SD @ 140 BPM Recommends.............

Now that the election is over it is time to celebrate (or cure your sadness) with some great dance music.  Tonight Wednesday, November 7 at The Kava Lounge The Good Vibe Production presents Acoustic Minds, J*Labs, urBn:LgNd and Phunky Brewster with Live Painting by Ashley Bowers.  This is a night for the ladies as all artists performing include female members.  Acoustic Minds is a Portland based project composed of identical twins Jenni and Amanda Price who have been working on music together since the age of 3.  Their new project is a 5 piece band who take a live instrument approach to electronic, drum n bass, down tempo and dub step.  J*Labs will bring an original set with hopefully the same amount of energy that she brought to Electric Daisy Carnival, and local favorite urBn:LgNd will be closing the night out with a heavily UK influenced set.  Doors are at 9:00 pm and the event goes until 2:00 am.

Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Kava is an event so massive that it took two big San Diego EDM promoters to put it on. Elev8 and Dragon Lounge bring some of the best national and local underground EDM artists at the Kava Gallery and the Kava Lounge.  In the Kava Gallery artists include Stephan Jacobs, Nico Luminous, Osal8, Arkon, and Squama.  Anyone who was lucky enough to see Stephan Jacobs play U31 a while back knows that this is going to be one hell of a party, but it gets better.  In the Kava lounge artists include Stiletto, Miss Brisk, Geneveve, Asteya  and urBn:LgNd.  Come early to enjoy this massive lineup and grab a tipsy gypsy or any of the great drinks that Kava has to offer.  Make sure not to miss Stephan Jacobs a great multi genre producer from LA and Nico Luminous who is a producer, MC, beatboxer, DJ, and multi instrumentalist who mixes them all together live to produce some innovative hip hop, future dub, and bass

Tonight Friday April 20th make sure to check out Glitch Slap: Four, Two, Oooh!!! w/ Wyatt Purp, Misk, Wala, and urBn:LgNd. The event takes place- not in the main bar at "Kava Lounge"- instead the event is hosted right next door at Kava's Center for the Arts.  The larger space is great for the amazing art exhibits that will be on display including: S E A N D I E T R I C H presenting art, illustrations comics, live painting and whiskey; VIsUaLs by Owns One; and Circus Mafia Presents special guest STRYDER THE JESTER.

In addition this is a great lineup for underground electronic dance music.  The headliner Wyatt Purp is a bass music outlaw from Boomstone, Arizona, whose crunkadelic bangers will heat up the dance floor. More after the jump.

There are some great shows to see this Saturday, February 11:

First start the night out right at the Kava Lounge.  The amazing promoters of Dragon Lounge bring San Diego another great lineup of dubstep, future jungle, breaks, drum and bass, future garage, and glitch. MACRODOT from Arizona is headlining and will be closing out the night with his chilled up futuristic new age glitch.

Be sure to get to the Kava Lounge before 10 pm this Saturday night, not only admission free before 10 but you will also be able to see the Kava Lounge debut of local producer/DJ urBn:LgNd.  She will be warming up the dance floor with her sexy slammin garage/dubby tracks to get the party started and the bass a-thumpin.

After you start your night out at the Kava Lounge head down to Winstons in Ocean Beach to continue the dance party.  Freddy Todd is gracing our fair city with his presence.  One of the hottest producers out there right now who mixes dub electronica and hip hop perfectly into some pounding bass and great melodies that combine to be great music to hit the floor and bring the party.  This is one that you do not want to miss.

School of Rock presents San Diego Legends

[I've been chatting with my friend Tyler a lot this week about a couple of School of Rock shows coming up this weekend. The kids are super talented and under the direction of Tyler and Chris are obviously in very good hands when it comes to training and guidance. Below is Tyler's plug for some shows this weekend. It would be awesome if the music community rallied around the shows this weekend, and even cooler if bands that are being covered would come check out the kids performing their music. Below is from Tyler Ward, General Manager and Music Director of the School of Rock, San Diego.- rosey]

I don't like being "that guy" who always blabs about my job, but if you've seen me lately, I can't talk about anything else. The School of Rock is putting on a San Diego themed show and I couldn't be more excited. In case you don't know about the school, it's a music program for kids that not only teaches lessons, but puts on themed concerts. This time around, it's a love-letter to our village and the kids are playing songs by: Rocket From The Crypt, Three Mile Pilot, Pinback, Drive Like Jehu, Buck-O-Nine, Heavy Vegetable, Unwritten Law, Louis XIV, The Zeros, Unbroken, Black Heart Procession, Beat Farmers, fluf, and more.

The shows are taking place at the historic SD venues, The Kava Lounge (old Casbah) and the SD Women's Club, and we may have some very special guests play with the kids. The Kava is so small that it will sell out, but the Women's Club has plenty of room. Both shows start early enough that you can still go out afterward.

Who said Mondays have to suck? Gogol Bordello, Wilco, Anti-Monday League

There's plenty of good stuff to make your Monday matter. There's the sold-out Gogol Bordello show at House of Blues, the Wilco show at the OAT, Anti-Monday League at the Casbah featuring Chow Nasty, Bad Credit, MC Flow and David Vaughn, and I have it on good authority that Gogol Bordello will be at the Kava Lounge after their show doing a DJ set, but even if they don't, check out San Diego's answer to Gogol in Di Nigunim. C'mon, what kinda boss would question you calling in sick on a Tuesday?

Check back later for my full listings for the week.

CD Review: Mad Juana

Did anybody else watch Rock Star:Supernova? Will anyone else admit to it? If you did watch, you had your favorite, and for most of the season, mine was Delana, with her sexy and haunting vocals, I thought she was too good for that band of hasbeens. I mean, it's all relative...it was a reality show after all, but I thought she had talent.

Enter Mad Juana. Described in their press release as "bohemian gypsy music", the strong female vocals remind me of Delana...or maybe Siouxsie Sioux is a more apropos and tangible reference. The layered instrumentation adds to the gypsy style, but I'm actually more into the track done in Spanish called "La Llorona" (loosely 'The Woman Crier, subject of many Mexican fables) with heavy strings giving it a dramatic flamenco flair. The album is called "Acoustic Voodoo" and brings to mind images of candles and incense and spells and seduction.

Mad Juana are playing at Kava Lounge on Wednesday. I'll be at SDSC, but I will give my CD to the first person to promise to go to the show and take a couple pics and write a blurb about it.
