Jeff's Weekly Pick: Manuok @ Wonderhaus Building August 5, 2010

Scott Mercado is a very creative and talented guy. He designs websites and can literally perform all the instruments on his albums. That in and of itself is no small feat. In addition, his songs are so emotionally charged that it is easy to see the passion he has for his trade. The band is called Manuok and will be performing at the Wonderhaus Building downtown this Thursday. I have not personally seen the performance space, but I have heard it suits intimate shows quite nicely. Manuok is releasing their latest full length, The Old Horse, this week. Having seen Scott play drums, keyboards and guitar in his band and other bands as well, it will be fun to see him playing lead guitar this time around. Get out of the house and go see one of San Diego’s best kept secrets this Thursday. For directions and general info, click here.

Overdue Recap: Fruit Bats, Sera Cahoone, Manuok @ Casbah, 2.2.09

I'm going to be honest and say that I am so behind in posting photos that when I was looking through what needed to be posted, it took a while to jar my memory about the show. (Well, except for Scott of Manuok, of course.) Not because I don't like Fruit Bats or Sera Cahoone, and no, I wasn't wasted, but I have been to so many shows in 2009 already that they kinda blur together. Which is really sad, if you think about it, because there have been so many great shows. Anyway, apologies for lagging on the posts, I maxed out on my photobucket account and waffled about what to do with future photo uploads. I am sticking with PB for now, but hope to move hosting soon. Apologies again for the large format; I thought I was uploading them smaller. That is neither here nor there- on to the photos...

So Manuok started off the night. After falling in love with the latest release, I was really hoping to video some of the set, but the lights have been quite unforgiving at the Casbah of late, especially for music like Scott's, so here is a token photo, and all I can say is go see them when you can because they don't play often enough.

Sera Cahoone followed Manuok with sweet, twangy songs that were enhanced by my favorite alt-country instrumentation...some lap steel (or was it pedal steel? I never know), banjo, acoustic guitar and harmonica as well as the standard percussion.

Fruit Bats headlined the night and delivered a solid performance. I couldn't get over how much the singer reminded me of David Vandervelde in appearance. Though it wasn't my first time seeing the band, it had certainly been a while (2 years?). Anyway, it was more alt country sweetness and made for a great Anti-Monday.

Overdue Recap: Little Dragon, Manuok, Anomie Belle @ Beauty Bar

Yes, it is December and I'm a couple weeks behind in show postings. So last I left off, I posted about Angus & Julia Stone at The Loft. The next night I thought Justin from OAKS was DJing at the Ken so I walked over with my laptop, instead I walked in on Christopher singing Karaoke to Missy and decided I would stick around through the mostly terrible renditions of mostly 90s crap. It was fun oddly enough, and my wi-fi was working so I cleaned up my e-mail inboxes while hanging out.

On Wednesday, I wrote a lot and didn't go out. I guess you could say I've been nesting at home more than I have in the past.

Come Thursday, I had plans to meet my friend Jack at the House of Blues for Happy Hour. While I've had my issues with HoB as a venue, I have to say I've really grown to love the bartenders there and their happy hour is hard to beat. $2 domestic pints, $3 imports, $3 wells, and $4 wine, plus I can enjoy the catfish nuggets and fries for under $5. We hung out for a while and met a Ukranian guy who was visiting from South Carolina. When happy hour ended, I convinced them to check out Chee Chee until Jack left and Dmitry and I ended up going to Beauty Bar for Little Dragon, Manuok, and Anomie Belle. It was a great show and we had a blast and met some cool peeps (pictured below). The lights there are not my friend, but I did take some pics and video. Read the rest if you 'keep on reading'.

The night started with Anomie Belle. I knew nothing about the band going in, but their sweet 3 part all girl vocal harmonies were a great way to start the night. I vaguely remember thinking it reminded me of early Zero 7 material.

Manuok was celebrating their CD release to a very receptive crowd. I geel like this one of the most upbeat performances I'd seen of Scott and crew, and he was smiling throughout the show, which was reciprocated by sheer enjoyment from the enthusiastic crowd.

Closing out the night was Little Dragon. Kristian turned me on to Little Dragon a while back and I thought they were ok, but took his recommendation with a grain of salt because (a) he insanely loves female fronted groups (b)he believes Sweden has the hottest music scene at the moment. I'd also seen Yukimi when she attempted to play melodica with Jose Gonzalez and in my opinion, jacked up his songs. (Ask Daye or read about it here.) But I have to say, I was definitely into this performance. Yukimi dances barefoot all over the stage, spazzing out with some fusion of gypsy freak out ballet. You couldn't take your eyes off of her. There's some soul undertones to her music that make me think there are probably dance remixes of her music bumping in night clubs in big cities across the country, and if there aren't there should be.

And though you really can't see anything in this video, you can definitely hear her sultry voice.

So, all in all I have to say it was a good day- saw old friends, met some new ones, and saw three great bands. No complaints here. For more videos, go to my YouTube page.

Overdue Recap: Drew Andrews & Manuok @ Beauty Bar, 7.24.08

After seeing Drew Andrews with Rocky on Wednesday, I was looking forward to catching him again on Thursday with a full band and a more local crowd. I didn't think the show would start quite so early, however, so I missed the two openers, but arrived in time to catch Manuok.

Last time I saw them, I was selling merch at the Belly Up, so I didn't really get to take in the show so this time I was happy to be able to enjoy the whole set. I've been really enjoying shows there with the new lights and Sarah always takes care of me. Manuok are an incredible band. Check my YouTube videos for video of the night, but if you get the chance to see Scott and crew live, make sure to do so. There's just incredible depth of talent with every person in the band and the vocals will break your heart.

Drew Andrews is one of the nicest guys in San Diego music, so its no surprise that a lot of his friends came out to see the show. He was in a good mood, I think having the full band, while they're all tight musicians, meant a looser feeling show, perhaps less pressure and no bar chatter to compete with. Whatever it was, Drew played a long set and didn't shy from talking about his record being put out by Minty Fresh this fall, which I'm certainly looking forward to hearing. I posted video of a couple songs before, so check them out if you haven't already.

Being that Beauty Bar shows end early, we hung out for a little bit once the set finished, but then I headed to U-31 with Jake to catch a little bit of Shark Attack, but mostly we just hung out with Erika until closing time and put the seal on another fun night in San Diego.

Drew Andrews & Manuok At Beauty Bar, 7.25.08

This week was another one where I went out every single night so again I'm backed up with posts and pictures, but I've seen some really great shows this week. Last night I caught Manuok and Drew Andrews at the Beauty Bar, so I decided to capture some video. And then my battery died. Such a rookie mistake. But anyway, here's the video I did capture:
