Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 29- Monday, September 5, 2016

I can't even begin to talk about my life right now. Work is a bit out of control, and I'm still just trying to find some balance with the demands on my time and the stuff I love doing, like going to shows and events and basically I never feel caught up. Last week I did get to shoot Culture Club, however, which was AMAZING, being that they were the first record I ever purchased on my own. I also went to The Black Heart Procession, Darren and I also enjoyed the Best of San Diego Party at Liberty Station, Nova had her first soccer scrimmage, I worked at Face to Face, went to the Blackout Party record release party, went to the DoSD Bay Sessions at Loews with Creepxotica, and caught Black Joe Lewis at the Casbah. So how have your last 6 days been? It's the end of the month so I'm missing listings for Black Cat Bar, Sycamore Den, Whistle Stop. Full archives through Labor Day are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 22-Sunday, August 28, 2016

Last week was pretty great, though I skipped out on David Bazan to be with my family, knowing I would also be out Sunday night for the Redwoods Revue at Loews Coronado Resort. I definitely enjoyed the weekend, and Gregory Alan Isakov was pretty amazing at the Belly Up on Friday, we did some shopping on Saturday, and then the Bay Sessions was pretty incredible, with gorgeous views of the bay and sunset, and lots of good friends and warm vibes. This week is going to be a bit nuts but I'm kinda counting down to a trip we're taking in a few weeks. I hate starting the week with lots of catching up to do, but it appears that's the way it's gonna go. Monday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, August 19-Sunday, August 21, 2016

This weekend has been so dreamy for me when it comes to music. I got to see Rhett Miller on Sunday, one of my most favorites Joshua James on Wednesday, tonight I get to see Gregory Alan Isakov, and David Bazan tomorrow. I can't say it's been all good however, as Nova was kinda sick for her first week of school and work was exhausting. If there's anyone in the world who uses Trello or Asana or any other project management software and finds it actually cuts your work, please let me know how because both are a total pain in my ass. I'm hoping things slow down this weekend, and am looking forward to some good shows, some beach time, some family time, and hopefully catching up on sleep. Don't forget that on Sunday DoSD and Casbah present the first Bayside Session of the year at Loews Coronado Resort for The Redwoods Revue. It's free with RSVP (21+). Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 15-Thursday, August 18, 2016

Another weekend behind us and a busy week ahead. After a nighttime swim with Nova's friends on Friday evening, I went to see Lucy Dacus at the Casbah and she definitely exceeded expectation and is someone you should look out for, especially when Matador re-releases her record on September 9. From there, I went to Bar Pink, then the Ken Club. It was a good night. The kiddo was a little sick on Saturday so we all laid low and hung around the abode. On Sunday, Nova and Darren spent the day volunteering at the Dollhouse with paint and construction jobs while I worked at home (to make sure you have these listings and stuff) and by the time they came home, I was pretty much out the door to catch Rhett Miller at Soda Bar. It was an awesome show, and the first time in ages that I posted up front and center stage for an entire show. When it was all done, I went to Casbah for Dillinger Escape Plan, then closed the night at Scotty Pants' Karaoke at the Hideout. This week has so many amazing shows and Nova goes back to school, so I will be trying again to reestablish the work/life balance. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Upcoming Observatory Shows (Updated 8.12.2016)

The Observatory had some big changes this week. Friday's Jeremih show has been postponed but no new date announced. Same with Cold War Kids. Additionally, three shows-- Young Dolph, Rich The Kid, and RiFF RAFF-- have all been moved to Music Box. The good news is that several new shows were announced and go on sale today: Warpaint, Jai Wolf, Rae Sremmurd, Post Malone, Clams Casino and more. I'm not sure I'm going to keep posting these shows here because they're no longer providing me art, but we'll see what happens. All shows on the books are after the jump.

91X Announces BeerX San Diego 8.27.16

This came through the inbox yesterday and I thought I'd share in case you hadn't heard:

91X and Rockstar Beer Present "BeerX San Diego," happening Saturday, August 27 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Liberty Station in Point Loma, 2640 Historic Decatur Road.

Over 100 craft beers have been curated by organizers, and will be offered in unlimited samples to beer fans during the event.

A main stage will feature live music by bands with members who are also notable in the craft beer community, including Paul Segura, Brewmaster of R&D at Karl Strauss Brewing Company, and his band Rifftide. Additional performing bands include local favorites Zebrahead, and tribute bands Blink 180 True and Green Today.

“Beer and rock and roll have always been synonymous, and a lot of local musicians are also really skilled brewers,” 91X Program Director Halloran. “Brewing is a task done almost completely behind the scenes, so I think it’s pretty cool to bring guys like Paul Segura on stage and give them the spotlight they deserve, plus I would like to see these guys all coiffed-up onstage while we all quaff down the brews they have proffered.”

VIP tickets are available for early entry at 6:00 PM. All attendees must be 21+ years of age.

Photos: The Last Shadow Puppets @ Observatory North Park, 8.5.2016

I haven't posted any photo sets in awhile, so I don't know why now, but although these aren'tmy greatest photos ever, I had so much fun having my camera in hand again. It was also super challenging. The pit was full of photogs, the lighting was mostly red and saturated from behind, and then there were bursts of white light from the front. Still, it was an amazing show and I'm not one to refer to musicians as sexy, but the whole performance, from having a full string section to the interplay between Alex and the crowd and between all of the musicians on stage was pretty damn sexy. I do my best with the gear I've got, but my objective is a few nice photos for Instagram for my various account responsibilities, so if you want a photo set of the whole band, you'll have to look up someone else's pics. Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, August 12-Sunday, August 14, 2016

In San Diego, where summer lasts through October, it's hard to believe our summer is already coming to an end. Nova starts 4th grade on Tuesday so it's our de facto "last weekend of summer". Of course, school doesn't necessarily limit our adventures, but it certainly changes our sleep schedules and work schedules. This week Nova started a new soccer league, we visited the Cove and the little secret tree swing, Darren and I went to see Kurt Vile, we played table tennis at Park & Rec, we took the dog to OB for an afternoon, and spent a couple evening in Balboa Park at the dog park and kicking around the soccer ball. It was a pretty good week, indeed. This weekend has a lot going on and mostly I'm looking forward to a break in email. Friday through Sunday listings are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 8-Thursday, August 11, 2016

Weekdays and weekends never made much of a difference to me, as I pretty much work several hours every day, even when I'm technically on "vacation", but lately I've come to appreciate weekends just for the fact that most people stop emailing me come 5pm on Friday before it kicks in again at 4am Monday. All that to say, weekends just aren't long enough. I had a pretty fun night Friday shooting The Last Shadow Puppets and then hanging out at Bar Pink and Ken Club. Nova did Roller Derby Camp on Saturday and Sunday, so Darren and I got to enjoy some Anniversary time and e all went out to dinner at Volare once her camp was finished. On Sunday I mostly worked, but we met up with my family in Shelter Island and it's always beautiful there. I'm definitely looking forward to this week of music with Kurt Vile, Monsieur Perine, and more, and it's also a little bittersweet since Nova starts school next week, so hopefully we can get some final fun in this week before it's back to the grind. Just wanted to do a quick update on listings before you head into the weekend. Things around here are crazy as ever, work is non-stop and keeping an only child busy for the summer is challenging, though we've definitely been enjoying things like night time zoo (Open till 9pm!!), swimming, and slumber parties with my nieces. We're off to Skate World, so I just wanted to share the listings before I bounce. If you're going to The Last Shadow Puppets tonight, remember it's an all ages show so expect the headliner on about 9. Many stated that the Savages show at the Casbah in 2015 was the best show of the year, and knowing how history tends to repeat itself, I'd say their set at the Observatory in North Park lived up to the expectation for the show to beat for 2016.

Super group Headwound City consisting of two seminal local lads Justin Pearson & Gabe Serbian set the stage. Savages mowed us all over with just the right amount of intensity, tight sound, searing looks, minimalist lighting, and crowd interaction. I felt like Goldilocks while Savages tucked me into the perfect musical set... sweet dreams, ladies!

Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, August 1-Thursday, August 4, 2016

It was an eventful weekend, though I've been on a bit of a music hiatus lately. I was really fired up for trying to hit Zella Day and Savages in the same night, and then when it came to it, I was so wiped out from like 16 straight hours of work that I just slept. I guess around here we're alljust readjusting to Nova being back and all. We did have an amazing Saturday as we celebrated my niece's 9th birthday at Fanuel Street. The kids paddleboarded and kayaked all day and we were all pretty wiped after. Sunday was a work day for me, but after doing online research on whether or not it was appropriate, we all binge-watched Stranger Things together. I'm looking forward to this mellow week, and celebrating 4 years with Darren. It's the beginning of the month, so some of the listings are missing from Black Cat Bar, El Dorado, and Whistle Stop. It's been a few weeks since I've been able to update much around here that didn't have to do with Pride or Con. In that time, a ton of new shows have been announced, but a couple of them are going on sale today: Cold War Kids and Balance & Composure, so don't wait to grab tickets. Meanwhile, tonight Savages play and there are still tickets for the taking at the box office. As I mentioned on SoundDiego, Tim Mays rarely chimes in about bands, but after they played Casbah last year he declared it one of the best shows at the Casbah in years, which is saying a lot if you think how many shows he sees and books every year. Things To Do In San Diego: Friday, July 29-Sunday, July 31, 2016

Deep breath. This was the last week that Nova was gone so Darren and I took advantage as much as we could around our work schedules. On Monday we spent the late afternoon at the Safari Park and our favorite cheetahs came out to play for a little bit. Afterward we went to the Office as kind of a last hurrah. On Tuesday I babysat for a friend while she went to Modest Mouse, but after D and I caught a late night Korean BBQ dinner. On Wednesday afternoon, we joined my family up at Harrah's Southern California Resort which was fun just hanging by the pool and catching up in the hotel room until they all left and Darren and I got dinner, gambled for a hot minute (came out exactly 50 cents ahead than what we started with), then took naps before returning home. Then Thursday was the big day. While I worked, Darren cleaned the house top to bottom before we picked up Nova at the airport then had dinner at Phil's. So life shall go back to somewhat normal...we'll enjoy what's left of summer break before it's back to school and soccer and piano and derby and figure skating and all the running around. Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, July 25-Thursday, July 28, 2016

Comic-Con 2016 has come and gone and I did as much as I could around all my worknights and the oppressive heat. Every year I guess I feel more and more out of the loop. I haven't watched a movie in a theater in maybe 2 years? More? and so there are tons of pop culture phenomena that are just over my head. I was stoked to get to see the Silicon Valley cast at the live taping of Conan on Wednesday, and it was a treat when Thomas Middleditch turned out to be a character in the Comedy Bang Bang performance on Friday, but outside of that, I can't say there's a TV show or film that gets me all giddy. It was fun hanging out with Pyles for three of the days, so I decided of all the things I saw and shot photos of, he's my favorite part and I'm lucky to have him as one of my besties. This week things definitely mellow out, Nova comes back from Missouri, and thus we go back into parental mode. Monday through Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego (Comic-Con Edition): Thursday, July 21-Sunday, July 24, 2016

It has been a really good week, even though it meant working my fingers off to get all of my ducks in a row so I can have a little freedom. Monday was quite an amazing experience as Darren and I went to Randall Christopher's zine release party at Verbatim Books, which unbeknownst to us, turned into a powerful performance of a film he's working on about the capture of Adolf Eichmann, including a talk by Auschwitz-Birkenau survivor Rose Schindler. Needless to say it was heavy, but amazing and inspiring, too. Someone asked, "how do you go on after such horrific atrocities?" and she responded, "You must live." So we had heavy hearts the rest of the night, but took advantage of a night in North Park, with drinks at Bar Pink, dinner at West Coast Tavern, then Madonna Undercover at The Office. Tuesday was a hellish workday trying to make sure the mass of work was somewhat tied together but I think I left off in a good spot. Then Wednesday, Pyles picked me up so we could pick up the Conan tickets he'd won, then found some no limit street parking in the vicinity of Monkey Paw. They're giving 20% off to Con customers, so we took advantage with some beer and food before catching an Uber to the Conan taping. It was really fun, but it was hot as hell in our balcony seats, so I can't say I was sad when it ended. Darren picked me up, we grabbed $5 happy hour burgers at The Balboa and then I worked at The Joy Formidable. And then I worked all night. So here we are, Thursday is gonna be crazy, and I'm gonna try to squeeze as much in as I can before leaving downtown again to get to work at The Irenic. Surviving Comic-Con 2016

Whenever there's a big event, I usually weigh in on my dos and don'ts, what to bring etc., so I'm gonna modify my festival survival with some extra stuff for Comic-con.


Here's my usual street festival list, modified for Con:

• A refillable water bottle
• NO FLIP FLOPS (ok, that's a personal peeve, but they're not very comfortable for 4 days)
• Extra clothes: t-shirt & socks. It's gonna be hot and muggy this weekend.
• Sunscreen, napkins/kleenex/baby wipes, hand sanitizer, lotion, deodorant, toothbrush- You never know where you might end up...you just might get lucky...if not, you still get stinky and sticky. To me, these are pretty much essential if I'm going to be away from home for anything more than 5 hours.
• Camera (and backup batteries) Duh.
• Phone (and charger). Double duh.
• Laptop-Not for everyone, but there's a press room and free wi-fi throughout the convention center and downtown, so I expect to need mine often. I don't wanna hear shit about how I need an iPhone r iPad either, unless you're offering to buy me one.
• Power strip- Sometimes outlets are hard to find. A power strip will let you share with others.
• Snacks-Granola bars, jerky, string cheese, nuts...you never know how long you'll be waiting in lines. Small and compact and non-melty works best.
• Cash- you do not want to be stuck in ATM lines

This year Comic-con is offering expanded bag check, so you don't have to lug everything around all day. The Bag Check station is located near Hall A and underneath the escalator in the lobby of Hall E, on the ground floor level of the Convention Center. The charge is $2.00 per bag.

You need to return to the Bag Check before they close as items cannot be left overnight.

The Bag Check schedule for 2010 is:
Wednesday, July 21 2:00 pm-9:00 pm
Thursday, July 22-Saturday, July 24 7:00 am-2:00 am
Sunday, July 25 7:00 am-5:00 pm

Things To Do In San Diego Comic-Con Edition: Monday, July 18-Wednesday, July 20, 2016

I truly love Comic-Con Week in San Diego, but I have to tell you that it also makes my work crazy busy, so I'm exhausted before it has even begun. There's a lot to look forward to this week, however, so I'm posting this older photo (taken with my phone) because Monday night you should hit the one two punch--Randall Christopher's Zine Release at Verbatim, then Madonna Undercover at The Office to celebrate this beauty's birthday. I'll be working at the Irenic on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, which means I'll miss the Con action downtown at night, but am excited to see Conan on Wednesday, hopefully hit the Wired Party on Thursday, and enjoy some of the outside Con stuff like Adult Swim on The Green. I'll update when I can. Monday through Wednesday archives are after the jump.
