It has been a long time since the Hush Sound has been on my radar but I am glad that they're bringing their jangly tunes back to San Diego. I first encountered the four piece band sometime in 2005 when they were opening for Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects, Hawthorne Heights, and From First to Last. But do not hold that against them! The split vocals of Bob Morris and Greta Salpeter and bubbly rhythms brought from the piano and guitars always stood out as simultaneously honoring the past while looking forward to trends that are only recently popular. If you're a fan of the Head and the Heart and the Silent Comedy, then the Hush Sound is worth a listen. Tickets can be purchased here. For a taste of their sound check out the song below.

Tonight! Anti-Monday League feat. Felice Brothers & Conor Oberst
This morning I finally got confirmation that Conor Oberst will, in fact, be performing tonight at the Casbah with the Felice Brothers. Conor has four scheduled dates in California, so apparently tonight will be the warm-up show at the Casbah.I don't know if he'll be playing a full set, or if he'll be opening or closing the show, but for a $14 show, I'd say it's gonna be pretty special regardless. Conor was last in San Diego for the Monsters of Folk tour. This photo is of the back of his head as I stood behind him at Coachella 2009 after he performed...I think he was as enthralled with Leonard Cohen as anyone in the crowd that night.
At this moment, tickets are still available to the show, but as it's been tweeted by @CasbahSanDiego, @FM949sd, etc., I wouldn't wait if you're considering attending. I do not have a guest list, so don't ask, though my birthday is at midnight so I'll be doing some celebrating if you wanna buy me a drink :)
(Update: It is my understanding that Conor will be playing a full set with the Felice Brothers as his backing band.)

I highlighted Kenan Bell for my SoundDiego listings, but I wanted to write a little more...I seriously love these guys. Kenan Bell has played in San Diego a few times now, and while generally unknown to the crowds at those performances, quickly won them over. It's hard not to get caught up in a the flow.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Field Music @ The Casbah March 29, 2010
Every time I hear the band name Field Music the first thought that comes to mind is field recordings. This could not be farther from the truth, but the British band's melodies are in full force on their aggressive 20 song release Field Music (Measure). It appeared the band was either finished or on hiatus, so it was a welcome sight to know they are back in full force. The core member brothers David and Peter Brewis remain while Andrew Moore has left the group. There is a lot of variation in their latest release, and watching them perform live should be quite a treat. I can't think of a better way to start the week. Go to Middletown and watch indie music of the highest calibre.

Tonight: Langhorne Slim, April Smith & The Great Picture Show at Casbah
I'm really looking forward to tonight...not only is Langhorne Slim returning to the Casbah (sadly without my buddy Paul on bass), but he's also doing an in-store at M-Theory before the show, and anyone who has ever been to an in-store knows they're always really special. I'm pretty sure I've seen Langhorne Slim every time he's been to San Diego and with the new record out and a bigger band, tonight should be quite excellent.

Photos: SD:Dialed In 3 yr. Anniversary show @ Casbah, 11/9/09
(I was pretty busy running around on Monday night to focus on the task of taking photos for the anniversary show, so my friend Tim stepped up. Below his words and photos. -rosey)
What a great show at the Casbah, my favorite venue to see local music. My only small gripe (as with many of the clubs here in SD) are the harsh stage lights. They often set the proper vibe to listen to good bands, but tend to pose a challenge when taking photos. It was refreshing to see two out of the three bands brought their own creative lighting techniques.

Overdue Recap: Louis XIV @ Casbah, 2.16.09
I do my best to spread information when I get it, and when I was called on the 14th to help spread the word that Louis XIV were playing Anti-Monday League, I did the best I could. The show was a last minute deal, with Louis added to the front of the bill as a quick pre-tour practice before they were to join The Killers on tour in Europe just two days later. I blogged and twittered as much as I could that they'd play at 9:15 on the dot for a mere $5. I arrived expecting a line around the block, especially since both of the Louis XIV shows in January were sell outs at $20 a pop, but you know, if people aren't reading this site, what else can I do? The show definitely had a good crowd, well near packed even, but those of us there felt privy to an up close and personal preview show, with Shaun Cornell of Transfer joining the band on bass and Andy Ridley of Silent Comedy and Fono taking over on drums.

First, the set list of the night (though they didn't necessarily stick to it in order), which I have to thank Shaun for handing to me at the end of the show, considering there were several fans asking for it.
The show was really great. I was standing next to Cindy from Fono who was so rad during the show, giving me nuggets of band wisdom and fan criticism like "man, that shit was tight!" and explaining that Shaun's multiple pedals were all samples that he nailed for every song. The dork I am, I spent the greater part of the show watching Jason spit onstage and hoping that barefoot Shaun didn't step in it. Yeah, I know, I am a shitty music critic. What I do know is that I had fun, especially since I didn't get to see those two anniversary shows because I was in the Atari Lounge selling merch the first night and skipped the second to see UJBOD at the Ken Club. The only other time I saw Louis XIV was from backstage at Street Scene when it was at Coors Amphitheatre and I'd had lost count of my Cuervo intake. This show made me get it.
I think it is pretty common in local music scenes to love bands until they hit the big time then wax poetic about how they used to be, in this case people holding on to Convoy or talking smack and dismissing what makes it in, dare I say, popular culture, and what we think should make it as representative of our "scene". I can't speak to the band's records besides their radio play, but on this particular night, I got it, and the band proved to be consummate showmen, entertaining through and through, and even with Shaun and Andy just joining, they were spot on joining Jason and Brian like they'd been together for years. So basically, fuck the naysayers, on this night, I was a swooning chick up front enjoying the whole show.
One other thing worth noting about the show was the support from everyone that they got. Everyone from Transfer was there, Jimmy and his new band The Bloodflowers were there, and the guys from Silent Comedy were there. There were no hard feelings, no mud to be slung, no bitterness, just comaraderie and support from musicians, friends and fans.
There was a full bill after Louis XIV featuring The Illuminauts, Inspired Flight, and Get Back Loretta, but Andrew said he'd post about that, so hopefully he still might do so. (No pressure, AWP). In the meantime, Louis XIV is on tour with The Killers in Europe and you can follow their tour as they post on ModLife. Additionally, Shaun told me he'd post some stuff here. I'll keep on him about that. (Again, no pressure, Shaun.)

Catch Louis XIV (v2.0) At The Casbah This Monday!
Tim Pyles has put together one fine Anti-Monday League for our listening pleasure. The lineup includes Get Back Loretta, Inspired Flight, illuminauts and Louis XIV. Yes, Louis XIV will be playing promptly at 9:15. Their performance will be a sort of practice run with their new lineup before they go to Europe in support of The Killers. Funny how Ray played with Louis and now he's with The Killers, right? Anyhow, Jason and Brian have enlisted Shaun Cornell (Transfer, Dirty Sweet) and Andy on drums (Silent Comedy, Fono) to fill after the departure of Mark and James and you get to see it first. The really amazing thing is that the show is still as cheap as the regular Anti-Monday League shows: Six Bucks! Don't miss it and don't be late.

The Long and Short of It, Archons, Get Your Death On, Firethorn @ Casbah 01/05/09
Oh man, what a night! After spending a week in SF for New Years, I was having SD withdrawals, seriously. When I saw the lineup for Anti-Monday League at the Casbah, I knew this was the shot of San Diego music my skull needed to revive my tired ass. I love Firethorn, for a lot of reasons, great live show, great guys, and great tunes. So I made sure to get there early. After catching up with Drew and Paz about New Years and the upstairs tenants’ lack of electricity, I wandering into the already thumping set of Firethorn. If you haven’t seen them, definitely check'em out, they have that gritty rock that is part punk, part grunge, and all awesome. They played a bunch of new songs. Usually, when bands play new songs I think, hmmm, maybe it’ll grow on me, but these new ones I really liked from the moment I heard them. Firethorn has a great sense of melody, and tonight they sounded better than ever. Looking forward to hearing the new songs on record. I really like when Mr. Chris, kicks it up a notch into his screamy vocals. At the end of the set, they set feedback gods ablaze as Chris crashed to the floor, then tackled Sean, and serenaded the audience with the noisiest cover of Blackstreet "I Like the Way You Work"
Get Your Death On followed, and kicked up the heavy riffing. With slamming drums, and riffs meant to make your head convulse forward as though dragged by a semi-truck, GYDO played what they deemed their “best show of 2009.” The very rhythmic intense instrumental sections took you through a portal to some other dimension where everything moves in slow motion. Then the drummer and guitar player would bring you back to reality with a haunting scream or melody. It was awesome when they got the audience to cheer in the “lowest” cheer ever, gggrrrroooowwwlllll!!!!
The last two bands I was most excited to see, since I love talking to Jeff when he’s working the door and had never seen his band before. Wow! When I heard him getting his amp setup, he was already tearing the guitar up! Then the band started and the sound was hitting so loud and hard, my stomach decided to curl up and die. Every hit almost knocked by breath out, and the riffing was fast and brutal. I was seriously impressed. Jeff tore into to some awesome squeeling solos on the guitar with his wah pedal, he brought it straight sinister. Between Jeff and Chad, growling intensely into the mic, my head was thrashing away. One guy decided to start thrash dancing at one point, clearing out the front row.
Closing out the night was The Long And Short of It. I had heard so many good things about this band, and about Ben’s energy on stage, and to say I had high hopes is an understatement... And They Killed It! Ben dominates that stage, and is so animate, that he brings you along with his every word and move. This was great hardcore, just coming straight at your face. The band had such an awesome groove that got people jumping all over the place and Ben’s screams cut you up. Seriously, he is like a sorcerer controlling the crowd with his hands, flailing around and a face that looks like it is singing with more conviction and intensity than one can believe.

It was a late show for a Monday night, but people stayed to the end and were spent up in the energy. Totally a great night.

Thank You Thank You Thank You
Before I get to this weeks listings and a week's worth of overdue recaps, I want to thank everyone who came to the Casbah last night. I knew that the bands I put together were amazing in their own right, but I was completely humbled by the turnout and all the love. I couldn't have done it without Writer, Low Red Land, and Joel P West, but to all the loyal SD:Dialed In readers, you made it a truly amazing night. It was definitely the best Monday I've had in a long time, so perhaps I'm not so Anti-Monday anymore. Special thanks to Tim Pyles, Tim Mays, and Sezio for bringing out such a huge crowd. And, of course, my love to Jake for being my designated driver.
I hope to do it all again soon. And, just a preview, for those of you who stay in San Diego for the holidays, I'm putting together a show at The Beauty Bar on Christmas Eve, so keep checking in. Overdue Recap: Wolves in the Throne Room, Nachtmystium, Breakhouse @ Casbah
One thing I've really enjoyed about creating this website is the number of people I've met, via e-mail and eventually in person, because I've been turned on to many bands on a local and national level that I might have otherwise not been privy to meeting or seeing. So it was that a tall stranger came up to me wishing me a happy birthday at the Adams Avenue Street Fair. I'd never met or seen Evan before, but I was flattered and ecstatic that a total stranger to me reached out in such a personal way. Since then, I've gotten to know Evan a bit more and we've hung out at a couple shows and on October 13, I finally got the chance to see his band.
Firethorn was supposed to play the show but had to cancel and handed the slot to Breakhouse. While I'll admit that the bands rock grooves with a touch of funk were perhaps missmatched with the melt-your-face black metal of Wolves in the Throne Room and Nachtmystium, I tend to like the mixed bag we sometimes get for Anti-Monday League shows. Breakhouse started the night with high energy and had done a good job of getting a handful of their friends to arrive early to catch the whole set. John's vocal stylings, where his Carolina accent sneaks out, is powerful and takes hints from 90's rock like Filter or Bush while updating it for today, guided by Justin's heavy bass lines, Evan's guitar, and Loren's Rush-influenced drumming (and massive drum kit).

As for the rest of the show, I'm not going to pretend to know how to write about black metal except it's loud, frantic, thrashing, and I didn't understand a single word coming from either vocalist. I had forgotten my Ear Love earplugs, but thankfully found some foam ones I keep as backup. If it means anything, I was more in Nachtmystium than Wolves, though I don't know if it was just a little more melodic (for what that's worth relative to black metal) or they just had the better hair. Either way, I had a good time broadening my horizons and hanging with friends old and new for another Anti-Monday League.

Anti Monday League Feat. Joanie + Secretaries, 7.14.08
Monday night was time for Anti-Monday League. I got to the Casbah later than planned, but still caught almost all of Joanie + Secretaries' set. They were added to the bill late, for that reason they opened up the show, and played with a hodgepodge of bands. They played a full set and it was incredibly fun to watch because Joanie has a lot of friends in the music community, and thus had a lot of support, and additionally it was Ray Suen's last show in town for a while since he headed off to meet up with The Killers as he joins them for their worldwide tour. It was a playful and incredibly entertaining.
After the show I was hanging in the back and didn't even realize I'd missed The Feeling's Mutual, a band I've been trying to see for a while. I guess the band that was supposed to play second canceled so I got mixed up with the lineup. Anyway, once I realized it, their set was over, so I left the Casbah and went to meet Joanie and everyone at Starlite briefly before heading home and calling it an evening. Sorry to the other bands- I'll have to catch you some other time.

Port O'Brien, The Builders And The Butchers, What Laura Says @ Casbah 7.7.08
Yes, I'm only a week behind in posting. It's gonna be a busy week ahead so I don't know how much of last week I'll even get to, and admittedly, it's a little challenging coming home from a great show tonight from Joanie + Secretaries to try and write about what I was doing a week ago, but I'll do my best.
I arrived early to the Casbah for last week's Anti-Monday League because of Brooke's recommendation. She commented that she'd seen What Laura Says at SXSW and said they were not to be missed. Immediately upon my arrival I noticed one thing about the crowd- it was about 80% male and it seemed everyone had a beard. Thank god I've overcome by fear of beards (known as pogonophobia, according to Google), because all three bands were deliciously entertaining.
What Laura Says (Thinks and Feels) started off the night. Someone noted that they're 'a jam band for grown-ups'. Their instrumentation and harmonies were perfect. They even had a table of mixed tin cans and jars that they used as percussion. At times I thought that this was the band that Flight of the Conchords would be if they weren't a parody music act- if Brett and Jemaine took themselves seriously, they'd probably sound like What Laura Says. I was especially happy to meet them and their manager after their set, and then a few days after the show to get the promo CD in my mailbox. Love when that happens, and it's just as great as they were live. I just wish I had met them before and perhaps I wouldn't have been as shy as I was about taking pictures.
The Builders and The Butchers took the stage second and though the singer was beardless, kept the vibe going from What Laura Says. A little more serious, perhaps, but equally full and rich sounding. I especially loved the banjo and mandolin. There was something about them that made me think a tour with Two Gallants might really work for them- that emotive shouting with a slight quiver in the voice fit right with them. Plus, it would only take a couple more shows for San Diegans to find the right sing along moments to their music.
Any of these bands playing alone would've made for a good show- the three put together made for quite a fabulous night. Port O'Brien closed out the night and they continue to impress me everytime I see them. As if their CD isn't perfect (which arrived in the mail shortly after their last show at Beauty Bar), their live show just blows me away every single time they're in town.

What Laura Says (Thinks and Feels) started off the night. Someone noted that they're 'a jam band for grown-ups'. Their instrumentation and harmonies were perfect. They even had a table of mixed tin cans and jars that they used as percussion. At times I thought that this was the band that Flight of the Conchords would be if they weren't a parody music act- if Brett and Jemaine took themselves seriously, they'd probably sound like What Laura Says. I was especially happy to meet them and their manager after their set, and then a few days after the show to get the promo CD in my mailbox. Love when that happens, and it's just as great as they were live. I just wish I had met them before and perhaps I wouldn't have been as shy as I was about taking pictures.
The Builders and The Butchers took the stage second and though the singer was beardless, kept the vibe going from What Laura Says. A little more serious, perhaps, but equally full and rich sounding. I especially loved the banjo and mandolin. There was something about them that made me think a tour with Two Gallants might really work for them- that emotive shouting with a slight quiver in the voice fit right with them. Plus, it would only take a couple more shows for San Diegans to find the right sing along moments to their music.
Any of these bands playing alone would've made for a good show- the three put together made for quite a fabulous night. Port O'Brien closed out the night and they continue to impress me everytime I see them. As if their CD isn't perfect (which arrived in the mail shortly after their last show at Beauty Bar), their live show just blows me away every single time they're in town.
