Overdue Recap: MgmT, Yeasayer, Calico Horse @ Casbah, Jan 25, 2008

I realize I've somehow fallen over a week behind in posting, but again, with work, shows, getting sick, and being lazy, I just haven't been able to keep up like I would like. Especially after my hyping MgmT so much, you'd think I would've been all over posting about that show. But I'll slowly catch up when I can and keep the other in between stuff coming as well.

As it happened, I was really excited to head to the Casbah that night, which was now two Fridays ago. I ended up skipping all the ASR stuff for the rest of the weekend, opting instead to chill at home before the show. My poor dog really misses me. But I did motivate, swooped downtown to pick up Andrea, then got to the Casbah. The air was electric. I don't think I've been as excited about a new band in that way since Wolf Parade played the Casbah. We hung out in the back bar for a while (as some chick barfed her brains out in the Atari Lounge) then made our way in briefly for Calico Horse. The crowd was thin at that point, but filling up fast, and there were a ton of people hanging outside hoping for tickets.

Between bands, Bob was cracking us up in the back bar per usual, but then I realized I wanted to make sure I was close for the show, so I got a frosty beverage then waited up front. The show was everything I was hoping for and more, though there were a couple songs from the album that they skipped which kinda surprised people. I only took a few photose because I decided I wanted to YouTube a couple. It was especially fun because a group of my friends were all up front shaking asses throughout the set.

MgmT "Time To Pretend"

MgmT "Electric Feel"

We really need the Casbah to tilt up that one center yellow light, but you get the gist. The show was excellent, and after the set, the band hung out on the patio. I know you're supposed to hope a band plays on a great bill, but in this case, I was having so much fun that I wasn't really paying attention when Yeasayer hit the stage. What was funny about that is that Brooke was so into them, she left the front to come back and find me (back at the back bar) and demand that I come take pictures of the band, so I did, and stayed up front for the rest of the set.

There's really nothing more for me to say here except that both bands deserve all the hype their getting over the internets. Music should make you feel that good, and being there with my friends made it all that much better. Of course, our night didn't end there and a group of us all made our way back to my house and stayed up till the wee hours of the morning. I consider myself lucky that my neighbor takes off to LA every weekend or he'd probably wanna kick my ass. Of course, the late night took its toll and I didn't get to ASR on Saturday either.

Anyway, like I said, I'll be catching up with posts when I can. That next day was rainy, so I ruled out the Gram Rabbit show and instead opted for The Frantic Romantic's CD Release at the Ken, then Sunday there was the 94/9 show with Team Abraham, The Tighten Ups, Desert Diamonds and Hotel St. George. Then I got sick again and had to work late several nights, but I do have stuff from this past weekend as well, with Langhorne Slim and Silverbird, Swim Party et al at the Ken, then my Superbowl Sunday. The fun never stops, it seems, and this week will be no exception starting off with Grand Ole Party at M-Theory on Tuesday. Yikes, I should probably get some sleep.

Super Tuesday + Fat Tuesday = Downtown Precinct Voting Disaster

I saw this story a few weeks ago and still think it's pretty hilarious...

From kfmb.com:

On Super Tuesday, Fifth Avenue will be closed from Broadway all the way south to
Harbor. Election officials hope by getting the word out early, they won't see a
thin turnout on Fat Tuesday.

For Deborah Seiler, San Diego County's new Registrar of Voters, Super Tuesday came with a super surprise.

"I was surprised I didn't know it was Mardi Gras," she said.

On Feb. 5 in downtown San Diego while thousands will start partying at 6 p.m., the polls won't close until 8 p.m. It's a problem for 3,000 voters who live in those six
precincts. Because on the same night when they're supposed to vote at four
polling places, 16 blocks of downtown San Diego will be fenced off and closed to
traffic.
I'm sure voting will go just as smoothly as it does every election, i.e., not smooth at all.

And, by the way, you know how you're not supposed to talk politics at work? That is a really good idea. You just might find out that someone you thought you were on the same page with is voting for someone who wears magic underpants.

Another LiveNation Setback In San Diego

According to an article in the U-T over the weekend, Coors has canceled its naming rights contract with the amphitheatre in Chula Vista after 10 years.

You can read the full article here.

I'll summarize some of the interesting points of the article:
  • The spokesperson for Coors had no reason why the decision was made
  • No official end of the contract is known, but it will be "soon"
  • The GMs of the amphitheatre are mum and had no comment
  • It's unknown if summer concerts will be affected
  • A spokesperson for Chula Vista was unaware that Coors was canceling their contract
  • Per usual, the racist U-T commenters are out in full force, blaming immigration and Mexicans for everything wrong with the amphitheatre and Chula Vista

LiveNation just keeps getting kicked in the nuts, no?

Catching Up: ASR, Iglu & Hartly @ Bondi, A Scribe Amidst The Lions @ Casbah

Thursday was a good day, though that's the day I discovered my computer's adapter was busted which left me with cyber-paralysis. I left work a little bit early so I could get home and try to make it downtown before ASR shut down, but that didn't quite work out. By the time Andrea and I arrived it was just before 6, so I secured a yellow zone parking spot and we went to the convention center in time to get our ASR badges before the registration desk shut down.

The main floor was closed, but there was a "Green" party upstairs- all the eco-friendly, earth-conscious vendors of hemp clothing, herbal remedies, and surf and skateboards made from renewable resources were in one room. We perused the booths, then made our way to the back corner where there was a kind of relaxation zone with massage tables. The vendors had these mats that are made of broken up bits of amethyst. There's a slight DC charge and the rocks heat up, making a heating pad, but it also supposedly creates an effect of putting UV rays of light through your body. I'm not all new agey, but after just 20 minutes lying on the mat with a washcloth of aromatherapy over my eyes, and I felt renewed. To make it even cooler, the rep told us he specializes in sound therapy, and proceeded to play a didgeridoo over our bodies. The vibrations from "the didge" felt amazing, like I'd just gotten a massage. I was gonna link to the site to purchase a mat, they're like $1600 and I lost the brochure. Sorry.

After our moment of chilling out, we hit up some small servings of the free organic food in the buffet and watched the Mattson 2, this duo of twins who look straight outta the OC and reminded me of music from Happy Days. Apparently they've opened for Jack Johnson, so you kinda know what crowd they're going for, and I suppose were quite appropriate for ASR.

Here's some pics from all that action:

After that we headed to the Hard Rock Hotel, where there was a party for some surf company. We thought our badges got us in, but apparently there was a list, so Andrea did the talking and got us in, but the hostesses, as downtown hostesses are, you know, in the position of being God and all, didn't give us the two drink tickets per person that the listed people were getting. No matter. We bought a round of drinks and stood around. The place is not for me. Stark black inside with too many crystal beads to refract what little light is in the club, 15 hostesses standing around gossipping, and all the bartenders are chicks- there to look hot but to pour the shittiest drinks on the planet for $10 a pop. A big, giant fuck that from this broad. Since we'd only snacked at ASR, we made friends with one of the catering girls who made sure we at least got plenty of the tray passed appetizers before we sucked down our drinks and got the hell out of there.

We realized we probably had a lot of time before Iglu & Hartly would play at Bondi, so we stopped in at Dussini and made our way upstairs to the bar. Kim, one of the bartenders there, won bartender of the year in Citybeat's "Best Of" issue, but more important, my mom has taken care of her daughter since she was a teeny tiny baby, so we chatted with her and she made us some lovely cocktails, definitely compensating for the shitty drinks we had at Hard Rock.

We didn't really know when stuff would get under way at Bondi, so we headed over to check it out. We got a couple drinks. Not quite as expensive as we expected, but again with the weak pours. WTF is it with downtown bars and how does anyone even get buzzed? Andrea asked for a jack with a "splash" of coke and the guy put too much in, so he was gonna toss it, but she made him give it to her AND give her what she was actually paying for, so I guess that was our score for the night. We found a table and chilled there for a while, then decided to make our way into the space where the band was going to perform.

We finally got word that they'd start at 10, but then at 10 they came onstage and said they'd be on in a half hour. That wasn't gonna work for us, so we found a couple guys in the band and the manager and told them we had other places to be. We were being brats, I realize, but c'mon. Those drinks sucked balls and on top of it, they ran out of Jack. HOW DO YOU RUN OUT OF JACK? Anyway, the band hit the stage around 10:15 and they were so fun to watch, we got over our rip-off woes for at least the time while they were onstage.

They're this kinda dancey rock band from LA, mixed with some white boy raps about pajamas and partying and partying in your pajamas and with a ton of hooky, catchy sing-a-long verses. The band has the LA hipster thing going against them("You can't wear the gold shoelace in your hair- I was gonna wear my gold shoelace in my hair!") but if you can get past the look, they really are a fun party band and would go over really well at Beauty Bar or U-31. I've been "myspace friends" with them for some time, I think Indie 103 has had them play some LA events. I also ended up with about 10 horrible pictures of asscrack. Apparently underwear are out. I didn't get the memo. The crowd was getting pushy and the stage was tiny, so the guitarist and bassist were on the floor directly in front of me. I tried to back off the crowd as much as I could since the bassist had a brace on his leg from ACL surgery, but at one point, the crowd fell toward the stage, the band fell toward the crowd, and one of the dudes ended up bloody. He didn't even notice and they played on. All in all, I'm glad we saw the band and they gave us some CDs on the way out, but I doubt I'll find myself at Bondi anytime soon.

Finally the show ended and we made our way to the Casbah. Where, as I mentioned, REAL bartenders pour REAL drinks. Huge love to Emily. You never realize what you've got till you ain't got it, ya know?

We were there in time to catch A Scribe Amidst The Lions. In the past I've seemed to miss them, or caught fragments of their sets and just wasn't into it, but this time, seeing them start to finish, I was really impressed and look forward to seeing them again. They seem to have tightened up their sound and are less space jammy than I recalled from the past.

Most important, it was great to close the night at a bar that is home. Like I said before, I didn't experience any "bro" attitudes downtown (though a cab of chicks did pass by screaming "hey, baby" at some guys walking down the street), but the attitude of waitstaff, doorguys, and bartenders is enough to steer me clear from any of those places again. Give me the Ken Club or Casbah any day. Oh, and to finish my night, after making it back to Kensington, I stopped in at the Ken Club just to show my love. A great night, indeed.

Where I Attempt To Recap A Week's Worth of Music

I really regret not writing about last week sooner, but the spare time I did have I spent going out, then this week I got sick so I just wasn't up for it. So I'll just get to it already, as best I can remember, picking up after the Ryan Adams show at Spreckels.

After that show, Andrea and I headed to the Casbah, where the show was already in progress. We arrived shortly before demasiado took the stage. It was a great night there; the bar was packed and we caught up with all our friends who were there. It was my understanding that demasiado was breaking up because Jon has a new project called
Dr Popsicle and The Hair Painted Opera (which is AWESOME, by the way), but when they hit the stage and got a little rowdy, kicking mics and knocking over mic stands, Jon screamed into the mic, "this is not our fucking last show." The tension was broken and they proceeded to play another one of their stellar sets.

Closing up the night was The Long and Short of It. I love this band, and I especially love when people only know Ben Johnson as the quiet bartender at the Casbah and then see him onstage for the first time, either in TLaSoI or as the drummer for Hostile Combover. I was actually surprised how many of my friends were seeing the band for the first time that night, but it made for this feeling of discovery, as if I, too, was seeing them for the first time. Ben's gestures onstage are so convincing, were he to start a church, consider me converted.

After the show, some friends met at my house and we were up till the wee hours of the morning. It was great then, that I had no obligations for Sunday. I didn't even watch the Chargers game. Sacrilege, I know. It was just a good day to laze around, watching movies and whatnot. I love those days. The next day I had to work really late, so it was good to have had a full day of rest.

By Tuesday, I was ready for a great show at the Casbah. Andrea and I lagged a little and missed Fing, but we were right on time for Rafter, who unveiled their latest lineup of three. I love the party when the band is has 10 or 11 players, but I also really enjoyed the 3 piece. With most of Rafter's songs coming in right about 2 minutes (makes sense that he writes radio and tv jingles for a living), all of them are catchy and I was singing along to the ones I know. I bought the latest release Sex, Death, Cassette and love the mood it puts me in when I hear it.

I didn't know anything about The Lonely H or Shaky Hands going into the show, but I genuinely enjoyed both bands. Unfortunately, a week later all I can remember is that I was dancing a lot, that the singer for The Lonely H was really, really tall, that all but one of the guys in The Lonely H are under 21, and that I liked both bands. I'm gonna have to delve into their recorded stuff. We did hang out with Shaky Hands for a little bit, taking pics on the patio, but we didn't stay for too long after the bands ended.

The Lonely H

Shaky Hands

From there, Andrea and I went to Scolari's on a hunt for T-Bone, that found us at Chaser's to chat with Chris Henry and Donny for a bit before we realized how late it was and I dropped her off at home and closed down for the night.

Wednesday night was cold and rainy but I motivated enough to head to U-31 and I arrived in time to catch Republic of Letters and The Midwinters. The day before, U-31 had built their stage for bands, and I look forward to watching the bar grow into a great venue for music as they upgrade their sound system and board. Also of note...since I'd skipped dinner, between bands I went to grab a bite and tried out the taco shop across the street, Hurradurra, which was pretty damn good and is open till midnight. Noted for the future, for sure. I didn't take any pictures that night but we all know I love Republic of Letters, and I'll agree that The Midwinters has a bit of a Ben Folds vibe to them as Natalie noted a couple weeks ago, but what I loved was the lead acoustic guitar and the vocals that were a bit reminiscent of Glen Phillips of Toad The Wet Sprocket, circa Dulcinea. I was glad that the show ended by midnight and considered finding T-Bone again at Chasers, but there was no parking and it was cold and I opted to call it a night since I knew I had a big weekend ahead.

boo.

I'm sick again. This time isn't quite as bad as two weeks ago, but I'm all germy and icky. I've missed every show I wanted to see this week. Rogue Wave? nope. Delta Spirit? nope. The Vision of A Dying World? nope. Castanets? nope.

I realize I'm not the only person to ever get sick, and a head cold isn't exactly life threatening, and I know I've been such a whiner, but this really, really sucks.
