Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, June 27-Thursday, June 30, 2016

We're back from another trip to Hercules. It's always nice spending time out of the city and catching up with Darren's family, but it's also really hard when it comes to talking about an aging parent and 'next steps' and envisioning scenarios that can come up unexpectedly and all the paperwork and details that have to be thought about. I guess we never really feel like we're old enough to deal with these sorts of things. But overall it was a great trip. We also had some van trouble, but I was impressed that a FEMALE auto technician was the one who was able to diagnose and fix a problem that seemed to allude every other mechanic we've talked to about it for the last couple years, and it drove like a dream the whole way home. Now we come to a week we've been dreading for months, when Nova leaves to spend four weeks in St Louis. I can't really get into it, but suffice to say that while Darren and I plan on enjoying the time together, it's going to be super anxious and stressful, too. Until then, we plan on making the best of the week, probably hitting the beach and the fair and waterslides before she goes. Listings this week are pretty thin, but I did them through the 4th of July so you can make plans if fireworks are your thing. Monday through Thursday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, June 24-Sunday, June 26, 2016

I'm still enjoying my short but sweet little escape Northern California. I've been working the whole time I've been here, but at least it's a change of scenery. Unfortunately we had some problems with the van, so while it's getting fixed, Darren is meeting with his cousin and Nova and I are just chilling, which is fine by me after the epic hiking day we had yesterday in the Stinson Beach area. We went to this really nice Audobon Preserve and it had a smaller redwood grove, but it sure beat the crowds of Muir Woods and Mt. Tam. We also got to see the seal colony up here which was pretty nice (and incidentally, way more protected than our abused seals of La Jolla). Our time here is super limited, so I'll just wish you all a good weekend and catch you on the flip. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Upcoming Observatory Shows (Updated 6.23.2016)

It has been a busy couple weeks as a ton of new shows have been added at the Observatory. If you ever want to feel bad for me, think about each new show conservatively representing somewhere near 100 emails between the booking of the show and the actual date of the show. The fun never ends, even when I'm on vacation, even as I type this from my hotel room while everyone else is asleep. So here are the new shows this week (in addition to Phantogram, which also goes on sale today): Panteon Rococo (7/21), Mozzy (7/28), Subhumans @ MUSIC BOX SD (9/15), Carla Morrisson (9/16), Atmosphere (9/23), Molotov (9/26), Oh Wonder (9/27), and The Heavy (9/30)

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, June 20-Thursday, June 23, 2016

I hope everyone had a great Father's Day weekend. We had so much fun at the Bowiephonics show in Pioneer Park on Friday evening, then caught Shades McCool at the Hideout, hung out with friends at the Whistle Stop, then shut it down at the Ken Club. On Saturday, I worked at our DoSD event at SILO for a few hours before working at the Irenic for Sarah Jarosz. Afterward, I walked home and it felt like Vegas, warm air at night with a nearly full moon. It was awesome, but I lost motivation by the time I got home and stayed home watching movies instead of catching Day Wave. Sunday was spent with my dad, who's still struggling with major health issues, but still with us and fighting the good fight, and nothing makes him happier than having all of his grandkids present simultaneously. We're heading up to Hercules this week so don't expect a lot of updates around here Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, June 17-Sunday, June 19, 2016

When we help Nova with homework, I try really hard to make sure to use the correct language. "You" have to do homework, not "we"; "you" did great on your test, not "we" passed! But today is Nova's last day of third grade, and WE did it! I had no idea going into the school year that we would become full time parents, that I would get an additional job (to add to the four I already have), that things would be so good, and so rewarding, and so exhausting. I'm so glad to be living in this time in history, where I can take a laptop and phone and work anywhere...playgrounds, skating rinks, pools, the beach, in the car. So summer break is official, and while she'll be in St. Louis for part of the summer, we're looking forward to long days in the sun, exploring all of our favorite parts of this city, and working my ass off. Be sure to join me on Saturday at Do The RIDE Thing, a free event (with RSVP) at SILO at Makers Quarter. The event is from 4-8pm and has both parts of Pinback playing, with Rob Crow's Gloomy Place and Systems Officer. I hope everyone has an awesome weekend. Saturday and Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, June 13-Thursday, June 16, 2016

Sometimes, there is great joy in nothing. On Friday, Nova had a slumber party, so it was a fun date night with Darren that started at The Hideout, took us to West Coast Tavern, and then we hung out at the Casbah for Islands, Ted Leo, and Honus Honus. And then Saturday, I did nothing. I hung around the house, watched movies, and I didn't work. I took the whole day off. And it was awesome. Of course, in exchange, that meant I worked all day Sunday while Darren and Nova went to Aquatica, but it was a nice quiet day before I went to an amazing seven course media dinner at Pardon My French, which took over the space on Park formerly occupied by Heat. The food and wine was amazing and it left me a little behind in work, but I guess I'll have to catch up on Monday. This week is mostly chill and then next weekend is INSANE, so plan accordingly. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Saturday: Vinyl Junkies Record Swap @ Casbah

It's time for another Vinyl Junkies Record Swap at the Casbah. On Saturday, from 11am-5m, you can peruse thousands of records while listening to hand-selected locals spinning vinyl, enjoying Lefty's pizza, and of course, day drinking at the Casbah. The event is still only $3 at the door. Check out the DJ lineup after the jump.

Things to Do In San Diego: Friday, June 10-Sunday, June 12, 2016

I've been mostly laying low this week. After going to Caravan Palace and The Tribute to Prince on Monday, I stayed up all night working and slept for a only a few hours before going to Aquatica on Nova's early day. I've been sick and worn down ever since. Maybe part of it is election and rape scandal fatigue. It was also a rough week when San Diego Zoo announced that Janey the Orangutan had been euthanized after she experienced several heart attacks. I think everybody who "knew" Janey loved her. She was in her 50s, and the story the docents always told was that she was once a pet in a household in England but as she grew, the family could no longer care for her and surrendered her to a zoo, and eventually she ended up in San Diego. Her former family had young children, which was why she spent most of her days up against the glass, interacting with very small children. This is a pic from 2014, when I would watch my friend Melanie's son once or twice a week, jumping on the 10 bus and spending entire days at the zoo, week after week. Janey always had her way of saying hi, and I was definitely one of the many whackos who wanted to hang out with her as much as I could. I'm heartbroken for the loss to the zoo and all of Janey's admirers. It's not just the human rock stars that are being lost in 2016.

Weekend archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, June 7-Thursday, June 9, 2016

Once again, the weekend is over way too quickly and all I want to do is catch up on sleep, but time just doesn't work that way. I spent some of the weekend working, we went to a pool party in Jamul, checked out Art Around Adams for a hot minute, went to Three Mile Pilot, and spent Sunday in Oceanside at SPF. There are a lot of exciting shows this week, the County Fair is in full swing, and schools are winding down their school years, but the biggest and most important thing going on is Election Day this Tuesday. I haven't been shy about my support for Bernie Sanders, and whether he stands a chance or not, he's getting my primary vote. There are tons of other very important votes to make, including a San Diego mayoral primary which Faulconer could win outright with 50% plus one vote. Dreadful. Anyway, don't skip the vote, and if you're having trouble with your ballot, do what I do, and ask Lucas.  Archives after the jump.
