"San Diego Symphony Announces Bayside Performance Park" Opening in 2020
![]() |
rendering from San Diego Symphony/Raindrop Marketing |
Today the San Diego Symphony announced the Bayside Performance Park is set to open in 2020. I'm not a big fan of 'public-private partnerships' and giveaways of public land to private entities, but I haven't delved deep enough into this deal to really know how the thing came to take shape, how the land was given or sold or leased. As the current Bayside stage on Embarcadero Marina Park South is an eyesore and limits public access, it feels like the public just accepted it for so long that of course this is an improvement, but it still makes me feel icky, which is the general feeling I get whenever Jacobs' name is attached to anything. I hope I'm wrong and the promises made to the public come to fruition. So often we see 'public access' guaranteed and then funding is cut so, for example, public bathrooms end up locked during any meaningful hours when the public would actually need them. Let's just leave as being cautiously optimistic, though the way the Port is so eagerly giving away Embarcadero Marina Park North to future hotel development and the eventual razing of Seaport Village, I'm not sure I trust their stewardship in anything. Decide for yourself.

San Diego Summer: Family Outings, Summer Camps, & Things For Kids To Do
Nova has already finished 6th grade. Last Friday was her last day of school and we're in full how-to-occupy-her-time freak out. How are we going to keep her busy and prevent her from saying the forbidden word (B-O-R-E-D) when we still have to work around here? A couple years ago I did a post about Summer Camps because I was busy researching for her, but now that she's 12 (and spends a month in St. Louis during the peak of summer vacation), we tend to find fun stuff to do more readily, but I still thought I'd update this post for other parents out there who might be hunting for ways to keep the kids occupied. I'd love to hear your favorite spots or camps in the comments. And we'd love to be invited to your pools on a moments notice. Lists after the jump...

Del Mar Racing Announces Summer Concert Series
When I was growing up, one of my favorite things to do was to go to the racetrack. My grandpa had trained and raced horses at Caliente long before I was born, and though he'd eventually lose all his horses, he never lost the love of the track. He was a farmer, always in his tan long-sleeve button down work shirt and work pants with a scruffy face of stubble and his hole-ridden straw work hat. That is, unless it was a day at the races, in which case he'd shave, slather on his Old Spice, a long sleeve button down dress shirt and dress pants, and his fancy boots and hat. It was joyful. Sometimes it would be the whole family at the races, sometimes just Tata, my dad, and me. I'd race with him to the paddock, because he always had to see the horses before they'd race, and he and my dad would teach me how to handicap.
Memories are sweet and I'll cherish them forever, but it's 2018, and I have to say that I'm only halfheartedly sharing this year's Del Mar Summer Concert Series. I'd be an asshole if I didn't share shows that are so popular to San Diegans, but I feel like horse-racing will go the way of bullfighting in the next generation. And I'm not a vegan by any stretch, so perhaps that makes me a big fat hypocrite, but I feel like if I'm going to post a link to the concerts, I should also post a couple links to the very real and ugly side to horse racing.
If you do choose to attend the summer concerts, they're free with the cost of track admission ($6) so long as you arrive before the final race. Shows are standing room only and 18+.
2018 Del Mar Summer Concert Series:
7/20- Psychedelic Furs

7/27- Steel Pulse
8/3-Matisyahu
8/10- Aloe Blacc

Humphrey's Concerts By The Bay Announces 2018 Full Season
On Sunday, Humphrey's Concerts By The Bay announced their 2018 concert season. Shows that have already been on sale or sold out are in italics, the new announces are on sale Saturday, April 7th at 10am online or at the Humphrey's Box Office.

Summer Concerts In The Parks Line-Ups Roll Out For 2017
We pay a hefty sunshine tax in our rents, sales taxes, and general cost of living here in San Diego, but that's all the more reason to love the free events offered every summer. Besides amazing street fairs like Adams Avenue Street Fair, Festival of Arts in North Park, Fiesta del Sol, (to name just a few), we also get a ton of "Concerts In The Park". Many of San Diego's parks have already rolled out their summer series, and I'll do my best to update the one who haven't when they finally get around to it. Every year I fail to include these in my listings because they're a total pain in the ass to hunt down, but I'm an insomniac, so this year I've at least put this together. Note: Street Fairs and other annual events can be found here. Let me know if I missed anything!! (Find them all after the jump. Click the park links for parking, park rules, and any other special event info.)

Hollywood Bowl Announces 2010 Season
I know, I know, this is SAN DIEGO: Dialed In, not L.A. Dialed In, but my friends up at Filter sent the following my way and after having the good fortune of seeing Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem at the Bowl a few years back, I'm a HUGE fan of the venue (BYOB!!!). They put together stellar summer schedules that create experiences that just can't be duplicated anywhere.

June 25th: Grease Sing-A-Long
Bring your best poodle skirt & saddle shoes, biker jacket & shades for the pre-show parade, and your heartiest vocals for a frolicking ‘50s sing-along to Grease, for the first time on the Bowl’s giant screen, and hosted by Frenchy herself, Didi Conn!! Grease is the word! Buy Tickets
June 27th: Goldfrapp, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club Featuring Omara Portuondo and tUnE-yArDs

your calendars!
