Shearwater & Red Pony Clock at Casbah 7.13.08

After chilling out at home for a bit after Claudia's birthday at Kate Sessions, I mde my way to the Casbah. Upon arrival I was told that The Donkeys had canceled because someone's flight was late or something rather, so there was plenty of time to hang out on the patio and catch up with some peeps.

Red Pony Clock played their charming nerd rock, singing songs about it being ok to be uncool, about being unpopular and being awkward. The band sometimes grows and shrinks, and on this night there were 11 people on stage. The lighting at the Casbah is problematic enough, but with 11 people onstage, nobody gets any good light, so I didn't bother snapping any pics. I do really enjoy this band, however, and enjoyed their set.

When it came time to Shearwater, I was there with only the knowledge that this was, at one point, an Okkervil River side project, and that, for me, was enough to go on. I go to a lot of shows, but this night was one of those specatucular shows, where I didn't know what to expect, I was in a chill out mood, and from the first note to the last I was completely captivated. I guess this was what I wanted from Fleet Foxes but with a sold out crowd on a Friday night, I couldn't get into the right place to fully enjoy that night. The music sounded great and the crowd was just the right size. In fact, the front row was made up of about 6 really tall guys who were tall enough that they didn't mind me moving around for pics. Of course it was dark and my pics still suck, but I appreciated their kindness, nonetheless.

I already posted video, but here are a couple pics and more after the jump.

Red Pony Clock, Fishboy, Aux Eutres @ Ken Club 12/14/07

I'm slowly going through writing these recaps nearly two weeks after the shows, so forgive me if I jumble up band names and whatnot. On Friday I was just happy to get home and take a long nap. When I woke up I had little motivation to go out except I keep missing the Donkeys, so I walked to the Ken Club in hopes of catching them.

Eux Autres were onstage and I liked their quirky pop. They'd go well with Secret Apollo and The Predicates, and since I only caught the tale end of their set, I hope to see them again. I was told that they're siblings, and I think they commented that they're originally from Nebraska, but I'm not sure where they live now...one profile puts them in Portland and the other in San Francisco. They played an original Christmas song that talked about going home for the holidays and everyone meeting up at the local bar. The song stuck out because they were singing about the champagne on tap. !!!. Yes, they said, it really exists.

I didn't realize that night that Fishboy was also a touring band (from Texas), but it makes sense because reading their MySpace puts them squarely in the Danielson Famile/Asthmatic Kitty style of bands which pretty much guarantees a party onstage.

I don't know how I totally blew it, but after the band I was hanging out, catching up with friends, and I went to check and see if the Donkeys had played and they were already done. I don't know how I didn't hear them or how so much time lapsed, but I guess I was just caught up. I did catch Red Pony Clock, and they're always a fun time, but I was there to see the Donkeys and I blew it. Boo.

The show ended, there were some shots served, and a friend of mine was stuck at the bar after being dropped off in a cab, so we headed to my house and he crashed until one of his friends picked him up in the morning. That seems to happen a lot in December...which I'll get to shortly.

Friday Night: Kite Flying Society, Red Pony Clock, Scarlet Symphony, Aleuchatistas, Sleeping People

Friday night I didn’t quite motivate early enough for the South Park Walkabout, but I did get Natalie and make it in time for Pussy Galore at the Whistle Stop. Kite Flying Society was already playing when we got there with movies running on a screen as a backdrop. It was that backdrop and the fact that the room was packed that I opted to keep my camera in my purse for most of the evening. Kite Flying’s set was of mostly new stuff that will be on their next release, tentatively expected to drop in September will all of it’s picnic-in-the-park style la la and ooh oooh goodness. It seems like Kelly’s backup vocals are more pronounced in the new material, which to me could never be a bad thing.

Red Pony Clock also played but by that point, the bar was even more crowded and I was busy talking with friends. It seems a kinda theme at Whistle Stop, that bands play the soundtrack to socializing versus being a “show” where every shuts up and listens intently (or at least should shut up). I like Red Pony Clock’s quirky indie music and hope they were able to get a drummer for their tour.

When the band finished, the dj music cranked up, and though it was Sunset Rubdown (or was that Wolf Parade), I’m not much for yelling over music, so I headed to my next destination. Natalie stuck around with her friends who would give her a ride since she lives close by.

I headed to the Tower Bar for Scarlet Symphony. There was a short line that disappeared while I stood outside talking to Dustin and Andrew. Inside, Mick made me a special somethin’ somethin’ and I made my way toward the front where Abraham let me scoot in front. Scarlet Symphony is engaging but even more than that, their big fans are rabid, singing along with every song and dancing their asses off.

After a few songs and a few bumps too many, I decided that I didn’t want yet another night of wearing my drink and made my way out of the crowd. After a few more songs, I realized how late it had become and didn’t wanna go overboard with another drink, so I called it a night there, too.

I headed back home, dropped off my car and walked to the Ken, where Sleeping People were playing. I appreciate their talent and all, but was more content sitting at the bar as the night wound down. I met Derek, the bassist for Aleuchatistas who was really, really cool. They were on tour from North Carolina. He asked why I wasn’t in watching the band, I answered that I wasn’t in the mood for what I thought would be proggy mathy cock rock and he said, “then you should be glad you missed us, too.”

Derek (Aleuchatistas) & me

Though, for the record, Devlin, the Ken Club bartender loved them, and he pretty much doesn’t like 90% of the bands that play there. No offense to other bands, it just is what it is. So anyway, a high compliment to the Aleuchatistas (who have also never received less than an 8 on Pitchfork, if that has any standing with you.) Derek introduced me to his bandmates, we hung out for a while longer, until the lights were on and the bartenders were kicking everyone out.

Casey was having an after party and the Aleuchetistas were staying with him, but they were still unloading gear, so the band came to my house for a beer, until Casey and everyone was back home and ready for them to come over.

I went with them to Casey & Danny's and everyone was pretty mellow hanging out, geeking out on vinyl and Rob Crow talking about…wait, I have no idea what he was talking about.

Anyway, I stuck around until I realized 5 am was rapidly approaching and I had to be up relatively early on Saturday, so I said my goodbyes and was on my way...not a bad way to start a Friday.

Newsy Bits: Red Pony Clock, ReelMandy, Hillcrest, Send Chris Young to Allstar Game

From MySpace:

Red Pony Clock needs a drummer for their upcoming tour. Come on... don't wuss out, Mr. Drummer Man (or Ms. Drummer Girl).::::: contact www.myspace.com/redponyclock ::::::::::

Well, the trip is only 17 days away. But if anyone's interested, red pony clock would still love to have a drummer on our 6 week tour. Those of you who said, "I could ask my friend, but I'm sure they'll find someone." We haven't, so please go ahead and ask your friend.

It's amazing how many people have thought it was okay to string us along forever, going so far as learning a set, only to back out and leave us high and dry. The darkness of the human soul just blows my mind.

We are fun people going on a fun trip around the funnest country in the world!! We will fly someone in, if they're willing to do some work at home beforehand. We don't need you to be the greatest drummer in the world. Just keep the beat and have fun. A percussionist or snare drum player would work just fine.

Is there really noone out there that can do this?

Gabe

Tuesday Newsy Bits: Starlite Lounge, Wilco, Red Pony Clock, Lou's Records, Lovedrug

Starlite Lounge "Unofficially" Open

I planned on going to the Starlite Lounge, taking some pictures, and writing it all up, but looks like Street beat me to it. It'll still get the Rosey treatment, but for now, just the basic info: Starlite Lounge is the new bar/restaurant owned by Tim Mays (Casbah), Matt Hoyt, Travis Murphy (chef) & Steve Poltz (Musician). The Starlite is located at 3175 India Street, just a way down from the Aero Club (a couple blocks before the Aero on one-way India St.)

Another Blog For San Diego

Every week another blog joins the fun and I say it's about time. A couple weeks ago, Tim Pyles launched his new "portal" for all things Pyles and now this week, Lou's records has launched a blog. Links for both have been added to my local links.

Lovedrug Trailer Stolen and Set On Fire

Many people are reposting this through MySpace, but I can't mention enough how many bands get their vans, trailers, and equipment stolen when they're on the road. Unfortunately, Lovedrug's trailer was recovered and was burnt to a crisp. Anyway, maybe you caught Lovedrug when they played San Diego with Sparta. If you'd like to donate to help them out, click here.

Wednesday Night Recap (Pt.2): Elf Power, Birds of Avalon, Red Pony Clock

I am not gonna lie. No sooner did I hand my $10 to the Casbah doorguy, I'd regretted it immensely. I was so tired my eyes were barely staying open. Red Pony Clock was onstage already and I love their mini-orchestra, switching instruments, and I like the way the lyrics sound like someone just reading from a personal diary. But man, I was tired. Still, I watched their set and debated in my head whether or not I was gonna make it.

In between bands, I was one of those people you always see falling asleep on the bench seat in the little hall between the men's bathroom and the smoking patio. I had my earplugs in, hood over my head, and just sat quiet until Birds Of Avalon took the stage. They were really cool, though no way you could think the singer sounded like anything or anyone but Robert Plant. The music at times sounded like the Doors, at times like Floyd, but his vocals were always undoubtedly Zep.

I was hanging on, trying to make it through the night. It was no fault of the bands, I was just wiped out. "Just another hour," I kept thinking to myself. Once Elf Power got onstage, that hour+ flew by. Their 2006 album Back to The Web was probably in my top 5 last year for just how many times I played it. They toured to back the release, but as far as I know, skipped San Diego, so despite being tired, I am so glad I was there and I'm so glad I stuck around.

By the way, this is only gonna be funny to people who know who I'm talking about, but what do you get when you cross Mike Kamoo with Win Butler?
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I thought from the album that there would be a lot more moog, but the live cello was amazing. The set covered almost all of Back to The Web and weaved in older material, too.

There wasn't a huge crowd there, but everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves. When the band came back onstage for a 2 song encore, it was a full on hippie jam, which was foreign to me, but totally funny to watch.

In the end, it was 12:30ish as I was walking out the door and after getting home and letting the dog out, I was asleep before my head even hit the pillow. This weekend will be a good one of rest...
