Things To Do In San Diego: February 18-19, 2015

When I started doing these listings 8 or so years ago, it was an attempt to organize my own life. I still enjoy getting a glimpse of music week to week so I can know where I have to be and fill in the in-between with where I want to be. But this week I totally failed. I did my listings late on Sunday night after getting home from 91X &FM 94/9 and I usually schedule them to publish at 6am on Monday morning. Well, last night, I was leaving the Merrow after Big Bad Buffalo played, and was going to go to the Casbah. But then I ran into my friend Tim, who told me the people I was hoping to see at Casbah weren't there. My Lyft was 0 minutes away and I had to decide where to go with a quickness, so I fire up sddialedin.com to see my listings and they weren't there! Nothing was posted! How could you guys not tell me (or ask me) where my listings were? It's super challenging to publish from my phone, but eventually I sorted it out. Please don't let that happen again. Things To Do In San Diego: February 16-17, 2015

So I've been laying low, but I hope everyone had a great weekend. To be honest, it was nice just having some time home with Darren and alone time while he worked, and I caught up on the week of email and feel pretty great going into this week. Huge thanks to Tim Pyles for letting me drop in on Loudspeaker and to TJ who let me drop in on The Local 94/9, and hopefully you got your submissions in to the Festival of Arts in North Park. This week has a whole lot going on and I'm hoping I get back to 100% so I can get back out and enjoy it. Tuesday through Sunday listings are after the jump.

Last Call for Band Submissions to Festival of Arts in North Park!

The Festival of Arts in North Park is returning on May 16, 2015. The free annual  festival is growing more and more every year. I'm coordinating the music scope of things to some extent, and we will once again be a multiple stage event. There are a super limited number of slots available between three stages, and between Dang and myself and a few other people, we are busy scouting and pulling from our databases to look at the best and brightest San Diego has to offer. However, to be fair, we obviously can't know every band in the region, so we're accepting submissions. The form is super basic and easy, and if you can't meet the minimum requirement of having music online to listen to, frankly you're not what we're looking for. This festival draws in excess of 30,000 people annually and we want bands on our stages who can keep the attention of all those eyeballs and earholes. TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY FOR OPEN SUBMISSIONS.

On a side note, I'm also not looking for any personal pleas. Do not text me, email me, call me, Facebook me to win favor for your band. Just submit the form. As the cliche goes, don't call us, we'll call you.

People always want to know what we're looking for, so keep in mind:

• This is a family friendly event, keep it clean (visually, lyrically)
• We are NOT looking for cover bands
• Bands with cross-demographic appeal (meaning my 7 year old niece might be as interested as my 64 year old mom)
• Reputation matters (in this small town, if you're a dick, we know about it)
• If you can't draw in a club or venue, you need more experience before you're festival ready 
• The three stages we're booking are typically indie, rock, pop, garage, punk. Acoustic acts should contact Alma at Queen Bee's. 
• The Festival of Arts in North Park is free community event to raise money for  North Park Main Street, which is a non-profit organization that benefits North Park in innumerable ways. If you're looking for a big payday, this isn't the event for you. 

Things To Do In San Diego: February 12-15, 2015

There is nothing worse than being ill. I have a too many friends with chronic illness and I just can't imagine because I've essentially been in bed for four days with the stomach thing that is going around,just after Darren and Nova both recovered from that cough/cold thing. Not glamorous at all. And you think, "well, at least I can get work done while I'm in bed," but when you're sick, you just kinda lay in misery, maybe zone in and out of Netflix until looking at your laptop lulls you back to sleep, but work is impossible with a cloudy brain. I literally slept 22 hours on Tuesday, when I was at my worst. I'm finally able to eat and so I believe I'm on the mend and can hopefully be back to normal by the weekend. But I'm probably too sick to make it to Barbarian tonight, so will you all please go show support on my behalf? Thursday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Upcoming Casbah Shows (With Ticket Links)

Since I have to keep a running list of all of these shows anyway, I might as well keep sharing this quick link cheat sheet with you. Casbah had a lot of shows added this week, both at the venue itself and around town. Spoon, Lord Huron and Little Dragon are all coming to the Observatory. LD doesn't go on sale till next week but I hear the password for presale is NABUMA. Doldrums and Moon King are returning with a show at Soda Bar, Jeremy Enigk is playing The Irenic, and my girl crush Courtney Barnett is coming back to the Casbah, and even Eleanor Friedberger is doing a show at Whistle Stop. My advice to you- buy tickets ahead of time. I don't "have the hook up" and certainly can't help your third cousin twice removed who only heard about the show after it was sold out. After the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: February 9-11, 2015

I don't know about you, but I had a lovely weekend. Darren and I had an awesome date night on Friday, hitting up Venice Pizza, The Hideout, Modern Times, Aziz Ansari at Valley View Casino Center, and Generationals at Casbah. On Saturday I worked at the Earthless show and then Sunday was a work day so I could get these listings done for you. This week has a lot going on between the school holiday for Nova, trainings and meetings, shows at Casbah and The Observatory, and the final week we're accepting submissions for The North Park Festival of Arts. I'm exhausted already. Monday through Wednesday archives are after the jump.

San Diego Harbor Gets Artsy: Nuestros Silencios (Our Silences)

Last week I saw a post by Steve Poltz about this art installation at Ruocco Park (the big grass park just north of Seaport Village at 585 Harbor Lane) and I had to drop by and see it for myself. The art is by Mexican sculptor Jose Rivelino and  will remain on display until March 15. It features 10 bronze statues and a giant box with miniature versions of the statues inside. It is definitely a sight to behold on our beautiful bayfront. Read more about it from The Port, The U-T or just go see it for yourself.

Things to Do In San Diego: February 6-8, 2015

It shaped up to be a pretty great week. Bob's memorial, while sad, was also quite celebratory and the warmth and goodness he exuded was apparent at the Casbah on Wednesday night and will stay with us always. Darren, Nova and I braved the beach, though sunny in La Mesa did not translate to sunny on the coast. Still it was peaceful on the mostly empty beach at low tide. This weekend has a lot of fun stuff going on. I'll be at Aziz Ansari (Thank you, FM 94/9!) and Generationals tonight, then trying to make myself useful at The Observatory on Saturday. Maybe I can snag some last minute tickets to Avett Brothers on Sunday, but if not, I'm sure it will be a fabulous and sunny Sunday to enjoy with my love. Things To Do In San Diego: January 30-February 1, 2015:

This actually turned out to be a pretty great week, despite poor Darren being so sick. I'm starting to scout for the North Park Festival of Arts, so I'm making a greater effort to check out newer local acts when I can. (DON'T SEND E-MAILS- there's a submission form on the website!!) Monday and Wednesday were both good local nights at the Casbah. This week, I also spent a lot of time with Nova in an attempt to give D a chance to rest, so we got a visit in with my parents and my nieces. I also caught Murder For Two at the Old Globe with Tim Pyles, Weyes Blood at the Hideout, and Crash Kings at the Soda Bar. Today I'm going to the Zoo with the second graders at Nova's school, am working at The Irenic for Brooke Fraser, then heading to Casbah for the SoundDiego party with We Are Scientists. Not a bad way to kick off the weekend. Here's to hoping Darren is up for a bike ride on Sunday when the streets of San Diego are completely empty for at least four hours or so.

Things To Do In San Diego: January 25-29, 2015

I'm not going to lie. It has been a rough start to 2015. Bob Bennett's passing hit all of us at the Casbah very hard. I've been meaning to write a worthy tribute but I can't get passed a first sentence. On a smaller scale, it feels like everyone I know is sick, including Nova who was home for the whole week and now it seems Darren is being taken out by it, too, and my professional life is scattered and I feel pretty overwhelmed at the moment. Hopefully it is all just a hump to get over and things will start to feel more normal, whatever that means. Let's look forward to this week of music and hope that things turn around for everyone. New Casbah Show Announcements: Father John Misty! The Decemberists! Two Gallants! and more

Despite all the upheaval 2015 has already wrought on my year, there are some really great things happening and I'm just trying to keep nose to the grindstone and be productive where I can. This week we added a ton of shows to the Casbah presents calendar, and as I mentioned earlier, there are fan club presales you should check out by artist, but if not, all tickets for the shows listed below go on sale Friday at 10am. If you're going to strategize, I'd recommend the Decemberists first, then Father John Misty, then any of the rest of them, mostly because they're ticketed through different sites and you can't just load them all into one digital cart. I know, it sucks, but as long as you're online early you shouldn't have a problem. They've all gone to great lengths to weed out scalpers and have strict ticket limits.

Things To Do In San Diego: January 21-25, 2015

When I started this website, I had no alliances nor allegiances, and when I'd hear something, I couldn't wait to spill it. Nowadays, my work means that I have to keep secrets, even signing NDA's, and it SUCKS ASS. I wish I could tell you everything that's been going on lately, but I can't. Things To Do In San Diego: January 19-20, 2015

So, what can I say about the weekend? Friday, The Observatory North Park hosted Curren$y and there was a massive turnout, so that bodes well for the upcoming bookings. After the show, I went to Bar Pink for a drink then made it to San Diego Freak Out at the Casbah which was off the wall and super fun. On Saturday, I mostly worked and lazed around and though I really wanted to drop by the Hideout, I knew it was a bad idea because Darren and I woke up super early on Sunday to canoe in the San Diego River Estuary for the San Diego River Foundation's Estuary Cleanup. It wasn't long enough on the water, but you have to work with the tide, but it was still a very satisfying contribution to the city we love. I did merch for White Arrows which was a great show, too, and if you missed it, you can at least catch Nicky Venus this Thursday at Bar Pink. I'm looking forward to the week ahead- Mariachi El Bronx and Waters both promise to be great shows. Monday and Tuesday archives are after the jump.

I can't say this week hasn't been eventful so far. My dad is back home and his health is much improved. Yesterday I got my termination papers from The North Park Theatre and today I was rehired by The Observatory North Park and I am nervous and excited and a little scared as I try to find where I fit in with this new organization. It was an absolute pleasure working for Midge Ure last night, too. So tonight I'm looking forward to date night with Darren to go see Pinback at the Casbah and then a busy weekend. Things To Do In San Diego: January 11-13, 2015

I don't know about you, but I have had a blast this weekend. I hit Soda Bar, The Hideout, and Ken Club on Friday, and then Casbah and Livewire and a super fun afterparty at the Lafayette on Saturday, and tonight I get to work at the Tig Notaro show, which is 8 tickets shy of sell out as I type this. This is going to be a very eventful week- my dad is supposed to go back home on Monday from the acute care facility which is great news, and this week the new owners take over The North Park Theatre and host their first show of 2015 on Friday. Remember when I was talking about embracing change and being ready for what the new year brings? This is the week that is put to the test. Sunday through Tuesday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: January 9-10, 2015

Well it certainly has been an eventful week. News is out about the new ownership of The North Park Theatre and as soon as I'm able, I will talk about it and what it means for me. Thanks to everyone who reached out to me via texts and messenger for all the support. It was also newsworthy personally, because my dad was scheduled to go home on Saturday, but unfortunately that has changed again, and it might not happen until sometime next week. I have to say it was pretty awesome working for Lieutenant on Wednesday night, especially afterward when we all hung out with the supergroup at Livewire after the show. So like, me and Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters) and Christian Wargo (Fleet Foxes) are totally besties now. (i kid, of course.) It was also being back at the Irenic for a show, and I'll be working again on Sunday (which is about 40 tickets away from selling out, so don't wait because Tig is amazing!!) Coachella 2015

Things To Do In San Diego: January 5-8, 2015

A new week, a new year, and lots of new shows. I thoroughly enjoyed having some decompression time the past couple weeks. My dad is doing better and has been moved to an acute care facility where they expect him to be for a couple weeks before he can go home. Darren's family visited for a few days, too, so we had some fun being tourists in our own town, then we worked NYE, which inspired our overnight escape to Tijuana. This week it is back to the grind for most people, and I'm just going to take some deep breaths and tackle the to-do list one item at a time. New Year Staycation in Tijuana

Darren and I decided to take a little staycation in Tijuana this week, which I guess is now a tradition since we did the same last year. I decided it was worth a post because we made some new discoveries and since my method of Googling + screenshots whenever we were in wi-fi seemed to be challenging, maybe if nothing else, I can refer to my own post next time we head down.

It was easy enough parking at my Mom's in Chula Vista, then catching a Lyft down to the border. We walked across and caught a cab to Revolucion. Usually we'd walk, but it was freezing. Hotel Caesar's is still just $37/night for a room with a king bed, so we paid for two nights, just to be safe. The rooms are nice, but you want to bring your own shampoo/soap and the towels are on the small side, too. We arrived around 7pm, and being New Year's Day, a lot of places were closed, so we just wandered south on Revolucion admiring the art on all the shuttered garage doors, hoping I could navigate us to Lupita's, a diner I used to go all the time many years ago. Instead, we found an open taqueria, Tacos Polo (Ave Revolucion 1928), and slammed several mulitas and street tacos. Back on the wi-fi in the room, I came across this post, by SD Hop Addict. I've been to BCB before, but nobody answered when we called, so we called Baja Artesanal which assured us they were open. It's a bit of a cab ride to Galerias Hipodromo, but it was worth it because this place had a great selection of craft beer (and a few non-craft, too) and the servers were super nice. We loved the Lupulosa by Cerveceria Insurgente and took a couple bottles to go. We headed back to Revo, had a couple drinks at Dandy del Sur and called it a night.

Andrea recommended Tia Juana Tilly's for breakfast, and though it's one of the more touristy spots on Revo by night, we enjoyed our chilaquiles, eggs, pancakes, and endless coffee. We had no particular place to go, so we cruised some shops, wandered some side streets, and eventually made our way to Pasaje Rodriguez to grab some more shirts from Mexican Fashion. We couldn't find Mamut, which just a year ago was a nano brewery in the same alley, so once again we searched and found a new address, Calle Carrillo Puerto 8161 (Calle 3RA, just west of Revolucion). Talk about growth! The new Mamut is up a staircase between a couple farmacias and torta vendors, just past the cheese shop. It has grown into a huge space, with a service bar at the top of the stairs, a wing with a massive wood fire oven and kitchen service counter, and an outdoor deck with several tables. We had the Red IPA, and it was good we did because when we returned later that evening, they had sold out of it.

Later in the afternoon, we caught a cab to Las Ahumaderas- Tacos Las Paisas (Guilermo Prieto 9770, Col. Gabilondo) and we bought some tacos for our cab driver, too, who helped us find BCB (Orizaba 3003) when we were finished gorging on Samurai and mulitas. At BCB we had a couple great beers, but it was freezing inside the building, so eventually made our way back toward the hotel, and had some mezcal (and crickets) at La Mezcalera (Calle 6ta 8267). Growing up, we went to Tijuana a lot, and my family always ate Tacos al Vapor from Cafe La Especial. The restaurant is no longer in its old location, but there's a little spot, it looks like a movie theatre box office, where you can still buy the vapor tacos. We grabbed a couple, went into La Justina (Revolucion 926) where they served craft beer by the bottle, and then decided we'd get more tacos al vapor, head to the room and get ready to head home. It was only about 7pm, and we checked the border wait and it was at 100 minutes. So naturally, we crashed out in our room for longer than planned, checked out of our room at midnight, then crossed the border when there was no wait at all.

It was a pretty great little jaunt, and I'm grateful for Turista Libre, and friends like Kristian & Carrie, and Larry & Lydia, and Miguel, and Andrea & Chad, who always post their TJ adventures. Hopefully this is the year we can make a better effort to head across he border more frequently.

Things To Do In San Diego: December 29, 2014 -January 4, 2015

I managed to carve out time to get this week's listings started. I say "started" because though I did them through Sunday, there are still some calendars for venues who haven't updated past NYE. As for New Year's, I didn't link to many of Wednesday's events because (A) I have loyalty to the Casbah and our event at The North Park Theatre, (B) because there are a ton of events that are for people who would never ever read this site regularly, and (C) because for me, family is always first, and with my dad still hospitalized (though doing unbelievably well compared to last week) and Darren's mom and nephews in town, I just don't have the time. Things To Do In San Diego: December 26-28, 2014

This week my lovely friend Tim Pyles posted about my site on 91X.com and there's definitely been more traffic here, so if you're new around here, listings for the weekend are below. For my friends and family that have been around for a while, I can say this Christmas has definitely brought the unexpected, as my dad has been hospitalized since Monday. It was looking pretty dire, but he's hanging on and talking and alert and he's looking much better than he did in the beginning of the week. Yesterday we brought Christmas to him until he was pretty exhausted and overstimulated, and then my mom stayed with him and we did dinner at my parents' house with just the kids. Christmas is here! It was such a great weekend. I saw The Pastorela at the Lyceum on Friday, then had a blast at the Casbah for Ziggy Shuffledust and the Spiders From Mars. Saturday was pretty sweet at the Hideout with Eric Canzona & The Narrows, and Sunday was a day of shopping and wrapping and geting ready for the holiday. This week kicked off with the Ryan Adams show, and despite the idiot couple who puked in the seat behind me, all was mostly forgotten as he played his two hour set. This week I also went to my Dave & Buster's for my nephew's birthday, went to Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo, caught Francisco The Man at Soda Bar, attempted a second trip to Adobe Falls, and also had some nice home time as it rained earlier in the week. And also, Serial ended, so I can get back to my life now. In case you hadn't heard, Lucinda Williams is playing The North Park Theatre on February 21. Tickets are on sale today at 10am if you didn't get the presale. The Casbah event at Silo was cancelled. Things To Do In San Diego: December 14-18, 2014

It's Sunday and today is Josh Damigo's first day as the host of the local show on KPRI, TJ's debut as permanent host on FM 94/9, so I thought I'd post my weekday listings a little early since. It has been a pretty awesome weekend so far and I'm presuming Darren will want some karaoke action tonight since he won't be able to do Ryan Adams with me tomorrow. Things To Do In San Diego: December 12-13, 2014

It was a great but exhausting week. The North Park Theatre and Casbah had me plenty busy as we announce tons of 2015 shows and try to make sure we get the information out and the onsales to work properly. Darren and I made a last minute decision to go to LA for tUne-yArds at The Wiltern and it was pretty great, since our friend Jake is tour manager and put us on the list with passes to the after show. But man, it is not cheap to go to a show, even when it's free. We got a hotel ($115), bought some beers and shots at the venue ($79 for 4 beers and 2 shots), then had drinks after ($48 for 4 small craft beers and 2 shots), plus Lyfting to and from the show ($18) not to mention gas, time on the road, etc., but it was definitely a fun adventure and better than any Christmas gifts we could offer each other. This weekend is going to be jam packed, with Wrex, Allah-Las, our NBC holiday party, College, and lots of work to catch up on. Friday and Saturday archives are after the jump.

I can't complain about the week, however, because of course it rained, and as an occasional River Rescuer, it was awesome to see water flowing through Mission Trails during a misty day hike and then again as we may or may have not trespassed to Adobe Falls. If we had, it was probably a muddy hike but probably the coolest thing ever with so much water flowing through the San Diego River. We also had some good family time despite the completely disappointing Coronado Holiday b.s. (TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS PER PERSON TO SKATE AND ADULT IS REQUIRED WITH CHILDREN UNDER 12!!!), and got to see my sister dance at her high school which was super impressive. Still, I'm looking forward to some good music and perhaps some adult beverages while we spend the weekend organizing, shopping, working, and choosing and decorating our tree. Speaker of the Assembly, Toni Atkins, has a very thorough newsletter. Some staffer or intern put a lot of time into collecting these events, and in no way am I trying to claim that this is my work, but they did a really good job and one would hope that the point of including these in the newsletter is to get the word out about free family events throughout the 78th District and County. Things To Do In San Diego: December 1-4, 2014

I wish I could say I had an amazing week off, but in reality I was mostly sick the whole time, so besides Thanksgiving with my family and seeing Hunger Games, I didn't do much of anything except watching crap television and working. I'm hoping to kick this cold soon and get back to the slow crawl of December. I'm hoping this is the month I finally clean out my studio to make it a functional guest space/office, but it's got a long way to go to get there. Tonight is our last show at the Theatre until New Year's Eve, so maybe I'll find some time to make some progress. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.
