Casbah Shows This Week: October 1-7, 2012

There are a ton of great shows at the Casbah and presented by the Casbah this week and I know this is a walk-up town and nobody likes to commit to anything by buying tickets in advance, but as far as I can tell, none of these are sold out just yet, so start navigating your week and get your fill of amazing talent (run-on sentences be damned). As always, you can check out the Casbah site here.  I know it is a little challenging to navigate (you have to check the featured, "simple", "extended", and "outside shows" separetely, but we're really close to being done with the new site which will have an easier interface as well as a mobile version. Fingers crossed we'll be ready to launch this month.

Just to be clear, for shows at the Casbah, doors are at 8:30 and are 21+. Generally the first band goes on at 9 (when there are 3 or more bands) or 9:30 (for bills with just two bands), with headliners onstage by 11 (or 11:30 on weekends).

For the shows at the Irenic, doors are at 7 and tend to be over by 10pm. Beer & wine is available for purchase for those 21+ with ID.  Spreckels is about the same. Soda Bar has a schedule similar to the Casbah, with headliners on around 11. 4th and B is a little bit earlier, with doors at 8 and the opener on by 9pm. With a 30-45 minute set, you can expect Dr. Dog to hit the stage around 9:45 or 10pm.

Win Tickets to Sleigh Bells @ 4th&B Tuesday Night

A couple of months ago we showed you some original Sleigh Bells art work to announce the band's latest release, Reign of Terror. Now they are coming back to  San Diego (21+) and I recommend you get your tickets soon (sorry).  If you feel like gambling we are giving away a pair of tickets to see Sleigh "F" Bells and if you win congratulations  you are welcome, enjoy.

Seriously please follow the DIRECTIONS or you may not be a winner.

Here's how to win. Since FACEBOOK made us switch to timeline, LIKE san diego:dialed in on Facebook, and leave a comment in which you mention (1) you want Sleigh Bells tickets (2) anything else. You can tell me why you love or hate the new timeline, advice on how to customize Facebook with cool tricks, why you love Sleigh Bells, or 4th&B, or Goldenvoice (supplier of the tickets for giveaway), whatever. Let's face it, it's hard to pick a "random" winner, so the better the post, the more likes your comment will get, and the higher consideration you'll get for tickets, but I'll try to make it as random as possible. *You must be 21+, you must be available to attend the show on Tuesday night, tickets are non-transferable. I'll pick a name on Monday evening at 6pm. If I message you and don't hear back within an hour, I'll pick someone else. If you don't have Facebook notifications on your mobile device, I dunno what to tell you.

Check out Sleigh Bells' performance on SNL after the jump.

Mutemath Announce 2012 Tourdates & VIP Packages

Photo Credit: Claire Vogel, Courtesy WBR
Web analytics used to be top-secret. You never really knew how anyone else was doing and you'd hear hype from all corners that made everything sound like it was the most amazing thing ever. With recent integrations, like Slacker and Spotify linking directly to Facebook walls, it is easy to see when something is reaching a fever pitch. Lately, it seems, at least among the people I pay attention to on Twitter and Facebook, that everyone has been listening to the new Mutemath record, Odd Soul, and going absolutely bonkers for it. With that in mind, the band has just announced tour dates for 2012, including a February 3rd stop at 4th & B and they're offering exclusive VIP merch and ticket packages starting today.

An Odd Soul VIP Package for the 2012 tour dates will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time today at http://mutemath.artistarena.com/. For $75, purchasers will receive:

Cut Copy Returns To San Diego: Win Tickets Here

I might be mistaken, but I don't think that Cut Copy has been to San Diego since they played a downtown parking lot for the Red Bull Air Races, which I believe was at least four years ago. Like I said, I could be wrong, but regardless, it has been WAY TOO LONG and they're finally returning. The band is currently on a North American tour which brings them to 4th and B on October 14. This is the first of the Bring On The Bright Lights concert series that will bring top artists back to our fine city. Tickets are $25 for general admission or you can reserve a box for $35/pp. Grab your tickets here or leave a comment on my Facebook Page and let me know you wanna go and I'll pick a winner of a pair of tickets by the end of the week. The show is 21+.

CSS at 4th & B October 7: Win Tickets Before You Can Buy Them!!

Earlier this week, 4th & B announced a show with CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) and Men taking place on October 7. Well, sometimes I'm people who know people, and 4th & B generously sent me TEN tickets to giveaway before you can even buy the tickets tomorrow. It's been awhile since the Brazilian crew has been back to San Diego; if I'm not mistaken they canceled their last show because of visa issues or something of the sort.

Earlier this week, CSS did a remix of one of my favorite new artists, Givers. Check out the remix of "Up, Up, Up" here

I don't want to just give these away willy-nilly, so you're gonna have to work for them. Using your Facebook or Twitter account, you have to plug the show in your own creative way. Be sure to tag @sddialedin & @4thandB on Twitter or Rosemary Bystrak & 4th&B on Facebook. I'll give away THREE pairs through this method, so you have about 24 hours and I'll name winners from all the entries.

For the other TWO pair, I'm going to at least three shows tonight, two shows tomorrow, and who knows how many over the weekend. Follow me on Foursquare (which also updates my Twitter and Facebook), find me and tell me you want CSS tickets and I'll take your name and phone number and choose winners at the end of the weekend. So technically it's not before you can buy them, but close enough. Keep in mind that 4th&B is a 21+ venue. I can't believe I'm inviting you to stalk me. Don't be a weirdo, mmkay?

If you don't wanna take your chances that this sells out, you can buy tickets starting on Friday. Click here for info.

Video: O.M.D. at 4th & B, March 26, 2011

A couple weeks ago I was passed out on my bed after a day spent at The Handlery Hotel for their Suds For Surgery beer festival when I awoke to Robin Roth banging on my door. "ROSEY!!! WAKE UP!! Are we going to O.M.D. or what??!!" I wiped the drool off my face and we headed to the sold out show at 4th & B. I don't really listen to much from the 80s, but in tth grade I had a crush on a friend's older brothers and I thought my way to his heart was by becoming well versed in his favorite band which happened to be O.M.D. Though I don't think I've listened to them since then, it was great catching them live, especially because their tour was so limited. Check out "Electricity" below and another video after the jump (click keep on reading). I have a ton of recent videos posted on my YouTube channel if you feel like perusing (sort by date added).

Brazilian Carnivale at 4th&B, March 5, 2011

I got such a huge response to my Tijuana adventure that I am just gonna tell you right now, I don't have any crazy epic tales to tell from last night. In fact, quite the opposite. After finally going to sleep around 7 am, I got some sleep in and then pretty much stayed in my pajamas all day as I tried to wrestle my inbox down to manageable. As a result, I missed Greg Gerding's book release. Sorry, Greg. You know I love you.

By the time all was said and done, me, Mike, and Nima set off to downtown around 9:30. I had been guaranteed 2 passes, so we were gonna try and find a contact who might be able to hook us up. We parked (two cars, because Nima had other plans) and as we were walking toward 4th & B, my friend Joe came up behind me. He promotes and produces shows around town on occasion, including 4th&B, and though this wasn't his event, I explained our predicament. He said he'd see what he could do. When we got to ticketing, I wasn't on any list, then realized the event coordinator had asked for my address but I hadn't received anything in the mail. Long story short, no tickets for me, but Joe talked to Vince, the owner, and he's super chill and he let us to walk in. Awesome.

I should rewind a little and say I was apprehensive about going to the event for pretty random reasons. The last time I attended the Carnivale event, I randomly saw a friend from college who told me that one of my dear friends had died from cancer. It was quick, like 6 months from diagnosis to death, so not many people even knew Mikey was sick. Anyway, that lingering memory was all that I can think of when I think of Carnivale.

Fortunately, Brazilians are a beautiful and vibrant culture, so upon entering the doors, you're instantly transported elsewhere and it is a really fun time. Unless you're Seth Combs and lived in Brazil for a year and scoff at such events as "generic". To you, well, thanks for not being there, because for what I'd guess were about 900 people, there were nothing but smiles and nobody needs you pissing on your difference of opinion about what constitutes "fun".

I found myself a pricey capirinha and proceeded to attempt to shoot some photos. There was so much going on, with all the dancing, the lights, the pom poms, and Sol e Mar performing, I just wasn't very successful. So, sorry Brittany. I'm sure the other photogs got some shots for you. These are the best I could/was motivated do (when I wasn't dancing).

This Sunday: Lucha VaVoom At 4th & B

While I'm looking forward to North Park Music Thing and all that it will deliver this weekend, I am also looking forward to Sunday night at 4th & B, when LA cult sensation Lucha VaVoom makes it's first appearance in San Diego. I've been aware of Lucha VaVoom for at least a couple years since Joe Escalante was always talking about it on Indie 103.1. A mix of Mexican masked wrestling and burlesque, the night is certainly bringing something new to San Diego. The Bronx will be performing as their alter-egos, "Los Mariachi Bronx" to round out the night. For more information, check out Lucha VaVoom online.

As a bonus, I've got TWO pairs of tickets to give away! Email me with subject Lucha Libre. Must be 21+. Include your phone number so I can notify the winner. Winners will be announced on Friday.

To read the full press release, click 'keep on reading'.

Full Press Release:

L.A.’s cult hit Lucha VaVOOM, a revved-up, adrenaline-fueled collision of the best in masked Mexican wrestling, titillating striptease and side-splitting comedy, will head south this summer, bringing San Diego a taste of its crowd-pleasing combo of “sexo y violencia.” The one-night-only, 21+ extravaganza, will mark LVV’s area debut, to take place at 4th and B. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.

A much-talked about phenomenon, Lucha VaVOOM has brought traditional Lucha libre wrestling to the masses for nearly seven years by adding a scintillating element of retro burlesque dancing to the testosterone-filled matches. This winning marriage has scored raves from the likes of Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times and has been featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” as well as Mun Dos, Current TV, Telemundo and “A Current Affair.”

An evening at Lucha VaVOOM is like nothing you have ever witnessed before. The night seamlessly alternates between highly skilled luchadores taking one another, and burlesque beauties taking it off. For this debut, Lucha has culled together their best of the best. The masked mammal, Shamu Jr. will team up with the venomous Mexican goat sucker, Chupacabra to battle Leon de Oro and the almighty Fantastico. Crowd-favorites Los Crazy Chickens will squawk up a riot and let the feathers fly as they go head-to-head with the devilish Los Rockers Del Diablo.

Not content to let the boys have all the fun, the fiery femme fatales the Poubelle Twins, will show them that they can play just as rough… and look better doing it. The main match will be a black light blowout: Tiny but evil Dr. Atom, with his huge-henchman, Dr. Maldad, will square up against cross-dressing combater, Cassandro and his teammate, mini superstar, Ultimo Dragoncito in this psychedelic showdown.

In between matches, astounding burlesque acts will dazzle and amaze. Tassel queen, Lucy Fur will hypnotize with her hidden talent and go-go shaker, Moana Santana, will shimmy and shake it off. International dance star and hula-hoop hot stuff, Karis will mesmerize and confound in more ways than one.

The host with the most Blaine Capatch will crack wise with his comedic comrade Spongebob Squarpants' Tom Kenny as they offer up some hilarious play-by-play of the night's action and help steer this kaleidoscopic carnival of brawn, beauty and the bizarre.

Overdue Recap: FM 94/9 Anniversary Show & more

On November 8, I spent the day with my family with not nearly enough sleep. My cousin came down from LA, and I actually got up early enough for breakfast. My cousin bribed me with the promise of a treated breakfast, lunch and dinner, and though I would've gone anyway, it was nice spending the day with family.

We started at Kono's in PB for breakfast, then hung out at Balboa Park. Here, my niece, my cousin, myself, and my mom, in assorted variety.

After a lovely day in the park, we had dinner at Nick's, I got my car, raced home to let my dog out and to change, then made it to 4th & B to arrive during the FM 94/9's band special set. Jake left me a ticket at will call and fortunately Junior let me jump the line so I could get in time for some photos.

Click 'keep on reading' for more pictures and full post.

So, the whole FM 94/9 crew went all out for their 6th anniversary show, playing a short 5 or 6 song set featuring Halloran, Pyles, Boomer, Trav, Drew, Owen, Anya, Swami, a couple guest moments from Brian Karscig of Louis XIV, Jake Najor on drums, and a bunch of other peeps from the station and guest moments. To me, it was the best part of the night.

When the FM 94/9 band finished, The Dirt Bombs took the stage and while I was enjoying their music, it was waaay crowded and being the broke biatch I was, I was not about to buy a drink to let myself loosen up, not to mention being completely exhausted from a day in the sun with family.

I ran into some friends and chatted briefly, but I decided I would make an escape to get some stiff drinks nearby, so I walked to Chee Chee. There was a crowd, Jeff was working, and I chatted with some girls from LA who heard that Chee Chee was the least expensive bar in downtown. After sucking a few down, I made my way back to 4th & B and hung out with Natalie during the end of Delta Spirit's set. This is the part where I'll admit that I probably would've stayed for the whole show had I been offered a photo pass, but I was told that none were given out, which was clearly a lie, since Natalie had one (though she's a real photographer, I know) and Norton had one, along with all the 94/9 peeps. I know I'm spoiled but I was feeling like the show was well covered, and there was no way the show was gonna satisfy me, despite the awesome lineup.

Natalie tried to keep me at the show, but after about 20 minutes of waiting for TV On The Radio, I was over it. I skipped out on and made my way to the Casbah for Electric Six. I ran into Tim Mays at the Casbah and he asked if I was a fan of the band. "No, I'm a fan of the Casbah." And that was the truth. I got there late into their set and the show was fun, loose, and the sold out crowd wasn't lost on the band. "You all could've been seeing TV On The Radio tonight, but instead you're here. And we appreciate it." It turned out to be a fun night, I guess I needed an energy/vodka infusion to let me really relax and release.

And it was nice to be called again early the next day for some more family time. It was a nice fall day, a bit chilly outside (unlike the past week that has felt hotter than summer) and I got to run around my sister's neighborhood with my niece who will climb any set of stairs that cross her path. It was chilly enough that we put her back in her halloween costume to keep her warm.

Oh, and there were so many things I planned on doing on Sunday, but I was abducted by my family. I wanted to see Elf Power at the Casbah, but my dad guilted me and I ended up hanging out with my parents and we went to Harrah's Rincon Casino. They talked me into it with the promise of dinner, some play money, and $2 Oktoberfest pints of beer. When you're unemployed, you can't really decline the offer of dinner, cash, and beer. So I went and though I love going to shows and going out, there's something really cool about sitting at a sports bar, playing video poker, and drinking $2 pints of Paulaner and Warsteiner with your mom. And with that, the weekend ended and it was time for me to get some sleep and prepare for the SD:Dialed In 2 year anniversary show.

M.I.A. & Holy Fuck @ 4th & B, 4.28.08

I feel like I haven't been able to keep up with things the past couple weeks, and I find myself, when I do have the time, staring blankly at my screen not knowing what to write. I didn't really recap on the week before last because while I still went out a couple nights, there wasn't really anything that notable that happened other than my camera breaking, and really, that's only notable to me.

I caught Firethorn at their CD release show, but Natalie recapped it quite well here. I also went to The Spits show at the Ken Club, but it was super packed and I didn't take pictures. It was a fun show and there were a lot of drunk-off-their-asses people there, and that night ended with an after party at my house. Unfortunately, my cold returned and I spent Coachella weekend at home being sick listening to 94/9's Coachella broadcast on the radio while I mostly vegged out.

When Monday night rolled around, I was ready for M.I.A. and just getting back out of the house. After having such a hard time at Death Cab For Cutie, I bought a new camera on an impulse, perhaps not the best way to make a purchase, but I thought I was set for a photo pass. Unfortunately, I got to the show way too early and waited over an hour outside. When I got in, I watched Holy Fuck from upfront, then hung back waiting for my pass. Holy Fuck was awesome, by the way. Four dudes onstage rocking out with a couple turntables, a guitar, and a full drumset. The set was mostly instrumental noise, but they had a couple bangers where they added vox, too. I thought they kicked ass.

Unfortunately, I couldn't really chill out because I was still chasing down the photo pass, and it wasn't until Maya was moments from taking the stage that I was told her tour manager wasn't allowing any photo passes, or any more, or something like that, but the point was, the sold out crowd was already pressed up to the stage and I wasn't feeling aggressive enough to try and make a move, so I just hung back and enjoyed the show. M.I.A. sounded great and she's so incredibly sexy onstage, even in funky outfits that nobody but M.I.A. could pull off. She was all over the stage, along with some backup dancers, and it was cool that there were a couple risers so people could see her from anywhere in the room. It appeared as if everyone in the room was taking pictures or video, so you can see a lot of videos on YouTube.

The show was pretty nuts, but after it ended I wasn't ready to call it a night. Unfortunately, I got to my car and realized I had a headlight out, so I went straight home. Better that way, though, since it turned out to be a pretty busy week.

M.I.A. Paper Planes Live (A Preview For Monday)

If you're planning on heading to 4th & B on Monday night for M.I.A., here's a little video of what you might expect. This video for "Paper Planes" was shot live in Philly.

Cat Power, 4.16.08., 4th&B

Last week was a bit hectic, so I'm getting to the posting now. Wednesday was a bit hectic. I had to be at 4th&B by 7, so I rushed home after work, ate a quick dinner, and just before I was about to head of, an ex showed up at my house out of the blue so I could meet his dog. Apparently not contacting him for oh, 2 years, warranted the unexpected visit, but I had to roll so lates, bro.

I arrived at 4th&B and entered from the side. I was selling merch for Cat Power, so I met the manager outside, caught opener Appaloosa's sound check for a minute, then we got right to work, counting inventory and hanging a display. I had a little time after setting up and Tim was working the show, so we went to hang out on the side for a minute before doors. Chan borrowed my lighter. That was my only contact I had with her for the night. I was glad I didn't really address her, because it wasn't until that night that I learned her name was pronounced "Sean" and not like Jackie Chan. I'm not gonna lie...I don't have any of her albums and I couldn't tell you a single song she sings, except perhaps a couple of her covers. I was glas I was working because I was hoping to understand the big deal, maybe be converted to a fan.

It was fun working the table because so many of my friends were there. I was able to score Natalie a photo pass, so she agreed to give me 3 "exclusive" photos for my site. You can see other examples of her photography on her site here, and a little side note, Natalie is the only photographer being sent to Coachella by Pitchfork Media, so make sure to check her results in the next couple weeks.

The show started with local Addiquit performing a couple songs. It was awkwardly short, and there was no set change when Appaloosa came out since they both seemed to just have some prerecorded beats. I'm happy to report, being that she's local, that several people asked me about Addiquit, and I was happy to write down her myspace page for them.

Addiquit

Appaloosa is from France and was really sweet to me when she found out I was selling her CDs. A few people really weren't digging the set, but plenty of others asked me about her and bought the album, so I guess it was a mixed reaction. The complaints weren't about the music necessarily, but that the show felt like someone messing around with beats in their bedroom and wasn't much to watch on such a huge stage.

Finally Cat Power took the stage. I didn't really get to see the show at all from where I was, and I was disappointed that what I did hear was a whole lot of complaining. "My throat is shot." "What's with these lights?" "Is this room the San Diego aquarium?" and finally, "This is the worst show ever." It wasn't a great show, and to her defense, the next day Cat Power had to cancel several dates because she had wrecked her vocal chords, but it made me wonder why she still felt compelled to play a nearly two hour set.

I watched the crowd flood out after only the first hour, but she kept playing. I think many in San Diego wished that our show was cancelled, too, or at least postponed to a date when she was healthy and all of her stage banter wasn't just a whole bunch of complaints, because while it may have been about the sound, or the lights, or the room, the truth is, when you complain about our city, our town, our venues, it only sounds like you're complaining about us, and we get a little defensive.

After the show, I counted out and got out really late, but stopped by the Ken to be with my peeps and to take a load off, and that I did. I had a good night, I only wish that the people who paid so much for those tickets could say the same.

Beto Cuevas "Aqui"

I didn't intend to record any video at 4th&B the other night for Beto Cuevas, especially since my battery was a little low, but I decided to catch some of "Aqui" because Beto's voice is just amazing. So many people were taking pictures and recording, I was hoping to find someone who was closer or who captured a whole song, but the sound on the few I've found is absolutely terrible, so I decided I would post this half capture just to give an idea of how great the performance was. This song is "Aqui" from La Ley's album, Uno.

Beto Cuevas "Aqui"
