- ZOO GOSS:
- The Zoo continues to send out little updates about the pandas, finally admitting that they arrived on June 27 and that they're still getting acclimated. I'm aware that a photographer was able to sneak a shot but was peer pressured by everyone else not to post it, lest they cut even more spaces that are accessible. As it it, there are windscreens on the entire Bashor Bridge, along with two GAs (Guest Ambassadors) guarding the railing from open until close. The stairs at the bridge tower are also closed, in addition to all the walls and fences I previously mentioned.
Besides all that, I've been having a really nice time at the Zoo in spite of the crazy crowds in the lead up and follow up to 4th of July. The fact is that the Zoo creates it's own micro-climate because of all the plants and it always feels about 10-15 degrees cooler than my apartment.
The babies I check on regularly are all doing great. There's a new male Schmidt's Red Tailed Monkey in Ituri Forest, where Mom BB, daughter Jenga, and son Heshima live among the Swamp Monkeys. I haven't caught him on habitat yet, but he's gorgeous in photos, with a beautiful long tail and lanky body. Up where the mandrills live in Monkey Trails, there's another new Schmidt's Monkey, born to Mom Nema and Dad Rocky and sibling to 3 year old Jima. Additionally, the Baird's Tapir baby got a name, Soona, and along with Mom Luna, they've been staying on habitat at night since around the beginning of July, and some photographers have captured Soona swimming. I'm typing this while sitting with Orangutan Karen, so I'm going to call it a day. - Meanwhile, over the weekend it was announced that Winston, the 52 year old silverback at the Safari Park, passed away. It got lost in other news, but he was definitely loved and beloved. Now it will be curious if and when Paul-Donn and Jessica get transferred to the Park so he can take over the family as their fearless leader. Time will tell.
- SEA WORLD GOSS:
- No Seaworld goss this week, but I'm sure you could guess that I took advantage of the lowest pass price of the year and got a new membership. I was going late at night in the days leading up to my expiration and I had some really beautiful moments with the belugas and realized that I find Seaworld valuable when the zoo has shorter hours at varying times of the year. Am I a sucker? Yes, I guess I am.
