so long to post because they're mostly terrible. The lighting just wasn't working for me, I super suck at shooting through hazers and fog machines, and I'm kinda there welling up with tears as Nada Surf celebrated the 10 year anniversary of Let Go. Every song was amazing, but dudes, gimme something with that lighting!!

I'd heard that after other shows on the tour, Matthew Caws had been going to the merch booth and playing an acoustic song. So I went back and waited at the end of the show, and then awkwardly got trapped in the corner. The lighting is even more awful than the rest of the concert, but because Matthew and I were literally shoulder to shoulder, the sound was amazing, so I thought it was still worth the share. Anyway, it was another fantastic Nada Surf show and I can't wait to hear them do it again, hopefully sooner rather than later. More photos after the jump.

Photos: Trashcan Sinatras- 1 Night, 2 Albums at Casbah, May 16, 2018

Between getting photo passes and shows that I just shoot at Soda Bar, Casbah, and The Irenic, I have a grip of photos I've never posted. On top of all of that, When I actually had the time to upload photos, I thought I'd published and did not ever pull the trigger (or click the button, in this case) so let's go back to before summer, shall we?

On May 16th, Trash Can Sinatras kicked off their national tour at the Casbah. I fell in love with the band back around 9th or 10th grade and have tried to see them any chance I've gotten since then-- which is not very often. On this particular tour, they were playing Cake and I've Seen Everything in their entirety, though they kicked off with some favorites from outside those records, like one of my favorites, "Got Carried Away".

This was a sold out show and partially seated--which as you know doesn't happen very often--but obviously there aren't seats for everybody. This didn't please a lady behind me who got a barstool and wanted me to move from the sidestage area. I think she calmed down when she realized another 25 people would eventually fill in the area from her stool to the stage, or else she just death-stared the back of our heads the rest of the night. I didn't particularly care, just wante dot make sure that I got some video of that first record. It was doubly cool because my sister was able to come to the show with me, something else that doesn't happen often.

Needless to say, it was an incredible show and though it might be awhile before they return, this night will stay fresh in the brain for awhile. Full video playlist and some photos after the jump.

Things To Do in San Diego: Tuesday, August 21-Thursday, August 23, 2018

Nova started middle school last week and she seems to be adjusting well, and it also means we have a little more adult time around the house and our days aren't completely devoted to trying to entertain an 11 year old, so it's good for all of us, I think. Massive thanks to the Krimston family who are loaning her a flute so she can join sixth grade band. I got to see some great shows last week, like Brandi Carlile at Humphrey's, American Aquarium at Casbah, Snow Patrol at Harrah's, and Rooney at the Casbah. We also spent an amazing Sunday at Balboa Park with a bunch of friends and so it was a very good week. This week I intend to lay low, but there's some cool free stuff, like a free show with LA Witch on Friday at the Casbah (RSVP here), some fun street fairs, and a free show with the Schizophonics at Broadstone, (RSVP here) a new housing building in North Park. I'd love to see the Punch Brothers, too, but I haven't sorted that one out as yet. Full archives through Thursday are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, August 14-Monday, August 21, 2018

We're in the middle of August which means Nova starts middle school today. I'm excited for her in many ways, but I've also probably been watching far too many teen dramas, including Eighth Grade, which was supposed to put me at ease but really is just a reminder that we might grow older without ever really "growing up". We had a good week--after doing two days of the Facebook seminars, we had school orientation, some school shopping, and the usual soccer practices to keep our days busy, all the while working, catching some shows, like Jesse Marchant (above) and Howard Ivans at Soda Bar and double dipping on Friday with Vinyl Williams and Winter at Blonde before catching Ben Nichols at Casbah. Of course, we didn't quite do some things we'd hoped, like catching Safari Park International Extravaganza or even get back to the beach, mostly because both were insanely hot. This is a good week of stuff, I'm not committed to much, but I'm definitely catching Brandi Carlile at Humphrey's and Snow Patrol at Harrah's. Full listings for the week are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, August 7-Monday, August 13, 2018

Man, sometimes these listings feel like they're going to kill me. It was a great week...I got to shoot The Decemberists and Whitney on Monday at Humphrey's, and we spent Tuesday at La Jolla Cove.  That night, Darren and I had a blast at the Casbah celebrating the Loudspeaker 30th Anniversary. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling super great on Wednesday, sometimes paralyzing anxiety is a symptom of PMS for us ladies, so I interviewed Givers for NBC but didn't make it back for their actual show. Thursday was pretty low key, Nova had a sleepover so Darren and I went to see Eighth Grade. By Friday I got to shoot American Football and Phoebe Bridgers, then went to the Casbah for Rebecca Jade, and closed the night at Bar Pink with Jakey. On Saturday, we spent the day at Mission Bay for my niece's birthday then I took Nova to her end of season Derby Party. After all day out, I had planned on staying in, but Vacationer's tour manager asked if I was gonna be there and I couldn't say no, but fortunately we all got to sleep in on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon we had to do a store run for all the ice and water to sell at Hop Along, so we got to see their soundcheck then grabbed dinner to return and work the show, which was amazing, by the way. On Monday I made Nova spend the day with me at the free "Facebook Community Boost" marketing event and we actually ended up having a really fun time listening and learning, and we'll be back on Tuesday before her( sixth grade middle school orientation. (Lordy, help us.) I don't really have any shows locked in this week, but I'm hoping to see Jesse Marchant and Ben Nichols, and probably check out the Bay Sessions at Loew's on Sunday. Hoping to throw in another beach day and Safari Park, too. I hope everyone has a super awesome week. Listings are after the jump. FYI, Facebook doesn't autopost my listings link anymore, so if you don't mind liking and sharing the link, I'd super appreciate it.
