ABC Amplifies Wavves

I hate reposting something I've seen on Hipster Runoff, especially two days after the fact, but since I've been talking so much about the Shepard Fairey art pieces, and since Wavves is going to be the featured band at next month's TNT that celebrates the Viva La Revolucion show, I thought I'd share this video clip.

Shepard Fairey Readies Local Installation

A while ago I told you about the big upcoming TNT at the Museum of Contemporary Art that will have Wavves performing and there would be live DJ sets.

TNT celebrates the new street art exhibition, Viva la Revolucion: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape, a multifaceted show that features works -- both in the Museum’s galleries as well as at public sites throughout downtown San Diego -- by 20 international artists, including Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Barry McGee, Dr. Lakra, Invader, Swoon, and more.

Enjoy live music by WAVVES, DJs, art-making activities, and more
Today Shepard Fairey was out preparing one of the public sites. He wasn't there when I popped by, but let me just say that San Diego would be a whole lot cooler if more of our blank walls were given the OBEY treatment. I cannot wait to see what Banksy's got up his sleeves. This is on the side of the Hillcrest Urban Outfitters (the irony there is almost too much to bear), in the former Corvette Diner building. We grabbed lunch after taking some photos, and as we drove out of Hillcrest, it appeared one more section was being worked on. As @PaulaLuna tweeted, photos don't do this justice, so definitely go see it for yourself, but here are some pieces of the wall.

While this blog is focused primarily on live music, occasionally there are great events that fall in other categories that still deserve some mention. Tomorrow (Thursday 8/28) there are several film and arts events around town.

The last item at Balboa Park is the monthly series
"Tower After Hours" at the San Diego Museum of Man. This month, Germany is the country of choice that will be showcasing their booze, dancing and music. From their site:

Experience Tower After Hours, our ongoing series celebrating San Diego’s unique and vibrant ethnic mix.

Don't miss this pre-Oktoberfest party at the San Diego Museum of Man! Join the German American Societies of San Diego, the La Jolla Brew House, and The House of Germany as they kick off the Oktoberfest season with a celebration of Germany during Tower After Hours on Thursday, August 28. Enjoy an array of regional German food and drinks as you experience this showcase of German culture. We are featuring the Edelweiss Band with dance performances by the Balboa Park Dancers. Enjoy the tantalizing tastes of German food and the vibrant experience of German music and dance during this festive event."

Up the coast a little ways at the La Jolla branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD-LJ) they are screening the sixth annual
alt.pictureshows, where Sherwood Auditorium and portions of MCASD’s galleries are transformed into San Diego’s premier short-film showcase and the definitive experiment in “physical channel surfing.”

As numerous short films screen on a loop throughout the Museum during the one-night festival, MCASD becomes a movie funhouse featuring a cross-section of innovative cinematic works by filmmakers from around the globe. This year’s featured filmmakers include David Lynch, Nash Edgerton, Ari Gold, Ken Wardrop, Rob Meyer, Mads Matthieson, Justin Nowell, David Michod, Amanda Micheli, and Isabel Vega, among others. The themes of this year’s alt.pictureshows ricochet from dark comedy, twisted romance, and offbeat drama to personal, experimental documentaries. Please note: Many of the program’s short films have adult content and have not been rated.

With all of these options, it's hard to decide where to go. Also you could just head down to Kava Lounge for this month's "Sight & Sounds" event featuring CircaNow, AcroYoga performers, Slapjazz & Spoonful, hosted by Trev from the X1FM Gun Show, free hors d'oeuvres and wine.

Kenan Bell @ Jivewire- Casbah 7.3.08

After my half day at work I took my recycling to National City which was a total waste of time, then returned home, cleaned, and took a nice long nap before heading downtown. I went to the House of Blues to hit happy hour, but unfortunately it was closed because they were preparing for Club Massive, so instead I grabbed a couple slices at City Pizzeria, which I still prefer over Bronx, then made my way to TNT.

I mentioned briefly before, but again I'll say I might have to rethink my future attendance at TNT. It was one of the coolest cultural events San Diego had going and our lovely police department put the shackles on it. No more bar in the quad of One America Plaza. There was something cool about being outside in San Diego's nighttime air, sipping cocktails while doing interactive art activities and watching some of San Diego's best bands. Now, all bars are relegated to the upstairs balcony of the museum, and on this night, the new part of the museum was closed to change the installations. Double bummer, if you ask me. I wasn't really diggin' the night. The organizers were pretty bummed, too. Hopefully the city reconsiders.

Anyway, we left when the second band started and made our way to Jivewire. My homie Jason plays keys in the band, and I missed the last couple of times they played. Jason hooked me up with a shirt and then we made our way in to catch their performance. I'm not particularly into hip hop, but I do appreciate a good lyricist with great flow, especially when backed by a full band. I really, really liked their performance. And, as I mentioned, when they asked the crowd to join onstage, I jumped in, and Jason had me play the keys, which I don't play at all, but it was pretty simple and just 2 keys. I can pretty safely say it was my first and last time onstage, I much prefer being in the crowd.

The night was awesome, but I already wrote about that and the rest of the weekend. For Jason, more pics after the jump.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation" outdoor movie @ MCASD La Jolla Thursday 7/10/08

For years I've heard rumors of this film. The film was a shot for shot remake of the Raiders of the Lost Ark movie done by three kids in the 80's with a non existing budget using only home video camcorders and their ingenuity with makeup / sets / neighborhood friends / etc. Now, after all these years, it's going to be screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla for free tomorrow night. Some of the film makers will be there for a Q&A.

Free (plus they have free ice cream and popcorn...)

"MCASD invites you to bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the Museum's free third annual Parking Lot Pictures. As moviegoers flock to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at multiplexes, MCASD hosts the San Diego premiere of Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation against the oceanfront backdrop of MCASD La Jolla's parking lot.
Back in 1982, the then-12-year-old filmmakers Chris Strompolos, Eric Zala and Jayson Lamb made this shot-by-shot remake of Steven Spielberg's 1981 classic adventure film, filming in their Mississippi neighborhood.

Shot for $7,000 over a period of seven years and rarely screened for the public, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation might just be one of the most heartfelt, no-budget homages to movie love ever made. Coincidentally, Paramount Pictures is currently developing a feature
film with screenwriter Dan Clowes (of Ghost World fame) to tell their story on the big screen. MCASD invites you to enjoy these movie fans' labor of love that dares to ask what it might feel like to be Indiana Jones. Strompolos and Zala will introduce the film and participate in
a post-screening Q&A session."

Here is also the first 10 minutes of the film to give you a taste:
