Reading & Watching: January 2020

Mermaid or pinniped?
Things have been super crazy busy around my household lately. Nova's soccer is back, or at least tryouts, so I got to go to La Jolla Cove this week on one evening and then got to catch up with my old pal and boss on another. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with keeping up with work because I guess I got used to the slow December. It hasn't really left me with much time to read, but lots of time to watch a lot while I work through the wee hours of the morning. I did read Maria Semple's other book, Today Will Be Different, and while I power through her writing, the resolution just did not in any way resonate with me. So I've been on the hunt for a good book. I had the audio book of The Nickel Boys, which I was really enjoying, but I just didn't get to listen to it fast enough before it was due. I like to keep a book to read and an audiobook checked out simultaneously, but sometimes it doesn't happen that way. So while I haven't read a new book in awhile, I've been kind of obsessed with the GRAMMY controversy (no, I didn't watch the broadcast) and the clapback on American Dirt. (lots of links and more after the jump.)

Things I'm Reading & Watching: I'm With The Band: Nasty Cherry | The Testaments | One Night In Georgia | Whisper Network |

A Very Old Picture of KITTEN
I've been working through Christmas movies, so I have another post in the works for those, but I'm killing time this morning so I thought I'd stop lollygagging on all my draft posts. So there are a few new things I've watched and read and you can read about them after the jump.

Things I'm Reading & Watching: Katie Hill's Amazing Parting Words | Looking For Alaska | Wired | CityLab

I only knew about The Testaments, Margaret Atwood's long awaited sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, about a week before its release, but the second I heard about it, I reserved any format I could on every library I could (San Diego, Chula Vista, San Diego County) and within a week or so of release, I already had the book from one library and the audio CDs from another. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to the book at all...it was the same time the Casbah was transitioning from Ticketfly to Eventbrite and I was buried in work, but I've now got the audio recording and am listening as I work, as I clean, as I lay around being sick. Darren is listening, too. So today, I was watching this amazing speech by Katie Hill, and he walks into the room. And granted, he couldn't really make sense of what was being said but says, "Oh, you must've caught up to me and passed me, I haven't heard that part yet." I don't know if I should laugh or cry. That he could hear the words of Katie Hill, and mix them with The Testaments says so much about where we are. Yesterday he asked me if Nova was too young to experience "toxic masculinity" and I said it's something females experience from the time we're born, then proceeded to give examples. Listen to Katie. It's 8 minutes long. Take the time. And let's at least celebrate today's Impeachment vote victory. Still such a long way to go.

Things I'm Reading & Watching: BRDGS | Lefsetz | AB5 | The Laundromat | Any One of Us and more

"If your vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t fight so hard to block it" -SPLC

BRDGS is an artist from Toronto, but he wrote a song called "San Diego," and I kinda love it.

So another couple weeks have passed and I've made more notes on things I read in my daily perusal of the interwebs and daily influx of countless emails. These are things that I find interesting, infuriating, entertaining, or educational. Full clips/list/links are after the jump.

Things I'm Reading & Watching: Offspring | The Keepers | The Great Depresh | Bad Blood | Mrs. Everything | The Kettering Incident | The Widow

Elephant at San Diego Zoo During HalGLOWeen
I've once again been stockpiling links because, as I mentioned, I'm trying to wean myself off of Facebook, or at least commenting on news items there. And not that it's any better, but sometimes I can't stop scrolling through Twitter, which brings me to my first link. (after the jump)

What I'm Reading & Watching

What did the cormorant say to the sea lion??

I have had a hell of a weekend. We went snorkeling, chilled out, hung out for my dad's 71st birthday, and I thought it would be low-key and I would get ahead of email and social posts for work and get caught up when, BAM!, I got a FINAL NOTICE from Photobucket that they're switching to a subscription based model and all photos over their free limit would be deleted by Monday, September 9th. I wouldn't have noticed, to be honest, because my original account is linked to an email that is just chock-full of spam which I never read. So I missed months of such notifications. However, I had a second account affected, too, which is when I took it seriously. More of my woe-is-me  tale after the jump (and actual stuff I'm reading and watching)

Watch: The Black Key's Trailer for "MasterCourse" (A Funny Or Die Production)

This weekend was full of bad news and it just keeps going from bad to worse on a national level, so this mockumentary/Master Class parody with The Black Keys made me laugh and it's worth a share. Don't forget The Black Keys will be back in San Diego on November 17th at Pechanga Arena with Modest Mouse and Shannon & the Clams.

And while we're talking Funny or Die, check out the short web series, Under A Rock with Tig Notaro if you haven't already. I know I haven't done a proper read/watch post but it's really because I got sucked into the vapid world of The Hills and did a full 6 season rewatch to get to The Hills: New Beginnings. And I'm reading a book but I'm not in love with it, so I've just been kinda stuck reading a few pages at a time before my eyes fall shut. But I'll get back to it.

Rosey's Read & Watch List: Gay Of Thrones | Special | Huge In France | Kim's Convenience | If Beale Street Could Talk

I started this list last immediately after my last read/watch post on 4/14, so I'm gonna post now because I waited, and now I have way too much to add now so I'm due for a fresh post. All after the jump.

Rosey's Read and Watch List 3.29.2019

I start these little lists and stockpiles and then it's already two weeks later and the world has already moved on, so I'm posting even though some of it is already barely relevant anymore. Still, catch my read and watch list after the jump. I've got a couple more superbloom posts to get up, but in the meantime, here's a simple pic from just by the MTRP Visitor's Center.

Rosey's Read & Watch List

Last weekend, we checked out the San Diego Bird Festival, presented by the Audobon. The wild parrots made an appearance and made me envious of the multiple-thousand dollar lenses being showcased just inside the exhibit hall. Here are some of the things I've been watching and reading the past ccouple weeks, after the jump.

What I'm Watching: If You're Not In The Obit, Eat Breakfast | Downward Dog | Radio Dreams

I got a really positive response to my last post about my indulgent television habits, so I've decided to do another post. The main seasons of shows seem to be on pause until summer series drop or the full schedules return in fall, so there's this horrible glut of game and talent shows right now which maybe aren't so bad if you fast forward all the bullshit backstories with DVR, but I don't have that function so I just have to dig deeper. Still, there were a few things that caught my attention in the past couple weeks (besides San Diego City TV of course...some of those Council meetings have been pure comedy fire!) Check it after the jump.
