A mini-review of the Dec. 19 Duke Spirit show at the Roxy:

Good: Well-behaved, heterogeneous audience (not the usual bunch of cliched spazzing 22 y.o. hipsters knocking the ladies all over the place), every seat/standing spot in the house is a great view, a regular-sized crowd (not a fustercluck), celebrity sighthing: Rodney Bingenheimer, free schwag handed out as we left the show (stickers, posters, CD singles), he band played a benefit for Webster ES in Pasadena the next day for ten bucks, t-shirts only $15, and a variety of them to choose from, all-ages show with no hassles or uptightness from either the kids or the adults.

Bad: $10 Jack and Cokes and $7 bottled beers, no in-and-out for smoking (although my wife managed to talk them into letting her do so once), speeding dipshit nearly running into the back of our car before slamming into a concrete center divider at 100 mph at 2:30 am (this happened in SD, not in LA).

San Diegans bash on LA a lot, but LA seems comfortable with itself.
