Rosey's Diary: 2.25.09 - 3.03.09

I caught up with a few way overdue posts yesterday, but I quickly realized that part of the reason I haven't been writing is because I have been so incredibly busy, and when I have room to breathe, I have actually been giving myself time away from the computer. That said, I'll pick up where I left off at the end of February. If you care to read my diary, click 'keep on reading'.

2.25.09: AC Newman, Dent May @ Casbah, Karaoke @ Soda Bar

I sold merch for AC Newman and Dent May, so I didn't really get to see the show, but Dent May is this amazing band with a eukele as the centerpiece. I was a little surprised the show wasn't sold out, especially since there was such demand for Neko Case tickets just a week later, but there were plenty of people who told me that A.C. Newman's first album, A Slow Wonder changed their lives. Carl was kind enough to sign a tour poster for me at the end of the night.

The show ended quite early because the band was playing on KEXP the next morning and had to be up by 4 a.m., so this gave me time to hit the Soda Bar where I ran into friends on Kipper's Karaoke Night. They tried to get me to sing, but as I've said before, it is NEVER going to happen, so instead I played pool with a guy who lives around the corner from the bar and asked if I was a student at SDSU. Considering I graduated college in 1998, I have to say I was more than flattered. The bar was a bit slow so they closed down a little early and I was on my way to prepare for another day.

2.26.09: Kinky @ House of Blues, N.A.S.A.@ Casbah

The next night I made my way downtown with a Jonathan and Xavie to see Kinky. I had won 10 tickets from Kinky and thought I'd take my best friends who both had upcoming birthdays, but they couldn't make it after all, so I hooked up some friends with tickets. When we arrived, the line was crazy and the first band hadn't started, so we decided to hit up The Local. On Thursday nights they have $3 pints and other great drink specials, so we stayed there for quite some time, bumping into a few of my friends who were on a pub crawl. When we finally left to the show, Kinky was about to take the stage. I smuggled my camera in, as did half the audience, but could never really get close enough to the stage for any real results, so this is the best I got, and actually the photo on the left was taken from the balcony when we were getting drinks. It's funny that I get press releases so frequently from the band's publicity agency but they couldn't hook up a photo pass or tickets for the actual show. I don't hold it against the band at all and they gave a stellar performance and it seems to me that of all the shows I go to, the rock en espanol crowds are by far the most frenzied and enthusiastic at shows, perhaps because they don't happen very often.

Kinky, House of Blues, 2.26.09 Kinky, House of Blues, 2.26.09

After the show, we made our way to see N.A.S.A., a DJ duo, at the Casbah. It was fun and the crowd was in full dance party mode, but personally I just don't get the whole DJ thing. I felt like I was at Mr. Crown's or Safari in Tijuana back in 1993, which is all good and fun, but I guess I'm just always gonna be someone who prefers to see live bands. Maybe I should look into ecstasy?

2.27.09: Swim Party + Writer (Split 7" Release Party), Joel P West @ Whistle Stop

Because I was going to be on a music panel on Saturday, I opted to steer clear of any drinks on this night, which was a damn shame because all my favorite people were there and everyone was having a blast. Joel P West started off the night and where my photos as Whistle Stop generally suck, now that my camera is failing and making everyone purple, you can really see why I didn't really bother with photos that night:

Joel P West, Whistle Stop, 2.27.09

Still, Joel told me he's taking some time to work on new songs and hopefully start recording a new album so I'm looking forward to that. He's a high school teacher so I guess spring break gave him some time to play shows including this one, one at Soda Bar, and another at TNT, all in the span of a week. His songs simultaneously make me happy and sad inside and his vocals backed by beautiful string arrangements make him an artist to watch.

To make it an extra special night, Writer and Swim Party were releasing their split 7" record and played together. Eli, Jaime, Andy, Petro, Alex, and Erik all played along, and even had Natalie on keys for a couple songs. For the most part they alternated between Swim Party and Writer songs that just made for this amazing superband that couldn't be drowned out by the beyond packed Whistle Stop. The $5 records can be purchased at either bands' shows.

2.28.09: Associated College Press Panel, Sight & Sound feat. Jamuel Saxon, Swim Party, Joanie Mendenhall, art, performers, and more. Hosted by ME! @ Planet Rooth Seth Combs B-day Party featuring Transfer @ Ruby Room

I had been invited by San Diego Union-Tribune music critic George Varga to be on a panel for the National Association of College Newspapers convention that was held in San Diego. Once I got over the feeling of "what the hell am I even doing here", we actually had a great discussion about music journalism and it was cool to be on a panel with Bart Mendoza, Marc Balanky, Keli Dailey, and my blog partner-in-crime, Natalie Kardos. Natalie and I stayed after for a while and chatted with some students until we finally had to bail so she could dye her hair blue. I didn't have much time to do anything after because I had to be at Planet Rooth by 6 to get squared away for my night of being MC for Sight & Sound. I know it's a bit of an oddity for someone like me who hates being photographed or onstage to be at two events in the same day where I was on a mic, but it ended up being a really good time...at least once I was able to introduce the bands. There was a long wait between my arrival and the festivities beginning, so Natalie and I walked to Sicilian Thing and had some pizza before returning. I took to my hosting duties, but the actors and carnival people just kinda did their own thing, starting before I got through my intros, so who am I to argue with thespians or a carnival woman with a painted clown face?

There was a contortionist, a young acrobat on a Chinese pole, a duo who did a scene from a play, and then Joanie Mendenhall playing solo. And, as self depracating as she can be, she sounded great. She wanted me to introduce her as a "five time San Diego Award loser."

Joanie Mendenhall, Planet Rooth, 2.28.09

After Joanie the crowd moved outside, where I introduced a comedy/acrobatic group called the Platt Brothers who had this choreographed dance routine that was pretty funny. I was really happy to be able to introduce Swim Party, and later beatboxer Generic, who ended up joining forced with Jamuel Saxon. It was also cool because some of the students that were at the conference earlier in the day came to the event. (Although their advisors left after an awkward jaunt into The Rubber Rose. They explained that they were from a conservative Jewish school on the east coast and I felt bad for not even thinking about warning them.)

Sight And Sound, Planet Rooth, 2.28.09

I hung out for a few minutes after the show but I wanted to catch Transfer at Ruby Room, too, so I said my goodbyes and headed over. I missed the show, walking in during the band's last song, but I at least got to wish Seth a happy birthday and chat with Matt and Sean for a bit. I think I might try and do an sddialedin.com show soon, and it will likely be at The Ruby Room, so I'll keep y'all posted.
Matt Molarius & Sean Cute, Ruby Room, 2.28.09

After all that goodness, I took a couple days off from going out and actually wrote a bunch, catching up from the previous month. Yikes. I think I need a better time management system. I'll pick up this diary post in the next post...

YouTube: The New Archaic "A New Future"

The New Archaic are a relatively new San Diego band. They've already had promising shows at Casbah and Belly Up (as recorded in this video).
From their bio:
They are based in Encinitas, 18 & 19 years old, college students and have been involved in the local music scene with previous bands for several years.

The band founder, Joe Harrison, comes from the punk scene with his previous band, The Wrecking Crew and his tour performances with The Adolescents for the past three years. The New Archaic's sound is far removed from that of punk but rather borders along the Alternate/Pop/Rock genre.

They recently released a four song, self-titled EP produced by Grammy nominated producer, Steve Churchyard and Big Fish Studios resident engineer Ben Moore. The band has already written additional songs to possibly include with the EP for a full length CD before the end of the year.

Drew's Blog #3

SXSW was so insane there wasn't a moment for blogging...(this is a good thing) but now here we are, back to the wonderful world of characters numbers microchips....and continuing more adventures in a weird little nation called Texas.

We arrived in Austin on Wednesday night - it's hard to describe quite the insanity at SXSW, the thousands of thousands of drunk onlookers and industry folk, hunting down parties, on the make for free schwag, free beer, free food, free this free that, lusty eyes darting throughout the streets and against the walls, drums from the left, emo bands screaming from the right, harmonicas above you, bouncers waiting below you in the underground sold out show....it is A Clockwork Orange, strapped in your seat, eyes pried open Disneyland parades and strobe lights left right and center, take this drink, here's my number - it's maddening...and it is amazing.

I was taking care of business a bunch, which is too dull to write about, but some hot bands we saw included: Trail of Dead, Richard Swift, Dear and the Headlights. Obits, Tiny Vipers, Tom Brosseau, and God knows who else. Planning shows was made difficult by long lines, and stupid buzz on bands that have already come and gone over the weekend. 1800 bands. Wow wow wow.

Our showcase went well, playing in front of the label for just the second time, afterwards was chaos of schmooze...it was successful and we look forward to coming back!!

Special props go out to Phil and his wife Dina who housed us and made us vegetarian/vegan Indian food for breakfast every morning, they were lifesavers and we thank them much!

San Diego folks were in abundance, and some boozing and hanging was done with Team Abraham, Eric/Heather M-Theory, Writer, Jake, and many more I'm not listing...yalls know who you are!

Last night we played Dallas where I met up with my birth mother and brother...and my name sake nephew, little Drew! He is almost 3 and we had never met. He is shy and plays by himself and doesn't know how to act around pretty girls...I love him already!!

Tonight: Marfa, TX!!!

FM 94/9 About The Music presents Dead Confederate, Transfer @ Belly Up, 2.24.09

AVicio.us already posted some video from the Transfer show at Belly Up, but I came across a few of my pictures from that night and I thought I'd post them. I really love the FM 94/9 About The Music series, and though I hadn't been in a while, it's a triple win for packing the venue, allowing fans to see bands on the rise without spending a lot of cash (usually $6), and giving local bands an opportunity to open for touring acts. This night was no exception and though we arrived too late to catch Heavy Young Heathens, Transfer impressed as usual with a great show and had the sold out crowd mesmerized. While regular fans of local music know and love Transfer, there were plenty of people who were seeing the band for the first time (and they even sold out of CDs). For the full post and pictures, click 'keep on reading'.
Dead Confederate, Belly Up, 2.24.09

I had the pleasure of being up front for the duration of the show which was awesome save for the broskis who tried to start a mosh pit and kept screaming at Matt between songs to 'just start the music already'. It takes a lot more than getting pushed around for me to give up my position so I held out and stayed up front.

I was lucky enough to see Dead Confederate last year at the Casbah, so while I thought the show at the Belly Up was great, the effect of the lights wasn't as powerful as it was at the Casbah show, and I couldn't help but get sad that this band will probably not be playing many more small club shows. I know I wasn't the only person loving the performance and eventually the pushing and moshing started, only this time by girls who were completely wasted and yelling inappropriate things at the band. I guess people don't realize if a singer is just a couple feet away, they can actually hear the retarded shit they're yelling at them. That for me was enough to find my friends and watch the show from a different vantage point and honestly, even when I wasn't up front, I was still blown away by the performance.

Anti-Monday League feat. French Kicks, The Broken West, Army Navy @ Casbah, 2.23.09

I skipped a couple nights of shows because I instead opted for a day long pub crawl (using the #11 city bus) that took us to The Ken Club, Ponce's, Blind Lady, The Alibi, The Ruby Room, Wine Steals/Taste, Taang! Records, and The Wits End. I tweeted about it all day and apparently we will be having another one soon, so when we lay it out, I'll post the date and our planned route and anyone can join us along the way. It really was fun for a mere $5 all day bus pass.

Anyway, after a couple nights without shows, I went back to the Casbah on the 23rd for Anti-Monday League to check out Black Lips, The Broken West, and Army Navy. For the full post, click 'keep on reading'.

I was really there to see Army Navy. Not that I wasn't into the other bands, but I saw Army Navy at the Beauty Bar a while ago and have really enjoyed their self titled album. They're very pop driven and their feel good music would be well suited for fans of The Morning Benders, or locally with bands like The Modlins and Gray Ghosts. I thought they gave a great energetic performance, though I could do without their cover of the 1975 hit, "Right Back Where We Started From", not because they don't do it well but just because the song has always grated on me. Blame endless family roadtrips listening to oldies stations.

Army Navy

The Broken West was great as well, though I almost missed part of their set as some guys chatted with me on the patio about how awesome they are. The singer had great charisma onstage and I thought they had a kind of Squeeze or Crowded House style to them which to me was a winning sound.
The Broken West The Broken West

The Broken West The Broken West

The French Kicks headlined the show, but sadly unlike last time I saw them with the lights up, they had the lights really low and red and the singer is so tall that the low light was mostly on the band's torsos, so I put my camera away and just enjoyed the show and the company of fellow Anti-Monday Leaguers.

Gram Rabbit, Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects, Bartenders Bible @ Casbah 2.20.09.

For the third night in a row I went to the Casbah. It was a bit of a last minute decision, as Todd and I had started drinking a bit early. That said, we called Taxi Rob and had him drive us to the Casbah and let's just say that the stash of drink tickets I'd saved up in January were gone by the time we left. For full post, click 'keep on reading'.

Gram Rabbit

We missed Black Hondo but were there in time to catch Bartender's Bible in the Atari
Lounge who set the tone for the night. As much as I'm not a fan of weekend warriors, this was at least the right kind of bill for a rowdy crowd looking to let loose, and I won't speak for Todd, but on this night, I was definitely one of them.

I was glad to see Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects again, mostly because though I worked at the Casbah for all of Pall's 5 different shows (1 with Mr. Tube, 1 with Blackheart Procession, and 3 Three Mile Pilot), I was on the patio selling merch for all of them, so I was happy to be able to watch the show without reservation or responsibility.

There's really only one word to describe any Gram Rabbit show: insanity. Jessica Rabbit took the stage in a one piece spandex bodysuit with a colorful jacket over and it's impossible to take your eyes off of her. And she knows it. And the fact that she knows it guarantees that the crowd is going to go apeshit right along with the band. I'm just glad that now I've learned my lesson and if invited to any form of Gram Rabbit after party, the answer is a polite, "no, thank you." Unless you're insane.

Murder By Death, The Builders & The Butchers, Fake Problems @ Casbah 2.19.09

The night after Annuals, I found myself back at the Casbah for Murder By Death, The Builders & The Butchers, and Fake Problems. The show was sold out and for good reason. The entire bill was phenomenal and I posted up front for the duration of the show. Full post if you 'keep on reading'.

Murder By Death

Fake Problems started off the night and I remember thinking that I'd just witnessed my new favorite band. They reminded me a lot of Low Red Land, driving rock with equal parts punk and country thrown in for good measure. In fact, they reminded me of LRL so much that I text messaged Mark from the show telling him he had to check them out when they made their way to San Francisco a couple days later. He was stoked and said they'd actually played together before so I knew I was on to something good. Before they even finished their set I was on the patio buying their CD so I could get back up front before the mass of people packed the Casbah. And for the record, because I'm a chick, they are cute as hell.

Fake Problems Setlist:
Fake Problems

I was already a fan of The Builders And The Butchers, but it was clear that after touring with Port O'Brien, they hit their stride and are comfortable performers owning the stage from the first song to the last. They even took a cue from Port O'Brien by producing a box of pots and pans for everyone to join in for the finale. They even topped it by handing over a huge bass drum that I and two other guys held while someone else beat the shit out of it to the music. It was hard not to get caught up in the hand-clapping goodness of their set. I suspect next time around they'll be headlining their own tour, filling in the indie rock gap left by the breakup of Margot and The Nuclear So and So's.

The Builders & The Butchers The Builders & The Butchers

I absolutely loved the acoustic bass guitar. It was a beautiful instrument and the sound was amazing. Add that to the double drumming in the back and the band really delivered a solid cohesive performance.
The Builders & The Butchers The Builders & The Butchers

The Builders & The Butchers setlist:
The Builders & The Butchers

Headlining the show was Murder By Death and I'd missed their last couple shows in San Diego. I saw them when they toured on In Bocca Al Lupo which is also the only album I own, so the fact that they played two of their other albums in their entirety from front to back was a little lost on me, but they're just a great band to catch live, albeit a lot lower energy after The Builders & The Butchers. They had some cool visuals that enhanced the overall show. I guess I need to keep up on their catalogue because the show left me wanting more Murder By Death.
