It's a little sad to me that I'll be missing this year's Independence Jam because I love the shows at Oceanside Pier, but I've got a long planned weekend trip to Seattle. But, that doesn't mean you can't go and this one is gonna be good. Tickets are only $25 and you can buy them here.

Today is the day! FM 94/9 Independence Jam is happening at the Junior Seau Amphitheatre at the Oceanside Pier. I'm posting set times for easy reference later on.
A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of attending one of FM 94/9's "Loud @" private sessions at the House of Blues Voodoo Room. What was fitting was that though I have seen Silversun Pickups probably a dozen or more times, my first time ever seeing them was in the same room (though Brian told me their first SD show was actually at the Casbah opening for Brendan Bensen). I have to say we were pretty spoiled because while the rest of the crowd assembled in the bar, we were allowed to be in the room while Nikki and Brian soundchecked. In fact, I was helping Nova with her homework as Darren parked the car and then joined us inside, which is always fun being privy to their banter, and just hearing the songs so pure without anyone standing in front of you or talking over the music. We got to chit chat a little before they opened the doors and let everyone in, and I have to say it was pretty great hearing their songs so intimately again. It was also pretty rad getting to share the moment with Nova, who came up while I was recording and started taking photos with my phone. After the set, she asked me if we would be able to see Silversun Pickups again. In fact, we'll be seeing them this Saturday at the Oceanside Pier for FM 94/9 Independence Jam. (Along with Metric, who I interviewed on NBC SoundDiego here.) I'm a little surprised there are still tickets available, to be honest, but there are and you can get them here.
Anyway, I was really lagging on posting these videos but the day this was filmed, I also worked for The Drums at the Irenic and then went to the Casbah for Rocky Votolato, Dave Hause, and Chris Farren, and have pretty much been swamped between then and now. In fact, I'm posting this as I'm slinging merch for The Church and Psychedelic Furs at The Observatory, and even so only because I'm procrastinating doing my actual work. So finally, my four videos from their set are below in the playlist. They played "Lazy Eye", "The Pit", "The Royal We", and their new single "Nightlight". I have a full concert of theirs from 2012 at The Observatory Santa Ana and another from 2012 at The Belly Up if you're really feeling their vibe.
Lest you feared that Dirty Parts Festival was the big show of the year for FM 94/9, yesterday they announced the 2015 Independence Jam, returning to the Junior Seau Amphitheatre at the Oceanside Pier. The show is September 12, all ages, and gates open at 3pm. The show is headlined by Silversun Pickups, and also features appearances by Houndmouth, Meg Myers, Civil Twilight, Bully and The New Regime. Tickets are onsale now for $28 and can be upgraded to VIP for an additional $15.
FM 94/9 Independence Jam is finally here! The event is sold out as is the bus to get there, but the Coaster is running today and it's definitely worth it to take public transportation. See you all there!!

We love all of radio friends around here, and we're looking forward to another awesome year on the Pier for FM 94/9 Independence Jam. I made the mistake of letting my parents plan my birthday party on Saturday, so I'm going to be there late, but you should get there early for this cool lineup of eclectic bands. Bookmark this page for easy reference on your mobile device. Other than my birthday BBQ and seeing American Authors and DEJJ, we'll be on call for the van anyway, so hit us up if you need Darren's Van.

As reported by The Reader and CityBeat and The Reader again, Kadan is closing down (effective August 22). The neighborhood bar which sits at the corner of 30th and Adams, has been around for about a decade and while both articles focus on the nightlife of the bar, it was also one of the cheapest drinking spots around (with happy hour offering wells as low at $1.50 the last time I was there during daylight). So they're reporting that the adjacent taco shop, the laundromat, the liquor store and the bar will become one large establishment from the owners of Neighborhood. While technically located in North Park, the neighborhood straddles Normal Heights and University Heights and has sometimes been referenced as "Between Heights". The little corner that could has changed numerous times over the years, in fact, my dad loves to tell me how he and his buddies enjoyed 25 cent pitchers on what was known as "The Four Corners" back in the early 70's (though he probably had to walk uphill both ways through the snow to get there). Currently the corner is home to Air Conditioned Bar, Casa Mayahuel, Jayne's Gastropub, and Antique Row Cafe.
Festivals Galore
There are so. many. festivals! It feels like Street Scene is far enough behind us that everyone is ponying up to attempt to create the next big festival. Imagine a world where they'd all get together and share sponsorship! Until that comes, two new festivals are on the horizon: The SoCal Music Fest on September 1 and Night & Day Street Fest on October 13, both in the East Village.
The SoCal Music Festival is the cooperative effort of MacFarlane Promotions, RMD Group, and Event Vibe. It will be held between 9th and Park along G St. with four stages and various "SoCal experiences". The lineup includes Cold War Kids, Designer Drugs, Felguk, Krewella, Too Short and more, including locals like Vokab Kompany, Hyena, Family Wagon, and The New Kinetics. Ticket prices increase the closer the show gets, but are currently available for $40. Get info here.
Night & Day Street Fest is being brought to you by UT San Diego on 14th between K and Imperial on October 13th from 4pm-midnight. The lineup features Donovan Frankenreiter, G. Love, Pato Banton, and Everest with local support from The Nervous Wreckords, The Styletones, Low Volts, and Mattson 2. Tickets for the event are $25 or $95 for their VIP package. Get more info here.
Keep in mind, these are in addition to the other great things we already have in San Diego, like the San Diego Music Thing (September 14-15, $30-$55), Adams Avenue Street Fair (September 29-30, Free), and I presume Rocktoberfest will return to North Park in late October.
FM 94/9 Independence Jam Lineup Change
Speaking of festivals, some bummer news about FM 94/9's Indie Jam...the Casbah stage has been canceled. The lineup for the show has been updated on FM 94/9's page to feature Fiona Apple, Best Coast, Oberhofer, and Gardens & Villa. Ticket prices have not changed, which probably just means you'll get longer sets from the four bands on the main stage. If your were set on seeing Father John Misty and Pinback, they can still be seen at the San Diego Music Thing. (Read about new music from Pinback courtesy of CityBeat's Check 1, Check 2 blog.) FM 94/9 is offering "safe rides" to and from the Oceanside Pier For just $15 from North Park (True North Tavern), Downtown(Barleymash) or Pacific Beach (Open Bar). Get tickets for the concert and the bus here.
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
Perhaps you were already aware that Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips has been working with legendary director Des MacAnuff to create Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. The musical will make its World Debut at the La Jolla Playhouse in November, and this week, NME featured a preview about the show. Tickets haven't gone on sale just yet, but keep your eyes and ears open for what promises to be an interesting musical adventure.
I feel like I've been rounding up all of these cool links and seeing cool stuff across the web, but the Facebook social monopoly (and completely stupid friend algorithm that decides who sees my posts and whose posts I see) really makes me crazy.
Here's how I spend my time online.
The Tallest Man on Earth performed on the syndicated radio show/podcast eTown. This guy is amazing and the last time I saw him I was sitting in misery in the corner of The Loft with back spasms. This time around, you can see them at the Birch North Park Theatre on 9.2.2012. Get tickets here, and watch/listen to the eTown performance here.

Finally, I know people are often surprised when I tell them that I watch The Bachelorette. It is seriously the best show to watch On Demand while I'm working because it repeats itself so often that it really takes no attention away from what I'm doing. That being said, I know it is terrible and this season I have especially loved watching "Burning Love", a web-series that makes fun of some of the more absurd moments of the season but is hilarious even if you've never watched The Bachelor or Bachelorette, and I'm pretty sure it's made by the same people as Children's Hospital. You can see the Yahoo! series here.
Today FM 94/9 revealed the lineup for this year's Independence Jam: Coastal Invasion 2012. Not to be confused with the recent Sandy Parts Festival, also held at the beautiful ocean-adjacent Oceanside Amphitheatre and Pier, this event is their big summer show. It will be held September 16 at 3pm with two stages and is an all ages event.
Tickets are $45 ($55 day of) and go onsale Friday at 10am, but if you're an Insider, there will be a presale on Thursday so keep an eye out for an email in your inbox.
Last year I took a ton of photos at the Fm 94/9 Independence Jam and I seriously don't think I ever got around to posting them. Sometimes I plan on writing a ton and it just doesn't happen. So instead, I'm gonna just post the photos and wipe my hands clean of it.
I promised these kids that their photo would be the first one posted. They were such troopers. They were in the front the entire day, engaged with every band, and were SO excited to be there. While I take it for granted that I've seen every band on the bill before (some of them several times) I forget how much it sucks to be locked out of so many shows when you're under 21, so even though these bands come through town, this was the first chance to see them for a lot of the kids there. This made the final act, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, feel like a religious experience when watching the band through the eyes of kids seeing them for the first time. I took a lot of photos but I don't need to overwhelm you with most of them. Click 'keep on reading' for more.
My day started with Tim Pyles picking me up a little after 1. We had to swing by the station for a minute and headed north. Neither of us had eaten, and since he's never been to Hensley's, we stopped in. I had their cheesesteak which was super tasty, but had we known the BBQ would be in full swing at the Casbah stage, we probably should've just waited till we got to the venue because that carne asada looked tasty. No biggie though....when we arrived, Delta Spirit was finishing up their sound check and doors opened about half an hour later.
The mannequins were part of The Burning of Rome's stage props, but White Apple Tree kicked off the day with a fun set of their 80s inspired synth heavy dance rock.
My day pretty much consisted of drinking a beer, shooting photos for the first part of any given band's set, then jumping to the next stage to prepare for more photos. It has been a long time since I've seen Delta Spirit, and my first time since their latest album dropped, and I really love hearing them perform.
I checked out the VIP area briefly, but it's mostly station clients and I didn't really know anyone up there, so I ventured back to the Casbah stage for The Burning of Rome. The band certainly knows how to entertain a crowd and I love the format of bouncing between stages because it gives the crowd a chance to see local bands they might not be familiar with. The Burning of Rome is from Oceanside, however, so there were plenty of friends and fans there singing along with every word. The band just signed to Surf Dog Records, so I suspect you'll be hearing a lot more from the band in the months to come.
Back to the mainstage and The Whigs gave another rousing performance. The Athens, Georgia band was last here at the Belly Up and I guess they really love San Diego. Apparently on Monday, they shot a music video at the Whistle Stop. Sweet!
Back on the local stage, The Nervous Wreckords were gearing up to play. Nick Venti (Republic of Letters) is the official drummer these days, and we all had a good time shooting the shit backstage before they started. TNW have fast catchy songs that are perfect for an outdoor stage, and with the gorgeous ladies in the group, they not only sound great, but they are fun to shoot.
As the sun began to set in Oceanside, Rogue Wave took to the mainstage. Unfortunately, this is when my equipment is lacking and for all the photos I took, I know the photos just aren't that great. Still, it was fun being up front for a band whose music is so irresistable.
As I wandered back to the local stage, I took in the view from the top of the amphitheatre and then bumped into Ryan from White Apple Tree with his mom and sister. For Silent Comedy I was in an ideal spot, standing on the wing of the stage, but my camera does not like LED lighting whatsoever, so you'll have to check out the videos and forgive my images. The band certainly had a huge crowd and they always bring their A-game to every show, rocking out like it's their last show ever. It was a bit bittersweet as it was Ian's last show with the band, but they'll carry on and continue to rock out and represent San Diego.
Finally it was time to head back to the mainstage for Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. The crowd was so into the band and it was exciting to see Alex vibing off the crowd's energy, jumping onto the railing several times. It felt like every person there knew every word and with 4200+ people in attendance, it was hard not to get caught up in the moment.
Nearing the end of the night, I made my way to the hotel where Tim Pyles was finishing up his live broadcast. The Nervous Wreckords dropped in for a minute but eventually it was time to call it a night. It had been an awesome day and I loved every second of it. And of course there are no breaks with music...there are tons of great shows and events happening...I hope to see everyone at the San Diego Music Awards on September 12 where we'll do it all over again.
