- I always find that I have baby fever when I'm at the zoo. Following the births of animals like the Andean bear cubs (Ransisku & Suyana) or the Amur leopard cubs Ulybka & Zorinka, Pavitra the red panda, the Debrazza's monkey Kasai, the Schmidt's Red-Tailed monkey Hemasi, or Yezi the Francois langur. And the capybara birthday were pretty sweet, too. And of course I pretty much still visit little Kaja the orangutan almost every day. So of course everyone was delighted to hear that Luna, the Baird's tapir gave birth last week. While some got an early glimpse, I finally got to see her on habitat today and tapir babies are beyond cute. I can't wait to see her running around with all the baby capybaras that share a habitat. The waterfall has temporarily been turned off for her safety but mom doesn't seem to be letting her out of her sight so she should be just fine. Summer is in full swing at the San Diego Zoo and it's open until 9pm daily, which gives plenty of opportunities to enjoy the hippos late at night when they really come to life in their pool.
