Band of Skulls performed live at X1FM.com on Friday before their Casbah show. I knew that since I was working at the Casbah that night, and knowing that Transfer and Apes of Wrath could sell out the Casbah on their own, I wouldn't really get the opportunity to see the band, so Jeff and I went to the Open Door Session in National City. Since the show was earlier than most Open Doors, there were just a few of us there, but we were blown away by Band of Skulls and the performance they delivered. I normally wouldn't video there because the station does such a good job of editing the videos and allowing me to post them, but they might take a few days and I hope that if anyone is contemplating checking them out as they continue to tour that you are won over by this video. Do not miss this band.
I will mention that the show that night was just as packed as I expected so I could really only hear the show in pieces from the patio but it was an amazing night from all three bands and the party that ensued after was pretty damn cool, too.

Rosey's Diary: April 20-24, 2009
After an exhausting weekend at Coachella and very little computer time, it shouldn't be surprising that I took a couple night's off from everything and vegged out. I had over 400 emails to sift through and attempted to make sense of them all by creating a much needed calendar and whatnot. I've been trying to move this site into a better format, which is taking a bit longer than planned, but along with that, I'm dipping my toes into a little bit of this and that. Tim Gonzalez from Amenity contacted me a couple weeks earlier about their video release party, so I spent a couple days helping them out on that before I was finally ready to emerge back into San Diego night life. Funny how a couple days can make me spring back to life. In this post: Pheromones at Bondi, The Old In Out at Casbah, Amenity at X1FM, Kingdom of Magic, Prize Country, and Hostile Combover at Casbah, and Loom, Prize Country, and Kingdom of Magic at Radio Room. Wednesday rolled around and after a couple days of being cooped up in the opium den, it was time to spread my wings. I'd finally finished my listings for the week and noticed that The Pheromones were playing a free show at Bondi. The show was being put on by Shindy.TV. The last time I saw a show at Bondi was during spring ASR in 2008, so I thought it was a good chance to check it out again, while also getting to see Craig play, and also learning what shindy.tv was all about. I can't lie- the sound is still mushy and the room isn't really meant for bands, and maybe it has to do with it being an early show, but it felt like a corporate work party and Jake and I were the crashers. Despite that, they had $4 Trumer Pils and I was out to have a good time, so we just went with the flow and stayed for most of the show. I mentioned before that Craig gave me a crash course in music appreciation and I really like what The Pheromones have got going on. Not my typical scene, but I always feel a little more alive and a little bit more carefree after seeing them perform.
After we had enough of the downtown sport coat and t-shirt crowd, we had to make like homing pigeons to be among our people at the Casbah where we caught The Old In Out. Their dirty garage noise was just what I needed to keep the party going.
I got to the show on time, but got caught up in a long conversation at the back bar with Devon, the drummer of Kingdom of Magic. He does sound and roadie gigs when he's home, so he was telling some great road stories. I made it in to see Modern Rifles but it was so dark and I don't really know the guys, so the few pics I did take are not worth posting. Their CD has blown me away time and time again and I'm glad I was able to catch them again recently.
After MR, Kingdom of Magic took the stage. Holy shit. I love to get my hardcore fix every now and then and they totally brought it. I couldn't take my eyes off Devon who was just a total beast on the kit.
The rest of the band brought it just as hard. I guess when most hardcore bands tour, they still do the all ages circuit or play house parties to get town to town which is cool and DIY and all, but it's music that speaks to a whole different side of me and I love seeing it live, so perhaps I should do my research to find other bands doing it so I don't have to wait every 6 or 8 months for my fix of bands that are familiar.
Prize Country was after Kingdom of Magic and this is the band that I always love seeing, not only because they're perhaps more punk than hardcore, with catchier melodic songs, but they have some really great tattoos that I always like to check out. Sorry for sounding so fan girl and obviously I see a lot of people with a lot of tattoos all the time, but they have ones that I actually look at and it makes me think maybe one day I'll get some ink.
Closing out the night was local boys Hostile Combover who just brought the whole night full circle proving that some nights can really have the perfect cohesive bill.
After the show, Miggs was spinning records at the Ken so I decided to drop by to finish up what was quite a stellar evening of music.
The next morning I worked at the family daycare for the day. Just me and my dad and 6 kids all day long. That is one hell of a day with a lot of diaper changing. After that I swung by the Open Door Session at X1FM where Republic of Letters was set to play. I love these boys and seeing them live again was great. It felt like it had been far too long. (note: catch them this weekend at Art Around Adams)

After catching up with the boys after their set, I swung home to take care of my pets before making my way to Radio Room. There was a lot going on that night, but Prize Country and Kingdom of Magic were playing again, this time with Loom, so I wanted to get my fill once again, and I sometimes don't give Radio Room enough love. I went to the show by myself, but I certainly wasn't alone as Bearpaw rolled up with the fast crowd in their "Cool Bus".
Loom is great and I caught them before at the Casbah with Prize Country, so I knew I was gonna enjoy their set. I always like bands that add unconventional instrumentation to music, and Loom has it covered with a violinist. They had some lights onstage so I thought I would play around with them a bit.
Unfortunately, the other bands didn't have lights, so I was challenged, but both of them played amazing sets once again and I was glad that I chose to stick in my neck of the woods for the night. I guess they didn't believe me the night before when I told them I'd see them again. Sometimes you just can't get enough.
It was the perfect way to unwind after daycare and you can be sure that I'll be there again. When Prize Country comes to SD they usually play 2 nights in a row, and I only hope they bring Kingdom of Magic and Loom once again the next time around.
With that, I'll end the post and pick up where I left off another time.

Thursday rolled around and I was so excited. I mentioned that I was helping Amenity with their video event and with the help of Andrew, we were able to get the guys an interview on X1FM.com. I met Mike Down for the first time and caught up with Tim for a bit until Andrew was off air and could greet us. He showed the guys around the studio and they loved it. They did about a 20 minute interview, played some Amenity tracks on air, all the while old Chula Vista peeps were logged into the chat room. It was a great experience all around and has definitely opened up some doors for things to come.
After the interview, I decided since I was already in the South Bay that I'd say hi to my parents and have a real meal for once, even if it was leftovers night at the house. I raided their food cabinet, swung home, and it was off to the Casbah. I try to catch Prize Country whenever they come to town. They definitely satisfy my need for face melting, and they usually bring along a band or two and play with Hostile Combover, so there was no missing this show for me.

Catch Young Love at X1FM Open Door
Island Def Jam's Young Love has always danced to the beat of a different drum. Set to pound the pavement with intricate beats, captivating synth lines, clap tracks, and choruses that will stick in your head like glitter on glue, Young Love is touring behind their recent release "One Of Us", which dropped on April 28th. The band recently performed at Spaceland with The Henry Clay People and San Diego's own Swim Party, and performed the next night at their album release party on April 28 at Whiskey A Go Go. They're playing Bamboozle and a Bowery Ballroom stop on June 2 before wrapping the 24 date tour on June 6th at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago. The band is performing tomorrow night at Porter's Pub at UCSD, but we've just added a special X1FM Open Door session that is free and all ages at the studio from 6-7 pm and we want all of you who can to make it down to welcome this talent to our fine city.

Rosey's Diary: 3.3.09-3.11.09
You know, I had a conversation with a friend about blogging and I've been doing this since 2003. Crazy. It all started as these long diary-like posts where I rambled about everything I did and saw and everyone I talked to or hung out with. So while this might be unfamiliar to readers of this site, it's really the most natural way for me to write and the best way to get it done because it feels less like work and more like I'm just chatting with an old friend. That being said, I am picking up where I left off on that last "diary" post...at least I got past February and am finally writing about March, right? I'll probably keep labeling my posts as such, now that there are so many people contributing to this site these days and since someone jumped down my throat for all my "overdue recaps". So to read my 'diary', click 'keep on reading'.
3.3.09: Neko Case @ Casbah, Joel P West & Matt Curreri @ Soda Bar
I already wrote about spending the day at the Casbah for the free Neko Case show and hopefully you were following me on Twitter and were able to make it to the show because it was a good one. Neko Case played a long set and kept the crowd (well, maybe with the exception of photographers) happy, but as it was an early show with no opener, after the show I made my way to catch Joel P. West and Matt Curreri at Soda Bar. I was pretty exhausted from the day, however, so I didn't take photos, rather just hung out with my friends and enjoyed the show.
3.4.09: This was an all internet day for me, save for lunch with some friends at Souplantation and catching up on much needed sleep. This was the day the CityBeat demo review came out, so I have to admit I spent a day digesting the reviews.
3.5.09: It's no secret that I love Twitter and when Burger Lounge offered free fries to their Twitter followers, it seemed as good excuse as any to walk across the street from my apartment and meet some Twitter friends for a nice lunch. From there, Jake and I went to Gelato Vero to catch up with Daye. I also bumped into Josh from Silent Comedy and chatted a bit before heading home for a bit before making my way to TNT to see Writer and Joel P West as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. The crowd was a little thin at the start, partly because now the City permit requires that the patio be fully enclosed with a temporary fence and open only to those 21 and up, but by the time the music was full swing, there was a healthy crowd there to enjoy both performances.
After the show, I met up with Petro, Kris, and their visiting friends for some beers at their apartment before they called it a night. From there, I joined Jake, Pall, Jimmy, Hoth, Gabriel and a few others who were at Lou Jones before we all walked to Ould Sod and watched some karaoke before it was finally time to call it a night. I know writing about this portion of the night sounds really boring, but in reality it was one of those rare nights that happens when you least expect it. I guess I should just thank those guys for letting me be a part of it.
3.6.09: Friday I woke up with a sore throat and a cold but I wasn't going to let it stop me from my evening plans. In retrospect that might've been a mistake because I got my ass kicked with illness, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
The night started picking up Dagart, meeting at Alex's, then grabbing Natalie on our way to National City for Hotel St. George @ X1FM Open Door Session.

Local Bands should all be trying to get on the Open Door. The crowd is all ages and exposes bands to prospective fans who might not otherwise know the band, there's people watching from across the world via the live stream, the sound is impeccable as a recording studio, and all bands should know how to stretch their performances to an hour when they're accustomed to sticking to 30-40 minute sets. Plus the bands are given a recording of their performance and it is added to the X1FM.com archives (then embedded here).
After the show, I grabbed dinner at In and Out before Alex took me to my car. The rest of them headed to Casbah, but I went to the Marquee to see The Howls, Matt Haeck & The Guiding Light, John Meeks. The venue is a converted church across the street from the Shell station on 25th, just north of the 94. The space is really cool and I'd been warned that there were shows there before that were peppered with religious sermons, which honestly would've made me walk out, but this was not the case at all and the people running it seem to be trying really hard to offer a cool spot for the under 21 crowd to be a part of the music scene, offering bands on weekends, open mic nights for poetry, spoken word, and music, and coming soon, "The Kids Are Alright" karaoke hosted by Adam Gimbel.
The arched ceilings and comfortable low vinyl couches were perfect for the alt-country sounds of The Howls, Matt Haeck, and John Meeks, and actually just what I needed as I felt illness creeping up on me. Since it was an old church, I kinda hoped there'd be hot chocolate and baked goods from grandma's, but maybe they'll work on refreshments in the future. My only complaint about the night is that between bands they played top 40 music that was louder than the bands had been. I know I wasn't the only one cringing as I listened to Fall Out Boy between bands.
As for the music, I'm already a fan of The Howls and John Meeks (who was backed by Jimmy Lavalle, Brian Holwerda, Hoth, and Matt Resovich), but I was glad to finally see Matt Haeck and The Guiding Light, who reminded me of Rocky Votolato both in style and appearance. My camera did not like the lighting, however, so you'll have to see him for yourself. At least you can kinda see the room in these couple snaps.
When the show ended somewhere between 10:30 and 11, I took off and made my way to the Casbah for Team Abraham's CD release show. I rejoined my friends from earlier in the night as well as seeing lots of other friendly faces that made it feel like a crazy house party more than a night at a bar, only I was sick and therefore perhaps the only sober person in the crowd. I wasn't there in time for Gray Ghosts, but noticed music in the Atari Lounge and remembered that Evan of the Parson Redheads was playing, so I went back to listen as best I could over the volume of the smoking patio and the DJ mix inside the venue. Evan was a trooper, though, and when a group of loud "Oh My God!" girls came in those of us listening just pulled up our stools to pay attention.
I'm not exagerrating about the non-sobriety of the crowd. As Team Abraham played and as Andrew mentioned, LJ threw her bra onstage and Dagart stripped to throw his boxers onstage. Nuts. The vibe between the crowd and the band made for a fun performance and I was a little sad I wasn't taking part in the rowdiness.
3.7.09: Saturday I woke up feeling better, so I took care of my household in the morning and then met up with friends and family at Blind Lady. My best friend was in town from Chicago after living in England for a while, so we hung out and caught up over the great organic pizzas and tasty beers that Blind Lady offers.
Eventually everyone had to go, but I was able to drag Todd with me to Jose's because I had to take pictures for an opportunity that seems to have now passed, but at least we had a couple good margaritas. After we ended up at Soda Bar for The Morning Benders and Cuckoo Chaos and I was in an alcohol mixed with cold medicine induced cloud so no pictures of that little adventure. Even Twitter failed that night. I guess it was going around.
I was feeling much better from my cold come Sunday and then I was hit like a truck by a flu that kept me at home and out of commission until Thursday night. Thank goodness for my wifi and Hulu.com as I pretty much laid in bed digesting medicine, liquids, and watching two entire seasons of Friday Night Lights over the course of four days along with my usual regiment of reading news and blogs and twitter and facebook and all these other glorious creations that can allow for someone to be out of commission for four days without feeling disconnected from their world. With that, I'll move on to the last of my diary posts that will make me all caught up.

I wasn't there in time for Gray Ghosts, but noticed music in the Atari Lounge and remembered that Evan of the Parson Redheads was playing, so I went back to listen as best I could over the volume of the smoking patio and the DJ mix inside the venue. Evan was a trooper, though, and when a group of loud "Oh My God!" girls came in those of us listening just pulled up our stools to pay attention.
I'm not exagerrating about the non-sobriety of the crowd. As Team Abraham played and as Andrew mentioned, LJ threw her bra onstage and Dagart stripped to throw his boxers onstage. Nuts. The vibe between the crowd and the band made for a fun performance and I was a little sad I wasn't taking part in the rowdiness.
3.7.09: Saturday I woke up feeling better, so I took care of my household in the morning and then met up with friends and family at Blind Lady. My best friend was in town from Chicago after living in England for a while, so we hung out and caught up over the great organic pizzas and tasty beers that Blind Lady offers.
Eventually everyone had to go, but I was able to drag Todd with me to Jose's because I had to take pictures for an opportunity that seems to have now passed, but at least we had a couple good margaritas. After we ended up at Soda Bar for The Morning Benders and Cuckoo Chaos and I was in an alcohol mixed with cold medicine induced cloud so no pictures of that little adventure. Even Twitter failed that night. I guess it was going around.
I was feeling much better from my cold come Sunday and then I was hit like a truck by a flu that kept me at home and out of commission until Thursday night. Thank goodness for my wifi and Hulu.com as I pretty much laid in bed digesting medicine, liquids, and watching two entire seasons of Friday Night Lights over the course of four days along with my usual regiment of reading news and blogs and twitter and facebook and all these other glorious creations that can allow for someone to be out of commission for four days without feeling disconnected from their world. With that, I'll move on to the last of my diary posts that will make me all caught up.
