The year has nearly come to an end, literally and also when it comes to looking for touring bands to visit San Diego. This happens each and every year but has an upside since local bands bridge the gap until the tour cycle renews itself in 2013. Three of San Diego's best will be gathering this Friday at the Belly Up in Solana Beach. Headlining will be none other than North County's alt-rockers Dead Feather Moon. This band has been gathering steam since its formation in 2007, led by guitarist/vocalist Justen Berge. Their debut full length album, Dark Sun, won the award for Best Alternative Album this year at the San Diego Music Awards.
The middle band performing will be The Heavy Guilt, currently in the studio preparing their third album, due to be released next spring. Tireless writer/member Al Howard formed the band as a way of expressing his passion for life and the city in which he lives. All six members form a cohesive unit of folk driven rock and roll. Their performances are always inspiring.
Opening the "locals only" night are Carlsbad based rockers Trouble In the Wind, led by vocalist Robby Gira. This band has a loyal and passionate following, and this becomes clearly evident once one sees them perform. The young quartet recently took home the prize for Musicpalooza's Best Musical Talent at the San Diego County Fair. A great way to start the night, if I do say so myself. There is no better way to support local music than at a show featuring three of San Diego's finest bands.

Once again, Happy 6th Anniversary to SDDialedIn and we all owe a debt of gratitude to Rosey and her tireless efforts that benefit our local San Diego music scene. It is a rare occasion that I'm at a show where I've never seen or shot any of the bands on the bill, but I'm certainly glad I had the fortune to see these bands that turned out to be a super talented lineup. Tonight's The Night: SD:Dialed In 6 Year Anniversary at the Casbah
I am so excited for tonight! In fact, it was one of those nights where I was up all night working just so I wouldn't have the cloud of email hovering over my head. Instead of sleeping this morning, Darren and I went on a nice bike ride to test out the Biria I'm likely going to purchase. San Diego: Dialed In Six Year Anniversary!!
It was on this day in 2006 that I was sitting in my cubicle at an architecture firm and a lightbulb went off...maybe I should stop writing my diary online and I should focus on life in San Diego minus the details of who I was dating and how hungover I was from the night before. I launched San Diego: Dialed In on a fluke, no real goal in mind, just that I wanted to be personal without divulging every private detail. Of course, nowadays I live out loud anyway, so you still get my diary posts, my constant barrage of tweets and foursquare check-ins and facebook details, but hopefully this site has evolved enough to be informative and helpful for locals and tourists alike to get a feel for the amazing city we live in. I certainly never thought this would become a job or launch my other duties, among them publicity for the Casbah, writing for SoundDiego, booking, managing, band PR, being a member of the nominating committee for the San Diego Music Academy, and many other moving parts that keep me plenty busy. There are now over a dozen volunteer contributors to this site and to all of them, I am eternally grateful for all of their tireless efforts.
Naturally, the best way to celebrate is with a show at the Casbah, my home away from home.

Eric Nordby (of Norman)/ Trouble In The Wind @ Habitat House- 02.13.11
Last Sunday night, the Habitat House opened up its doors once again for an evening of unplugged excellence featuring (from Oregon-based band Norman) Eric Nordby and guests performers from The Tree Ring, and Carlsbad's own Trouble In The Wind. Continue reading after the jump...
My inaugural trip to Habitat House started with a quick stroll over to the Golden Hill residence where I was greeted by a handful of like-minded individuals, tall boys in hand, waiting on the porch for the music to start. Not really knowing how the whole system operated over there, I walked up and introduced myself to the first person I saw (who happened to be Trouble In The Wind's frontman Robby Gira). After getting the gist of the operation, I walked up the street to grab a couple beers at the local convenience store and went back to find a spot on the couch. By the time Eric was ready to go, a sizeable crowd of 30+ had settled in to the various couches/ chairs/ floor space available in the living room. Eric, sitting in a chair, accompanied by only his acoustic guitar, offered a couple solo songs before being joined by a few members of The Tree ring and their various instruments. His set of folksy singer-songwriter tunes set the tone nicely for Trouble In The Wind's more uptempo 'outlaw country' act. By the time they started the living room had filled to (seated) capacity. Lit pleasantly by a lone table lamp in the middle of the floor, Robby was joined by bassist Trevor Mulvey, drummer Larry Doran and multi-instrumentalist Kyle Merritt. Their pared down acoustic set up fit the space perfectly. Over the next hour or so their tempo built and ebbed as they progressed through the accordion- and banjo- laced set. When they finished, the crowd greeted them with a round of applause and multiple requests for one more song, which they gladly provided. When all was said and done, it was 10 pm, which for a Sunday night is all you can ask for (and I'm sure the neighbors were pretty happy too).
The Habitat House is truly a unique experience in San Diego's music scene. They keep the somewhat infrequent shows under relatively tight wraps (for good reason- it is a house after all), but if you have the wherewithall to make your way over there, definitely go check it out.

Photos: North Park Festival of Arts 2010
I mentioned earlier this week that I was absolutely pleased with the North Park Festival of Arts. Though I had to get up earlier than I'm used to, the day was fun and the May Gray kept the day bearable. It was my first go at stage production and though I thought I'd be stressed out, when you have great bands that show up on time, an amazing sound man Sean, a great MC like Tim Pyles, and the help from a couple off duty SDPD officers helping out with our loading area parking, the day went incredibly smooth. From the opening set by The Elephant Project all the way to the final notes from Wirepony, and the sets by Trouble In The Wind, Martian Horses, Josh Damigo and Republic of Letters in between, I couldn't have asked for a better day. Thanks to all the participating bands, to all the people who came to the festival, and to my family for bringing my nieces to hang out for the afternoon.
