It's been a Steve Poltz-a-palooza in San Diego of late, as he's been playing around town a little more than usual, pimping his new record Dreamhouse, and celebrating his 50th birthday with a huge epic show at the Belly Up. He played an in-store on Friday and those videos are uploading as I write this, but I was able to capture some videos at the Belly Up and thought I'd share them here. Steve Poltz CD Release: Friday @ Belly Up Tavern
My dear friend and occasional sddialedin.com contributor Steve Poltz has his big 50th birthday party this Friday night at the Belly Up. The party doubles as the CD release party for his latest, Dreamhouse. He made an appearance on KUSI news over the weekend that you can check out here. He's got a broken finger but the show will go on, and you can be sure that with a full Rugburns reunion and tons of guests including Mojo Nixon, Anya Marina, AJ Croce, Berkley Hart, Gregory Page and more that it's gonna be a helluva good time.

Steve Poltz "You Remind Me" Featured in Jeep Commercial
We've known for some time that Steve Poltz's song, "You Remind Me" would be used in a Jeep commercial, but it took a while to actually find it online, and there was some lag in the spot actually airing, but I caught it on tv tonight while watching the news, so I thought I'd track it down and post for your pleasure. I only hope for his sake that he struck a better deal than the one he got with Sycuan for his "minutes away and miles apart" jingle.

My music weekend recap
So with all my music recommendations, you didn't think I stayed home, did you?
My Friday started out with a burger and some beers at Rocky's which is the perfect way to start any weekend. After some in between time, Andrea and I headed to J Dewars Gallery to see the art of Peter Halensz. The bio said he was raised in SD, dropped out of school and lived on the street, on couches, and got into a drug and rock n roll culture. Being that he was in the scene back in the day, there were several musicians there. It made me realize how diverse the music scene is in San Diego. The art was amazing (though a relatively small collection of pieces) and Old Man Hands impressed me thoroughly. They had an accordion, mandolin, violin, guitar, and a drum box and had some friends help out with guitars in a couple of their songs. If I didn't have plans on Saturday night, I would've gone to the Che to see them again on Saturday. I met Gabe, the main vocalist and I look forward to seeing them again so I can pick up a CD.
After the gallery I went to the Rookie Card, AM Vibe & Rugburns show at the Casbah. I love Rookie Card...Adam never disappoints on stage. This was my first time seeing AM Vibe. Porter, who works at the Casbah, is in the band. They were really good, too. The Female vocalist reminded me of the Sundays. When Steve and The Rugburns came out, I have to admit I wasnt' that impressed. I've known Steve for 13 years and have been to a LOT of Rugburns shows, so maybe that is my problem- maybe I set the bar too high? Or maybe it's true that he's less "crazy" in his sobriety? I don't know but there was something lacking in the set and I wasn't the only one to leave early. I made it to the Ken Club for last call but the bands were done, so nothing to report there.
Saturday I skipped out on music. I didn't make it to Goldenboy at M-Theory. I did hang out at the Ken Club for most of the night (minus a couple hours at trivia night at Dennis') but never made it over to This Year Zero, Sirhan Sirhan, and Viva in Stereo, but it was loud and sounded good from the bar. The bar was mostly empty, so maybe people everyone was at the 94/9 show. I don't really know. But I guess we should be thankful we weren't playing shuffleboard at the Jewel Box.
As I wrote yesterday, Sunday was all about brunch, shopping, football and trivia. How was the beauty pageant? Don't forget to check out the Mints and Vinyl Radio tonight. It's gonna start early and it will be good. I promise.

Calendar
Until I get a calendar feature working on here, I'll preview the things that have my interest this week:
Tonight, Monday: Poprocks @ Beauty Bar. Two bands I've never heard of, but I trust Tim.
Tuesday: Sia, The Bird and the Bee, and Greg Laswell. Greg cannot disappoint. The Bird and The Bee have lots of indie blogger nation buzz, and Sia was great in her role in Zero 7 and has supposedly become more upbeat than before.
Wednesday: CityBeat "Best of San Diego" issue release party at HoB as Andrea's plus one, from 6-9 (with free food and beer!), then walking over to Hard Rock San Diego for the KPRI private listener show with Ray LaMontagne.
All of that is followed by Fifty on Their Heels at Pussy Galore, but I don't know if I'll have anything left in me.
FIFTY ON THEIR HEELS go on at 11....
Thursday: I'll probably stay home, but I'd like to see A Scribe Amidst the Lions, Get Back Loretta, and Goodbye Blue Monday at the Belly Up, but cost + commute +going out every other night= not freaking likely.
Friday: My best friend and her husband are coming to town, so it really depends on what they are up for, but I would love to see the show at the Casbah with The Rugburns, Rookie Card, and Steve Poltz playing solo. This may or may not happen, as I've mentioned.
Saturday: Shon Sullivan, aka Goldenboy, is doing an instore at M-Theory at 3. I met him when he opened for Neil Finn a few years ago at 4th and B and he was nice and I took a zillion pics of him. There are a shitload of shows that night, take your pick. I'll again, have to see what Neil and Alex want to do.
