Photos of NPMT, Day 1, 8/13/10

I spent the first night of the North Park Music Thing bouncing between Soda Bar and the new club, Eleven, where our very own Rosey held her SD:DialedIn showcase. Here's some highlights:

Things To Do In San Diego: August 13-14, 2010

What a weekend...For the archived listings, click keep on reading...

North Park Music Thing is finally upon us! A few things about the listings...I've listed the bands in order of last band to first for each venue. The shows that are part of the festival have NPMT before the listing. This means if you have the two-day wristband ($35) or single day wristband ($20), you have access to these shows. If you want to attend just one showcase, the NPMT venues will be charging $10 which also benefits the San Diego Music Foundation. I've corrected the bands to the best of my knowledge, and you can see set times at the NPMT website (though some of the listings I know are still incorrect, including my stage at Eleven.) If you are a promoter, bar owner, or performing band and know any of these listings to be incorrect, please let me know and I will do my best to update the listings. For the record, Sunset Temple, Claire de Lune, and Lestat's are all age NPMT venues. The rest are 21+.

This weekend is also ASR downtown and the Cool as Ever tech event at the racetrack, so there's no excuse to stay home this weekend...just don't blow your wad because Adam H Stephens returns to the Casbah on Sunday and it's a show not to be missed.
Full weekend listings are after the jump. Click 'keep on reading' below.

sd:dialed in North Park Music Thing Showcase

Perhaps you picked up this week's CityBeat and saw the program for the North Park Music Thing? Perhaps you noticed that I produced a stage at Eleven with my SoundDiego friends as sponsors? I've been talking about it for a while now and if you've followed my Facebook and Tweets, you know that things are never easy when it comes to booking.

My finalized lineup is as follows:

8pm- The Moviegoers

9 pm- Itai Faierman (of The Mashtis)

10 pm- Your Cannons

11 pm- Swim Party

12 pm- The Kabbs

1 am- Boyscout

I just wanted to take the opportunity to explain why my lineup changed. Holy Rolling Empire's guitarist Ian had to cancel as he's under doctors orders not to do much of anything after an injury. He's been off his feet for over a month and while he'll be okay, in order for him to heal properly, he has not been able to play at all. It was disappointing to all of us, but The Kabbs stepped up and will be filling the slot they left vacant.

This week I also found out that d/wolves would not be allowed to play because Eleven's new Entertainment license doesn't allow for underage performers, or if it does, it needs to be clarified by the issuing agency and the new owners just aren't willing to take a chance the day after opening. I love these kids and you can catch them tonight at Soda Bar, or on Saturday night at the SESAC showcase, also at the Soda Bar. Itai Faierman of The Mashtis will be filling the slot they left vacant.

The bands and I got together and decided to make Eleven your one destination for the night, so we encourage everyone to wear a costume for our Sci-Fi Prom. Anything that would work at Comic-con will work here. We'll have a photo booth and we expect it to be a great night.

Additionally, my bands all submitted some music for a compilation, which you can download for free via SoundCloud. I hope to see everyone this Friday night!

NPMT In Video

Digital Wave Video was at North Park Music Thing recording all the action last week and some videos have been uploaded to YouTube. Here are a couple of them. Go to their YouTube page here for more.

Digital Wave is supposed to send me their footage of this song, but this video is the song the Presidents of The United States sang to me.

Digesting NPMT

North Park Music Thing took to the streets of North Park (and University Heights, Hillcrest, City Heights, South Park, and Kensington, if you want to be truly accurate. I participated by attending panels, seeing bands, doing some schmoozing, and even selling merch for a band at the Street Fair. Overall, I enjoyed myself and found value in the weekend, but that's not to say there's not room for improvement. One funny thing is that I didn't take a single photo all weekend, like I was protesting myself, in a way? I don't know why, but there is some video I'm trying to get my hands on, but I'll talk about it all if you 'keep on reading'.

When I first received the press release about the event, I have to be 100% honest and say I cringed. Because of trademark issues, the event could no longer be "North By North Park". This was an incredible opportunity to completely rebrand the event and I think it is unfortunate that they didn't take full advantage to make this an inclusive and wide embracing conference. The official title was North Park Music Thing: San Diego Music & Media Conference. With the inclusion of LA Bands and many of the music industry panelists coming from other regions, this should've been the year to brand the conference with bigger reach. The San Diego part is already limiting; keeping North Park in the title is not only inaccurate, but to me a bit unfair to the venues outside of North Park: The Beauty Bar, The Ken Club, Radio Room, Soda Bar, Whistle Stop, Lestat's, Kadan, and The Ruby Room among them. All that said, let's move on to the meat of the conference.

I got to Lafayette early on Saturday Morning and hopped around the panels a bit. As I am not a musician, it's more just my personal interest in being there rather than expectations of practical information. I felt a lot of the information was a little repetitive from last year at times, but it seemed the rooms were doubled or tripled in attendance compared to last year, so I hope those musicians found the information useful. There were recurring things in the panels about music, which can be reduced to 2 words: Don't Suck.

I spent some time at panels with Lyn and she took really specific and good notes, which can be found here, here and here. I did find the "Creating The Buzz" panel to be interesting as I've been dipping my toes in some publicity and promoting and while I am on the receiving end of press releases every day, hearing some more focused information from publicists was interesting. It also lead to Seth inviting me to have lunch with Judy Miller (Motormouth Media) and Marc Silverman (ADA Distribution) at Mama's Bakery & Deli which was fantastic. They weren't going to stick around in San Diego for the night, so they also gave us their room...that in a minute.

After lunch, it was back to more panels. There were certain people who asked really valuable questions in multiple panel that were relevant to the topic of the session (like the guy from Echo Revolution, or my new BFF Josh Damigo) and then there were people who seemed to ask the same question in every panel because they weren't getting the answer they wanted to hear, which was a pretty inconsiderate waste of everyone's time. There were a few questions that came up that I felt deserved better answers, too...so off the top of my head:

To the kid who asked where a 14 year old kid can play: the panel was right about house parties and these sewer shows and whatnot, but there are other legit places other than Soma including Epicentre, 8Teen, The Marquee, and ChannelTwelve25. If I was a kid, I'd also hit up record stores (M-Theory, Taang!, Record City, Off The Record, Lou's, Music Trader) and grab fliers and talk to store employees about where other young bands are playing.

To the female R&B singer looking for venues: check out Grown Folks Music at El Dorado on Thursdays. Talk to the band about other bands that work with vocalists. LaTaunya Lockett sings with them and I guarantee she has a wealth of knowledge about places to play or sing. Check out the stuff going on at Humphrey's Backstage Lounge, Onyx/Thin, and Dizzy's to see if you fit in anything there.

To the scrunchie lady with the one woman show who refuses to use Twitter and Facebook: Try the 10th Avenue Theatre.

To the rest of people wondering how to make it big, how to get people to come see you play, how to get booked at the hot spots around town, how to land music in movies, I have to say that as someone who goes out at least 5 nights a week to see live music, I was shocked at how many faces I didn't recognize. Of course I knew a lot of people there, if not in person at least by their bands or whatever, but musicians who only go out when they're playing are the same type of people who don't even stick around to support the other musicians they perform with and frankly, I would never support someone who didn't make every attempt to support their larger community. I know everyone can't go out with the frequency that I do, but there is music every night of the week. Find people who do what you do and support them and they'll do the same. I like to say that the San Diego music scene is full of cliques, but the cliques are really easy to fall in to.

After the panels were done, I hung on the patio with friends until we got some beer from the adjacent liquor store, and hung out in the room for a tiny bit, until they had to scramble to their venues and I got to take a nap. Believe me, I appreciated that room. Around 8, I decided I would test the shuttle since it was going right to my house in Kensington, so I could check on my dog, freshen up, and dump my backpack. It came on time, and I was able to make it just under 15 minutes to catch the next shuttle back to the North Park area.

My first music stop was Bar Pink which was quickly filling up with people. I caught most of Lights On's set then decided I would say hi to Mike and the boys of Lualta who were playing at True North. It was my first time there and there was a line around the building of people who were waiting for the music to be done so they could do their regular TN weekend and not give a shit about the amazing music all over town. Mike and I have been friends since junior high and he cracked some jokes about playing just a couple more songs, "then you can get back to your chicken wings and DJs". It was actually cool because there was plenty of room to breathe before the throngs were let in.

I met up with Sean at Bar Pink but the line there got crazy fast, so we went to U-31 in hopes of catching Apes of Wrath and Holy Rolling Empire, but that line was already insane, so we decided to split from that area. We caught the northbound shuttle at 30th and University, but realized it was taking us on a loop to El Cajon Blvd, out to Ruby Room. Since I didn't plan on staying in the hotel, we stopped at Red Fox for a minute, then I got the remainder of the beer from the room, and caught the next shuttle to Kensington. After a brief stop at my house, we were at the Ken Club waiting for The Silent Comedy to start. There wasn't a huge crowd at first, but since they had such a late set, it seemed a lot of people rolled in from Radio Room and Soda Bar to fill the room by the time they played.

And then that was it. 3 bands. That is all I got to see. In my list of things that can be done better next year, I'd like to see the music staggered. There's no reason why Scarlet Symphony (at Ruby Room), Transfer (at U-31), The Silent Comedy (at Ken Club), and Unclie Joe's Big Ol Driver (at Beauty Bar) should all "headline" at or around the same time. I'd like to maybe see some matinee shows at the busier bars (like U-31 and Bar Pink) and then let those places have their standard busy Saturdays and encourage the true music fans to branch out to the other venues around town. I think I'd like to see a little more random bills, too, instead of all similar bands playing the same bars, though I understand this had to do with the sponsors, too. There were great bands at every bar and prioritizing, at least for me, came down to shortest lines, convenience of working my way back towards home, and cheapest drinks.

After Silent Comedy played, a few friends dropped by and we ended up staying up way too late, which was really fun at the time, but made me miss the band management panel that I really wanted to see, and regrettably, I missed Avi Buffalo, the one band I said NOT to miss. I rode my bike the 2.6 miles and arrived in time to catch the Social Media panel, a bit of the songwriting panel, then have lunch at Luigi's while listening to The Blackheart Procession, before heading to the mainstage to meet with Presidents of the United States of America to do their merch.

I should also note that the street fair seemed very lightly attended. For one, people could line the sidewalks of El Cajon Blvd and listen from outside the fence, but I imagine a lot of people were recovering from a big Saturday as well as the fact that the free Cityfest was going on in Hillcrest all day long. Hopefully that can be adjusted next year. I had fun selling merch and there were a lot of PUSA fans who came out specifically to see the band. I had my shining moment when the band announced that I was their merch girl and asked me to lean out of the tent. They couldn't see me and turned it into an impromptu song as they had the entire crowd wave at me. I'm waiting on the video for that, but hope to have it in a couple days.

After they wrapped up, the sun was dropping quickly and I still had a bike ride home to think about, so I didn't hang around. Since I recently got this bike from my sister, I haven't been able to get a proper headlight or tail light, have no helmet, and the brakes need work, so I cautiously rode home on sidewalks on Meade.

I thought I was done with the weekend, took a nice long shower, and settled in to True Blood, until Jake inquired about the closing party at Casbah. How could I say no? So we caught Apes of Wrath and The Growlers and caught up with all the good people who came out before finally drawing the weekend to a close.

All in all, it was a great weekend. I hope attendance continues to rise, but I have that hope in general for the San Diego music scene all year round, anyway. We have so much talent in this city and there's no reason why San Diego shouldn't be on the map as a music destination.

NPMT: Avi Buffalo

I wasn't part of the planning for NPMT at all, but I was asked my opinion about some LA bands and had a very small part in contacting some L.A. peeps. Of the dozen or so bands I actually suggested, two were selected. Unfortunately one of those bands, Local Natives, had a scheduling conflict and had to decline the invite, but the other one is someone I'm really stoked to see.

I heard about Avi Buffalo one night when I was working at the Casbah. I got to talking to a guy who's in a band called Tommy Santee Klaws and he asked if I'd heard of Avi, told me he was some sorta high school prodigy, and that he had been working on a demo and was already generating some buzz in LA (and some association with Beck but I'm not sure what exactly). Anyway, he ran to his car, handed me a CD and told me to rip it into my iTunes. I'm glad I did, and after you see Avi Buffalo on Sunday, I hope you can be glad about my chance meeting, too.

Greg Laswell on KCRW

Greg Laswell is always working hard and his latest project is called Covers which will be released on October 6. And, despite the "LA based" description, we all know he's another product of San Diego that we can all be proud of. You can catch him on KCRW performing a cover of "Your Ghost" and make sure you download it for free. Now I'm even more bummed to have missed his Saturday night performance at the Casbah.

While I'm at it, did you know he played North Park Music Thing (or NXNP) last year? Here's part of that stellar performance (and the loud as hell fan attempting to cool the room):

NPMT is This Weekend!!

There's a certain friendly competition among internet geeks. Everyone wants "firsties", the first to announce exclusive information before anyone else has it, the first to call something "the next big thing" before it is so, the first to hear a new record or know of a new bar and on and on. I play the game, too. I don't care. It's fun. And Twitter makes it easy.

But there are also things where I am happy to step aside. The ever-faithful blogging queen, Lyn, over at Chickrawker beat me to the punch on a big NPMT guide. And honestly, she was so thorough, the best advice I have to give about managing your North Park music thing is to check out her guide. Whether you're in a band or not, the panels are really interesting (though probably no major onstage squabbles this year).

I also planned on doing a full list of bands to see, but all that information is here and after last year, the best advice I can give for the most part is pick a venue and stick with it or be completely flexible about who you want to see. It's a really fun weekend no matter where you end up, and come Sunday, you can kick back and just enjoy the street fair.

The last thing I have to say about North Park Music Thing, since you've read this far, is that I have ONE PAIR of wristbands to give away for the weekend. I know times are tough (believe me, I know) and I'd like to give them to someone worthy. Email and tell me why you deserve the wristbands and I'll select a winner on Thursday. Tell me about how you tour bus broke down on the way to SXSW, the jail you were thrown into while touring, the weirdest gig you've ever played. If you're not a musician, tell me why you're worthy and why you deserve to attend. Send with Subject: NPMT. Good luck!!

It's not too late to register, so if you don't win, buy your tickets now.

SAN DIEGO MUSIC FOUNDATION PRESENTS SECOND ANNUAL NORTH PARK MUSIC THING

SAN DIEGO – May 20, 2009 – North Park Music Thing (NPMT), previously known as North By North Park (NXNP), is back for its second year to bring industry leaders and musicians together for a weekend of panel discussions, demo review sessions and live performances.

The annual three-day music and media conference will be held at the Lafayette Hotel, located at 2223 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego, August 7-9, 2009. A 150-musical act showcase on more than 18 San Diego venue stages will follow the workshops on Saturday, August 8 and will highlight performances from bands and individual musicians from across the Southwestern United States. Event organizers are accepting entries for performers at Saturday's Music Fest through June 12. For more, click 'keep on reading' or for tickets, click the banner at the top of the page.

"We're excited to see North Park Music Thing build on the success of last year's event," said Kevin Hellman, President of the San Diego Music Foundation. "This year we're adding a Sunday Street Fest along El Cajon Blvd, which will feature three live music stages, international food court, live art shows and a variety of street vendors."

NPMT's featured speaker and performer is bassist and songwriter, Nathan East. A San Diego native, East has co-written and performed songs with George Harrison, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton and B.B. King, and served as a long standing member of Clapton's studio and touring band. East played on Clapton's Grammy award-winning "Unplugged" album, and also lent his talent to Clapton's "Change The World," which was awarded Song of the Year at the 1997 Grammy Awards.

Workshop discussions on Saturday and Sunday will be led by panelists with experience in various areas of the music industry including engaging social media in promotions, breaking into the music business, hiring a manager, songwriting techniques, and more. Panelists include Robbie Lloyd of Silva Artist Management, Peter Jesperson of New West Records, Nanci Walker of Universal Music Publishing, Amy Stevens of KROQ-FM (106.7), Casey Robison of BMI, Tim Mays of The Casbah, Albert Ching of OC Weekly, Josh Briggs of ASCAP, Mike Locke of Rhino Records, and Josh Feingold of SESAC, among others.

All proceeds from North Park Music Thing will be donated to the San Diego Music Foundation, which seeks to enrich the San Diego music community by providing professional development opportunities and assistance to local musicians. The Foundation organizes the annual San Diego Music Awards show, recognizing the achievements of the local music community, and also encourages the next generation of musicians through its Taylor Guitars for Schools program, which has provided over 1000 guitars to 56 elementary schools in San Diego County, who include guitar in their music curriculum.

San Diego is once again host to the Rock n Roll Marathon and organizers have put out the call for band submissions. Additionally, last year's "North By North Park" is now being called "North Park Music Thing- San Diego Music Conference and Festival" and whie not exactly the catchiest name ever, the conference was great last year and will be even bigger and better this year and all bands of all styles and genres should submit their music for consideration in the festival.

North Park Music Thing:

As you may have heard by now, our San Diego Music Conference - North by North Park has a new name: NXNP is now known as North Park Music Thing - San Diego Music Conference & Festival. And this year, we have expanded the event to cover 3 days, from Friday, August 7 thru Sunday, August 9, 2009. Please take a look at the new and improved website - go to http://www.northparkmusicthing.com for more info.

Artists that are interested in showcasing at NPMT need to submit music to the conference via our special submission page at http:/www.sonicbids.com/NPMT. The deadline for submissions is on June 15, so if you are interested in a performance slot, please submit your your band as soon as possible, so our staff has the chance to review your music.

If you did not attend in 2008, this event is similar to what is done annually in Austin at South by Southwest. There are musicians workshops, demo reviews and this year, there will be 20+ stages with over 150 artists showcasing their music. We expect even more of the music industry to attend this year, so plan to join us! We've once again set this event up so it's a very, very, very, VERY affordable event for everyone to attend. This year in Austin, the rate to attend was $699 per person. BUT, the early bird NPMT registration rate will be only $25, and that's for two days of music and workshops. For those that wish to attend, tadvance registration to attend will begin next week, on Wednesday, April 1, online only, via the event website at: http://www.northparkmusicthing.com

The 2008 event was more successful that we had ever hoped that it would be, and as we prepare for 2009, we are open to all suggestions, criticism and comments. If you have any ideas - good or bad -- that might help make NPMT an even better experience for everyone....now is the time to speak up!
