Rocktoberfest 2011 in Photos

I don't know about you, but I had such an amazing time at Rocktoberfest. The lineup was stellar and all of the bands were not only incredibly professional, but all proved why they represent San Diego and can command festival sized stages. I arrived with The Heavy Guilt long before the gates opened to help with last minute details and make sure I had covered all my bases in getting out set times through the tweet-o-sphere and the interwebs. Luckily everything was running smooth and I had time to visit my friend Pete at True North to get some food before the festival. (If you haven't eaten at True North, you are seriously missing out. Get the juicy lucy with tots and you'll be converted.)
By the time I was back, 3pm rolled around and gates were opened. Unlike last year, when it rained and we opened gates at noon, this year the event was well attended from the start up until the finish. I can speak on behalf of West Coast Tavern and the Casbah in saying that this year's attendance blew last year out of the water. With a full bar, a good selection of beer (Beck's Oktoberfest was my personal preference all night), and re-entry allowed so you could grab a bite at a nearby restaurant if you didn't want to wait in the food truck lines, this is the perfect setup for a micro-festival. West Coast Tavern also has the nicest bathrooms in North Park, in case ya didn't know, and I sat down with Everest for awhile as they finished their dinner before their set, so that was pretty great, too. If you didn't come last year, you should know that the two facing stages was a new setup and I think it was perfect allowing the music to jump back and forth all night long.
I'm just gonna post a couple photos and I really don't need to go through a band by band rundown because they were all fantastic....The Heavy Guilt, Low Volts, The Styletones, Bully, Dead Feather Moon, The Creepy Creeps, The Soft Pack, and Everest all delivered. Everest played a bunch of new stuff and told me they're working on a new record for the beginning of 2012. Tim Pyles did a great job as MC and even let me come up on stage and introduced me so I could get this crowd photo:

Transfer
The Soft Pack
Dead Feather Moon
The Styletones
Low Volts
The Heavy Guilt
Rocktoberfest takes place in the lot behind the Birch North Park Theatre on October 22 from 3-10pm with two facing stages alternating music all night, so you don't have to choose one band over another. The show is put together by your friends at West Coast Tavern, The Casbah, and FM 94/9. You can buy tickets here for $15. Click here for the Facebook event page to RSVP and share with friends.

FM 94/9 Indie Jam In Photos: June 5, 2011
Everyone keeps asking me how Indie Jam was this past Sunday, so here are my photos (finally). I seriously had a blast, every year seems to be better than the last. Despite it being a great time, it's also pretty challenging trying to balance running from stage to stage for photos with trying to still be able to hang out with friends and enjoy the beautiful day and amazing bands. I know, I know- poor me. I'm not complaining, but I did skip shooting some bands because I was running around catching up with friends, chatting with Everest and Surfer Blood and some of the other bands, and trying to enjoy some of the food and libations. It was an incredible day for sure.

Everest Kicks Off FM 94/9's 2011 "About The Music" series
Everest has rolled through San Diego a few times this year, in support of Minus The Bear at Soma, with The Whigs at the Belly Up, and with Silversun Pickups, also at Soma. The band is made up incredible veteran musicians who among them have worked with or been members of Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, Earlimart, Great Northern, John Vanderslice, and The Watson Twins among others.
They've got two records available. Their first, Ghost Notes, got critical praise, but it was recorded within weeks of the band's formation. It's On Approach that truly feels like a band making a unique mark in rock music, written as a unit after touring under their belts, with some inspiration from here and there, but still difficult to pigeonhole other than really freaking good music. The first time I saw the band, I though vocalist Russell Pollard sounded like an American James Walsh of Starsailor, but I think that band is more polarizing and Pollard has a smoother easier-on-the-ears voice than that, though I still kinda hear vocal similarities at moments, which to me is a good thing.
Everest will be returning to the Belly Up for the About The Music series on January 11. Tickets go onsale tomorrow and are only $6, with $1 going to the About The Music fund. If you're registered as an FM 94/9 Insider, you can get your tickets today during the presale.

Photos: Silversun Pickups, Everest, The Henry Clay People @ Soma, 8/7/2010
It took a really long time for me to post these photos, mostly because I took so many that night and with the LED lights, the ratio of crappy photos to decent ones was very high. Nevertheless, it was such a fun night, even for Soma, because I was with two great friends. Unfortunately my friend Steve brought the wrong tickets so Evan had to drive him back to his car in North Park, but it didn't take long for them to come back to hang out and enjoy the show. And it was a good one. Crowded and hot as all hell, but I think back to shows in my youth where I left a show completely drenched (in my sweat and the sweat of others) and I can handle a good crowded show every once in a while. It was fun catching up with The Henry Clay People, it was awesome seeing Everest slowly win over the crowd, and it was incredible watching Silversun Pickups absolutely dominating the stage.

This Saturday: Silversun Pickups, Everest, The Henry Clay People @ Soma

I've seen all three bands, SSPU and THCP several times, and this is a stellar lineup. Plan on getting there early and staying through all three bands' sets. I have a plus one if anyone wants to go with me. I wish I had more to say about the show, but at this point you've already bought your tickets or are refusing because you hate Soma, so I doubt I'll really change any minds today. Still, I think this is gonna be one of my favorite shows this summer.
This is a recent video I shot of Everest, when they opened for The Whigs at the Belly Up.
This is a really old (and dimly lit) video I shot, pre-HD camera, of The Henry Clay People playing at the Casbah. I seriously love these guys and hope you make a point to see them. And don't tell anyone that I told you, but they have a headlining gig at the Casbah on September 11. I'll be adding that to the calendar soon.
