SoundDiego: Aztec Brews Live Stream (and others are streaming, too!!)

It's been so heartwarming to see musicians, artists, yogis, teachers, and others embracing live streaming while we're all staying home and limiting contact. Aztec Brewing is going to be streaming artists live, and I wrote a little thing about it for NBC SoundDiego here:

Article: Aztec Brews Live Stream
Check out the livestream: Aztec Brewing Facebook

I'm also keeping an eye out for other streaming stuff, so here are a few things to save in your calendar:

"Same Same but Different Festival will be hosting a series of online live beneficiary concerts to raise awareness and give the community an opportunity to directly help musicians through this tough time. The first streaming concert will be held on Wednesday, March 18 at 7pm on the Same Same But Different website."

Seaport Sessions was scheduled, then canceled, then rescheduled to go Virtual. It will be streaming via their Vimeo channel on Thursday from 6-8pm with Tim Pyles hosting and Rowlberto Media handling the broadcast. Live performances by Low Volts and Dirty Sweet. (Please do not show up in person. You will be asked to leave and it will be super awkward for everyone.)

And if you're looking for some national acts, check out messages from Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie (streaming daily at 4pm here), The White Buffalo, Joe Pug and others who are committing to scheduled livestream concerts.

San Diego Newsy Tidbits

It's been a while since I posted any newsy bits, and since I don't have a lot of time before I hit two Christmas parties and at least one show, I'll keep it brief.

First, congratulations to my dear friend and colleague Tim Pyles (photo by Natalie Kardos) for being named the 2010 SubModern Host of The Year for his "FTP" show on FM 94/9. We all know he rocks, but it's nice for FMQB to take note and spread the word among the radio world. It would be super awesome if his show was syndicated to other stations, dontcha think?

************

A couple weeks ago, I posted about O'Connell's being sold. Apparently that report was premature and at the last minute, the buyers dropped out, so for now, O'Connell's is still O'Connell's. As they'd planned on moving on, there were no shows booked for December, so if you want or need a show in December, you might wanna hit them up.

************

Other tidbits- The Styletones will no longer have a Monday residency at Bar Pink come 2011. Though they'll still be all over town, those Mondays became a ritual for manyso be sure to catch them before the year ends. ** Word on the street is that Dirty Sweet has called it quits. With a long history in the San Diego music scene, I suspect they'll find new outlets down the road. **CityBeat reports this week that Seth Combs new venture will be a lifestyle site call GFYSanDiego. Presumably "Go Fuck Yourself", and with SDGossipScene closing up shop and heading to New York, I can already feel the target on my back from my favorite frenemy. Best of luck to Seth.

Daydream Nation Presents Dirty Sweet and more at FLUXX (Ticket Giveaway)

Yesterday Jeff chose Dirty Sweet as his "weekly pick" here on sddialedin.com. I thought I'd give a little more info and give away some tickets.

The show is presented by Daydream Nation, the new promotion company run by Eric Howarth of Hi-Speed Soul Records and former owner of M-Theory. He's the reason Tim Pyles and I got a tour of the club before it opened and why we attended the soft opening. The club has now established itself in downtown, but it is ready to experiment and crossover to maximize the amazing sound system and setup the club provides.

The lineup includes Dirty Sweet, Scarlet Symphony, and The Howls. Tim Pyles will be hosting, I'll be there, and other people are involved, too, like party hostess with the mostess, May*Star.

A critical factor for the evening for someone like me is feeling comfortable in a high end nightclub. As such, there's no dress code for the night, so you know I'll be there in my standard jeans and hoodie. There will also be art from Eric Wixon, Andrew Rymer, and Steven Suiter and perhaps most important to those of us on a budget, there will be beer and shot specials all night.

The show takes place this Thursday, June 24, at FLUXX, with doors opening at 9 pm.

Tickets to the event are $10 in advance here, or $12 at the door.

If you'd like a free pair of tickets, email me at sddialedin at gmail with the subject "Dirty Fluxx". Include your first and last name and a phone number. (Must be 21+)

An Introduction from Michael Klayman

Most of you probably don't know me so here's a brief introduction. I'm a huge local music fan and try to make it out to a rock or jazz show at least once a week. Most of the time, I bring my camera.

I usually refuse to be a guest blogger on other peoples' sites. I figure that if anybody's interested in seeing my work, they can find my blog. But when Rosey asked me to do some posts here, I had to reconsider. She has been a fixture on the local music scene for years, and has always helped me out whenever she could. For that I am grateful, and I'm honored to be a contributor.

Rosey got me in to last month's Birch North Park Theatre show, featuring Dirty Sweet, Transfer, The Silent Comedy, and Apes of Wrath (now called New Mexico). It was a fantastic show and I'd like to show a group photo from each band here, in order of appearance.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Dirty Sweet @ Fluxx Thursday June 24, 2010

San Diego Music Award winners Dirty Sweet will make their next live appearance this Thursday at the recently opened downtown nightclub Fluxx. Having never been there personally, it will be interesting to see how the band sounds in what the club notes is a "state -of-the -art lighting and sound system" via their website. The show is the first endeavor of Daydream Nation, started by Eric Howarth (former owner of M-Theory).

Dirty Sweet is carving its own niche in the rock and roll woodwork with the the release of their latest album American Spiritual. This is a record that truly reinforces the hard driving sound the band is known for. There is more variety within the LP and shows a band that is both maturing and ready to take their sound to a larger audience. Known for their frenetic live show, this a must-see event, so make the trek downtown to see one of San Diego's best live bands in a new venue. It should be good times indeed for those in attendance.
As a side note, there is no dress code for this show.

Scarlet Symphony and The Howls set the stage.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Transfer, Dirty Sweet, The Silent Comedy, Apes of Wrath @ Birch North Park Theatre Friday May 28, 2010

This blogger has been accused of only touting touring bands, while tending to bypass the local San Diego bands. I cannot disagree with those sentiments entirely, but I have definitely made an effort recently to watch more of our home grown talent on a regular basis. This Friday is your chance to catch four of the best bands San Diego has to offer in what promises to be one great show. As a bonus, the event is taking place at the beautifully renovated Birch North Park Theatre. Having seen several shows there, I can easily give my stamp of approval since all the proper elements are in place for a great live performance: great sound, lighting and comfortable seating in an intimate venue. Plus the cost is what one would pay to see just one of these bands much of the time.

Dirty Sweet has just returned from a European tour and have released a new album, American Spiritual. Transfer also released their latest effort, Future Selves, which shows more diversity within the songs. The Silent Comedy are gaining popularity with their energized live show. Apes of Wrath gets it done with fewer members, but their songs are so frenetic and catchy at the same time.

If you haven't been to the Birch, you owe it to yourself to support all these great bands as a great way to kick off the upcoming holiday weekend. This is a Casbah produced show, and the venue is almost all ages (5+).

Can't Be At Lollapalooza? Watch it Here!

While San Diego crafts our own little music festival, I can't ignore that little part of me that wishes I was in Chicago this weekend for Lollapalooza, which seems to have the best lineup yet. If you're not at NPMT this weekend, I expect it to be because you're at home watching San Diego bands like Dirty Sweet showing Chicago how it's done.

Matisyahu, Mason Jennings, Bassnectar, Pinback, Dirty Sweet, Pete and J and Jay Nash will all be performing - and all to help raise $500,000 to build a shelter to house the 2,500 homeless youths in San Diego. I slacked on posting but tickets are $40 right now, but will go up on Friday (tomorrow!), so I suggest you not wait.

The event takes place on May 2 at Mission Bay. For tickets and information, click the flyer.

Send an e-mail with "Dirty Sweet" as the subject. Include your full name and a phone number where you can be reached. I can't tell you how many people I didn't include in the drawing because they didn't even put contact info. Send the email to sddialedin AT gmail DOT com. 21+ only.

Hard Rock Hotel Presents: MSTRKRFT 2/28, Dirty Sweet 3/1

Surprise, surprise- I didn't quite get to all the writing I thought I would on Sunday, so I'm now even more behind than usual. I'll post about the shows I went to over the weekend later this evening, along with the full listings for the week, but for now, I wanted to remind everyone that I've got a pair of MSTRKRFT tickets for Thursday night and a pair of Dirty Sweet tickets for Saturday. I will choose my MSTRKRFT winner at random by 5 pm on Wednesday, so it's not too late to enter. (email sddialedin AT gmail DOT com)

I had the opportunity to do a tour of the Hard Rock Hotel this past weekend and I think people will be impressed. I had been to Sweetwater, one of the bars owned by Cindy Crawford's beau, but we know that I'm just not down with NY and LA style clubs in SD, so I probably should've just skipped that whole experience. This time around, we got to check out some of the conference rooms that will be used as concert rooms. There is supposed to be a full fledged music venue, but it wasn't really clear if it's just being held back or if plans somehow changed last minute. Of course, as Hard Rock's go everywhere, there is a good amount of rock memorabilia throughout all of the hallways, including a whole hall of Beatles and Stones stuff.

The first room we saw is called "The Edge". It's the corner of the building, as a music venue will hold about 400, and has beautiful floor to ceiling windows, spaced about 5 feet apart along the two external walls, giving pretty views of the convention center and 5th Avenue below. The room wasn't set up with a stage- but I'm pretty sure Hard Rock knows how to convert a room- so this will be the room used on Saturday for Dirty Sweet, The Silent Comedy, and The Sess.

The second room we looked at was a much larger room that can be divided in up to 6 separate meeting rooms. It's called "Legends" and is the room that MSTRKRFT will be using on Thusday night. There are large white panels on all the walls that look like TV projection screens, but in fact are part of the acoustic setup. We were told that this room can hold about 700 with the full stage. I imagine with all the staging and lighting and the type of music going down on Thursday, if you're even just intrigued by dance music, this is probably an event for you.
After showing us the main rooms, we went up to the Terrace, checked out the bar and pool up there, and the "rock wall" inside the hotel that has some of the most recognizable band logos in rock history, including some surprises like NOFX and OKGo,among RHCP, The Sex Pistols, etc. The wall is very visually stimulating.

I was encouraged by the tour of the Hard Rock Hotel. I was mostly impressed when our host told me that for shows, the bars would be handled differently then the regular bars. He couldn't tell me prices, but assured me drink prices would be reasonable (he read my complaints about $10 vodka tonics at Sweetwater). "We can't expect people to drop $20 for a concert ticket and then another $10 per drink."

The other thing that impressed me is that the venue is circumventing Ticketmaster prices by making their tickets only available at the hotel concierge desk. $20 even gets you into MSTRKRFT, who will be joined by LA Riots, San Diego's own "Shark Attack" DJs, and Walter Meego. There's also a live art show. The whole thing goes down from 8pm-2am on Thursday, with MSTRKRFT hitting the stage at midnight.

For Saturday night, $15 even gets you in the door to see some of San Diego's finest...Dirty Sweet, The Silent Comedy, and The Sess. Or you can e-mail me and hope to win my pair of tickets...

Either way, I hope people take the time to check out the Hard Rock for some of the shows they're booking. I'm a little torn, personally, because I had other plans for Saturday night, but I might try and work it into my plans because I think Silent Comedy will blow up that room.

Street Scene Saturday: Recap & Photos

When I woke up on Saturday morning, it was to the sound of a heavy downpour of rain and I was scared that Street Scene was going to be cursed. I waited for friend of mine to pick up tickets from my house, so I got to Street Scene later than expected. I was disppointed to see that the venue forced everyone through the south entrance Coors Amphitheater and around, two cars at a time into one parking lot, but I got over it because the weather had cleared up and I was in a good mood.

Entering the venue, I was pleased that I arrived in time to catch most of Dynamite Walls set.

The band was able to get me an artist guest pass for the day, so after their set, we went backstage to the artist area where I explored the areas. There were movie trailer lined up so that every artist had a private lounge, but they're relatively small so we went to the artist tent. We thought it was funny how Street Scene spelled the band's name.

After some time in the artist lounge, I wandered off on my own and watched Dirty Sweet for a while.

It was funny to see that people were lining up for the Pacific Stage which was the actual amphitheatre stage. Lining up was really unnecessary because there were very few times that the staff stopped allowing the flow of traffic into the pit, but the diehards wanted to guarantee their spots.

I caught a bit of Schwayze's set too.

But the appeal of Street Scene for me ended up mostly being the artist lounge.

Then we hung out with Augustana for a bit.

I caught Jaguares for a minute, too.

Then backstage again where I ran into Notorious R.U.G. and Kid Lightning

And everyone in the backstage seemed to like it that MIMS was hanging out.

Then I snapped some pics of Dirty Sweet.

Then I just kinda went crazy snapping pics-

I was having such a good time (maybe too much) that I didn't even really explore the other stages at the festival, with the exception of some of Ozomatli.

After wandering, we were hanging backstage and saw this, but it turns out it was not a real injury but was "staged" for one of the bands. I'm not even sure which.

My friend and I ended up on a stage platform during Jack's Mannequin, which is where I recorded that sketchy video that I posted earlier.

That is pretty much the end of my photos from Saturday. It was a great night, though I'm sad to say I didn't last for Muse. I was pooped and knew Sunday was gonna be a big day. I have to say that I was pleased overall with Street Scene. I will say that the guest pass made it amazing, but I thought the food vendor prices were reasonable to the general public and it was nice to use Coors Amphitheatres plentiful and spacious bathrooms instead of port a potties like the old days. I guess if I hadn't had a pass, I would've enjoyed the event a bit less because I would've grumbled over the $10 price of beer, but really if that is the only complaint, I'd have to say it was a success.

What I've been told is that this was Street Scene's final year. The reason LiveNation stepped in was so they could buy the Street Scene name, then bury the name, and replace it with a large festival of some sort next year and similar in scope. Maybe so, or maybe the word will spread that the people there had a great time and they'lll keep Street Scene in this format in the future.
