We need witnesses.
Also, we need a camera to take some pictures this afternoon.
We are working on the bail money too. Any donations are greatly appreciated.

Recap: Nautical DIsaster, Hollywood Begs, Firethorn, etc
It's Friday and I'm barely getting around to writing about Monday. Guess I've been taking a bit of a blog vacation. I did still want to post the pics from Monday night, however, because the show was a whole lot of fun.
It had been a long time since I saw Nautical Disaster. The last time I saw them was at Scolari's, before the soundsystem upgrade there. With so much more time and shows under their belt and Jake on sound at the Casbah, they really impressed. I already mentioned how Beezeley dedicated a song to me and Tim Pyles, so it was that much cooler for me.

Hollywood Begs was up third (I missed the opening band, by the way). There was a really great turnout for the night which says a lot about the lineup. While they're not all regulars on the Casbah stage, these three bands do the legwork with self promotion and playing shows at a wider range of venues, so they each brought in their own following on top of the people who are there at almost every Anti-Monday League show. It was also Hollywood Begs' last show in San Diego as they're dissolving because of a move to Seattle. They were really great and will be missed locally.

It was an all around fun night and Firethorn closed out the show with their brand of rock n roll that is always fun to watch, especially with Sean's fro bopping along with the music. They've been playing shows relentlessly in town and in LA, as well, so they're really excited about the next year and getting more of their music to the masses. Plus, it's hard to find nicer guys. They really appreciate each and every person who comes out to their shows.

The rest of the week has been relatively calm for me. Tuesday I got to do my photo shoot for work which was fun as my coworker and I traversed the county taking pics and jumping out in random places to catch San Diego landmarks like the zoo, Belmont Park, Sea World, The Del, and various lookout points. We even cruised Windansea and the Bird Rock area which I hadn't really done since high school.
I also got some shopping in this week, hoping to beat the Black Friday chaos, had dinner with my family on both Wednesday and Thursday, and just hanging around the neighborhood, getting a couple good nights of drinking with my neighborhood friends at the Ken Club. Now it's Friday and I plan on shutting down this computer while I ready my Christmas decorations, then hitting up the Tower Bar tonight.
I do have a lot of work to do this weekend as well, so I need to fit that in along with writing my next column for CB, so if you've got band news, please send it my way. I hope everyone has had a great weekend so far and I hope to see a lot of you out tonight and again on Sunday at the Casbah for the free Local 94/9 show and to celebrate Andrea's birthday. Be there...

Google Hit of The Day: "Skanky Whores"
I like to check in on my sitemeter every once in a while to see what people are googling to get to my site. Lately it's been a lot of "Holiday Hootenanny", "Things to Do In San Diego" and "Nightmare Before X-mas", as well as a lot of referrals since Band of Horses was recently in the news and Pitchfork still has my link associated with the band.
But today, somebody Googled "skanky whores" and hit my site, which was 6th on the list. That just made my day. Welcome to my site to whomever it was searchin for skanky whores. I mean, with the holidays coming up, who isn't looking for skanky whores?

YouTube: Synchronized Swimming to Feist 1-2-3-4
Today was a long day after a long night last night, and my eyes are wonky so I'm gonna have to wait to post my pics from last night until tomorrow while my body recharges, but in the meantime, I wanted to post this video. It came from a publicist, so it's not like I was surfing YouTube or anything, but synchronized swimming has always been one of those sports that I realize must be really difficult, but for me it still looks kinda silly. I kinda giggled throughout this video, but maybe it's just the tired in me.
Synchronized Swimming to Feist 1-2-3-4
I'll be off early tomorrow then enjoying my 4 day weekend, so I'll still be posting if you wanna click back over the weekend. Or just come out to the Ken Club tomorrow for the pre-Thanksgiving tradition of getting completely shitfaced. Gotta love the holidays.

Nautical Disaster Responds to "Poo-pooing On The Scene"
After all that Voice of San Diego stuff last week, and all the people hating on the San Diego scene, Beezeley of Nautical Disaster wrote a song that the band performed at last night's Anti-Monday League. It was seriously rad and a shit ton of people came out for the show, yet again proving that local bands can draw. I'll recap it later with photos, but in the meantime, here are the lyrics from Nautical Disaster.
"Rock 'N Roll will Kill You!"
Well you're bored by this Town
and the same old Sound,
Nothing's touched you
since you left the "Underground."
Well there's talk talk talk
about how to make it better
but no walk walk walk
just the whining of the Haters
and we're just so sick of it!
There's a Rock 'N Roll Sound
you should really check out.
It's above all the shit,
it'll make you wanna shout:
No more talk talk talk
you're just bringing us down!
C'mon Rock Rock Rock
We're gonna torch this town!
C'mon, let's get out of it!
Well it all goes around
like some Suicide Crown
and you're not moving forward
if you're just standing your ground
and I'd rather get kicked
like some rodeo clown (this line borrowed from Eric Bachman)
then to hear more complaining
about my Home Town!
So no more talk talk talk
just leave us alone!
With our Rock Rock Rock
We'll cut it to the bone!
C'mon, let's get out of it!

Poll: If I Were You
Since Troy Johnson's departure from CityBeat, the "If I Were You" column has been passed around to several freelancers and staff writers. Many people have commented to me about the state of the column of late. A few people have asked me why I don't do it. The truth is, it's a very hard column to write and I just don't have the time, and I think there are people who can do a better job than I ever could. I'm not suggesting I have any say or even that it's been offered to me, but with a new editor at the weekly, my recommendation is that if you have an opinion about the direction of the music section of the paper, then you should write an email or letter to the editor and give your opinion and help shape the direction the paper takes. You have a voice and CityBeat prides itself on listening.
In the meantime, I've added an opinion poll on the right hand side of this site just for the fun of it. Let me know who you think should be doing the column.

San Diego Sightseeing
I have been busy, busy, busy since I started my new job- working full-time and even plenty of overtime on top of my usual blogging/show going all the while working in my CityBeat column. Sometimes, like last night, it means staying home and missing a great show- like Sea Wolf :( But I'm not complaining...this week is a short work week and I got the coolest job assignment for tomorrow. And I need your help.
My agency is pitching a major automaker, so my assignment is to get a rental car from the automaker and drive around the city, taking pictures of the vehicle in spots that are representative of San Diego and the "San Diego lifestyle". I have plenty of ideas, but I'm a little concerned with finding spots where I can legally park, capturing the vehicle and the hot spots in the background. If this was your task, where would you go? I'm open to all ideas and suggestions. And the bonus is that any photos we don't use for the pitch will be posted here, so the task is really two fold. Really, what could be more fun than driving around a new vehicle in this city that I love, taking pictures of the places I love, all the while getting paid and getting to expense a lovely lunch?
It's one thing to not dread going to work in the morning. It's another entirely to actually look forward to getting to work. What a total 180 from four months ago.
Leave your comments on the spots that represent this place that we call home...

Jose Gonzalez Goodies
From a Jose Gonzalez e-mail newsletter:
There are two brand new, never before heard, songs by Jose's band,Maybe I'm retarded, but I only found one song to download. But whatevs. Check it out.
Junip, available free to download here. As some of you know, Junip is a project he's had for many years with Tonias Winterkorn (organ, moog) and Elias Araya (drums).
Videos I Love: Soulsavers "Revival"
This video was posted on Stereogum several months ago and I was sure that I had reposted it on my own site, but alas, I couldn't find it in my archives. Anyway, the song is getting heavy spins on FM 94/9 since it's one of their recommended for the month (alongside my favorite, Band of Horses) and every time I hear it, it makes my heart soar a little...it kinda gives me a little peep into that thing that religion does for other people that it never really did for me. Like if you've ever seen the movie The Apostle, you know what I'm talking about. Like that same feeling that I had at Arcade Fire last April at Spreckels. Plus, who doesn't always love Mark Lanegan? He's one of the most distinguishable voices in rock and has been for the last 15+ years. Anyway, a little religious experience for you all. (If you really like it, Chickrawker posted the MP3 today in her Music Monday post)

The Killers, The Vines, Louis XIV, The Belles Perform Helter Skelter In Sydney
Looks like local boys Louis XIV had quite the time on tour with The Killers. This was filmed at the end of the tour in Sydney on November 11th with The Killers, The Vines, The Belles, and Louis all taking the stage for Helter Skelter.
Sat Recap: Spell Toronto, Crash Encore, The Silent Comedy, Calico Horse at Casbah
Saturday was a pretty busy day for me so when it was finally time to go out, I was ready to let go. The show at the Casbah was the perfect place to do just that.
I arrived while Calico Horse was already playing, but caught most of their set. They sounded great with Emily behind the keys at times and at other times playing guitar. A couple months ago I got an email from someone in New York who is a publicist and she asked if I'd heard of Calico Horse and said of them "next big thing out of San Diego in my opinion." While I know San Diego is teeming with talent, it's cool that someone across the country is taking note of our music scene and Calico Horse definitely deserves to be noticed.

I was excited to see Crash Encore for the first time as well as Spell Toronto because I love the new album, but the greatest draw for me was seeing The Silent Comedy again. Their apparel makes them look like they should be on HBO's Deadwood while their sound goes perfect with Carnivale, the show that was cancelled a couple seasons back. From the second the band is onstage to the moment they walk off, they are high energy, foot stompin, and crowd pleasing. They switch up instruments frequently, adding keys, mandolin, banjo, trombones, and more.

I had to capture the band live because pics just don't capture enough.
The Silent Comedy "Moonshine"
This song will appear on the band's next EP that they started recording today.
The Silent Comedy "Gasoline"
After their madness, I was there to just hang out. I watched Crash Encore and Spell Toronto for a bit but also spent plenty of time on the patio hanging out with friends. After all, it was a Saturday night and the venue was packed with people.

Spell Toronto sounded great, too. It is definitely noticeable when Jake is doing sound. I only stayed for about half the set as it was getting late.

I decided to head back to Kensington, where I hung out long enough for a couple drinks and a red headed slut, then walked home with Kittyhead, the neigborhood cat following close behind.

Friday Recap: Pt 2 Predicates CD Release @ Scolari's
After the Epicentre and after grabbing some dinner, I headed to Scolari's. The first band, Beatmo, was still playing, and when their crowd demanded "one more song" they gave it to them, which was fine and dandy for their fans but was pretty rude to the other bands as it put the whole evening behind...the Drowning Men didn't start until 1. I didn't really watch them at all because I was outside, but they definitely had their own crowd dancing their asses off.
I was there for The Predicates. I've been really enjoying their CD since they gave it to me a couple weeks back, but even more than that, they're really nice people so I wanted to show support.
I don't know if anyone remembers the local band The MacAnanys, but Greg's voice is a lot like Ryan's ... I guess it also reminds me a little of Craig from Hold Steady though the style is really different. Erika assists with backup vocals. Greg kept commenting how sloppy they were, but we had fun watching them, especially with his witty banter between songs.

After they finished, The Drowning Men set up, but like I said, they got started really late, and I had intended to get back to the Ken Club, so I didn't stick around even though I really like the band a lot. I headed home and went to the Ken Club with barely enough time to order a Heineken. I chatted with Matt from Transfer until the lights came up and they scooted everyone out of the bar. It was a nice ending to what was a great evening. I only wish I could've done more. I would've liked to have been at the Beauty Bar for Republic of Letters and to wish Nick a happy birthday in person and I heard the show at the Whistle Stop was great, too. Yeah, tell me again there's no local scene.

Friday Recap, Pt 1: Manchester Orchestra @ Epicentre
I hadn't been to the Epicentre in quite sometime. People complain about it all the time, but I don't really get why. If I was 16 and wanted to go to a show, I'd probably be at the Epicentre every weekend, no matter who was playing. And, when I was that age, if my ears weren't ringing for the next two days after a show, well, it must not have been that good. At 31 and with the help of my little $10 earlove earplugs, I was just fine with the show. I didn't quite take into consideration that the show would start quite so early, however, so when I got there a little after 9, I only caught one song by The Annuals. I got the setlist, but Lyn posted it, so go check it out there, along with her photos.
I was lucky that Manchester Orchestra and The Annuals are coheadlining, because they alternate who closes the show, and since I was there to see Manchester Orchestra, I was lucky they were last. While there weren't a ton of people at the show, the young crowd was concentrated up front, so I didn't take any photos of the show. However, I noticed a girl taking pics and video, so after the show I introduced myself and asked if she'd be willing to share her pics. She kindly agreed.
Here are some of Jessica's photos. You can see more in the photo album section of her MySpace page.

The band sounded great live. We were in the back and Pyles compared the singer to Jim James, for me there was a little Chris Corraba and they kinda reminded me of this SD band called Waiting for Autumn that I saw once a few years back. The music was quiet and haunting and then would build to these all out screamers with the whole band banging and clanging their instruments. The band played for over an hour, playing most of the tracks from their album I'm like a Virgin Losing a Child. Or maybe every single one? I'm not really sure.
What was funny though was what happened to me the next day. I was driving and going through my iPod and settled on Neutral Milk Hotel. I have never listened to the band but have them on my iPod. Yeah, figure that one out on your own. Anyway, a song comes on, and it occurs to me that this song was the song The Manchester Orchestra opened their show with..."Oh Comely". There were several times in the night when every instrument was silent, save for Andy's voice, and at times he even pulled away from the mic and just sang. He closed the show with a song incorporating "turn out the lights, the party's over" that sounded really cool.
The show was over by 10:30 so I headed off to destination two for the night.

More Pics: Steve Poltz & Dennis Borlek, Joanie & Ray
I forgot to add these pics to the last post and decided to make it a new one:

First, here's Steve Poltz and Dennis Borlek. There's an interview with Steve in the Nov/Dec issue of Music Matters. Pick up a copy at the Casbah.

Here's Ray Suen and Joanie Mendenhall. Ray just got back from Australia after a tour with Louis XIV. Joanie's band Joanie + Secretaries is playing on Friday night at the Tower Bar with The Roman Spring and Emery Byrd. In that same Music Matters mentioned above, there's a great pic of Matt, the singer of Emery Byrd. Someday that mag will come online, but till then, check out the glossy.

Thursday Recap: Bartender's Bible, Mr Tube, MEX
My plan was to see Silverbird at the Beauty Bar on Thursday night, but I got a late start and decided to just head to the Casbah instead. Later I heard that Silverbird didn't play until almost 11, so I could've caught them, but I was glad to be at the Casbah. T-Bone has been drumming for Silverbird, but on this night they apparently went drummerless because T-Bone was at the Casbah playing in Mr Tube and Bartender's Bible.
Anyway, it was my first time ever seeing Bartender's Bible and I really have no excuse or reason why, but they sounded amazing. Good time country music, with full stand up bass, a couple guitars, banjo, keys, and Pall Jenkins was even onstage playing a saw, which I haven't seen anybody do since last year's Adams Avenue Roots Fest.

I don't really need to get into too much detail about the night- it was a full on party. It was a celebration of the birthdays of Tim Mays, Mario Escovedo, Dennis Borlek, and I think like 5 other people. I just know that when I got there and saw Dave Jass and Andrew McKreg, I got excited that there might be some Uncle Joe's Big Ol Driver action on stage. Dave said no, but that Andrew would be playing a song or two with MEX.
Mr Tube and the Flying Objects played a great energetic set per usual and it's cool that the band shares members of Bartender's Bible even though the music is very dissimilar, with more of a Chicano/Santana vibe to it.

Last up was MEX, whose set didn't even start until almost 1 am. I love seeing them because the covers they do are stuff my parents played when I was growing up...Texas Tornados and stuff. And I know they're not gonna disappoint ever as long as they have Whiskeytown's "Excuse Me If I Break My Own Heart" in their set. On this night, they had up to 5 guitars onstage at any given moment, and Andrew not only played with them, but did his own mini set of rock n roll classics. I had such a crush on that guy when I was in high school and seeing him now so many years later was definitely a highlight. Then Mario took over the mic again and finished out their set with the house lights already on, well beyond last call.

This was the setlist for the portion of the night when Andrew took over the band

This was the regular MEX setlist
It was a particularly fun night at the Casbah because so many people were there who have in some way been a part of San Diego's music scene. I mean, how rare is it to catch Steve Poltz out on the town these days? It just doesn't happen often is all I'm saying. And it was particularly funny to me that after that whole Voice of San Diego thing, that all those idiots talking about the glory days of '93 weren't there to see the guys they go on about all the time. So I'm done defending the local scene. The people who claim their isn't good San Diego music anymore- the ones holding on to 93- are only making excuses. They got older, they got tired, and going to shows has been replaced by sitting at home and watching CSI. It's ok if people got married and had kids and can't make it out to shows, or even if they don't want to, but they need to shut up about local music today because they don't know what they are talking about if they aren't out experiencing it.
They quit music; the music didn't quit them. And the great part is that music is forgiving and will take them back should they ever venture out of their suburbs to check it all out.
