The San Diego Music Awards returns to Humphrey’s by the Bay (2241 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego) on Monday, October 6th to recognize the diverse achievements of the talented San Diego music community. Proceeds from the event benefit the San Diego Music Foundation’s Guitars for Schools program.

The San Diego Music Awards are presented annually to artists and albums of exceptional merit in 28 categories. Nominees are selected by the San Diego Music Academy, which includes press (print, radio and television), music venue staff, and other key members of the San Diego music community. The nominees for this year’s awards are listed below. Online voting for nominees in each of the artist categories is open to the public between August 11th- September 16th , via the official event website at www.sandiegomusicawards.com. Album-related categories are voted on by members of the San Diego Music Academy. (more info after the jump.)

The 2014 San Diego Music Awards will feature live performances from some of San Diego’s best emerging and established artists including The Donkeys, Euphoria Brass Band, Joshua White, The Midnight Pine, Robin Henkel Band with Horns featuring Whitney Shay, Todo Mundo and Tribal Theory.

This year’s ceremony will also include a Lifetime Achievement award presentation to local blues musician Tomcat Courtney and an industry achievement award for Bob Taylor. Born in 1929, bluesman Tomcat Courtney shows no signs of slowing down. While growing up in Texas, his pianist father owned a nightclub frequented by blues legends like Sonny Boy Williamson which helped develop his lifelong love affair with the blues. As a young man, Courtney pursued tap dancing and began to perform in the Barnum & Bailey Circus and other traveling shows. Once he picked up a guitar, he fell easily into the rhythm of the Delta blues and never looked back. Courtney has traveled the world and made an indelible mark on San Diego as a staple of the local blues scene. Tomcat Courtney remains at the forefront as a unique and much needed voice in music. Bob Taylor is the co-founder of Taylor Guitars, celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2014. As a fresh faced 18 year old Taylor started working at guitar making shop American Dream. Taylor and business partner Kurt Lustig purchased the company just two years later and Taylor Guitars was born. Renowned for blending an innovative use of modern technology with a master craftsman's attention to detail, Bob Taylor is widely recognized throughout the musical instrument industry as the visionary acoustic guitar manufacturer. Both Bob Taylor and Taylor Guitars have been strong supporters of the San Diego Music Foundation since it's inception and Taylor was a major force in the development of the Guitars for Schools program, which is still a very active partnership between the Foundation and Taylor Guitars.

Tickets to the 24th annual San Diego Music Awards will go on sale on Monday, August 11th at 9AM and can be purchased online at www.sandiegomusicawards.com. Proceeds from San Diego Music Awards benefit the San Diego Music Foundation’s Guitars for Schools Program, which has touched the lives of more than 45,000 students in over 75 schools across the county. The San Diego Music Foundation also produces the San Diego Music Thing, an annual 2-day music and media conference in North Park, to be held on September 12th & 13th at the Town & Country Resort and Conference Center and venues around San Diego. The Foundation seeks to enrich San Diego's diverse and creative music community through music education for youth, professional development for current and emerging industry professionals, live performances for the San Diego public, and recognition for San Diego artists of exceptional merit or service.

Contributing sponsors for this year’s event include Blue Moon Brewing Company, San Diego CityBeat, Taylor Guitars, Deering Banjos, BMI, Bandzoogle and more. For complete event information, visit http://www.sandiegomusicawards.com.
