Tonight: d/wolves & Brothers Young @ Bar Pink

A while back, I got an e-mail from a publicist from Portland whom I've befriended telling me about his friends' band that was going to tour. He was quick to point out he was not their publicist but was trying to help them out as a friend, but they hadn't been able to secure a date in San Diego. I listened to the band and after instantly digging their sound, I reached out to Dang at Bar Pink and even though it's normally Tiki Tuesday, he agreed to have the show. I enlisted my boys in d/wolves to jump on the bill and we were set. Check out the feature on the band in this week's CityBeat.

Brothers Young are a six piece from Portland made up of three brothers and three of their closest friends. They're touring the west coast in support of their latest EP, Good People, which is officially released today. Check out a free download of "Good Deeds" (right-click/save-as) and see more about the band here.

The show is free and the bands will start at 10 pm.

New Brewery News: San Diego Beer Company

I didn't realize I slurred when I post. Sigh... can you even do that? There is now the mysterious brewery coming to light that has been downtown for a while but empty. They finally got thier ABC license in July and then started a facebook page last Friday. So who are these masked men you might ask? Beats me, so I investigated more. Rumor has it that they are some how linked to the Huntington Beach Beer Company. I love the query system on the ABC website. Guess what, they have the same owners. I guess that rumor is true. I haven't met any of the brewers or tasted any of their beer. Hopefully they can establish themselves downtown San Diego in an economy that has opened about 3 breweries in the last 3 months. Good Luck! (photo from Facebook.com)

YouTube: FM 94/9 Independence Jam 2010

I'm still sorting through the 600+ photos I took yesterday at the FM 94/9 Independence Jam, but while I'm doing that, I thought I'd share some video. First, Mr. Brian Karscig was telling me that he actually calls FM 94/9 to request a specific beer commercial. I had no idea what he was talking about, so he played me this snippet. Appropriate because MGD was the beer sponsor of the event (though the bands/friends/crew could've used about 4 more cases in the backstage area).

I didn't really plan on recording any video at the Indie Jam, but since it was Ian's last show and I found myself a spot on the wing of the stage, I couldn't resist. Sorry for the funny color, apparently my digital camera can't read LED lighting. On the other hand, considering I had my camera on a speaker cabinet and I was wearing earplugs, I am always amazed by the sound compression in my Sony cameras. Amazing if you know how loud this shit was from where I was standing. Hopefully I'll have some photos up before the next decade.

Anyway, here's The Silent Comedy performing "Victory", "Footnotes", and "Gasoline".

Jeff's Weekly Pick: AA Bondy @ The Casbah Wednesday September 1, 2010

What does a musician do after being involved in a motorcycle accident which requires recuperation time? Announce an upcoming tour, of course. That is exactly what Scott (aka AA) Bondy did after his Memorial Day mishap. The next leg of the tour brings the talented troubadour to The Casbah this Wednesday. Having seen Mr. Bondy perform alone and with a backing band, the show is worth seeing either way. This is because of his ability to deliver his beer soaked ramblings in a truly effective manner. Leaving his former grunge musical background in the dust, Scott released American Hearts, a folk album which he wrote in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York. A rigorous touring schedule was well received and led to his sophomore effort, When The Devil's Loose. This album is really more of the same folk ballads which have become his trademark. It will be a pleasure to see the recovered AA Bondy playing his guitar and harmonica at the Middletown mainstay. A great way to start the month for sure.

JBM and Aaron Swanton set the stage.

Beer News: Life of a Drinker/Alpine Brewery

(note: occasional SD:Dialed In contributor Jonathan started this blog post on August 11. He finished it today. With that pace, we should hear about GABF by Christmas. And no, he never posted about World Beer Cup. He's lucky I checked his typos. I didn't realize that people could actually slur in print.)

As always, I find myself on the hunt for the next great beer or the next nibble of food that makes my eyes roll back and add that extra inch to my beer gut. I guess it has been a while since I have last spoken. I have been busy brewing, travelling and of course eating. My schedule is packed, (my brew schedule that is). I have been working on my new beer fridge, feeding hops to my beers and visiting every beer festival all in one long hot summer. The Great American Beer Fest is coming up. And as always I will bring you a close up and personal perspective of what GABF is all about from a perspective of a brewer and a drinker. I will talk more about it but you can read about it here in September. Did I write about my time at World Beer Cup in Chicago? I don't remember. Honestly, we are in the most beer blessed city in the world. I am working with the planning committee for the National Home Brew Conference that will be here in fall of next year. Please, please buy tickets for the pro-brewers night when it gets announced. Follow @nhc2011sandiego for details on twitter. On to the reason for this post.

Anybody been up to Alpine lately? With the release of Exponential Hoppiness on Friday the 13th and Pure Hoppiness the weekend before who hasn't? The Alpine Brewery opened its long awaited Pub as well as finally making available some long awaited releases. I sent a few growlers to friends as pre-xmas presents. With all the wait, I went up to check out the cuisine and sample some of the in-house beers that would be served up for this special occasion. The beers released with the opening included Great 2005, 2008 and 2009. Great is the barrel aged barley wine that was last seen during a bottle release earlier this year and served at last years VIP session during the SDBW Brewers Guild Festival. All the food was ridiculous. The proteins are smoked (rumor says they use a blend of hickory). The beans were the highlight; I swear I tasted molasses but was told there weren't any mixed in. The potato salad reminded me of what my grandma used to make. The meat is smoked continuously during the day to keep up with demand. I suggest a lazy Sunday to get up there before it gets crowded. The prices are cheap for what you get. Make sure to order the large sizes and ask for lids cause it always tastes better as leftovers!

NPMT, Day 2, 8/14/10

I seem to have accidentally deleted my blog post for Day 1, if anyone knows how I can find a cached copy of it, I'd be eternally grateful. the URL is:

Anyway, here's a few photos from Day 2 at North Park Music Thing. You can find more on my blog at www.seemichaelsphotos.com. This evening, I made it a point to check out some bands I wasn't very familiar with. But first, a meeting of the best songwriters in San Diego:

New Bar News: Eleven, The Shakedown, Til Two

Ownership changes in the bar industy are nothing new, but they seem to come in waves. It feels like it wasn't long ago that I was writing about Scolari's changing to The Office, or the Zombie Lounge becoming the Radio Room or Soda Bar taking over Chaser's. It seems that this will be a constant...some bars find a formula for success and endure tough economic times, other brave entrepreneurs have to get out while they still can recover their investments, and still other owners just decide their bar owning days are behind them and retire out of the biz.

This summer, there are three bars that are finding new life. I've already talked about Eleven, the bar that was formerly the Radio Room (and The Zombie Lounge not long before that). Scott Blair, the owner of Hamilton's and Small Bar has taken over the spot with partner Dennis Borlek to turn the spot into another great beer destination for San Diego. Louis Mello, former Liar's Club owner, is manning the ship and has already proven that the spot will be a destination. We had a very successful showcase there during the North Park Music Thing, and on Thursday night, the bar was at capacity for their "official" opening party with The Donkeys and The Silent Comedy. The bar will generally host music on Fridays and Saturdays, limiting their lineups to two bands a night. With these guys, the focus is on good beer and a kick ass jukebox. Nothing more. Nothing less. (oh, and peanuts, though I'll never feel right throwing shit on the ground). Visit Eleven at 3519 El Cajon Blvd.

Another bar will be finding new life as The Shakedown(With a great SD logo to match). What was once known as The Rhythm Lounge, the bar located in the Midway district near the Sports Arena has long struggled with being lost among titty bars and XXX superstores. (Remnant signs still inside the bar warn about people who bring in their own booze or have sex in the bathroom). The bar is currently being remodeled and renovated. Ted, the new owner, has been living in LA for the past 7 years learning the ins and outs of bars, entertainment, and marketing and thinks that with his partners, he can offer a spot for true rock n roll and punk rock in San Diego. Think old cars, choppers, punk rock and tattoos and you have some idea what they're shooting for. Dave from The Queers is one of those partners and on a recent afternoon, all hands were on deck painting and starting the process of renovating the stage for better live performances. I can't say I ever went to The Rhythm Lounge, but after talking with the guys and realizing that I knew Ted before he moved, when we both frequented places like the Ken Club, The Tower Bar, Scolari's, etc., I'm sure that The Shake Down will have no problem finding their niche crowd, with rock n roll DJs most nights and shows only when there's a bill worthy of hosting. Find the bar at 3048 Midway Drive. They expect to be open on September 1st, with at least one show already scheduled for September 10 with Social Spit, Neverland Ranch Hands, The Last Years and more. (The bar wasn't quite photo ready, but I expect to be back before the opening) (Update: there is also a show on 9/4, the opening weekend, feat. The Experiments, Strangely Strange and Punk Rock DJs)

And finally, what started as a not-for-blogging scoop earlier this week was confirmed last night while I was at the Beauty Bar. The bar has been sold to "Ron Ro Enterprises", which is a partnership with Mick (Tower Bar) and Thaddeus Robles (bartender extraordinaire at Livewire, Casbah, etc.).

Mick confirmed that the bar will take the name of the bar that once stood in the same location, Til Two. "We made a Facebook page today, so I guess it's public knowledge now!," Mick said in his mischievous accent. "Ron Ro" will take over the bar officially on October 1st. I asked if the bar will have a new look, and Mick was a bit coy. He likes it as it is, he says, but he'll probably add some booths in the front bar area, and of course change some of the Beauty Bar signature silhouette signage. He likes the outdoor stage and thinks that changes will be gradual instead of a shut-down/full bar makeover. Judging by classic photos of Til Two, it appears that the aesthetic will feel old school and laid back, and knowing Mick for a few years now, I know that the bar is in good hands. He's never had a shortage of bands that want to play at the Tower Bar (even when an entertainment license was in question) and his kind demeanor has always been appreciated. He makes you feel like you're a prized customer whether you see him daily or just twice a year. It will be sad to say goodbye to the Beauty Bar in San Diego, but I look forward to the next chapter forward, which appears to be a nod to the bar's past. Check out Til Two when it opens on or around October 1 at 4746 El Cajon Blvd.

Old Photographs: Greg Laswell @ Anthology, 6/11/2010

Some more old photos...Greg Laswell performed at Anthology (June 11, 2010) and it was a bit of a homecoming as well as a CD release show. I started my night at the Casbah, catching Old Tiger's debut there, then hurried to Anthology to catch the end of Brian Knight and all of Greg's set. This was a rare show at Anthology, where the tables had been moved and the crowd was standing in around the stage. Some yuppie chick with a giant purse kept pushing me with it, letting me know that she was saving her friend's spot with the luggage on her shoulder. Greg, I love you, but the more your music spreads, the more I hate your bitchy stalker fans.

Another thing of note was the ring on Greg's finger. My friend later told me that Greg and Ingrid Michaelson were wed, however this week I talked to Cary Brothers about it and he said they're engaged, but not yet married. Either way, I'm happy for the talented couple. More pictures if you click 'keep on reading' below.

Old Photographs: Good Old War, Yukon Blonde, Audra Mae @ Soma, 6/10/2010

Here are some more old photographs (from June 10, 2010). I made a last minute decision to check out Good Old War, Yukon Blonde, Audra Mae, and locals Meseta, who were playing on the sidestage at Soma. It was a fantastic show and though I was only familiar with Audra, the crowd new every word to every Good Old War song and the kids were nice enough to let me take some photos. I didn't mean to upload these so large, but the rest of the photos are after the jump. Unfortunately I got there too late to get any decent shots of Meseta, but check those kids out. This show was a perfect example of a good lineup with bands that weren't necessarily on my radar but that I thoroughly enjoyed. Sometimes you have to take a chance on a show because you might just be surprised with a killer show.

Old Photographs: The XX & Phantogram @ HoB, 6/8/2010

I have these folders of photos that I've never uploaded glaring at me and it's time for me to file them on to the external harddrive. Sarah & Josh from Phantogram were nice enough to get me a photopass, and while it's fun trying to get photos with such gnarly lighting, the result was very limited success. That's probably the reason why I was mentally roadblocked on this particular show and just never really even looked at my photos. That said, here's what I've got. The rest are after the jump.

Oh, and obviously I'm not going to attempt to review the show 3 months later, but it was the kind of show that casual fans probably hated but uber fans (like me) loved. It was sold out and crowded. It was pretty hilarious that between Phantogram and The XX, they attempted to flood the stage with fog which ended up so thick I couldn't see my hand 2 inches from my own face. This triggered the fire alarms and a recording (which nobody could really hear) urged everyone to evacuate. Not a single person budged, but the alarm triggered at least 3 times before the band was able to come out, sans fog machine. So I should at least be grateful that I got the photos I got because the stage-shy members of The XX probably would've preferred not to be seen at all.

Free Music Round-Up

I haven't had the chance to post a free music roundup in a couple of weeks, so here's a late one that has stuff I've collected these past few weeks. Any bands who have shows coming to San Diego are below. There are more random downloads of new music after the jump (click 'keep on reading'). To download, right-click & "save as" or click and "save target as", depending on your browser.

Wednesday: Surfers For GOOD @ Analog Bar

My friend, Greg Gibson, sent me the following event and I wanted to share it with my lovely readers who might be interested in partying for a purpose. (photo courtesy Sean Brody)

On Wednesday, August 25, Safari Surf School and Surf Resource Network present the inaugural Surfers For GOOD Charity Shindig at Analog Bar downtown, featuring live performances by Jamuel Saxon and Bedford Grove, along with a screening of Fuel TV’s On Surfari: Liberia. Funds raised will benefit Surfing Nosara Foundation, to help complete construction of a much-needed school lunchroom, and Trinity Dental Clinic, to purchase a vital signs monitor to make life-saving surgeries safer.

The event kicks off at 7pm. If you've been reading my blog, you know that I spent a lot of time at Analog during Comic-con and it's my go-to spot when I'm downtown. The food is killer and this event should prove to just add to the awesome. While there, make sure you get the spiral potato and some sliders. You won't be sorry.
