Things To Do In San Diego: Wednesday, September 21-Wednesday, September 27, 2022: Sarah McLachlan | Andrew Bird | Schizophonics | Adams Avenue Street Fair | ArtWalk Carlsbad | Wild Horses 22 | CRSSD | Sudan Archives | Iron Maiden | Lykke Li |

This always happens. My birthday is next week and I didn't know if I should do listings through my birthday so I can take the time off, or just suck it up because I want to spend time with my partner tonight. I guess I'll update these listings if more things come up but wow...literally amazing shows every night of the week. I'm hoping to get out a little myself - obviously Adams Avenue Street Fair is just up the street from me so I'll walk there if it isn't blistering, but Sudan Archives is amazing, so is William Fitzsimmons, and hopefully I'll squirm my way into Lykke Li. So much good stuff this weekend, tons of festivals, and it kind of exhausts me just looking at the list.

Stay safe out there.

This Weekend: Adams Avenue Street Fair

The Adams Avenue Street Fair returns this weekend for the 38th year. I'm not super in love with this poster because you can barely read any of it, but instead I'll just make sure you have the link for all the stage lineups and performance times. I've been fortunate to live within walking distance for over 20 years, but this year is not looking good for spending much time as Nova's got soccer in the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday and I'll be working at the Loft on Saturday from load-in till load-out. Ah well. I'm sure I'll find a way to make it happen, even if just for a little bit. Bear in mind that this is a free, all ages, family-friendly event that gets THOUSANDS of attendees, so while you can bring your pets, they're not allowed in many of the businesses or beer gardens, the cement gets crazy hot, and stupid things like trash and dropped food can be a hazard not worth the risk. Leave your doggies at home for your own sanity (and theirs).

Adams Avenue Street Fair Lineups Released

I told you I had a million things to catch up on, and I'm doing my best to catch up on old news. The Adams Avenue Business Association released the schedule a while ago, but we're still a month out so it's all good. The Adams Avenue Street Fair takes placec on September 21st & 22nd on Adams from 35th to 30th with a new stage added to the mix by Polite Provisions.
Check out the whole lineup and schedule here.

Upcoming Casbah and Casbah Presents (Updated 9/10)

I've been trying to post this list all week, but we keep adding shows, but I guess so it will always be. There are some pretty incredible shows coming up at the Casbah and around town, so don't miss out. And even though it isn't music, I'm stoked that we announced the return of comedian Gad Elmaleh at The Irenic. That one will definitely sell out (he sold out two shows there in the spring) so don't wait to buy tickets. He is very funny. This list is so long, it's getting kind of ridiculous, so I've just got the rest of the week, and everything else is after the jump.

Thu Sep 10 - Johnette Napolitano (of Concrete Blonde), Laurie Sargent @ Casbah

Thu Sep 10 - Get Up Kids @ Observatory North Park

Fri Sep 11 - Mystic Braves, Muscle Beech, The Creation Factory, Amerikan Bear @ Casbah

Sat Sep 12 - Mr. Tube & The Flying Objects, The Creepy Creeps, Tropical Popsicle @ Casbah

Sat Sep 12 - Destruction Unit, Die Mißbildungen Des Menschen @ The Hideout

Sun Sep 13 - Willis Earl Beale, Like A Villain, Tori Roze and the Hot Mess @ Casbah

Recommended Shows in San Diego September 23-29, 2013

The last week of September continues in San Diego with beautiful weather and more music options than one can possibly attend. A closer look reveals some of the shows worthy of attention.

On Monday Austin folk rockers The Lonesome Heroes headline an impressive lineup with The Easy Leaves and John Meeks at the Casbah...

Consult the listings and try something different on Tuesday...

New Zealand synth pop artists The Naked and Famous will be at the House of Blues on Wednesday...Portland's dream pop band Blouse headline The Void for the late night show...

Woods and The Fresh & Onlys team for a great indie rock bill at the Casbah on Thursday...highly recommended...

Nick Thorburn, aka Nick Diamonds, brings his Canadian band Islands to the Casbah on Friday...they just released their quirky new album Ski Mask...if you have yet to see them perform live, now is your chance...

If psychedelic pop is your thing, catch Portland's Unknown Mortal Orchestra at the Casbah on Saturday...the Adams Avenue Street Fair offers a tremendous variety of musical offerings during the daylight hours...

Sunday marks the second day of wonderful music along Adams Avenue...for the adventurous, head over to The Void to watch Lapalux close the weekend...

All in all, a great way to end the month and fall into October, San Diego style...

Adams Avenue Street Fair Opens Submissions

The Adams Avenue Street Fair returns for its 32nd year in Normal Heights and it's time to get your submissions in if you would like your band to be considered for the free festival.

This year's festival will be held on Saturday, September 28, and Sunday, September 29, 2013 and they're now accepting music submissions from now until Monday, July 15.

Please submit an EPK that includes a couple of tracks, photo, and a one paragraph bio to Steve Kader: smkader@cox.net

Or by mail at:

Adams Avenue Business Association
Attn: Adams Avenue Street Fair Music Submissions
4649 Hawley Blvd.
San Diego, CA 92116

That seems easy enough, right? Well, as someone on the music committee that has to sift through all of the entries, here are some tips:

-sending a package with a CD with all of the bands info on the case and on the CD is the best way to get your band heard

-if you choose to send an email, use a CLEAR SUBJECT on your email, i.e. "Adams Avenue Band Submission from (Band Name). These emails are forwarded to several people and will be junk mail if it isn't clear what they're about.

-While Steve accepts MP3 files, his inbox will fill up really fast. A better option is to link to EACH TRACK hosted on SoundCloud, Bandcamp. SonicBids and Reverbnation also work, but the sound is pretty terrible. We pretty much listen through a laptop speaker, so consider that when you submit.

-Submit tracks with a VERY SHORT intro. Imagine a room of 5 or 6 people sifting through 100 or 300 or 500 emails. If your music doesn't catch the ears in the first 30 seconds, it could just be moved aside.

-Be realistic. Does your band belong on a festival stage? Can you draw a crowd? Where have you played before and what was the turnout? Certainly all bands are considered, but we walk into the meeting with "dream lists" of bands we would like to see perform. Budget is set aside for big touring acts to anchor the stages, local bands are paid very modestly to perform as support.

-Have a concise bio. "So and so is a (insert genre) band from San Diego that sound like X, Y, and Z. The # members met at XYZ and have been performing live at venues like A, B, and C, for # years."

-If you are an ACOUSTIC act, send your package in to Steve, but also get in touch with Louis at Lestat's, as he generally handles all acoustic acts.

-Don't email me. This is Steve's baby, I don't know if or how much I'll be involved.

-Include your preferred stage and availability. The stages are rock, world music, acoustic, roots, and blues. If you can only play one day or the other or are limited to daytime or nighttime, say so, though being available anytime on either day will increase your chances of performing.

-The music committee tries not to repeat performers. If you played in 2012, you might not be asked to play in 2013. Try again in 2014.

Things To Do In San Diego: September 28-September 30, 2012

I really meant to take some time to update these listings. For example, I completely forgot to list San Diego Film Festival activities like tonight's Almost Famous Block Party or the Oktoberfest at the German-American Societies in El Cajon, but I've gotta get ready to get outta here, so hopefully you can explore their websites on your own. Friday through Sunday archives are after the jump. By the way, as of now (6:46pm), there are only 26 tickets available to Menomena tonight.

Newsy Bits: Waterguns, Bars, Fests & Other San Diego Stuff

It felt like a lof stuff has been going on so if you haven't been paying attention, here's what's up these days:

Watergun Aftermath at Balboa Park
There have been many reactions to the watergun fight and subsequent damage at Balboa Park's iconic lily-pond. CityBeat's Justin Hudnall wrote a first-person account of the night and one of the organizers, Matthew Hardick, has come forward with an exclusive interview with News 8. It has been reported that donations from the public have exceeded $9,000 and you can donate to Friends of Balboa Park here. Summary: a handful of idiots ruin an event that, while poorly thought out, was created with good intentions.

Kadan Loses Lease
As reported by The Reader and CityBeat and The Reader again, Kadan is closing down (effective August 22). The neighborhood bar which sits at the corner of 30th and Adams, has been around for about a decade and while both articles focus on the nightlife of the bar, it was also one of the cheapest drinking spots around (with happy hour offering wells as low at $1.50 the last time I was there during daylight). So they're reporting that the adjacent taco shop, the laundromat, the liquor store and the bar will become one large establishment from the owners of Neighborhood. While technically located in North Park, the neighborhood straddles Normal Heights and University Heights and has sometimes been referenced as "Between Heights". The little corner that could has changed numerous times over the years, in fact, my dad loves to tell me how he and his buddies enjoyed 25 cent pitchers on what was known as "The Four Corners" back in the early 70's (though he probably had to walk uphill both ways through the snow to get there). Currently the corner is home to Air Conditioned Bar, Casa Mayahuel, Jayne's Gastropub, and Antique Row Cafe.

Festivals Galore
There are so. many. festivals! It feels like Street Scene is far enough behind us that everyone is ponying up to attempt to create the next big festival. Imagine a world where they'd all get together and share sponsorship! Until that comes, two new festivals are on the horizon: The SoCal Music Fest on September 1 and Night & Day Street Fest on October 13, both in the East Village.

The SoCal Music Festival is the cooperative effort of MacFarlane Promotions, RMD Group, and Event Vibe. It will be held between 9th and Park along G St. with four stages and various "SoCal experiences". The lineup includes Cold War Kids, Designer Drugs, Felguk, Krewella, Too Short and more, including locals like Vokab Kompany, Hyena, Family Wagon, and The New Kinetics. Ticket prices increase the closer the show gets, but are currently available for $40. Get info here.

Night & Day Street Fest is being brought to you by UT San Diego on 14th between K and Imperial on October 13th from 4pm-midnight. The lineup features Donovan Frankenreiter, G. Love, Pato Banton, and Everest with local support from The Nervous Wreckords, The Styletones, Low Volts, and Mattson 2. Tickets for the event are $25 or $95 for their VIP package. Get more info here.

Keep in mind, these are in addition to the other great things we already have in San Diego, like the San Diego Music Thing (September 14-15, $30-$55), Adams Avenue Street Fair (September 29-30, Free), and I presume Rocktoberfest will return to North Park in late October.

FM 94/9 Independence Jam Lineup Change
Speaking of festivals, some bummer news about FM 94/9's Indie Jam...the Casbah stage has been canceled. The lineup for the show has been updated on FM 94/9's page to feature Fiona Apple, Best Coast, Oberhofer, and Gardens & Villa. Ticket prices have not changed, which probably just means you'll get longer sets from the four bands on the main stage. If your were set on seeing Father John Misty and Pinback, they can still be seen at the San Diego Music Thing. (Read about new music from Pinback courtesy of CityBeat's Check 1, Check 2 blog.) FM 94/9 is offering "safe rides" to and from the Oceanside Pier For just $15 from North Park (True North Tavern), Downtown(Barleymash) or Pacific Beach (Open Bar).
Get tickets for the concert and the bus here.

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
Perhaps you were already aware that Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips has been working with legendary director Des MacAnuff to create Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. The musical will make its World Debut at the La Jolla Playhouse in November, and this week, NME featured a preview about the show. Tickets haven't gone on sale just yet, but keep your eyes and ears open for what promises to be an interesting musical adventure.

Adams Avenue Street Fair Lineup Announced

Last week, the Adams Avenue Business Association announced the headliners for the annual Adams Avenue Street Fair, and over the weekend, the full schedule was released.

The festival will take place on September 29-30, 2012. The event is FREE and ALL AGES and features seven stages, beer gardens, and food, craft, and art vendors.

This year's festival will be headlined by Strawberry Alarm Clock of "Incense and Peppermints" fame and whose Hammond organ driven sound was largely borrowed in the early 90's psychedelic rave scene (think Inspiral Carpets, Happy Mondays, The Charlatans UK).  The lineup also sees the reunion of The Paladins, performances by Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper, Coco Montoya, Jack Tempchin, Cuckoo Chaos and dozens more.

See the full schedule here and plan accordingly!

How To Submit Your Band For Booking Consideration

Yesterday I met with a small committee who will be making suggestions to the talent buyer for acts for the 30th annual Adams Avenue Street Fair. This year's festival takes place on September 24-25. The weekend has traditionally had amazing local and national acts and there is no plan to change that tradition.

But can I tell you something as a friend and supporter of local music? Some of you need to get your shit together. I mean, some of the packages we received were dreadful, and we haven't even touched electronic submissions.

Here's the thing. This festival is a big deal. It's free. It's massive. Over the free weekend, there are approximately 70 bands. People come from all over the county and beyond because they know they're going to have a great time with great entertainment. But whether you're submitting for the Adams Avenue Street Fair, or you're sending your music to a blogger like me for review or booking consideration in a tiny room, there's no one right way to do it, but there are a million wrong ways. These are all simple and common sense things that you will learn at the San Diego Music Thing (or should've learned at NXNP & NPMT last year.)

1. Send in a quality recording. It can be a CD-R with your tracks and contact scribbled on the CD, but the MUSIC should be clear and audible. 3 packages we received didn't have working CDs. Don't send in DVDs. If all you have pressed is a single or an EP, we're probably not going to be confident that you can pull off a full festival set.

2. Include a one sheet. This should tell us who you are, your style of music, any notable performances or awards. This shouldn't tell us your entire life story. Like a resume, if you lie in your one-sheet, we're gonna know. Have someone else honestly and thoughtfully write it for you because it is pretty obvious when you try to write about yourself if the third person.

3. Beat the deadline. You should always have your materials ready to go at the drop of a hat. As soon as the submissions were announced last week, your package should've been in the mail. The first group of packages got the benefit of 6 people captive around a table. Our next meeting is going to be a whole lot more frantic and your CD might literally get a 20 second listen. That's the reality. I'm taking note, however, so if maybe you're not street fair material, perhaps there are other places I can help book you elsewhere at a later date.

4. Be a pro. If you think about my music listings...on a low estimate I have 3 bands at 20 venues per night and I've been posting listings for over 5 years. Do the math. Name recognition counts. If you sell yourself as a seasoned band and nobody in the room has ever heard your name, you're probably not being realistic about your band or your stature. This is not to say unknown bands won't get a shot, but realistically the committee is looking at blues and rock legends while my personal interest is in the local and regional up and coming bands. We look at the Music Award nominees. We look at the bands that have played other festivals. We look at people who promote their asses off and work hard that will draw people to the festival.

Some other things I learned specifically about the Adams Avenue Street Fair:

Cover Bands- "We only consider bands who cover dead people." It sounds like a joke, but the interest is in great original music and bands. If you're a cover band, this is probably not your event.

Acoustic Musicians- Louie from Lestat's is the primary booker for any acoustic acts. Very few if any acoustic acts will be on any of the street stages.

Street Fair Veterans- The committee is adamant about new bands. They do not like to book the same bands year to year, so if you played last year, you likely won't make the cut this year but might be considered for Roots or the Street Fair again next year.

Stages: The Adams Avenue Street Fair has 6 stages. When you submit your music, it helps to specify the stage you think you should play.

  • 33rd- Indie/Alternative
  • Lestat's- Acoustic
  • 34th- Roots/Rock
  • Hawley- Blues, R&B, Legacy acts
  • Dimille's- Anything goes
  • Park- World Music/Dance

I'm gonna tell you some inside stuff, too. The talent buyer came in with three pages of bands for consideration. I came in with at least 30 bands I'd love to see...my "wish list", if you will. Yes Conor Oberst is on my list. So what? A girl can dream. Each of the other people on the committee have wish lists of their own. 70 slots will fill quickly. I can only listen and make recommendations to the buyer. I feel pretty lucky to be able to contribute and make recommendations, but I have no ultimate power in the selections.

I think that's enough for now. Once again, you can send your EPK to info AT adamsavenuebusiness DOT com or send/hand deliver packages to:

If your band is interested in performing, don't be shy in letting me know. UPDATE:: Send EPKs to info AT adamsavenuebusiness DOT com. I know this was a bit confusing yesterday, but be glad this is a free and fair process and the committee is not using sonicbids.
