Saturday: The Heavy Guilt Record Release Party

The Heavy Guilt left a huge impression on me from the very first time I saw Erik and Al set up a PA outside the Soda Bar with all their gear to promote their show the next night.

Since that night, I've had the pleasure of seeing the band many times(and eventually booking them a few times, too)and I'm happy to gave gotten to know them all over the past several months. Their first record, Lift Us Up From This completely won me over. With their second album, In The Blood , the band cements themselves as one of the best in San Diego and I suspect they're destined for great things. The record has already been nominated for the San Diego Music Awards for Best Alternative Album (a category voted on by the academy).

Tonight The Heavy Guilt is officially releasing In The Blood on vinyl and CD, and the party is not to be missed. They have all kinds of great things lined up...from live artists to a vinyl swap meet to complement the lineup that includes Black Sands, Gun Runner, and Low Volts. Best of all, the show is all ages and is only $5.

Things To Do In San Diego: July 15, 2011

It has been a great week and with the flood of email I've been receiving this week, I'm gearing up for Comic-Con next week. I don't really know when I'll sleep, nor do I know how I'm gonna pay my bills, but I do know that I have a big weekend ahead with my Moonlight Safari on the Flightline at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly known as the Wild Animal Park) and my friend competing in the air guitar contest at the Casbah. Saturday is gonna kick ass with The Heavy Guilt's record release party and Sunday...well...hopefully there are some bacon filled bloody marys from West Coast Tavern in my future. Find your own fun, whether it's at X-Fest, Pride, the release party or any of the other great shows happening this weekend. Just be sure to enjoy the awesome of our music scene.

Things To Do In San Diego: July 14, 2011

I'm running late as usual...about to head out the door for the soft opening of The Griffin and then I'll be at West Coast Tavern for Jesse LaMonaca. He's been working out some new songs so I'm hoping he might play a few of them tonight. Did you catch the West Coast Tavern listing in Citybeat?
West Coast Tavern
2895 University Ave., North Park
westcoasttavern.com
Wednesday is “Bourbon Night,” when select bourbons and bourbon flights are half-price, and on Thursdays, sddialedin.com’s Rosey Bystrak curates free live music, bringing in folks like Jesse LaMonaca, Otro Mundo and Melly Frances.

As much as I love booking the spot, the bar is reconsidering their live music, so if people don't come, we might not be doing it for much longer. Don't let that happen. Come hang out with me, try some lamb sliders and a drink or two and let WCT know that having live music is what brought you in the first place.

The White Buffalo w/ Blackout Party & Ari Shine @ Casbah- 07.09.11

Last Saturday the Casbah hosted a trio of acts featuring some good ol' Americana. Ari Shine from LA opened up for local boys Blackout Party, who set the stage for Los Angeles' The White Buffalo. Late start and an even later finish to the night, but it was all well worth it.

Weekend shows at the Casbah are known to run later than the Sunday through Monday shows and Saturday was no exception. It all started when opener Ari Shine started playing just before 10, about an hour and a half after doors had opened. Its always good to give the crowd time to lube up before the music starts, but by around 9:45 quite a few people were starting to wonder if the opening act was happening or not. Apparently making up for lost time, Shine played what seemed to be a very long (hour+) set for an opener. Solid tunes, but the one man acoustic show started to drag a bit, especially considering most in attendance were itching for the two following acts to take the stage.

Ari Shine:

I had the opportunity to talk with Brian, Danny and Jesse during the long wait for the opening band which was great since I hadn't seen a Blackout Party show since they played Bar Pink last October. Solid group of guys right there. Apparently, apart from recording their debut album, they have been spending a lot of time practicing and playing live gigs because they seemed much more polished on stage than I remembered. Much more stage presence and crowd interaction, both of which fed into the crowd's rapidly escalating enthusiasm. Keep your eyes peeled for their impending album release show- it's going to be a helluva party.

Blackout Party:

The White Buffalo is one of those acts that, if you're relying solely on the limited tracks available on their website, you have no perspective on what they bring to the table at a live show. The studio recorded versions of their songs offer the same reflective lyricism and melodies as you would get on stage, but the live show takes it all to another level. I've been fortunate enough to see these guys a couple times in the past few months (most recently at The Loft on UCSD's campus) and they continue to amaze. Jake Smith is a flat out force of nature- apart from his intimidating size, his deep, rich vocals have the power to stop you in your tracks. Purely by function of the way he delivers his songs you can tell that his lyrics are not born of some naive impression of what Americana music should be about- he has definitely lived it and it comes through loud and clear in his voice. Those who know me know that I have and will not hesitate to hype this band up at every opportunity. From what I've seen everyone who attends a White Buffalo show, whether it's their first or tenth, walks away immensely satisfied and eager to find out when the next opportunity to see them will arrive.

So long, O'Connell's; Welcome The Griffin

Last year I wrote that O'Connell's was closing and supported the rumor that the bar was to become "Saints and Sinners". Apparently at the last minute, the buyers pulled out and the bar remained open as O'Connell's. Judging by their lack of updates on their site and fanfare-free booking, it would seem the owners couldn't wait to sell. I don't remember when they actually closed their doors, but I'm happy that the bar was finally purchased and has been transformed into The Griffin (no relation to the one in Vegas).

I started seeing Facebook posts a few weeks ago from an old high school friend and got curious. He's one of the partners with some buddies and they've been more or less gutting the place. Finally all their work is ready for the big reveal and tomorrow is the soft-opening. The bar has the same type of license (License 48) and will have live music, DJs, and a jukebox.

For the soft opening, they'll have hosted food and drinks from 6-9pm and live music by Matt Commerce and DJ W. Steele. You have to RSVP, so check out the Facebook Event listing. After the party's over (and when the booze stops being free), you can still hang out and see Wild Mountain Honey, a Steve Miller tribute band.

The Griffin is located at 1310 Morena Blvd. Their site has just a splash page for now, but you can check them out at Reverb Nation and Facebook.

Things To Do In San Diego: July 13, 2011

So I guess I am a little late to the party, but I am loving Turntable.fm. If you haven't tried it out, be warned because you will lose hours on end waiting to be a DJ in a popular room, or sitting around waiting for your next great pick to play once you get a DJ slot. We got in on the fun yesterday and created a room for The Casbah, so grab some friends and see who can play the most obscure band that's played San Diego's best indie music venue. The beta is now open to anyone with a Facebook account who has a friend already using the platform, so if you need someone, friend me on Facebook and you're in, just don't let it suck you in too much because nothing beats live music. Nothing.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Summer Camps In Full Swing

I am a 34 year old single girl whose largest responsibility involves feeding and cleaning up after a dog and two cats in my little one bedroom apartment in Kensington, and I would never presume to know what mommies experience on a daily basis. I see my sister with my two nieces and I think she's a miracle worker when just getting everyone fed and cleaned and dressed and into the car to go anywhere is a massive production, but last week I tried my hand at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's ABC Toddler Camp with my soon-to-be-4 year old niece, Johanna, so I could deliver all of you fine people of San Diego my version of a 'mommy blog'.

We had prepared Johanna for the camp and let her know that mommy and daddy were going to take Nadia (who was too young for camp) while she stayed with Tia Rosemary, but no amount of talking and preparation could prevent the ultimate meltdown when everyone actually walked away and she was left with me. I suppose growing up with an in-home daycare has made me a little bit tougher and I didn't break into that awful panicked sweat when she went hysterical. Even as the crying subsided and she warmed up to the kids and the counselors and the idea of camp, Johanna is fiercely independent and was not about to wear the camp required t-shirt or nametag.

The counselors Alene and Brittany were super cool and were probably instructed that since parents were present, discipline was not their responsibility...ultimately if kids didn't want to partake or they acted up, it was our responsibility to manage our kid so long as there was no danger to animals and such.

The toddler class had 6 kids and their adults and the two hour a day camp lasted for three days. Each day we went through a portion of the alphabet with "Animal Actions" and though some of the actions were a stretch ("z" is for zzzzz's because the desert tortoise sleeps through winter), for the most part the actions allowed the kids to interact, burn some energy, and have fun. To read all about it and see more photos, click 'keep on reading' below.

We started off with an animal interaction where a trainer brought out Peanut the Armadillo whose animal action was "Arching" because they can curl forward into a ball but also hyperextend their backs the opposite way. The kids emulated the action, we got to pet his hard exterior, we sang the alphabet song, and we proceeded on through the alphabet for the next two hours and subsequent two days.

I won't give the whole rundown of all of the activities but here are just a few of the pictures I took... this is Johanna and Amelia hanging out on the life-sized rhino (whose "C" action is to "charge").

I wasn't taking a whole lot of photos the first day because I was more concerned about Johanna suddenly realizing she was still stuck with her Tia. Luckily she only requested that I call her mom once. When we had our snack in a patio area, some geese walked by and as we waited to move on to the next activity, we noticed they left behind a trail of poop. The way to a kid's heart is apparently having an inside joke that they think they might get in trouble for saying to any other adult. Our secret word for each other for the remainder of camp was "goosepoop". Each day we covered a different section of the park and my only complaint for the day was that the final activity was to dress up in costumes for "Imagination". The costumes were adorable but it was nearly two in the afternoon and hovering somewhere around 90 degrees. This was the most I could get Johanna to wear and it lasted about 42 seconds. I can't say I blame her.

My parents got a room at Harrah's Rincon Casino for two nights, so after camp and exploring the park for a bit, we hung out at the hotel/casino for a few hours. While everyone played in the pool, I crashed out on a bed in the room. I realized that the 4 hours of sleep I had the night before camp was not adequate. When I finally got home, I went straight to bed to be better prepared for the next day of work in the morning and camp in the afternoon.

DAY 2:

When we drove up to camp on Day 2, my sister told me that while they were getting ready, Johanna said to her, "Mommy, today at camp you have to stay far, far away, okay?" Naturally this meant going into the day that I was feeling a lot better about her comfort level. The day involved reviewing the prior day's activities, singing the alphabet, and kicked off with a "Jungle Jam" where all of the kids danced in those furry costumes. Except Johanna. She sat on my lap quietly and tried to avoid eye contact so nobody would try to force her to dance. She's just like me in more ways than she'll ever know. The day's activities included seeing a leashed Prairie Dog (whose animal action is "kissing" though he just wanted to dig), checking out the area where the new cheetah run happens, checking out the lions chilling in their newly reopened enclosure, saw some birds, fed some ducks and catfish, and we got to pet a hedgehog.

Throughout the Safari Park, there are misting sprinklers to help fight the crazy heat of Valley Center. Johanna, for as much time as she spends at the beach and in swimming pools, hates the way the light drops feel on her skin and goes out of her way to avoid them at all costs. On day 2, our final activity was to run like cheetahs in an open shaded grass area, and after she and I chased each other and the other kids for a while, I went to a tree that had a mister spewing from it and she came and joined me as we stomped in the mud (much to the chagrin of the other parents). This was a milestone for us. We closed the day by seeing a trainer with this gorgeous owl and then went to the plaza area where the Summer Safari was in effect with music from Africa, dancers, acrobats, limbo, and other activities for everyone to let loose.

That night we all hung out at Harrah's Rincon by the pool, and my parents surrendered the room so we could stay. I ended up working until about 3:30 that morning but was still able to sleep in, get a great late breakfast, and get to the park with our final day of camp ahead.

DAY 3:
This photo is how we started our day of camp. Johanna still refused her camp shirt and nametag, but she was excited for her last day, though at some point that morning, Johanna had asked my sister if the other kids liked her and had a minor panic attack because she couldn't remember her teachers' names. And we still had the "goosepoop" thing making us giggle.

We did the ritual review of the animal action alphabet so far and all of the things we'd learned the past two days, and the final day was spent on the Safari Trail and Condor Ridge areas of the park. Johanna spent the day fighting with Amelia for Alene's hand.

The kids got to pet a kookaburra, did an activity to emulate an elephant's trunk, saw some bald eagles and prairie dogs and condors and bighorn sheep.

After a snack, we reviewed the day, the kids all ran around, and we got to see a desert tortoise close up before calling our camp to an end. Before meeting up with the rest of the family to take the tram, Johanna and I enjoyed a slow meandering walk to the elevator/treehouse.

This is what I would call a victory...Johanna playing under the misters.

On our way out, we stopped by the gorillas and were lucky to see momma holding her new baby.

If you're interested in any of the various camp programs for kids, either at the San Diego Zoo or the Safari Park, click here for more information. If camp isn't right for you or you just don't have the luxury of spending the middle of the day at the zoo, you can always just get a Zoological Society membership and build your own adventures. If you don't have children and are interested in adult adventures, there are plenty of those to go around, too, like the Room to Roam or Roar and Snore adventures. Check back here next week, too, because on Friday I'll be doing the 2/3 Mile Flightline Safari over the park. It's part of their special Moonlight Safari that only takes place during the full moon of July 15 & 16 and August 12 & 13. If you wanna join me, register now! If everything works out, I'm hoping to get there early enough to see the cheetah run, too.

Of course, I took a whole bunch more photos, so here's the full album.

THE RUMBLE SAN DIEGO JULY 9TH W/ MRS. MAGICIAN, LUKE RATHBORNE, COLONY AND DJs ROB DYLAN & PET ROCK

The Rumble San Diego returns tomorrow night to it's North park home Bar Pink. 2011 has been a doozy for the San Diego Rumbles, the bands just keep getting better and better and the line out front keeps getting longer and longer. Tomorrow night should be no exception, featuring performances from local surf/garage maestro's Mrs. Magician, New Yorker Luke Rathborne and SD shoegaze purveyors Colony. DJs Rob Dylan (a certain employee from M-Theory Records) & Pet Rock (....from Moviegoers) will be spinning before and in between sets.

Mrs. Magician first burst on the scene in 2010 and have made waves fast with their brand of doom and gloom surf/garage/post punk. Having opened for the likes of J. Mascis, Jeff The Brotherhood, Crocodiles, Paul Collins (The Nerves, Breakaways, The Beat) these guys have hit the ground running and aren't about to let up. You can purchase two 7"s tomorrow night The Spells (Loud & Clear Records) and There Is No God (Thrill Me Records) and if you're lucky you can probably buy them a beer! Watch the video for "Tabloids" here..http://vimeo.com/24577994

New York singer/songwriter Luke Rathborne may be only 23, but the man sings haunting dark and delicate pop that is beyond his years. Managed by The Strokes management and with his career just starting to bloom, Luke is going to have a great summer!

Super sludgey shoegaze ala Sonic Youth met with 80s influenced synths reminiscent of Joy Division and The Cure, this four piece, led by Danny Brown, are fresh off their mini West Coast tour with Primitive Noyes. Formed in 2010, Colony take thrashing garage rock and inject it with enough psych pop flourishes to create their answer to art rock. Think Explosions in the Sky, but bigger and louder.

DJs Rob Dylan & Pet Rock will be on the decks all night spinning ear candied treats for you to dance to. Remember The Rumble is free, so kindly tip the hard working folks behind the bar at Bar Pink and don't be a dick to the door guys. Thanks, we love you and as always The Rumble is brought to you by Future Sounds, Indigenous, Bar Pink, SDdialedin, Owl & Bear, Bedouin Vintage Collective, Friends With Both Arms, BMI, Veoba and Pabst Blue Ribbon. See you tomorrow night!

TRANSFER Tour Diary

After the Manchester show, we discovered a place to lay our heads called 'The Mill'.

We loved the setup and vibe of the place and were able to get some good rest before we split for the next stop. Random encounter at the end of a show night: we wound up enjoying some of the finer things with the band The Ting Tings. Friendly folks...

MANCHESTER was a good one. One great thing I've noticed about the EU fan contingent is the barrier work they put in. Doesn't matter how many people are in the room, be it ten thousand or twenty five...these devoted babies are right at the edge of the stage, rocking the barrier like they battled for it and normally that is the case. This was again proven at the Hop Farm Festival in Kent the following show. It was our first festival of the season and we had the privilege to open the show's main stage. Not expecting too huge of a showing being first on, we walked out to find our devoted Babies at the barrier (of course), eagerly awaiting the set to commence. Quite surprisingly, we saw that the festival scene had already begun and we noticed thousands had already arrived and had taken their positions while more were filing in. It's a fantastic realization to see the festival spirit so alive, and to have the reward of our first exposure to the curiosity of a completely new audience. The early birds. The seekers. You know who you are. Obviously we have a much greater appreciation for this perspective being new to this scene, but God love ya...

Our set flew by in a flash and before we could blink it was gone. A moment of sunshine came from behind a cloud and spread out on the stage as we played, and I found I was trying to burn the image in my mind as it happened for future reflection.

I discovered some new music that day and was pleased to walk away with having found City and Colour who performed directly after us. Good sound, great songs + harmonies...always goes down smooth. COORS, taste the rockies. The 70's ranch wear that the guitar player donned was also quite refreshing. I have to say that a handsome poly-western suit is an under-appreciated fashion play and coming from Corning, CA, I noticed. Well played, gents. A toast to Canada for these...well played, indeed and happy Canada Day!

The rest of this day was spent hanging out with some extended family and friends in The Brandon Flowers cast and crew. We hadn't seen some of them since our previous tour and it was nice to catch up in the festival setting. Our trailer was situated around the other band's that were up that day and everyone performing was friendly and had nice things to say which was a good feeling.

Here are some shots of the line-up and a few moments from the stage that etched this experience in our minds:

.

A BIG thanks to Miss Bev for all her hard work and for including us in such a cool eclectic event. Sent us away with our sails full and our hearts warm...

If you get the opportunity to experience The Hop Farm Festival, do yourself the favor. You won't forget it.

NEXT UP:

ABBEY ROAD...

Tonight: David Bazan + Band and Rocky Votolato

If you've read my site over the years, you already know Rocky Votolato is my favorite. The last few times in town, he's been on his own, but I imagine since it's a Friday night that things might be a bit more energized, perhaps with sharing David Bazan's band. Either way, you're in for an awesome Friday night at the Casbah.

Things To Do In San Diego: July 8-10, 2011

It's 3 am and I'm sitting at a desk in a hotel room at Harrah's Rincon Casino trying to be as quiet as possible save for the tapping of the keys. My dad got us a room so we could stay up here to hang out and get back to the Safari Park tomorrow for the last day of ABC Camp. Only problem was I didn't know if we were staying or going home until about 9pm...had the decision been made sooner, I probably would be sound asleep right now. Anyway, if you've ever thought of a "staycation", I have to say the pool, hot tub, the bars, and the spa are all really nice up here if you can get over the "casino people"...and you know exactly what I'm talking about so don't call me judgmental...I mean, I kinda come from a family of "casino people" so take it as you will. I might even come back next week to see Lionel Richie with my mom. This weekend is going to be a great one for music and it looks like the temperature might drop and be a bit more bearable in all of our non-air conditioned homes and bars, so get out and see some bands. Saturday and Sunday listings are after the jump.

The holiday obviously threw me off because I can't believe it's already Thursday. I kicked off summer camp at the Safari Park with my niece yesterday, and though it's only two hours, the drive up and the heat and then wandering the park and then going out to Harrah's really ate up the day so I'm behind on a million other things. Video: Other Lives at the Casbah 6/30/2011

Remember last week when I was so excited to see Other Lives at the Casbah? Well, it turns out the band was even better than I remembered. To make it even better, they're all so nice and gracious and, well, those Oklahoma accents can make this old gray heart flutter. I'm sure the Rosebuds were awesome, too, but my attention was elsewhere and I really look forward to seeing these guys back again in the fall with Bon Iver. I haven't had the chance to add titles to the videos; I'll try to get to it this weekend.

Things To Do In San Diego: July 5-6, 2011

What a weekend! I don't know about you, but sometimes holidays end up being more exhausting than the actual work week. Personally I saw some great live music, had fun listening to Tim Mays and DJ Claire spin vinyl at the Casbah for Jivewire, caught a punk show at the Tower Bar, and spent the 4th with my family. This week doesn't slow down at all with tonight's sold out show at the Casbah and my upcoming 3 day stint as a "mommy blogger" as I head to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to explore their Tiny Tots program, borrowing my niece for the adventure. Then this weekend my favorite musician, Rocky Votolato, returns to the Casbah with David Bazan, followed by a night with The White Buffalo, followed by a kick ass show with Generationals and Gardens and Villa. All of that is a few days off, in the meantime it looks like a Casbah heavy week leading into the weekend, too. Seriously, I should just take a sleeping bag. TRANSFER TOUR BLOG

WEEK ONE - Third time to the UK and running strong. The first day was a marathon as we had to hit the ground at Heathrow -

Off the plane to meet Platinum Tom, who was waiting with our rented splitter van, (RIP White Rider) and so it goes…

Picked up the gear we had waiting in storage and found our way to Stoke Newington to sort out a rehearsal space to try everything out. It took about 5 hrs from airport to practice space to navigate through London traffic so by the time we got there we were slightly cooked. All we had to do was get enough rest for the Hyde Park endeavor that awaited.

Our first festival in England and a fest it was. We showed up with time for a series of press obligations before hitting the stage at 5:30. As we walked on we realized there was a problem with the keyboard. One of the obstacles to overcome when touring outside of the US is the difference in power for electronics. The issue was that one of the stage hands, not realizing that we need to plug all of our pedals and keyboard into a power converter had fried our keyboard 5 minutes before we were to start. Festival changeovers happen at a very quick pace and I can see how it could happen easily if there is a lack of communication but nonetheless we were kinda fucked. Someone produced a replacement in the nick of time and we were allowed to play our whole set in front of the packed audience. Whew…stressful moment but was abated in time to let loose and move on to do what we came for.

Once the set was over we were escorted to do our final bits of press with Absolute Radio who set us up on a small stage inside of a swanky lounge to play and acoustic set for a table crowd. Quite the dichotomy of performances to walk from a giant feeling festival stage, straight to vegas lounge act…In the INTERVIEW that followed we were asked if we had ever done something like that before. Andy answered with an astute, "Any band that says they've never played in front of a crowd eating, is full of shit." (I'm paraphrasing, of course but you get the point), Well said.

I was amazed at the cast of characters that you see wandering around the dressing trailers set up at these events…I looked to my left at one moment and saw that I was standing about 5 feet from Prince Harry. He was in festival mode with couple royal body guards directly on his heels. I have never thought I would be so close to not only Royalty, but men in Docker's packing heat. Dignified protection.

Not sure how much this one might be worth but just as we were waiting to be led up the side-stage to watch The Killers performance Prince Harry entered the port-o-potty right in front of us. Amazingly enough, the body guards waited for him to exit and when he did…Photo credit Andy Ridley

Watching The Killers perform to a sea of people in the rain was cool…We celebrated into the wee hours of the morning and slept it off the next day.

BIRMINGHAM - The Home of Metal

This show was anticipated for us, as we were there not long before with The Bravery and were looking forward to our inaugural headline voyage. The best part about this one was not only seeing some fans awaiting our arrival in line as we arrived but the interpretive dancing chap with corn rows shouting at us as we played through our set. I didn't realize until Card brought it to my attention that it was the same guy that was screaming that it was his Birthday, shirtless at The Bravery show three months ago. Yep, amazing…

We drove through the night after the show, entertained by a hard nosed game of 'Would You Rather…' "Would you rather be baldheaded with a birthmark on your dome in the shape of cock-n-balls or have a hairline that starts 1" above your eyebrows?" Good question.

This was followed by a new game we created called 'At Capacity'. The object of this one is to think of a ridiculous support scenario and choose between the lesser of two evils. For example: 'At capacity: Nickelback or WHAM!?' The first game was funny…the second stressed us out to invision the obligation of a horrible reality. Found it to be a tad masochistic but we were quite entertained driving through the night to Newcastle to say the least. Our surrogate home away from home. Bridgette's Manor. xoxo Wey aye, man.

More UK Babies arrived to this show to greet us before we performed. When we arrived, I saw we had barely missed ANVIL playing the same room. SHIT! If you haven't seen the documentary, "The Story of Anvil", do yourself the favor.

That show went well and was our first opportunity to play a full set which was a lot of fun and a nice change from our standard 30 minute banger we had been playing on the past two passes through England in support slots. Many thanks to all the fans for making the trip to see us and hanging out after for photos and such.

After some much needed rest and a great visit with our tour mom, Bridgette, we set off again to our next stop, Manchester. HERE WE, HERE WE…HERE WE FOOKIN GOOOOO!

Celtic Crossroads feat. Colin Clyne, Patric Petrie, and David Lally 6/15/2011

A few weeks ago, I got a message from Colin Clyne (SDMA nominee for Best Acoustic) inviting me to an upcoming show in Oceanside. I first met Colin back at an event that Peggy Calhoun had put together at U-31, and I've been booking him at West Coast Tavern on occasion over the months. Unfortunately, sometimes I can't be at WCT on Thursdays if I have to work at another show...the unpredictability of freelancing...so I really hadn't seen Colin play in some time. When Saturday rolled around, I was at the OB Street Fair and decided to see if Colin's offer was still open and within an hour or so, I was getting dropped off at his place to spend the day in Oceanside along with his lovely wife Fiona, Patric Petrie and their friend Tom.

I didn't really have any expectations of the day or night but it ended up turning into an all around great weekend. We arrived in Oceanside around 4pm, quickly unloaded gear into the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, and went to a bar next door that had food, beer, and a hodgepodge band playing in the middle of the afternoon. We had a beer before the musicians returned to the theatre. The rest of us decided we would be of no use in the theatre and returned to the bar. Celtic Crossroads opened it's doors around 6:30 and was about ten tickets shy of a sellout. There were friends and fans and a ton of seniors that gave the impression that they attend any event held in the theatre. I only mention the seniors because the bar where we had been drinking had a hip-hop show, so you can imagine the hilarity of the culture clash during intermission as 70 year old white women spilled onto the side walk with 20-something Samoan, Filipino, Latino and African-American kids. Oh, and there was a mobile tattoo bus in front. I loved it.

Anyway, back to the show. The idea was to have the three performers from Ireland and Scotland play some original songs, a couple traditional songs, and some big group cover songs. I was plenty entertained and I was impressed by all of the musicians on stage. Admittedly, I heard three ladies leave at intermission because they wanted traditional songs, which by their book probably meant 6 different renditions of "Danny Boy", but the rest of the audience seemed happy throughout the show, though I'm not sure David Lally really assessed the crowd before attempting a singalong to Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons.

Here's a playlist of some of the night's music:

After the show, we went to Davina's Cabo Lounge...we were about 18 people...so getting tables was complicated but once we did, we had a fun time though we were obviously fish out of water. At the end of the night, I stayed with Colin and Fiona and we rehashed the night till about 4 in the morning until I retired to their guest bedroom. When we all awoke and showered and such, they took me home to let Pascha out and we headed over to West Coast Tavern for Resurrection Brunch with Robin Roth.

Let me say this very clearly. Do not ever attempt to go drink for drink with a Scotsman. You will lose. Colin's friend Alan joined us and we ended up spending the entire afternoon at WCT talking about music and Alan's colorful history in music. When we were finally done there five hours later, we went to Bar Pink, and when we were done there, we went to the Casbah. Someone should've put a fork in me at that point, but I continued on to see Tune-Yards at Soda Bar and then hung out with my neighbors after I got home. I suppose sometimes you have to let go and that I did for sure, and came out on the other side with some great friends and great memories.
