Jeff's Weekly Pick: Portugal. The Man @ House of Blues Friday October 29, 2010

Portland based rock band Portugal. The Man has always had curiosity seekers wondering why there is punctuation in the group's name. Co-founders John Gourley and Zach Carothers could give you the answer, so I will just give you a glimpse into their music. Originally from Alaska, the band moved to Oregon and filled out its lineup. The band just released its sixth studio release in less than five years, titled American Ghetto. A more electronic approach differentiates this album from its predecessors. The result is a highly accessible sound, with the band stretching itself in a very effective manner. Not to downplay the earlier releases (which are all very good), this shows the band's willingness to experiment without leaving its signature sound. All this translates into a terrific live performance with bluesy guitars and soulful vocals at the forefront. Currently touring to promote their latest offering, Portugal. The Man will be performing at the House of Blues downtown this Friday. Sounds like a great way to kick off the weekend.

White Denim and Honeychild set the stage.

While each of their albums have their own unique greatness, their live show gets better and better each time I see them. Im more excited for this show than a spoiled kid on christmas.
