COVID-19: The Fall Comeback We Don't Want | Padres Take Down Dodgers in NLDS | Jan 6 Committee Concludes Hearings | Ballots Have Been Delivered |

Rocky Votolato at Black Horse Coffee Roasters (Taken 10.16.22)

I have been keeping track of COVID Twitter and it is not looking good over there. Just when I thought I'd be winding down talk of COVID, you hear about it sneaking back into our lives. You hear anecdotally about outbreaks, about people missing work, about tours canceling, about friends who are sick with "a really nasty cold" and I gotta say - treat it all like COVID. Whether it's a cold or COVID and just not showing up on a test until the fifth day, or the nasty flu that's going around, the whole point is when you're sick you shouldn't be out in the world getting other people sick. I wasn't able to get my booster last week, but while I was writing this I went to CVS.com and got an appointment for tonight, so I guess I'll go to the Zoo, get my bivalent Pfizer shot and throw in a flu shot with it.

As for me, I've had a pretty good week. I was bummed to miss The War on Drugs and Florence and the Machine but I need a little more advanced notice than just day of show. I'm old and have responsibilities which kinda kicks spontaneity out the door. Though last minute work is almost always accepted and when Darren took me to the Safari Park for a cart tour I of course said yes because the Zoo was already in my plans.

It was kind of a whacky weekend...I watched the Padres win and spent a few hours, unplanned of course, rescuing a dog in my neighborhood that got out in the rain. That was an ordeal, but he's safe now. This week is pretty chill, much of the same and a couple nights of work ahead.

Stay safe out there. It's coming back, even if we want to wish it away.

CoViD-19: Shoulda Woulda Coulda | CA Surpasses 500k Doses Administered In One Day | Guidance: You May {Travel, Eat Out, Party, Have A Wedding, Rock Out}, But Should You? | "In Support Of Shame": Padres Fans Need To Mask Up |

A camping shot of momma and Nadia and Roxy (Taken 3.30.21)

Okay, so I went a little nuts about a couple stories I read/watched yesterday, so I include some extra ragey rants at the end of today's post, partially for your enjoyment, but partially to purge it from my brain and body so I can process and move forward, at least until my next ragey rants. Read at your own peril or enjoyment or mockery.
For now, I'll say I'm super excited to watch St. Vincent on SNL tonight and since I really ruined my sleep beyond anything reasonable, I'm forcibly shutting down my laptop and phone tonight by 11pm and taking a ton of melatonin so I'll be up and energetic for my parents' anniversary brunch in the morning.
Until then, I will say the great news is that between Friday and Saturday reporting, 118,040 vaccine doses were administered to that HPI quartile 1 as the state topped over 500,000 doses in one day! This means that the state is only about 150,000 doses from 4 million in that quartile. We may not get today's reporting until Monday because of Easter, but I would imagine Saturday shots exceed Friday, add the holiday, and we're cruising into that Orange Tier with the new lower case rate requirement of 2-5.9 cases/100k. A lot of those new guidances don't kick in until April 15 no matter what, but that means more vaccines in arms, some time for decisions by local businesses about taking more grants/loans and staying closed, opening at partial capacities as food service places, or opening as bars or venues with super strict vaccine/testing requirements. It's not gonna be easy and today was San Diego's first day to day increase in hospitalizations in weeks, but that's the price we'll pay for opening. I hope we all proceed with caution and stay safe out there.

CoViD-19: CA Issues Event Guidance, CDC Offers Travel Guidance: Both Still Strongly Discouraged | MLB Pulls All-Star Game From Georgia | Another Capitol Attack |

A Sold Out Crowd at the Casbah (Taken 1.18.2020)

Man, today has been a big news day. It's been fun seeing all the excitement about the Casbah's quasi-reopening, new t-shirt, and there are going to be concert announcements next week which is kinda crazy. The Derek Chauvin murder trial continues and is incredibly hard to watch, another nut job 'stormed' the Capitol, killing an officer and getting killed after pulling a knife, Major League Baseball pulled their All-Star game from Atlanta because of their new voter supression law, the state of California released event guidelines, and the CDC issued travel guidance for vaccinated people, even though both still strongly advise against either --gatherings and travel, that is. I love how the news goes to the AIRPORT to ask people how they feel about travel during the pandemic. Obviously they don't really care what the CDC has to say about it or they wouldn't be at the airport, would they?

The sun is about to set and I promised the dog a jaunt to the San Diego River Garden. I have so much more to write about, so I'll do another post sometime tonight or early tomorrow. In the meantime, stay safe out there.

RIP Tony Gwynn 1960-2014

San Diegans and baseball fans are heartbroken to hear the news of Tony Gwynn's passing. I don't typically post death notices, but growing up in this city means that many of my childhood memories are intertwined with family outings to baseball games, and Tony Gwynn was the heart of our team and an icon for athletes across all sports. This is very sad news for San Diego. Coverage: ESPN CNN Sporting News

This just in: Chris Young Wins Online Voting for All-Star Game

From MySpace:
Thank you Padres Fans we did it.
Chris Young won the 2007 MLB All-Star Final Vote and will be joining Jake Peavy and Trevor Hoffman in San Francisco for the 2007 Mid Summer Classic.

Well, there ya go. The miracle of the Internet.

Newsy Bits: Red Pony Clock, ReelMandy, Hillcrest, Send Chris Young to Allstar Game

From MySpace:

Red Pony Clock needs a drummer for their upcoming tour. Come on... don't wuss out, Mr. Drummer Man (or Ms. Drummer Girl).::::: contact www.myspace.com/redponyclock ::::::::::

Well, the trip is only 17 days away. But if anyone's interested, red pony clock would still love to have a drummer on our 6 week tour. Those of you who said, "I could ask my friend, but I'm sure they'll find someone." We haven't, so please go ahead and ask your friend.

It's amazing how many people have thought it was okay to string us along forever, going so far as learning a set, only to back out and leave us high and dry. The darkness of the human soul just blows my mind.

We are fun people going on a fun trip around the funnest country in the world!! We will fly someone in, if they're willing to do some work at home beforehand. We don't need you to be the greatest drummer in the world. Just keep the beat and have fun. A percussionist or snare drum player would work just fine.

Is there really noone out there that can do this?

Gabe

Independence Break Recap: Avenue Q, Ken Club, BBQ, Padres

I don't know about you, but I'd like a couple more random Wednesdays off from work in the future. How nice was that? Sorry to those of you who had to work, we office slaves appreciate you bartenders, retail workers, vendors at Petco Park, and even the trolley security who called me "ma'am" while scolding me. I hope you all got paid triple time.

I can't say it all started off well. On Tuesday I was let off work early, only to find my bike with a flat. Fortunately Pennyfarthings was open and took care of me quick like and I was on my merry way (a new tube for $7!). A short nap later and I was on the phone finding out that someone has stolen my identity and attempted to make credit card purchases at a Sears in Leon, Mexico. Fortunately, Visa can be pretty smart and declined the charges.

After sorting that out and cancelling my account, I was back on my way downtown, scored some princess parking, then bumped into the House Party Girls, Amanda and Heather, out in front of Spreckels while waiting for Andrea. I got my tickets to Avenue Q from will call and Andrea and I found our way to our cheap seats in the terrace level of Spreckels which were so high, it took a few minutes to get used to the visual perspective. Chris (Republic of Letters) and Stephanie were there, too, so we had a little party up there.

Avenue Q lives up to every piece of hype you've ever heard or read about it. The only hard thing is that I keep wanting to tell people about it, but I'm like that annoying person who tells you the end of the movie, so I'm not gonna blow anything here, but assure you that (1) the puppets are potty-mouthed, but it's not gratuitous and it's used appropriately and (2) there is definitely "full puppet nudity". I have not laughed so hard since the first time I saw "There's Something About Mary" and caught myself slapping the knee of the guy next to me. With songs like "It sucks to be me", "Schaudenfreude", and my personal favorite, "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist", even if you're not a fan of traditional musicals, you should appreciate this one. The really incredible thing is how there are only seven people onstage, and three of them are sans puppets, but some of them handle two to three puppet characters seamlessly. It's particularly relatable to 20- and 30- somethings who are still struggling with "growing up" and finding your place in the world...basically everyone who reads this blog.

For your discounted tickets to Avenue Q, join Goldstar Events and get yours. The show runs through August 5 and discounted tickets are usually sold on a week by week basis. Also, better seats are also available at the 45% off discount rate if the cheap seats aren't your style. And, ahem, bring a flask.

The show runs a couple hours. After the show it was time to get to the Ken Club for Transfer and the Apes of Wrath. Sorry about the miscommunication, some of the posters for the show mentioned a third band, "Sea of Cortez" when in fact "Vulgar Herd" ended up playing. I missed them, but Chris is also the sound guy for the Ken Club. He hasn't been around much lately because his other full-time gig is at Humphrey's Backstage Lounge, but on this night, he played and did sound.

As far as the show goes, you're gonna get a hell of a lot better review of it if you go to Cullen's post about it.

And since we were next to each other most of the show, our photos aren't much different, though I'll still post a couple. What is different is that he's a musician and knows wtf he is talking about so go read his review.

Let me just say, I have lived in Kensington for seven years and been going to the bar as long as I've lived there, and in seven years, I have NEVER seen the Ken Club like that. It's been crowded before...every New Year's Eve is pretty nutty, and certain bands draw huge there, like the Spits, but this was out. of. control. Not in a bad way, I definitely had a good time, but I was glad to have left my hoodie at home. And it wasn't one of those shows that's crowded but half the crowd is ordering waters...this was a drinking crowd. So much so that the bartenders had to use plastic cups for a while until it got a little less hectic. Between Apes of Wrath and Transfer, Brett actually had to stop allowing people into the band room who hadn't already been in. At that point he asked me to take over the post and for about 20 minutes I got the fun job of watching the door and telling people they couldn't get in. Eventually the band started and the few people still waiting were able to pay their $8 and go in, but it only escalated the temperature of the band room that much more.

I'm not so into sweaty crowded rooms...I've had my share at the old Soma or friends garages and whatnot back in the day, so I only watched about half the sets of both bands. More interesting, and as Cullen pointed out, was that the crowd was different than a typical show, which kinda gives me hope that more people care about music in this town than I previously believed.

Anyway, it was a good night at the bar for sure, everyone buzzed with the energy of people who could drink without consequences on a Tuesday.

After the show, there was mass exodus of people heading to a liquor store for after parties and whatnot. A couple friends came to my house and not surprisingly, it was sunrise before I went to sleep.

My 4th of July was then spent at an afternoon BBQ at my parents' house until I hopped on the trolley to head to the Padres game with Sara. It was close to one of the most boring games I've ever been to, though it was a nice finish with the Pads loading the bases in the 9th to score a forced run at home off a dropped ball by the Marlins catcher for the win. The whole point of going was that I expected fireworks and there were none which was lame. From the game we traversed downtown to Sara's in Cortez Hill, watching the Embarcadero's fireworks from near the post office, which is to say we didn't really see shit. It was all ok, though. Can't complain about the day off. I was tired, she took me home, and it was sleepytime. Now it's time to prep for the real weekend.

Memorial Day weekend...the rest of the story

Another reason why I'd taken it easy on Saturday was because I had to get up on Sunday for the 1:00 Padres game. I'm glad I woke up relatively early, because my friend Sara, who had the tickets, was sick and canceled on me, so I had to find someone else to take with me. Matt said he could go, so we got the tickets from Sara, parked downtown, had the $6 burger and beer special at Maloney's (all game days) and trekked across downtown to the game. It was my first game since last season. Our seats were pretty cool, on Toyota Terrace between the 3 giant corporate suites at the field level and the radio and tv broadcast suites above them. There is only one row of seats where we were, mostly designated for people with disabilities, so it was pretty quiet, but we had a good time.

We were sitting right in front of Bob Uecker.

It was a beautiful sunny day, the perfect day to take in a game. Especially good because Trevor Hoffman got the save to clinch the sweep for the Pads.

After the game, I met some friends over at the Tower Bar for John Johnson's awesome BBQ, hung at home for a while, then met some friends out for a couple drinks. We met at the Turf Club but it was unreasonably packed, so we instead went to Bluefoot. When my friends decided to take off, I stayed behind and hung out with Peter (Roxy Jones) and my friend Little P for a bit. From there P and I went to the Zombie to finish off the night since he and I live close by. Happy to have Monday off, when I got home, I made it a late night, watching HBO OnDemand and some free music on Concert.tv. If you have OnDemand, I highly recommend watching the Jools Holland show with Stereophonics, Calexico and The Black Crowes. Toward the end, Kelly Jones of Sterophonics sings an awesome version of "Twice As Hard" with the Black Crowes. That was enough to knock me out and end my quasi all nighter.

I spent Monday with my family at my parents' house in Chula Vista. My sister and I busted into some of the old packrat boxes and I found some old flyers and stuff from concerts from back in the day that I'll post sporadically in the near future just for kicks. All in all, it was a pretty good weekend, I have to say. I hope everyone else can say the same. Now, onto a short work week...
