Just an FYI that all shows booked at Cane's are still on. I just spoke with the manager and he said last night's show proceeded as planned. The only thing down right now is their kitchen and they're working fast to get it back up and running. "The news made it sound like you'd be out of commission for a while," I said. "Well, that's how the news sells newspapers."
So there ya go.

Fire At Canes Bar & Grill
Canes Bar & Grill caught on fire on Friday night. According to a San Diego Fire Department tweet, "Canes Bar & Grill destroyed by grease fire in exhaust flue and extended into ceiling and through roof. 600 patrons evacuated. No injuries." According to others, the first two bands had performed before the fire started and the club was evacuated before Eek-A-Mouse was set to take the stage.
As I mentioned in the listings, the shows for this week have yet to be cancelled/relocated, so I left them in for now, though most media outlets are reporting that the damage left the club with extensive damages that will require major reconstruction.

Weekend Recap: Old Man Hands, River City 3.13.08 & The Boredoms 3.15.08
Sometimes I feel like bands would gain more interest if they didn’t play as much as they do- over-saturation can be a problem. On the other hand, there are musicians who, as far as I’m concerned, don’t play nearly enough. One of those is Old Man Hands. Anytime they play, I try to catch them because they’re so talented and honestly, Gabriel’s is the only voice in San Diego that makes me cry on the inside everytime I hear it. Conveniently, they played at the Ken Club on Thursday night and I made sure to arrive early enough to see them.
There were quite a few people there, but honestly, it was the first time I ever wished there were less people in the room because the crowd was incredibly rude. Old Man Hands, even with a full band, are quiet, and their music deserves a hushed attentive crowd. Instead, they got a bunch of chatty people who took the bands playing as a sign to talk even louder. It was really disappointing to see a band a band basically helpless and they were noticeably frustrated toward the end of the set. It’s a Catch-22 for a band- say something and you sound self-important, don’t say anything and the people there to see you wonder why you didn’t speak up. Gabriel handled it as well as he could and asked, “Can you guys turn it down?” Despite the crowd, the band sounded great. Rachel wasn’t playing violin with the band on this night, but they still sounded lush with the drums, guitars, mandolin, keys, and my favorite, the accordion. I was also happy that my ATM is across the street because I’ve been meaning to buy their CDs for a while but never had the scratch on me when I’ve seen them before. They started with my favorite song, Slip Away, and played a solid set, mixing in a couple all instrumental songs. I don’t know what the last song was called, but the mandolin sounded so beautiful and really helped distinguish the song.

River City were up second and had a louder sound and therefore weren’t bothered by the still loud crowd, and for a Thursday night there were quite a few people in the crowd. It was my first time seeing River City and I was really impressed. I’m always impressed when a band switches around instruments, and in this case the female drummer jumped in and played bass to join in vocals and the bassist picked up drum duties. I’ll definitely need to keep an eye out for these guys playing again.

The Common Loon finished up the night but it was kinda late for a Thursday night- I don’t think people knew they were gonna be on the bill, so the room pretty much cleared out. I, too, only stayed for a couple songs. They were pretty smart and had put out some free CDs so I’ll have to take a listen and check them out again, too.

Friday night came and went and I took such a lengthy end of the week nap, that by the time I went to the Ken, I’d missed Secret Apollo, then got so caught up talking to friends that I missed The Airlines and Anna Troy. I’m really disappointed that I missed The Airlines because they made such an impression on me the last time I saw them. I talked to Blake for a while after their set and he told me they’ve been recording a lot lately, mostly in LA, but they also were able to record a couple tracks in Nashville, so I’m really looking forward to that release.
I did my ritual of going home and catching up on the past week of In Treatment. If you have HBO, I highly recommend this show. It’s really well done, the characters are well developed, and it definitely builds tension in anticipation of each new episode.
Now it’s Saturday and I’m sitting in The Boredoms tour bus. They’re from Osaka, Japan, and they’re playing tonight at Cane’s. I’m babysitting the tour manager’s three year old, so we wandered around Belmont Park for a while, rode the carousel, played some video games in the arcade, made a quick stop on the beach, then hung around Cane’s.

He briefly wanted nothing to do with me which was a sure sign that he was tired, so I carried him to the bus while he shrieked in my ear screaming bloody murder. It was pretty cute, to be honest, because then some of the band guys came in and he was trying to get them to take him back to his mom, but everyone went about their business and eventually he snuck off and put himself to sleep in his bunk.
These are some pictures from inside the bus.

His mother is gonna try and come in here in a bit so I can see the band sound check and hopefully take some pictures. The bands setup is incredible, with three full metal drumsets. They’re not actually playing until 11, so I’ll probably be babysitting well past midnight, which is just fine by me. Maybe I’ll actually get to bed at a normal time.
That’s all for now. This bus is swaying side to side because it’s so windy down here. Get ready for the news to announce “Stormwatch 2008” or some exaggerated gimmick. I’m signing out now so my battery doesn’t die.
postscript: I went in for a couple sound check songs while Toma's mom watched him on the bus, but then she came in the venue so I went back to the bus. Here are some pics from the soundcheck:

It wasn't until fairly late that I discovered the pass word for the satellite wi-fi, so I didn't get to post this until today, Sunday. We all ate dinner on the bus, though most of the band and crew were up in the front and I was in the back room on the bus so as not to crowd them. After everyone ate, they all slept for an hour before they had to go onstage at 11, and of course that's precisely when Toma woke up crying for his mother. He kept saying something that I'm sure translated to "I hate you" because he thought I was just being mean not letting him see his mom.
I took him outside and it was freezing, but he screamed for close to an hour, then finally the band went into the club so we went back on the bus and I entertained him for a couple hours finding videos on YouTube of Dora The Explorer, The Backyardigans, and a Japanese DVD he had. He'd cry between clips, but anytime music was on he seemed to be ok. The band finished about 12:30, but they all had to load out, so I didn't leave until after 1 am. It was an interesting day to say the least, and I was so exhausted that I actually slept in really late today, which happens frequently but not when alcohol hasn't been involved, so I'd say my body needed it. Now I'm all rested for the upcoming week. I'm gonna work on this week's listing now.

Guest Post: Greg Reviews The Hold Steady & Art Brut
While I was getting my local music fix on last night, a lot of friends were out and about- a few to see Film School/Eulogies at Beauty Bar and many to see The Hold Steady and Art Brut at Cane's. My friend Greg, who was kind enough to write a review for the Maximo Park show a few months back, was at Cane's and once again sent me a recap.
People always tell me that I'm the biggest music fan they know, but the truth is I'm barely scratching the surface. I love music but I'm so green; there's so little I actually know about music. Greg on the other hand is a specialist. His daddy was a big time DJ in the south, where he grew up, so he's been into music all his life with some incredible tales of legendary bands he met that rolled through his dad's on air show. You may not see him out at the local stuff too often, but you'll definitely see him around, standing up front with a pint of beer in his ball cap enjoying the music- and not once ever leaving his spot.
That said, here's Greg's review of The Hold Steady:
There are many bands out there today that can probably lay claim to the "worlds greatest rock band" and I have seen just about all of those bands that I probably can, but I am here to state right now that The Hold Steady is that band. Period. End of discussion.
Back in the 90's current members Craig Finn and Tad Kubler we're part of the Minneapolis indie rock band Lifter Puller; who gained plenty of critical acclaim at the time, but never really broke out and gained national exposure like a lot of indie bands were at the time . The late, great Joe Strummer was actually a big fan of the band and told Finn after a Lifter Puller gig once that they would be big one day; "but not as big as Pavement".
Well, I'm not sure if that was prescient foreshadowing by Strummer, and it took Finn and Kubler shutting down Lifter Puller, moving to Brooklyn, and going from an artsy indie rock band to a balls-to-the-wall bar band that they decided to name The Hold Steady, but Mr. Strummer's prophecy actually came to fruiton with the exception of one thing, they ARE argubally bigger than Pavement ever was and they have certainly laid claim to that after two classic albums (their debut, "Almost Killed Me" and their current album "Boys and Girls In America") and one very, very good album (2005's "Separation Sunday"). But it is the Hold Steady's legendary live shows that has elevated them to the heights where they are now and helped them gain a huge world wide following.
Their gig Thursday night at Cane's was just further proof of that. I have seen The Hold Steady 6 times over the course of the past 13 months (8 times total since 2005) and every show is just as mind-blowing, and actually keeps getting better; and last night's gig was probably the best Hold Steady gig I have ever been to. I know I say that after every Hold Steady show, but its the truth! The band has been touring almost non-stop over the past year in support of "Boys and Girls In America" and culled 9 songs from that album for last night's show , including a song that they normally do not include in their shows, but many critics and fans have called the best song on the album- "Chillout Tent". And yes, it sounded just as amazing live. Also included in the set were long time crowd favorites "Hoodrat Friend" and "Cattle and Creeping Things" from "Separation Sunday" and "The Swish" from "Almost Killed Me." The band is also starting to integrate new songs into their set lists, and last night they previewed three- songs called "Sequestered in Memphis", "Creepy", and "Discouraged". Hopefully all three of these songs wind up on their next album; they all sounded quite amazing.
If you have ever been to a Hold Steady show you probably already know that the absolute topper of their live shows that brings the house down every single time is the song they close with, the classic "Killer Parties" from "Almost Killed Me."; where they occasionally pull people onstage at the song's end. Last night was one of those nights and yes, yours truly made it up there again. It is quite an unbelievable and exhilirating experience that words really can't do any justice. You just have to be up there with everyone jumping up and down and revelling in the magic with the band to get that rapturous feeling. I've never been baptized and never really had a "religious experience", but I could only imagine that is probably what I would feel like. It was the perfect ending to one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Next time The Hold Steady comes back to town, do yourself a big favor and go, I pretty much guarantee that it will be one of the best shows you will ever see. Enjoy The Hold Steady while you can, they are what's totally right about rock and roll and makes going to rock shows the magical and life-affirming experience that they are supposed to be.
The show was officially billed as a co-headling gig with UK rockers Art Brut; who to me come off as the mischievious cousins of fellow Brit rockers Maximo Park and Kasier Chiefs, which is a good thing. This was my first time seeing Art Brut and I really thought that they put on amazing set as well. Eddie Argos is one of the best and most inventive lyricists in rock today, in my opinion. I am a big fan of both of their albums and their high energy set really did those songs justice. I really love bands who have singers who go into the crowd during the show, and old Eddie was pretty much all over the place at Cane's, even jumping up on rails and getting the crowd close to the the bar in on the action. I had read once that their live shows could be viewed as an ironic parody of British rock, but I really thought that they put one one helluva a straight forward high energy rock show. I know I will be seeing them again when they roll through town hopefully again soon.
L.A. rockers The Blood Arm opened the show. I really didn't know much about them before the show, but they really got the night off to a great start by delivering one heck of a set. Their singer was pretty much all out in the crowd as well, which definitely got them off to a favorable start with me. It will be interesting to see how far this band can go, I think they really have what it takes.
Last night was definitely the best night of music I have been to this year. My voice is shot, my ears are still ringing, I'm a little hung over, but last night was about what going to rock shows is all about and it is a night I will surely cherish for awhile. Until next time, take care and hope to see you at the shows!

Rodrigo Y Gabriela Cancel Remainder of Tour, Including San Diego
Rodrigo y Gabriela were supposed to play Cane's this Wednesday night.
Ain't gonna happen.
"Gabriela is suffering from exhaustion after a hectic summer/fall tour schedule and is left with no choice but to cancel the remaining shows in September. Advice from doctors is to take a few weeks off to relax so she can build up her strength.
"Gabriela's high energy performances means that she has to be in top physical health to perform to the levels people expect and that she enjoys. Gabriela will be taking a month off to get back in shape for the October tour." The affected gigs include two in California - Canes in San Diego (Septemer 12) and The Grove of Anaheim (September 13) - and two in Texas - Antones (September 15) and the Austin City Limits Festival (September 16).

BoH: Still Whining
So my favorite band played a benefit in New York on Tuesday night, 4 days after my incident. Stereogum wrote about the event and I thought this was too funny not to post:
Awesome.
Here's what someone commented and I swear to God it was not me.
My thoughts exactly.
A brief break later we got some Band Of Horses (or "Brand Of Horses," in Zach's world), whose set was full of Everything All The Time jamz ("Do I have to play this song again?!" big-bearded Ben asked before launching into a crowd-pleasing "The Funeral"), but also roped in lots of
new stuff (from their "southeast record"), a promising peek at their more hooky and rigid rock sound. Ears peeled for that one in October.
Awesome.
Here's what someone commented and I swear to God it was not me.
Ah, I love when indie bands act like it is a burden to play a popular song that
people really want to hear... especially when they only have one album.
My thoughts exactly.

Band of Horses Hates Me.
Update: Here's an article about the incident here from KPBS.
So I had quite an interesting experience at Band of Horses that resulted in a 4 in the morning rant on my MySpace. In hindsight, I'm less pissed about what went down and the truth is that in reading my rant was chock full of expletives which then makes me no better than the guy I'm calling a whiny bitch. He was doing what he does, I was doing what I do. Doesn't mean I'll be buying that October release or ever hyping or seeing the band again, but consider this your warning if you proceed to read my following MySpace rant:
There are so many ways to approach what I’m about to write that it’s been stewing in my head all night long. So I’ll just write and hopefully you get the gist of what I want to say.
First, let me rewind. Last year, one of my favorite discs of the year was Band of Horses’ “Everything All The Time”. I listened to it incessantly and was completely saddened by the fact that when they played San Diego on their tour, it was at the Epicentre on my 30th birthday and there was no rescheduling the party I’d planned at my house. I even went so far as messaging the band on MySpace suggesting that after their all ages and early ending show that they were invited to my party. Their failure to respond didn’t really bother me as I’m sure MySpace wasn’t quite their priority at the time.
Fast forward to tonight. Andrea and I scored free tickets to the show (Thank you, Owen!) and I sold off the ticket I had paid for, minus the service charges. We decided to have dinner in “Cane’s Cantina” with our 2 for 1 coupon. Dinner was decent though not great. My sandwich had more bread than meat, but whatever, we were enjoying the fact that we could sit down with some good chips and salsa while we waited for the show.
A bunch of our friends showed up so we completely missed both opening bands, which from what I heard, were less than impressive anyway. We made our way into the venue and maneuvered up to the front and I was posturing for photos. The energy through me was unstoppable, finally getting to see a band whose CD was such a big part of my life only a year ago.
There was a guy in front of me spying on my maneuvering who let me get in front of him because he was tall and let us shorties up front. Thanks a ton to that guy. But then there was the other guy who has only ever heard “Funeral” and was basically just taking up space with his ditsy blonde and somehow we maneuvered in front of him, too.
So there I was, up front, maybe two rows back from the stage, excited to see Band Of Horses. At first I took a few pictures, among the many people taking pictures. There were a few songs I recorded thinking I’d stick them on YouTube and whatnot, like I have with so many other bands before. About 8 songs into the set, BoH finally played “Funeral” which all the bros from Mission Beach and PB kept calling out for.
So there I am with my tiny Sony digital camera, capturing the song, and suddenly I realize I’m getting flipped off by the singer. While playing the super emotional song, “Funeral”, he flip me off and mid song yells, “I see you recording me.” I look around and at least 5 other people are taping him and he calls me out. Fuck you. I duck out and I am fucking outta there. There’s nothing worse than a fucking whiny baby onstage. It wasn’t bad enough that earlier in the set he complained about the sound and the mix, asking his band, “Should we keep playing?” Now he’s gonna be a whiny bitch about me recording his shit. Fuck him. I was outta there.
I was there long enough for the end of the song to come when he went off on some tirade about people YouTubin his shit for “profile cred”.
Actually, NO. I YouTube bands that I like, that I think should be selling more records than some shit ass band like Black Eyed Peas. In my small blog way, I would hope to turn people on to good, quality music, and several bands have e-mailed me to thank me for posting pictures or YouTube footage of them, and even link to me on their respective websites, but apparently Band of Horses is too fucking good and too fucking cool and too fucking awesome to accept whatever publicity they can get.
In a recent CityBeat interview, the band described being homeless and broke. In my own tiny way, I hoped to publicize a band to my readers that is still relatively unknown. This night made me decide that they deserve all the shit they have ever been dished in their lives. Or at least the singer, who apparently got a whole new band for his second album. As far as I’m concerned, he can go fuck himself.
Do not expect any future publicity here for the Bandaid on Horseshit as I’m now calling them. I’m really happy they’re playing with the Decemberists, known for being a cool as shit band, because it will be their biggest show ever and then they’ll fizzle and fucking head back into obscurity. That October release? Fuck you. Good luck with that. I’m not claiming to have any more influence than I do, but nobody likes a fucking dick and that’s all you were tonight. Suck shit, you fucking motherfucker. And while you’re at it, shave your shit. The beard is sooo overplayed. You’re not homeless anymore… or are you?
So I had quite an interesting experience at Band of Horses that resulted in a 4 in the morning rant on my MySpace. In hindsight, I'm less pissed about what went down and the truth is that in reading my rant was chock full of expletives which then makes me no better than the guy I'm calling a whiny bitch. He was doing what he does, I was doing what I do. Doesn't mean I'll be buying that October release or ever hyping or seeing the band again, but consider this your warning if you proceed to read my following MySpace rant:

$19.97: Wolf Parade @ Cane's September 14
My MasterCard is loving me today. Go here to buy your Wolf Parade pre-sale ticket.
They'll be at Cane's September 14, 2007. If it's even half as good as the show at the Casbah (was that last year or the year before? seems so long ago...) then it's going to blow your mind. Seriously.

Illinois: More YouTube
I uploaded another video from Illinois' performance Friday night, this one capturing Chris rocking the banjo in all his awesomeness, as well as Tad Kubler of the Hold Steady joining in on drums. They didn't have a setlist and this song is not on the EP, so if anyone wants to name the song, post it in the comments. Bear with the in and out focusing...the camera does it on it's own.

Friday Recap Pt 1: Truckee Brothers, Blitzen Trapper, Illinois
What a weekend. I only went to about half the events that I'd planned on, but sometimes plans are just made to be changed or altered.
Friday afternoon started off with a free lunchtime performance in front of the NBC building by the Truckee Brothers. In all the years they’ve been playing around town, I finally got to check them out without just seeing them in passing at some street fair or something. A good crowd of people came by their set and it was a beautiful sunny day and a good kickoff to what would be a great weekend. (The band is usually in a shaded area, but they're redoing the planters or something, so the band had this ugly backdrop. Hopefully that is fixed soon.)
After the noontime show, I headed home, made some calls, took care of my responsibilities, then took my afternoon nap.
The last time Illinois played in San Diego, Andrea and I met Chris, the singer, and he had told me to contact him this time around so he could put me on their list for their show with the Hold Steady. Even back then, there was the possibility of doing the Great Northern show, so I just didn’t think I would or could pull it off. After talking to some friends for guidance, they convinced me that it was ok to try to do both, that's what I do as a blogger.
I text messaged Chris, he put me on the list and gave me their set time, and Andrea and I headed to Cane’s with ample time to catch Blitzen Trapper and also to see Illinois again. This was actually the perfect stage for both bands as they could spread out on the stage and do their thing. Blitzen Trapper had seven guys on stage jamming out with a good indie rock vibe that reminded me of the first time I saw the Shins on the same stage. At times they had a CSN&Y sound that I liked (Listen to "Jericho" to see what I'm talking about).

Blitzen Trapper Setlist, Cane's, 6/1/07
In the back, the guys from Illinois were hanging out so we got to chat a bit before it was their time to play and once they hit the stage at 9:50, the venue was filling out and you could see the crowd instantly converted if they didn’t arrive already fans of the band. Chris had more room to jump around and dance and were even more impressive than the last time I saw them.

Illinois, "Headphones", Cane's 6/1/07
Unfortunately I did have other obligations so I couldn't stay and see the Hold Steady. As soon as Illinois finished, I was out the door and on my way to the Beauty Bar. Andrea decided to stay behind with Natalie, so check out her blog for her review and pictures. Also, Shadowscene has posted pictures here.

The Hold Steady Comment on San Diego
From the Salt Lake Tribune:
The Hold Steady are playing at Cane's on June 1. Illinois is? are? opening and they are a-maz-ing so check em out, too.
Even with a dossier full of adoring press, The
Hold Steady remains a scuffling indie band. Finding its music on commercial
radio is virtually impossible, and while you can find some videos from the band
on YouTube, you'll be hard-pressed to find them on MTV or Fuse. That's not a
problem, keyboardist Nicolay pointed out in a recent interview, since the band
doesn't expect critical praise to lead to full-blown rock stardom...
..."One of the great things about this band is
that every time we go out, you can see a noticeable increase in the crowd,"
Nicolay said. "San Diego is a place I always think of like that, where we've
played the same place every time we've been there. The first time, there was
maybe 40 people. The next time, there was 150, and the next was
300."
