Newsy Bits for Monday
Bonnaroo kicks Coachella's ass. Sorry for insulting your musical tastes, but I've never been a huge fan of festival shows. Maybe because I don't get high, I don't like being around people who are shrooming or dropping acid or vicodin or X, etc., and I don't believe in spending $5 on water. RHCP. Barf. Rage Against the Machine? Nothing will ever beat the time they played free at UCSD in the Price Center courtyard in anticipation of their first release. That was doubled up with an Inside Out reunion show a couple months later at the Ché Café before Zach dove head first into Rage. I can already hear the hissing when I say I was never a fan of the Police and I really only ever liked Björk in the Sugarcubes. Maybe any of my blog cred has just evaporated, but really I am just trying to make myself not care that I won't be at what is the #1 music event in Southern California. I know there will be tons of bands I'd wanna see, but I'll get over it. I'm not dropping 2 benjamins. According to the LA Times, other acts that expected in the lineup: Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, the Roots, Manu Chao, the Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Crowded House, Air, Tiësto and Kings of Leon.

In TV News: The CW is in discussions to keep veteran Gilmore Girls on the air for another season, and the network is high on a number of pilots in contention for next season, including a drama called Gossip Girl from the creator of The O.C., Josh Schwartz; and Wild at Heart, another drama about a New York veterinarian and his family who move to a wildlife preserve in South Africa. As for the rumors that the CW was picking up Fox's now canceled The O.C.:
"Obviously, it came up. But we really didn't think it made sense for us for several reasons," said Ostroff. "And we're excited about Josh's new show."

-The next cycle of America's Next Top Model will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 28 with a two-hour season-premiere.
-Midseason reality/competition Pussycat Dolls: The Search for the Next Doll will debut on Tuesday, March 6 at 9 p.m. (out of lead-in Gilmore Girls). Pussycat Dolls will pre-empt current occupant Veronica Mars for eight weeks, which will return in early May for the first of five self-contained episodes. Prospects for a fourth season of Veronica Mars will, no doubt, be heavily dependent on the ratings for these potentially final episodes. The CW is also expected to officially end veteran 7th Heaven this spring.
i HATE the Pussycat Dolls. I cannot wait for the Christina Aguilera concert to come and go just so I don't have to see that enormous billboard on the 163 south at University Ave.

**The Charlatans UK/Tim Burgess were my first "real" concert. Tim Burgess will be on Little Radio/Radio Perfik on Monday the 22nd - playing some tunes & chatting a bit...6-8pm (Pacific time) 2-4am (UK time). Listen In.

Weekend Recap: Saturday/Sunday
Such a lovely weekend, wasn't it? After hanging out with my sisters and brother in law at Old Town on Saturday, I headed down to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the opening of the new wing. The line was ridiculous to get in but Andrea is people who know people, so wristbands were handed to us and we were walked into the museum ahead of the crowd. I apologize if I gave the impression that drinks were free, but a friend called in a favor and for me, they were, all night long...
We watched Mr. Tube and for me it was their best performance I've seen. Maybe it was all the jackets and ties that made them look so spiff. Maybe it was nice to see them all in dark colors contrasted with the bright fresh white walls and high ceilings. Maybe it was just fun seeing all the museum members (the fashionable, mostly gray haired set) mixing with more of the TNT crowd (really? All of you are "members"?) It was a good time but six ounce cups do not a cocktail make so we left the new wing without seeing the Masters collection and crossed to the quad area where Ryan, Leslie and Rick hooked up the heavy pours and The Viewmasters entertained. They sounded great and the crowd was really into it, dancing and whatnot, despite the cold.
As the evening wound down, I parted ways with Andrea and Matt and finished my night watching the Widows and Dissimilars at the Ken Club, kinda. I mean I was there, but a couple more drinks and dodging this perv who wouldn't leave me alone and I had to call it an evening.
Sunday morning I awoke to a message from my sister so Andrea and I met up with her and my bro in law and Claudia, my godsister, for an afternoon at the zoo. I hadn't been in ages, not since monkey trails has opened and it made me glad to have a zoo pass. If you live here you have no excuse to not have a zoo pass. Sunday was a perfect day to go, too, because everyone was presumably at home watching football.
Afterward, Andrea and I had dinner at Chevy's (save your money) and planned on meeting up again for the 91X/Amplify San Diego show at the Casbah, but it wasn't in the cards and decided to save my energy for the Cold War Kids show tonight at the Belly Up. I'll be making my best efforts to meet up with some people at Pizza Port and snag a couple drinks at Surf N Saddle before the show if anyone is in the area. If you don't have a ticket, you should still plan on a fun night out at the Casbah for Tim Pyles' Anti-Monday League, this week featuring Bumbklaat, The Long and Short of It, Batwings and Cabrón and then head on over to M Theory to get the Shins album. Who says Mondays have to suck?

Coachella: BFD
I'm probably the last to blog it, but ho-hum is all I have to say. Crowded House + Arcade Fire= Good. RHCP+Rage=1993. I say BFD.

Coachella lineup looks power- (and pop-) packed
The reunion of Zack de la Rocha and his bandmates after a seven-year hiatus might be all the Rage, but pop fans will be just as excited by the news that Crowded House is re-forming and will play the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. Front man Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour are beginning the search for a drummer to replace Paul Hester, who committed suicide two years ago. Crowded House has not performed since its farewell show in November, 1996.
In a story running in the Times on Monday, my colleague Geoff Boucher reports that Rage Against the Machine will join the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bjork, the Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, the Roots, Sonic Youth, the Arctic Monkeys, Air and Tiesto at this installment of Coachella. Who will play which day has yet to be determined. Tickets for the three-day festival (April 27-29) go on sale Saturday.
As usual, Los Angeles will be well-represented -- with Satellite Party (the new project from Perry Farrell) and artists such as Silversun Pickups, Busdriver and Ozomatli lined up to play, according to a variety of sources. The contingent of English bands is also characteristically strong.
Most anticipated? Maybe Damon Albarn's new band, the Good the Bad and the Queen, which features bassist Paul Simonon (the Clash), guitarist Simon Tong (the Verve) and drummer Tony Allen (Fela Kuti).
Pulp front man Jarvis Cocker will be at Coachella too, touring behind a strong solo release. Up-and-comers the Kooks and the Cribs are on the bill, as are soft-rockers the Feeling and -- in the Whatever Happened To Dept. -- Travis.
More names as we learn them. Nothing on the official Coachella website or on the fest's MySpace yet.

* Car crashes into Zombie Lounge?- A friend of mine told me that a car crashed into the Zombie Lounge on Thursday night. Other friends who were at the Zombie on Friday hadn't noticed any damage so maybe it was just a rumor...I will find out and get back to ya...
*Congratulations to Two Word Name for winning their night at the Emergenza Battle of the Bands at Dreamstreet on Thursday night. Their next battle will be at Brick By Brick.
Last night I headed out to Scolari's to see my friend Berkeley's band Nautical Disaster play. The vocals were drowned a bit for the first two songs but once adjusted they sounded pretty damn good. Scolari's isn't my favorite place...the low ceiling makes me feel a bit claustrophobic, but I had a good time and will hopefully get to see the band at a venue with better sound.
After Scolari's we headed to the Ken Club to see the Muslims and Red Feathers, but a crowded night at the bar had me hopping from the band room to the bar so I didn't catch full sets. The Muslims play again tonight at the Beauty Bar with No Age. I will be catching Mr Tube and the Viewmasters at the preview for tomorrow's opening of the new wing of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in the Santa Fe Depot building. Free booze and desserts. Woo hoo.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend and I'll post when I get some good shit to talk about..

Friday Newsy Bits/Thursday Recap
Today, attached to my paycheck, I got an ad that asks, "Problems at home? There are solutions." Yes, we have an EAP (employee assistance program). How awesome is that?
Last night, I skipped happy hour at Bacchus because nobody else could make it. Instead, I headed home after work for a short while, then headed over to home of Catdirt and Catdirt wife, where we slammed some Tecate and headed over to Habitat House. We arrived during Sharon Van Etten's set. She was a solo acoustic performer that to me, sounded like a cross between Joan Baez and Aimee Mann. CDW said she sounded like Cat Power, but better. She had this awesome voice, despite claiming to be sick. The room was dead silent with people cramming in the door jam just for a glimpse. Some levity of the serious music came in the form of a 16 year old who "just (wanted) to dance and have a good time." After a bit of her dancing in the middle of the room, in front of the audience spread among chairs and couches and sitting cross-legged on the floor, Sharon stopped and asked, "are you serious? I mean, I'm really flattered if my music makes people wanna dance but it's never happened and I just can't do it." At one point while she danced, her cell phone rang and she took the call. The audience chimed in and the girl scattered for a while but kept coming in starting the dance thing again.
CDW and I took a smoke break on the porch and were promptly joined by the 16 year old who was clearly high who "just (wanted) to dance". CDW was being nice to her, telling her that the dancing was cool until she announced she was 16, at which point we were scared off realizing we technically could be her mother...and she was born in the 90's! Anyway, at some other point she complimented some chick's purse and said her mom has one
"exactly" like that but it has a mushroom on it and her mom feels bad using it at her AA meetings.
Sharon was awesome and when joined with backing vocals by her friend (Corbi?) she sounded even more powerful. Her set ended and then Corbi was on the mic and on her own, there were a few too many yaay-yays for me to handle. She played for a while and my interest was waning.
Finally Red Pony Clock started their set. I felt like they were Rafter-lite, but seeing Rafter in the audience made me believe that what they have, even with no mic, is better than my first impression was. The moments of dissonance and chaos made me feel initially like I was watching the band from my high school practicing, but it grew on me and when the vocals could be heard, I liked it. The singer invited people to dance and of course dancing girl made her way back into the room, this time with her friend. Her friend had this tight red dress on that made me feel like there was something illegal about her dancing for the rest of us. The band continued and the more they played, the more I liked them. (All 9 or 10 of them) I would like to see them again, with a mic for the singer, just to feel the full effect. Still, the show in a huge living room with hardwood floors and a cozy fireplace, a few couches, and random floor space, made the show both inviting and warm. Habitat, let me know anytime there's a show and I am there.
After the show I tried to catch the Go Getters at The Tower, but they had just finished. I'm not a fan of rockabilly but I love the music coming out of Sweden so I thought I should at least try. No luck, so I headed to the Ken Club for a final night cap before I headed home to catch the repeat of the Colbert Report with Bill O'Reilly. Then it was lights out. I am so ready for the weekend, whatever it may bring...
On to today's news...
*In reference to the question from CatDirt about the Viewmasters being back together, Amanda responds, "Yes, we are back together. Look for more shows coming soon... :) "...so there ya go. I'll be at the MCASD show on Saturday night to check them out and testing out the pear vodka.
* The Inside Track, hosted by Scott Riggs on 105.3 from 8-10pm on Sundays has been cancelled. You can read the e-mail from Scott on Chickrawker's site here. This bums me out immensely having only recently discovered the Inside Track, which I guess makes me part of the problem...since I don't listen to any ClearChannel stations (91X is technically not Clearchannel) I would've never heard cross promotion and whatnot. I hope that Garrett Michaels or anyone who makes such decisions jumps at the opportunity to acquire the show on 94/9. Or a daily feature like the Dog Dare? Maybe an hour before Big Sonic Chill?

Because of Coachella (presumably), bands that are touring that I would really love to see are not booking shows in San Diego but leave questionable gaps in their touring schedule, i.e. The Decemberists, who will be playing SF on April 25 and 26, then have a gap in schedule, and then head to Eugene, Oregon on May 3. Me no likey crazy 800 band festival shows...Street Scene is as big as I can handle and that is counting on 64% of the bands sucking dick so I don't have to trade off one band for another. I am so conflicted.
* Yet another great song that Indie 103 is playing: "The Book I Write" by Spoon from the Stranger Than Fiction motion picture soundtrack.

She had this awesome voice, despite claiming to be sick. The room was dead silent with people cramming in the door jam just for a glimpse. Some levity of the serious music came in the form of a 16 year old who "just (wanted) to dance and have a good time." After a bit of her dancing in the middle of the room, in front of the audience spread among chairs and couches and sitting cross-legged on the floor, Sharon stopped and asked, "are you serious? I mean, I'm really flattered if my music makes people wanna dance but it's never happened and I just can't do it." At one point while she danced, her cell phone rang and she took the call. The audience chimed in and the girl scattered for a while but kept coming in starting the dance thing again.
CDW and I took a smoke break on the porch and were promptly joined by the 16 year old who was clearly high who "just (wanted) to dance". CDW was being nice to her, telling her that the dancing was cool until she announced she was 16, at which point we were scared off realizing we technically could be her mother...and she was born in the 90's! Anyway, at some other point she complimented some chick's purse and said her mom has one
"exactly" like that but it has a mushroom on it and her mom feels bad using it at her AA meetings.
Sharon was awesome and when joined with backing vocals by her friend (Corbi?) she sounded even more powerful. Her set ended and then Corbi was on the mic and on her own, there were a few too many yaay-yays for me to handle. She played for a while and my interest was waning.
Finally Red Pony Clock started their set. I felt like they were Rafter-lite, but seeing Rafter in the audience made me believe that what they have, even with no mic, is better than my first impression was. The moments of dissonance and chaos made me feel initially like I was watching the band from my high school practicing, but it grew on me and when the vocals could be heard, I liked it. The singer invited people to dance and of course dancing girl made her way back into the room, this time with her friend. Her friend had this tight red dress on that made me feel like there was something illegal about her dancing for the rest of us. The band continued and the more they played, the more I liked them. (All 9 or 10 of them) I would like to see them again, with a mic for the singer, just to feel the full effect. Still, the show in a huge living room with hardwood floors and a cozy fireplace, a few couches, and random floor space, made the show both inviting and warm. Habitat, let me know anytime there's a show and I am there.
After the show I tried to catch the Go Getters at The Tower, but they had just finished. I'm not a fan of rockabilly but I love the music coming out of Sweden so I thought I should at least try. No luck, so I headed to the Ken Club for a final night cap before I headed home to catch the repeat of the Colbert Report with Bill O'Reilly. Then it was lights out. I am so ready for the weekend, whatever it may bring...
On to today's news...
*In reference to the question from CatDirt about the Viewmasters being back together, Amanda responds, "Yes, we are back together. Look for more shows coming soon... :) "...so there ya go. I'll be at the MCASD show on Saturday night to check them out and testing out the pear vodka.
* The Inside Track, hosted by Scott Riggs on 105.3 from 8-10pm on Sundays has been cancelled. You can read the e-mail from Scott on Chickrawker's site here. This bums me out immensely having only recently discovered the Inside Track, which I guess makes me part of the problem...since I don't listen to any ClearChannel stations (91X is technically not Clearchannel) I would've never heard cross promotion and whatnot. I hope that Garrett Michaels or anyone who makes such decisions jumps at the opportunity to acquire the show on 94/9. Or a daily feature like the Dog Dare? Maybe an hour before Big Sonic Chill?

Because of Coachella (presumably), bands that are touring that I would really love to see are not booking shows in San Diego but leave questionable gaps in their touring schedule, i.e. The Decemberists, who will be playing SF on April 25 and 26, then have a gap in schedule, and then head to Eugene, Oregon on May 3. Me no likey crazy 800 band festival shows...Street Scene is as big as I can handle and that is counting on 64% of the bands sucking dick so I don't have to trade off one band for another. I am so conflicted.
* Yet another great song that Indie 103 is playing: "The Book I Write" by Spoon from the Stranger Than Fiction motion picture soundtrack.

Thursday Newsy Bits
*No recap, once again. It's been so damn cold and payday is tomorrow so I promise more shows next week. But it was another tv night and Paula wasn't drunk on the second installment of American Idol so I channel surfed. The best thing about watching Fox was discovering that a new show called "The Winner" is starting soon and starring my favorite Daily Show correspondent, Rob Corddry. Hot.
*I also caught The Real World which is lame but after the show, the "Lazy Eye" video by Silversun Pickups was featured. I don't know how I feel about that but better than having to see the Pussycat Dolls stripping on a subway, in my opinion.
*Tonight, if you're home, stay tuned for TV greatness, when Steven Colbert is a guest on The O'Reilly Factor and then Bill O'Reilly is a guest on The Colbert Report. Keep and eye out for youtube clips tomorrow.
*Bad Marketing? The Spazmatics are an 80's cover band that have been playing at 4th and B. They are playing again next week. Admission is free with a student ID. Last night I got to thinking that the majority of college students are in the 18-24 age range (generously). People who are 21 (since 4th & B is a 21+ venue), were born in 1985, meaning they were barely entering kindergarten as the 80's ended. Are they really into an 80s cover band? I mean, maybe they've adopted the bangle bracelets and legwarmers and those horrible mid calf tights, but that's because they don't know any better. I'm just sayin...
* In honor of Lindsey Lohan heading to rehab, Anya Marina and Tristan Prettyman have written a song with background help from Greg Laswell. You can listen to it on Anya's MySpace page here.
*I missed this piece of news last week: FCC commissioners trying to find resolution to the payola scandal are considering a proposal by A2IM (American Assoc. of Independent Music) to force stations to set aside time for indie labels. My feeling is that it would be "crazy awesome". Maybe I wouldn't have to hear Red Hot Chili Peppers every 5 minutes. Maybe more independent artists wouldn't just tour the "big" cities on their small club tours (New York, Chicago, LA, Seattle) Maybe more of our local artists could get better exposure in other cities.

Kadan- Give it a chance
I did not make it out last night, unfortunately. Everyone I talked to about going to the Mr. Tube show had comments about the venue, Kadan. I just wanted to defend it a little.
When I first moved to Kensington, Kadan did not exist. Neither did Air Conditioned lounge. Kadan has been a ton of different places, but most recently Tuba Man's and Gorilla something-rather. When Kadan opened, it was the year my cousin was coming down from LA every weekend and staying with me. We took a liking to Kadan because of a bartender named Christie who was super cool, they had a clean bathroom (an important factor for chicks) and that they had PBR in cans. As far as I knew, it was the only bar in town doing that until there was a sorta PBR resurgence and it became kitschy city wide, but maybe I'm wrong about that. (PBR tall-boys now at the Belly Up! $6, a lot, but not bad when you consider a bottle of water is $3)
The bar is owned by a guy named Chris, who was one of the owners of Brick By Brick back when it was booking great shows, to me the most memorable of those shows being Fountains of Wayne. He is a hockey player and met his wife in the Czech Republic and she is from a place called Kadan, thus the name. Yes, the decor is a little medieval but it ain't no Renaissance Faire. Once the A/C lounge opened, I have to admit that I stopped going to Kadan because of the overflow crowd coming from A/C. Christie, the bartender, is gone now, her husband?/boyfriend? bought Brick By Brick and she is there now, but for me, if Kadan steers away from the DJ nights and has things more appealing to me, then I would definitely consider putting it back on my list of spots to check out.
In that vein, they've started "Bring Your Own" Mondays... you can bring music (limit one song per person, so make it good), bring your own board game, and bring your own food (potluck style), and bring your own friends to make it whatever you want. And all night $3 wells. Pretty awesome, if you ask me. And last year Kadan was the perfect final stop during "Taste Of Adams". They have happy hour seven days a week and good drink specials. Don't write it off is all I'm suggesting.
All that said, did anybody go last night? What were your impressions of Kadan as a venue for bands? (Remember not all bands have 10 people in them, too) Was there a cover? I wanna hear about it.

Man Shot and Killed: Police Need Your Help
This happened on Sunday after the game; I'm sorry I didn't post it before, especially because the shooting took place within a couple miles of my neighborhood.
CITY HEIGHTS – A San Diego man was beaten by one group
of men and then shot and killed by another assailant as he lay on a sidewalk
Sunday night.
Rudy Valdez, 25, had gotten into a fight with four other
men just before 7 p.m. in front of a home on 36th Street near Cherokee Street,
San Diego police said. He was on the ground when a man in a pickup pulled up,
got out of the truck, walked over and shot him.
Valdez died minutes later, police said.
The gunman is described as Hispanic, in his late
20s, bald and clean shaven, with a thin build. He was wearing a white T-shirt
and black pants.
The pickup was described as a raised, dark blue Toyota
Tundra, with big rims and wheels and a Chargers lightning bolt in the rear
window.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to
call homicide detectives at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS,
where callers can remain anonymous.

Alex of Swim Party is currently practicing with Kite Flying Society and preparing to hit the road with them this weekend for a mini tour. He says he'll play with them as long as they need him, however his priority is and will be Swim Party and he does not plan on being a permanent fixture in KFS. He may or not play with them as they do a weekly residency at the House of Blues Sidestage starting on Wednesday, February 7 and continuing each Wednesday for 4 weeks. Don't miss the show on February 28th with Princeton, a great band out of Santa Monica right in the same vein as KFS.

Monday Recap: Anti Monday League
If you didn't make it to the Casbah last night, you are almost forgiven because it was butt ass cold, but you missed a decent show.
Evervess was on first. Eric of Swim Party is a member of this band. If you're into shoegaze, Evervess is for you. I had flashbacks of high school and loving bands like Ride and Swervedriver which is pretty fitting since they are the first two bands listed as their influences on their MySpace page here. Grinding guitars and one of the biggest drumkits I've seen any local band use with the dreamlike singing of both guitarists and the bassist coupled with the lighting effect of projected liquid and I was back in 1991, and for me that was a good thing. Troy Johnson commented to me that the 90's are coming back, and I say better than the fucking 80s. Just don't start pulling out your flannels...
Talkdemonic was the second act onstage. The crowd increased...I guess everyone is accustomed to shows starting later. Keep in mind the Mondays start a bit earlier. The smoking patio was particularly empty due to the cold and everyone huddled inside to watch the experimental pair from Portland do their thing. The band is Lisa Molinaro on violin and Kevin O'Connor on drums, accompanied by a laptop (gasp!) with prerecorded accompaniment, such as bass, guitar and mandolin. This is an all instrumental pair and they played a long set of electro-acoustic and electro-classical music. They played a relatively long set and seemed to hold most of the crowd well.
Last up for the night was Dreamtiger. I've never seen them before and I really am not into slamming bands, but I really felt the vocals were weak. It was unfortunate, too, because any band with a chick on accordion would naturally appeal to me, but the vocals just didn't match the music for me. I raced home and arrived just in time for the repeat of "The Hills" season premiere on MTV which prominently featured Greg Laswell's cover of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" during the closing montage of the show. Good work, Greg.
Evervess was on first. Eric of Swim Party is a member of this band. If you're into shoegaze, Evervess is for you. I had flashbacks of high school and loving bands like Ride and Swervedriver which is pretty fitting since they are the first two bands listed as their influences on their MySpace page here. Grinding guitars and one of the biggest drumkits I've seen any local band use with the dreamlike singing of both guitarists and the bassist coupled with the lighting effect of projected liquid and I was back in 1991, and for me that was a good thing. Troy Johnson commented to me that the 90's are coming back, and I say better than the fucking 80s. Just don't start pulling out your flannels...
Talkdemonic was the second act onstage. The crowd increased...I guess everyone is accustomed to shows starting later. Keep in mind the Mondays start a bit earlier. The smoking patio was particularly empty due to the cold and everyone huddled inside to watch the experimental pair from Portland do their thing. The band is Lisa Molinaro on violin and Kevin O'Connor on drums, accompanied by a laptop (gasp!) with prerecorded accompaniment, such as bass, guitar and mandolin. This is an all instrumental pair and they played a long set of electro-acoustic and electro-classical music. They played a relatively long set and seemed to hold most of the crowd well.
Last up for the night was Dreamtiger. I've never seen them before and I really am not into slamming bands, but I really felt the vocals were weak. It was unfortunate, too, because any band with a chick on accordion would naturally appeal to me, but the vocals just didn't match the music for me. Woman Dies After Water-Drinking Radio Contest

A 28-year-old mother of three died from water intoxication after taking part in
a water-drinking contest for KDND (The End)/Sacramento on Friday. The contest,
Hold Your Wee for a Wii, involved drinking as much water as you could without
going to the bathroom in order to win the much-coveted Nintendo Wii video game
console. Contestant Jennifer Lea Strange died after drinking well over a half
gallon of water during the Morning Rave program, said the Sacramento Bee.
