Singer/Songwriter Night @ Soda Bar Thursday October 10, 2013

When it comes to musicians touring, some of the best shows are those featuring the heartfelt songs of singer-songwriters. Such is the case this Thursday at Soda Bar, where the Casbah is presenting a showcase of three talented musicians. First up will be local San Diego Music Award winner Jesse LaMonaca. His voice is one of the best you will hear anywhere, and his Americana flavored music will be a great way to start the evening. Next on the bill is Mark Charles Heidinger, who records and tours under the name Vandaveer. Hailing from the nation's capital, Vandaveer have released four folk rock albums, the latest being Oh Willie, Please... this year. Headlining artist for this intimate show will be Chicago based musician Joe Pug. This is music with folk, Americana and alt-country roots presented in an easy thoughtful manner. Joe will be playing songs from his two full length albums.

If you are undecided about what to do this Thursday, make the extra effort to go see a great night of music with some very talented musicians at the City Heights club. Tickets can be purchased here.

Download/Stream "The Lament of Tumbleweed Hawk" by Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels

In anticipation of Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels' CD release show on Saturday, Jesse decided to share "The Lament of Tumbleweed Hawk" with the world. For free. Download/stream the record below, then show your support on Saturday night.

The Lament of Tumbleweed Hawk by Jesse LaMonaca

SoundDiego Spotlight: Jesse LaMonaca

Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels spent much of 2011 working on their sophomore record, "The Lament Of Tumbleweed Hawk". Since I'm not a musician, I've never experienced the thrill and stress of recording a record, but I feel like I was very close to the process with Jesse and I feel so proud of my friend for putting his heart on his sleeve and writing an amazing record. I'm so looking forward to the CD release party this Saturday night at the Casbah. Check out his profile on NBC.

New Music: Jesse LaMonaca "The Deal"

Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels have spent many months putting together their second full length record, The Lament of Tumbleweed Hawk, which will be celebrate a release party on February 18 at the Casbah. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, when that record was being mixed and mastered, Jesse visited Brandon Conway in Nashville and they went to Blackbird Studio for some fun and ended up recording a couple songs while there.

This Thursday: SoundDiego Live At The Casbah

We're just a couple days away from this month's installment of SoundDiego Live! This Thursday, we're taking over the Casbah with free food from Gaglione Brothers, free beer from 7-8pm from Cold Spring Brewing Co., and a great lineup of music with Dead Feather Moon, The Get Down Automatic, and the winner of our Garage To Glory competition. And since that will all wrap up relatively early, Jesse LaMonaca will take the stage after Dead Feather Moon to keep the night going a little bit longer.

Check out this video of Dead Feather Moon from SoundSystem, then make sure you RSVP to the event here or just click on the flyer.

NYC so far

Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T

So I'm coming on my third day in New York. So far it has been a perfect vacation. I'm so used to taking trips to places even more chaotic than home- SXSW, Vegas, LA- that you'd think I'd come here and be psycho and jump into the chaos of this city. In reality, I've let all the people and noise merge into white noise and have felt nothing but calm as I traverse the city. It helps that I'm staying in my cousin's beautiful apartment on the upper west side, just a block from Central Park, but it also helps that I don't have to do anything while I'm here. Other than 5 hours of web stuff yesterday, I'm actually on vacation.

Upon my Monday night arrival, we decided to lay low. Other than some slices at Francesco's and some wine for home, we didn't do much of anything, which was just fine by me.

On Tuesday I woke up crazy early which is a bit opposite of what is supposed to happen, but I suppose it helps that I never really sleep normal hours anywhere. I did some work, walked my cousin to her train. Then grabbed breakfast at Lansky's, this kosher diner near her house. I walked back through the park, lounged and worked back at the pad, then ventured to meet Joanna, a publicist that I've been working with for years now, for lunch. I was really early which gave me some time to shop. Despite all my whining about being poor, there were a couple things I needed...some good bras and some sneakers with traction (since I almost ate shit 3 separate times when it started raining). We had lunch at Markt which served Belgian food and had a menu resembling Bleu Boheme. We talked D/Wolves, TV Girl, Transfer and others and then she was back to work. I wandered in the rain until connecting with Inge from Girlie Action and decided to drop by their offices, too, meeting the team responsible for much of my email, but also much of my tasty music. We chatted for a bit, I got some new music (including the new MMJ!!!) and then went back to the fashion district to meet my cousin. We relaxed a bit before grabbing an amazing Spanish dinner at Cafe Rondo. Beef empanadas, lamb albondigas, tortilla espanola, gambas al ajillo, and shared a buterrflied filet with chimichurri. Delicioso.

It was getting late so we went home and watched The Voice until she called it a night and I left to see what trouble I could find. My cousin lets me do what I want, but I was under orders not to take the subway after 10pm, so I found a small bar, had a beer and then got a call from Mike Down. He's consulting for a bar called Von, so I hopped in a cab and met him there. I also met his friend who happens to be a tattoo artist. I think I might have to get some ink to commemorate this trip.

Anyway, I think I'll conclude my story here. Let's just say it went something like smithwick's, jameson, smithwick's, jameson, jameson, jammmmeeeesooooonnnn, jamsn, and I woke up in Brooklyn. No tattoo, but breakfast delivery is the best thing ever. ;)

Now I'm heading south to meet up with Jesse. He's already hard to nail down plans with, but apparently he's already spent half the day cocktailing so though we were supposed to spend the day in Brooklyn, we still have yet to meet up. Nima is on his way to the city, too. I just hope my liver can withstand the night ahead.

Jesse LaMonaca's Left Coast Sunshine Tour- Fall 2010

Late last summer, Jesse LaMonaca, at the suggestion of friends and family, decided to take trip to Australia. He booked ten shows and with the help of those close to him and a Canon T2i camera, he was off to the Other Side of the World. Since his return and in between his crazy busy performance schedule, he's been working with Aaron Browning of Flicker Fusion Video to compile some video diary webisodes of the adventure. The videos are FINALLY done, as is the live video shoot of the song that came from that journey, "Other Side of The World" at Lost Ark Studios in Pacific Beach.

"Other Side of the World" Live at Lost Ark Studios:

All three episodes are embedded after the jump. Go to JesseLaMonaca.com for more info, videos, photos, and free downloads of four tracks from the Dirty Thursday podcast he did about a month ago.

Jesse LaMonaca "Holding Onto Nothing"

I feel like I was born to live in this age of social networking. Tweeting and facebooking and blogging all come pretty natural to me, and I'm almost always available one way or another. But for some people, the self-promotion feels contrived and takes a lot of effort to get into the groove of staring at a phone instead of enjoying "real life". I've been encouraging several bands to step up their social media, so I'm happy to say that Jesse LaMonaca stepped up his game today and made a quick little video of a new song he finished this week.

On Sunday night, I'm taking over the airwaves at FM 94/9 for the Coup d'Etat from 6-7pm. I'll be playing new stuff from Josh Damigo, The Heavy Guilt, and Jesse will be with me to play a song or two live on the air. Maybe I can convince him to do this new one so be sure to tune in.

My Friends Done Good: Josh Damigo, Jesse LaMonaca, The Heavy Guilt, D/Wolves

As my life has evolved from media assistant to media buyer to media planner to unemployed to this around the clock barely-paying-rent music lifestyle, my refusal to get a day job has forced me to wear many hats...blogger, booker, social media manager, consultant, stage producer, merch girl, door girl, band manager, band momager, publicist, and people connectress. That last one is my favorite...putting people in touch with each other to do good things for San Diego music (though I still haven't figured out how to make that one pay the bills). While all of these things leave me broke as hell, I get to share the pride when my friends do well. Here's a little roundup of some exciting things happening with Josh Damigo, Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels, The Heavy Guilt, and D/Wolves.

D/Wolves recently recorded their EP at Black Box with Mario Quintero. Today they were featured on This Music Doesn't Suck based out of Brooklyn. They were also featured on the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang e-zine last week, getting two "Agents' Number One Bullets" for the week. I posted about our trip to Vegas last week and hopefully they can do some more out of town gigs soon.

Jesse LaMonaca and The Dime Novels have been busy in the studio working on a recording and video for their song "Other Side of The World". He invited guests to watch the process and it was a pretty great night in Pacific Beach. The video is still being edited but will be available soon and then Jesse's got some decisions to make about recording a new record or EP or live album before he heads to the East Coast for an as yet undetermined amount of time. Crossroads, I suppose you could say. For now, along with Jesse's bar gigs all over town, I'm happy to say he's opening for The Builders and The Butchers at the Casbah on Tuesday and will be playing with my twitter friends The Morgansterns on Wednesday at the Redwood Bar in Los Angeles. Hope there's room in the car for me for that one! He also went to Dirty Boulevard Recording Studio and recorded some songs for their podcast. Check it out here (Use the full Podcast download, as I couldn't get the stream to work past 3 minutes).

The Heavy Guilt have recorded a new record and though I only have my paws on an unmastered version, it is AMAZING. Plans are in the works for a big summer release party, but in the meantime, check them out in 944's Music Issue (go to page 60-61) as one of "San Diego's Bands To Know If You Don't Know". They're playing tonight at Winston's if you wanna gimme a ride :)

Last but certainly not least, Josh Damigo has been ALL OVER the place since he's moved to L.A. and it is so exciting to see someone so deserving getting so much love. Whether it's the San Diego Troubadour cover story, Wechter guitars bragging about him or SESAC calling him a "Social Media Powerhouse" or some of the killer gigs he's been getting all over Southern California, I've never seen anyone so aggressively yet gracefully steward their own career.

I'm happy to say that all four bands will be performing on the Main Stage of the North Park Festival of Arts. This is a free all ages event on May 15. There's also a Bar Pink/FM 94/9 stage in the ticketed Craft Beer Block, so I suggest you buy tickets for that portion here.

Keep rockin, San Diego. You make a broke and tired blogger proud.

Things To Do In San Diego: NBCSanDiego Party, 3.10.2011

I told you there's a bunch of stuff going on this Thursday, so maybe you can find a way to do more things in one night than usual.

NBCSanDiego is "rebranding" which means they changed some logos, updated their website and lost the peacock for all intents and purposes. Who really cares what it means, if it means a free party? Come see The Tree Ring, Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels, and John Meeks in the W Living Room. Click the flier for more info.

Tonight: Rocky Votolato, Laura Gibson, Jesse LaMonaca at the Casbah

I'm absolutely thrilled about tonight's Casbah lineup with Rocky Votolato, Laura Gibson, and Jesse LaMonaca. In case you're new to this site, Rocky has been one of my favorite songwriters for eons and every performance is nothing short of amazing, whether he's with a full band, or, like tonight, delivering a solo performance. I'm happy that over the years I can call Rocky a friend and glad that he's persevered all of these years. If you haven't picked up True Devotion, I'd recommend bringing some cash to the show because I'm pretty sure he'll have it on vinyl which is obviously the best way to hear it, preferably in a quiet dimly lit room. The show is not only Plan A in CityBeat, but it's the only plan, and for good reason. Be sure to check out the great article about Jesse, also in this week's issue, though contrary to the article, he will just be performing with Brandon Conway on guitar. His birthday is on Sunday, so be sure to wish him well, and get there early to catch his 9pm set.

This is video a playlist I shot of Rocky doing a house show last summer (awkwardly close, I'll admit). Click the right and left arrows to navigate.

All In A Day's Work

What an incredible day I had. It started with our weekly Casbah meeting, so I have a whole bunch of shows to update this week. Be sure to check the site for the "recently added" shows in the pulldown menu. I'll try to update by Friday.

What you should know, however, is that the Lucero show on February 20 is about 50 tickets shy of sellout, so don't wait to buy tickets. They always sell the place out, and with Blackout Party and Low Volts on the bill, it's gonna be a helluva time. You might wanna take a personal day on the 21st if you don't already get it off for Presidents' Day.

From the Casbah, Mr. Pyles and I headed to OB and had lunch with Tom from Dynamite Walls at South Coast. Turns out I'm probably heading to SXSW with the band for my first time ever, so expect lots of blogging from the road. If you wanna help sponsor my trip, click here to donate any amount. Shameless, I know, but you know how you always tell me "Hey, Rosey...I wanna buy you a drink"? Well, this is way better for my liver. I will tweet, facebook, and blog nice things about you. I promise.

From South Coast, we walked over to Hodad's, where Cage the Elephant was playing a free acoustic show. Initially we were going to try and maneuver our way in, with the owner even telling us we could get in through the back door, but it ended up being more fun hanging out with people and listening from outside. We were joined by Jesse LaMonaca, and after our trip to NAMM, I guess now's as good a time as any to mention that I will be managing Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels. We have some exciting stuff down the pipeline and you better believe I will be gushing about it all here as I do with all of the things that I love, whether its my family, my friends, or fantastic new music. (Not to worry, Ladies. This is purely professional and Jesse is still on the market, just to be clear.) Jesse's site is being rebuilt at the moment, but you can check it out in its current form here. I'll share all of his bookings as we go along, but you can come see him tonight at West Coast Tavern, and plan on seeing him open for Rocky Votolato on February 24. We'll announce more when we can.

At Hodad's, we ran into Omar, who took us on a crazy adventure through OB and took us to the top of a hill to some lookout point. The dude is seriously one of the funniest people I've ever met, and though it was just a 30 minute or so detour, it was hilarious.

We headed back to the pier to catch that lovely sunset above and went our separate ways. The night didn't end, however, and Tommy picked me up on his motorcycle and we went to a really fun show at the House of Blues with The Get Up Kids, Steel Train, and River City Extension (not to be confused with locals River City) who totally blew me away. I'll post those pictures in a separate post as well as posting them on SoundDiego.com later this week or next.

So yeah. I might be broke as a joke and I might be tethered to the internet 22 hours a day, but sometimes things are just really, really good. I'm excited about what the year holds and as always, I'll be here sharing it with all of you.

NAMM 2011: Jesse LaMonaca at Luna Guitars

Sometimes life is about being in the right place at the right time. When I met some guys at a True Blood party at Comic-con 2009, a friendship was sprung that has lasted over time and some of my best times ever are from hanging with them at the Con. Last year they told me about a company they were developing and over time they wanted to pick my brain about some things. I had forgotten about the conversation until last week, when a group of us were at the Everest show at the Belly Up. We had a cocktail party before and had try to convince Jesse LaMonaca to come to the show; as it turned out his buddy had an extra ticket. We were all enjoying the show when I got a text from Jared asking if I wanted to come to NAMM and I was welcome to bring a guest. By the time the night was through, plans solidified, and by Friday morning, Jesse and I were driving up to Anaheim. After a few hours at the convention center, I stepped outside and got to chatting with a man who turned out to be an artist rep for Luna Guitars. I shared what I do with him and mentioned Jesse. Long story short, we were asked to come back by and take a look at some guitars, which turned into an impromptu performance at the Luna booth. Jesse and Brandon played two songs. Here is one of them.

A Very SD:Dialed In Christmas

I know there are a lot of holiday orphans out there. Maybe your family lives elsewhere, maybe your family is crazy (who's isn't?), maybe you don't have family to go home to...My family is spending a few days at Harrah's Rincon Casino but since I can't abandon my work or my dog, I won't be back with them until Christmas. Last week, when Jesse LaMonaca played West Coast Tavern, I was blown away by his talent and I asked if he wanted to play again this week and when he said playing would be better than being alone for the holidays, it got me thinking about how many people experience the same sentiment during the holidays.

That said, let's celebrate the warm fuzzies of the holiday and forget the stressful, crazy, and sometimes lonely season. Thursday night, join me at West Coast Tavern for some good times, good food, good friends and strong drinks as Josh Damigo and Jesse LaMonaca play some tunes. It's free, starts at 10, and is the best way I know to kick of the holiday weekend. I'll bring the mistletoe.
