I realized I hadn't updated listings since the weekend, so even though I'll hopefully be tagging on the next week of listings within a day or so, I wanted to at least get these to the top of the page. I'm super excited that my friends CHAPPO will be in town on Wednesday night and Darren and I are taking a bonus #datenight so that should be pretty awesome. He was teasing me about not posting much lately, but I figure I have a long, boring diary post in me somewhere but I jacked my neck and so working on a laptop is the last thing I want to be doing until the pain dissipates. Alt-J w/ Hundred Waters @ Belly Up- 04.16.13

Greater San Diego was treated to a streak of exceptional shows last week as some of the best bands out there found themselves looking to fill their time with a few shows between consecutive weekends at Coachella.  Tuesday was no exception as recent Mercury Prize winners Alt-J made their way from the desert to Solana Beach for their second SD show in four months. Gainesville, FL five piece Hundred Waters started the night for a sold out crowd at the Belly Up.  More words and photos after the jump.

The Postal Service adds West Coast dates in July

The reunited duo of Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, aka The Postal Service, fresh from playing Coachella, have just announced some new West Coast dates including a stop in San Diego at the Open Air Theatre  on the campus of SDSU on Sunday July 21. Accompanied throughout the tour by Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis, and the opening band will be the recently formed supergroup Divine Fits. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday April 26 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. Presale tickets will be available tomorrow Wednesday April 24 at 10 a.m. via the band's website,

Things To Do In San Diego: April 19-23, 2013

I am beat today...my sleep has sucked a whole bunch this week but it was totally worth it because last night at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown was awesome. We had a great dinner, saw Franz Ferdinand on the outdoor stage, then caught Grizzly Bear on the indoor stage. We got home around 3 but I couldn't fall asleep until around 6, which probably means I'll be up all night again tonight, which maybe isn't a bad thing because I like to be up when Darren gets home from work around 4am. Anyway, this weekend looks to be a great one. I'm going to the new Dizzy's spot for the first time (maybe my first Dizzy's show ever?), then to the Casbah. CityBeat Festival of Beers is tomorrow and EarthFair is on Sunday, so plenty off opportunities to enjoy this summer weather we're getting. It's also Record Store Day tomorrow, so stop by your local shop and pick up something new. I've listed the live music for M-Theory and Lou's, but don't forget other spots like Taang!, Off The Record, Record City, and Groovy Records among others. Things To Do In San Diego: April 17-18, 2013

This week has been crazy packed with amazing shows that I've felt a little overwhelmed. In fact, though I intended to go out last night, it just never happened save for a little late night bike ride over to Darren's, but tonight we are ready to enjoy the scene. It's #24hourdate night for us so you might see us out at FLUXX and the Casbah, or maybe we'll pop over to Bar Pink or The Void or Soda Bar for good measure. If you wanna go to FLUXX tonight, it's $25 at the door but I think if you hurry, you can still get hard tickets at M-Theory for $15. Not 100% positive on that, but it's worth the try.
Listings through next week are all below, which is good since tomorrow I'll be taking a little road trip with Jeff to catch Franz Ferdinand and Grizzly Bear at Pappy and Harriet's. Wednesday and Thursday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 15-16, 2013

It occurred to me earlier today that I haven't posted a diary in awhile, but maybe that is a good thing because it means my life lately has revolved more around actually doing things instead of writing about things I'm going to do or have been doing. With two days of babysitting, working the door and working merch last week, and then an action packed weekend, I just didn't have much time to catch up with much online. Anyway, Monday and Tuesday archives are after the jump. I'll catch up someday.

Tonight: Wild Nothing, Little Green Cars @ Casbah (4/15/13)

I can think of no better way to wind down from paying taxes than listening to the soothing sounds of Jack Tatum's band Wild Nothing. Playing to thousands of fans in the desert (Coachella) over the weekend will find a stark contrast to headlining the intimate confines of the Casbah. The band released their sophomore album Nocturne last summer. This is music that flows like a meandering stream, capturing the listener for the ride with pleasant songs throughout the album. The live performance duplicates the recordings beautifully, having seen the band in Tuscon last summer. I know this is a band that strives to find the perfect balance between all the components, such as reverb, lyrics, melodies and the rest. This is dream pop of the highest order. Do yourself a favor and head to the Middletown venue tonight, close your eyes for a moment, then open them and realize you are part of Wild Nothing's reality.

Make sure you arrive early for Little Green Cars, from Dublin, making their San Diego debut.

The Evens @ The Irenic April 10, 2013

 

I might as well kick off my first post with one of the most influential minds in punk history. The Evens, Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina, took over the stage of The Irenic this past Wednesday night and played a sing-a-long filled set reminiscent of a house show. Things To Do In San Diego: April 11-14, 2013

Oh, man. Last night with The Evens at the Irenic was so cool, and some of you even got your tickets taken by my little helper, Nova, who also had a blast at the show. I will update and organize these listings a little better before the weekend, but I wanted to get them posted since I'll be babysitting Zane again today while his awesome mom gets to work on her first national TV spot. So I'll be spending the day chasing an active one-year-old around the house and probably another trip to the Zoo and/or Balboa Park is in order. We're also meeting tonight about the North Park Festival of Arts, which I'm SO HAPPY is finally all booked. Anyway, Thursday through Sunday archives are after the jump.

USS Midway Live at the Landmark Tickets are here!

Yesterday I told you that I would be getting some tickets for the USS Midway Live at the Landmark. The show features Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and is presented by Jack Daniel's. Doors are at 7pm and it is a 21+ event. Today I got an early morning knock on the door from FedEx with 10 pairs of tickets to give away.


I will be all over the place the next few days, so geo-locate me and ask for your FREE tickets. I will use Foursquare to check in, and hashtag #USSMidway and an estimate of how long I will be at each location. For example, right now at 1:13 pm I am at the Casbah and will be here for another 20 minutes. Have fun keeping up with me!!

Win Tickets to Jack Daniel's Live At The Landmark!

Jack Daniel's is already one of my favorite brands for all they do for music...I mean, as the main sponsor of SoundDiego, SoundDiego Live and SoundDiego TV, they kinda keep my freelancing wheels rolling, but aside from that, I like to throw back some Tennessee whiskey every now and again, too. They've initiated a new series called "Live at the Landmark", where they host great bands at American landmarks across the country, including the Playboy Mansion in L.A., St. Louis' Gateway Arch, Grand Central Terminal in NYC, and Pearl Stable in San Antonio, Texas.

Why YOU should care about this is that the series lands here in San Diego aboard the USS Midway this Sunday, April 14. Tickets were free and given as a lottery among registrants, but that has since closed, so I may be your only hope. I am being overnighted 5 pairs (maybe 10 pairs) of tickets to the event. Since so many of you thought I was the 91X Ticket Thief and were tracking my moves, once I have the tickets in hand, I will announce via Twitter, Facebook, and here on this site that I have them. You will have to track me down through my check-ins...could be at The Evens at the Irenic, could be at M-Theory, a park, a taco shop, the Casbah, or any of my other many haunts and just ask for them. She is now a floating landmark, a living museum dedicated to veterans everywhere. On April 14th, Jack Daniel’s second Live at The Landmark concert will be live on the Midway and benefitting the U.S.S. Midway Museum. For 21 years, the roar of her flight deck has not been heard, but on April 14th, the roar will return.

Things To Do In San Diego: April 9-11, 2013

It's absolutely gorgeous outside today and my morning bike ride to Melanie's was lovely (though bumpy with the beat up streets of North Park). I'm babysitting Zane today and am looking forward to jumping on the bus after his nap and lunch to hang out at Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo for a couple hours. City Council was on a break so today is going to have all kinds of interesting agenda items in both the morning and afternoon session if you feel inclined to tune into City TV (Cox channel 24). In case you missed it, Tim Pyles and I were on KPBS Midday Edition yesterday to chat about bands coming through San Diego on their way to, from, or in between Coachella weekends. There are SO.MANY. great shows, including The Evens featuring Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat & Fugazi. The show is Wednesday night at the Irenic and tickets are only $8 with no service charge if you pick them up at M-Theory. If they run out, it appears there will be plenty of tickets at the door the night of the show. Keep in mind there are no openers, so the band will go on at 8pm. Things To Do In San Diego: April 6-8, 2013

I don't know if it was taking WebMD's advice for home remedies or the heavy dose of Bulleit Rye that I consumed last night, but Humpty Dumpty is put back together again, and it couldn't come at a better time because tonight's show at the Irenic is going to be amazing. It's also gorgeous out today, and though we spent most of it indoors and I had to handle a few hours of work, everything is just peachy. Please note that Jaymay has canceled her Sunday show at Soda Bar, but Kayoko and Saba will still perform. Saturday Through Monday archives are after the jump.

North Park Festival of Arts Main Stage Lineup

This year's North Park Festival of Arts is next month and though lineups were supposed to all be announced together, some people got a little over excited and have been announcing their participation. So I figure I might as well just spill the beans, especially because I am *SO EXCITED* about this year's lineup. This is just the Main Stage lineup, I'll add Dang's Bar Pink Beer Garden Stage lineup when I get the go ahead, but it is pretty sick, too. Things To Do In San Diego: April 4-5, 2013

What a week! Tim is out of town, so while I've been trying to keep up with Casbah duties, my cousin was in town from NYC so we were running around with family, Darren's daughter is on Spring Break so we've been trying to have some fun, all the while I'm fighting with all of my might to kick this sore throat and fluish feeling I've been having. Today, if I can win out with mind over matter, I'll be at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to see the butterflies and enjoy the day. The great news is my lineup for the North Park Festival of Arts is all set, so we'll be announcing that very soon. Thanks to everyone who submitted, I'm sorry my stage can only hold a handful of acts. Listings through next Thursday are after the jump. And, though I'm not sure if my mom is still reading my blog, today is my parents' 43rd wedding anniversary which is a pretty amazing thing, so congratulations to my loving parents. Things To Do In San Diego: April 2-3, 2013

I'm trying to keep my energy up but I have this nagging feeling like I'm getting a late season flu or something and my whole body is a little achy. It didn't stop me from a great weekend of bike riding with Darren and hanging with family while my cousin is visiting from New York. It is truly a shame that UK alt/electro/indie rockers Django Django have yet to play in San Diego- chalk it up to a perceived lack of support, booking conflicts or a distaste for fish tacos. Things To Do In San Diego: March 28-April 1, 2013

Hooray! Today is a good day. Final doctor checkup and I'm all put back together. I am so grateful that Planned Parenthood exists because they deal with far more health concerns than just pregnancies and STI's, despite what the asshole Republicans will have you believe, and their sliding scale means people like me, with no insurance, are taken care of on a sliding scale though I guess the Repubs It's gorgeous outside and I worked until 5am so I could enjoy the day, starting off with some archery and a picnic at Balboa Park and now I'm off for a bike ride. Show Preview: Caveman @ Casbah Friday March 29, 2013

Brooklyn five piece indie rockers Caveman continue their stateside trek here in San Diego this Friday. This is four days before Fat Possum releases the bands eponymous sophomore record. The label has teased us with advancing a couple of tracks on the forthcoming album. If this is a pretense of the entire work, then all signs are pointing upward as the band continues to expand its sound. At the center is lead singer Matthew Iwanusa , whose voice is so readily likable one cannot help but become somewhat transfixed on the overall effort. I was in the crowd the last time Caveman played the iconic Middletown venue, but this show promises to be even better while showcasing the band's growth. Do yourself a favor and kick off the weekend with an intimate show featuring a true up and coming band at the Casbah. Tickets can be purchased here.

Things To Do In San Diego: March 25-27, 2013

Someone woke up with a case of the Mondays today. I meant to post these yesterday and forgot and looking at my inbox, it seems there are a lot of things I forgot, so today I'm a wound up ball of stress trying to focus and handle one thing at a time until that list dwindles. It's really nice outside, too, which make it all the more tempting to just close up the laptop and play, but I need to earn my keep. Anyway, Monday through Wednesday archives after the jump.

Recommended Shows in San Diego March 25-31, 2013

Jeff Mangum by Will Deitz

The last week of March offers many quality shows in San Diego. A closer look reveals some worth attending.

On Monday Erika Wennerstrom brings blues indie rockers Heartless Bastards to the Casbah.

Spreckels Theatre is the place to be on Tuesday when Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) plays solo in front of his adoring fans.

Two Portland bands, And And And plus The We Shared Milk take over the intimate Tin Can on Wednesday.

This Thursday Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds swoop into The Griffin with their brand of soul rock.

Caveman headline the Casbah on Friday playing songs from their eponymous new record. Pure Bathing Culture opens for what promises to be a great show.

The Airborne Toxic Event begin a two night run at the House of Blues on Saturday. A few tickets remain for Sunday's show. Foxygen returns for a sold out show at Soda Bar on Saturday. Post punk rockers Iceage (Denmark) make their San Diego debut on Sunday at the Casbah.

A great week of music lies ahead for those willing to support the artists playing in America's finest city.

It's Friday night and I am so ready for the weekend. It was a beautiful day today and spring is in the air and my little feral bunny came back after not visiting for a few days so things are looking up. I almost made plans to run off to Vegas with my family next week, but I think there's so much fun to be had here that I think I'll just give myself a little spring break. Show Preview- Django Django @ The Fonda Theater- 03.23.13

There is a ton of solid live music in San Diego this weekend, but if you aren't finding anything to your liking (or didn't get tix to the sold-out Black Lips show in time), there is what will be a killer show happening at The Fonda Theater (formerly the Music Box) just off of Hollywood and Vine.   UK four-piece Django Django most recently played Southern California almost exactly six months ago (also in LA- for some reason they have yet to play a SD venue) and blew the doors off of The Echo.  Their exceptional self titled debut album translates exceptionally well to a live setting where the band takes the opportunity to ramp it up several levels.  So if you feel like getting out of town for a night, head north- guaranteed good times.  Tickets available here (and maybe at the box office, but it will most likely sell out before then).  See you up there!

Things To Do In San Diego: March 20-21, 2013

It has been a great week so far, and it is only getting better as we move along. I finally got out of my house over the weekend, got to check out Ivan & Alyosha on Monday, and spent my Tuesday babysitting Zane with a fun day at Balboa Park. There are some great shows coming up, so hopefully you get out and enjoy some sunshine then follow up by tickling your earholes with some live music. I have some posts bouncing around my brain, so hopefully I'll find some time to let the thoughts run through my fingertips for some rants and diaries and such.

Show Preview: Ducktails @ The Void Wednesday March 20, 2013

It is quite common for independent musicians to become involved in multiple projects. Such is the case with Matt Mondanile, guitarist for New Jersey based indie rock band Real Estate. Many fans of that group may be unaware that Matt is the creative tour de force behind Ducktails, a similar sounding project with a rotating cast of support musicians. Matt and company are touring the West Coast after a successful run at SXSW. Having recently released his latest full length, The Flower Lane, it has become readily apparent that Ducktails has evolved into more than simply a 'side' project. The songs have a wonderful flow, though sometimes drift from the plotted course. The album is his best work to date, and warrants seeing Ducktails perform in the live setting. San Diegans will get their opportunity to witness Matt and his cohorts at the newly named The Void (Eleven) on Wednesday (3/20).

BRMC // TRANSFER Tour so far...

LA to London to Liverpool to Dublin to Belfast, where we started our tour in support of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and things seem to be moving right along.  It's been a long journey to get here but it feels as though we've hit a good stride.
Irish crowds were warm to us despite it being our inaugural voyage there.  After the two shows, (Belfast, Dublin) we headed back to England and found out that our show in Istres, France had been cancelled due to weather.  Also learned that our friends that had been on tour in the area of the storm on had been stuck on the side of the road in the snow for 11hrs before it finally let up...so it appeared as though we had dodged a bullet.  It also afforded us a few days to situate in London and catch up with some old friends.
We headed out to catch the Euro Tunnel at 3:30am to get to Paris for the two sold out nights at Le Trianon.  Amazing venue and awesome crowds.  Check the live version of White Horse below:
 

It's been an incredible ride so far, and the BRMC camp through-and-through is absolutely top notch.  Their new material is fantastic and the performances are beyond awesome.
It's a real treat for us to tour with one of our favorite bands and I gotta say, if you have the opportunity to see them on this tour, take it.  You won't be disappointed.

Show Preview: Ivan and Alyosha at the Soda Bar Monday Night

The band Ivan and Alyosha initially piqued my interest due to their Literature-major-baiting band name, which is a reference to two of the four brothers in Dostoyevsky's Brother Karamazov.  And please think of me when you answer that Jeopardy question and sound smart in front of your friends.  Well my curiosity brought me to the Soda Bar a while ago and I was immediately charmed by their pop-hooks embedded in some solid folk rock.  So I came back for more the next time they were in town and wasn't disappointed again.  And now tomorrow night they will be bringing a new album's worth of songs to make your and yours swoon in delight.  All the Times We Had has been on constant rotation for me in anticipation of the show, so make sure you come to the Soda Bar Monday night.  Tickets are available here and Lemolo and Soda Pants are opening.  Check out the a live performance of their new single "Running for Cover" below.

Things To Do In San Diego: March 16-19, 2013

I'm going slightly out of my mind this week. Health always comes first, but when you think something is no big deal and then it kinda is, it's a knock down for sure, especially when you otherwise feel okay. I've been stuck at home for a couple days and Darren has been incredible, going above and beyond what anyone has ever done for me. I should be back to normal soon but until then, I love and appreciate Jeff and Nate and Elliott and Transfer and all the other blog contributors who are keeping all of us abreast of things going on in the scene. You might also be interested to know that Anthology's auction was postponed and my friend Pete informed me that Flying Elephant has been sold and will no longer host live music, so I'll keep you posted if I hear anything else. Be safe out there tonight at tomorrow...there will be DUI checkpoints all over. Darren is out driving his taxi late tonight, too, so if we're friends enough that you have my number, feel free to text me and I can pass along his number. Show Preview: Richard Buckner @ Soda Bar Sunday March 17, 2013

Alt-country troubadour Richard Buckner will be making a rare appearance in San Diego on Sunday,  capping off a beautiful St. Patrick's Day. Currently residing in Brooklyn, Richard is currently completing his West Coast tour playing songs from his most recent album, Our Blood (Merge records). Five years had passed since his last release. A soundtrack was written but never came to fruition. Though nothing jumps out when listening, it is the mood that is cast by the well traveled singer. Each of his albums  is a little different, but his voice remains constant. This is what draws the listener to his work, and his cult-like fans know there is a passion that Richard shares with those familiar with his songs. The next chapter will be the yet to be released Surrounded. Hopefully those of us in attendance will get to hear a preview of some songs from this upcoming album. The show tomorrow will lean to the acoustic side, while the headliner will probably be seated during the performance. This is a Casbah Presents show and is 21+.

Frightened Rabbit w/ The Twilight Sad @ Belly Up- 03.12.13

 This past Tuesday was Scots night at the Belly Up as a pared-down The Twilight Sad and indie rockers Frightened Rabbit mad a trip across the pond for yet another US tour.  More words and pix after the jump.

Saturday: March For Transit!

There is constant momentum in this city and county to get things a-changing when it comes to complete streets, making the city more bicycle and pedestrian friendly, and fixing our transit system. With a mayor focused on neighborhoods and making San Diego more bicycle friendly , a council that just approved a resolution to prioritize bicycle  infrastructure,  and SANDAG working on new bicycle corridors, everyone should tune up your old two-wheeler and take it out for a spin. I'm currently immobilized and confined to my bed for a few days, but I'm going to do everything I can to make it to this event. Maybe Darren can push me in a shopping cart or wheelchair. You can skip the St. Patrick's Day parade and just hit the festival instead. This is the future of San Diego we're talking about!!

Things To Do In San Diego: March 13-15, 2013

I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to tonight's #24HourDate with Darren. I haven't been feeling really great lately, as I mentioned when I decided to skip out on SXSW, and once again learned that when your body speaks to you, you should always listen. I feel a million times better with a simple antibiotic and can hopefully get back to all the backyard ping-pong playing, arrow shooting, tennis playing, and bicycle riding that this weather warrants without getting tired after the most benign activity. We don't have anything major planned, but we will be at the College Area Community Council Meeting to Discuss Montezuma Road at 7, will probably seek some sushi or other yummy dinner, and maybe head to Soda Bar or the Casbah to catch a show. I hope your Wednesday is as good as I expect mine will be. Wednesday through Friday archives are after the jump.

Show Preview: Frightened Rabbit at the Belly Up Tavern tonight!

I'm honestly surprised this show is not sold out yet.  Frightened Rabbit deserved accolades for their spectacular album Winter of Mixed Drinks and now they have followed that album up with (in my opinion) flawless Pedestrian Verse.  Continuing the tradition of sad Scottish bands, Frightened Rabbit pumps up the rhythm to have you boogying to their songs of depression and doubt.  The Twilight Sad opens the show and tickets can still be purchased here. Show Preview: The Hush Sound play Anti-Monday League for the Casbah

It has been a long time since the Hush Sound has been on my radar but I am glad that they're bringing their jangly tunes back to San Diego.  I first encountered the four piece band sometime in 2005 when they were opening for Fall Out Boy, All American Rejects, Hawthorne Heights, and From First to Last.  But do not hold that against them!  The split vocals of Bob Morris and Greta Salpeter and bubbly rhythms brought from the piano and guitars always stood out as simultaneously honoring the past while looking forward to trends that are only recently popular.  If you're a fan of the Head and the Heart and the Silent Comedy, then the Hush Sound is worth a listen.  Tickets can be purchased here. Things To Do In San Diego: March 10-12, 2013

So it looks like SXSW is just not in the cards for me after all. I didn't really plan well enough, couldn't lock in accommodations or budget the cash to travel for a whole week, but remember when I scorched my face off a couple months ago? Well, there's some residual issues with my eyes that make it a little uncomfortable and I don't think 16 hour days of shows is the best idea, so hopefully I can get it checked out so my eyes don't look like I'm always crying or that someone punched me in the face. (I'll be paying back those few donations that did come in).  It's not a big deal, but the cool thing is that Jordan and Jeff prepared like I was going away so I've got two weeks of listings ready to peruse as you wish. The good news is that while everyone else is tweeting and Facebooking about SXSW, we still have plenty to keep us entertained here in San Diego, starting with an early Joshua James show tonight at Soda Bar. It's raining outside and I was happily hanging at home with Darren until I just got some bad news. SoundDiego submitted late to SXSW so we didn't get badges or even wristbands. That might be a little frustrating, but I'm gonna make the most of it and still plan on heading to Texas on Monday. Thanks to the two of you who donated to my trip already. Thursday: Hey Marseilles! Canceled at Soda Bar

Just a quick note that tonight's Soda Bar show has been canceled. The headliners, Hey Marseilles! have an ailment and their tourmates, Deep Sea Diver decided to stick with Hey Marseilles in LA. Refunds will be issued through the Casbah's ticketing site, Frontgate.

San Diego. We are very sorry but we have to cancel tonight's performance at Soda Bar due to an ailment in the band. As you may have heard Matt lost his voice in Los Angeles last night and it has not returned. We hope to be back very soon and make this up to you.

Show Preview: Frightened Rabbit @ Belly Up Tavern Tuesday March 12, 2013

Having just watched a live in studio performance on KCRW.com from our favorite Scottish lads, Frightened Rabbit, I felt compelled to urge those who are unfamiliar with the band to find out what you have been missing. Having just released their fourth studio album, Pedestrian Verse, it is readily apparent the band has renewed itself once again. Scott Hutchinson (lead singer) revealed a different process was used for this album. All the band members shared in the writing and the result is their most complete album to date. A sixth member will be seen during the upcoming tour, which finds its way to Solana Beach next Tuesday, en route to the annual music conference in Austin (SXSW).

Frightened Rabbit delivers passionate, uplifting performances each night. I have lost count of the number of times they have played here, suffice to say I never tire of seeing them perform. Expect to hear many songs from the new album plus some favorites from the past. Hopefully this tour will enable them to grow their audience, for I cannot think of a harder working band more deserving.

Things To Do In San Diego: March 7, 2013

I told you yesterday that I had some news I wanted to share with you. At the beginning of the week I had pretty much given into the idea that I wasn't going to make it to SXSW this year. But as the night moved on (and as far too many drinks went down the hatch), I pretty much changed my mind as a bunch of things sort of aligned. So here's the deal: I found a ride to Texas with my friend and Casbah coworker Graham and his roommate. I'll be leaving on Monday and returning the following Monday. Fear not, your listings will still be here and I'll be updating often from the road, but what it also means is that it's that time of the year where I solicit my faithful readers for donations to make the trip feasible. With insane gas prices, I'm gonna make a serious dent in funds, and I'm going to have to find lodging for a couple nights outside of the hotel I'm sharing with my SoundDiego editor. The past two years I was overwhelmed by your generosity and literally every dollar will help, so if you find this site useful, please consider a small donation. Safe Biking For San Diego

It's no secret that I haven't operated a motor vehicle for about 4 years now. Even before my car kicked the bucket, I rode my old $25 Craig's List bike a lot and used it in my commute when I was working downtown. Unfortunately, there was a gap of a few years that I didn't have a reliable bike, but I attended my share of CCDC meetings to advocate for safe bicycle riding downtown. The CCDC no longer exists, but it is pretty amazing to enter a new era of city politics where the Mayor and the City Council all support safe riding. With SANDAG's cooperation, because of the TransNet tax that we all pay for complete road infrastructure improvements, it looks like things are really happening. You can see the evidence by increased signage, sharrows, bike lane improvements and connections made along the San Diego River among many other projects.

The inclusion of safety for pedestrians, public transit, and bicycling along with cars is the distinction of a "complete road" and it is really exciting that EVERYONE can have a say in the process. Yesterday the City Council passed a resolution to prioritize bicycle infrastructure. While they didn't dedicate any funds to that end, that the subject is on people's minds is a great benefit to everyone across the city. So maybe I'm a johnny-come-lately to some of the politics and activism, but I thought I'd share some links, video, and let you know that TODAY (Wednesday, March 6, 2013) there is an open SANDAG meeting at Sunset Temple, behind Claire De Lune, to discuss actual routes for what they're calling the North Park-Mid-City Regional Bike Corridors Project.

Community Advisory Group: A community advisory group has been formed to provide in-depth input on the design and serve as the community liaison from kick-off to completion of The planning phase. The group will meet four times at key project milestones. Meetings are open to the public – all are welcome to attend. Here's the AGENDA

ITEM DESCRIPTION:
To consider and adopt resolution prioritizing bicycle infrastructure improvements to enhance public safety in the City of San Diego
COUNCILMEMBER ZAPF'S RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt the following resolution:(R-2013-456)
Declaring that the City of San Diego supports prioritizing citywide bicycle infrastructure improvements which enhance rider safety, provide transportation options, and benefit the greater public as our region steps forward and progresses.

"Localchella" Shows Coming to San Diego in April

While the folks at Goldenvoice celebrate the second consecutive year of both Coachella weekends having sold out in the desert, there is plenty to get excited about here in San Diego. Playing back to back weekends has afforded those bands playing Coachella to book shows during their time off in between (weekends). Since most of the shows booked here will likely sell out, I thought a brief rundown would help those who are undecided purchase tickets while they are still available.

Mike’s Weekly Pick: Stone Foxes @ The Casbah Wednesday March 6, 2012

Six words to describe why you should be at the Casbah on Wednesday night: swampy stompy funky rootsy bluesy rock

A short, but to the point directive. Too short? Fine, I’ll elaborate just a little. If there is one show to see this week it’s definitely The Stone Foxes. These cats from San Francisco put on a great live show, with lots of shout-a-longs, stomping and general bad-assery. Peep the video below for “Everybody Knows” from the recently released Small Fires for a little taste.

 It will be loud and raw. It will be swampy and stompy. There will most certainly be large quantities of beer and whiskey consumed. It will be a great night. Locals Family Wagon and The Paragraphs support.

Photos & Video: Casbahmania 2013

One of the best lineups so far this year happened at The Casbah a couple weeks ago with Transfer, The Nervous Wreckords, The Palace Ballroom, and Boy King. All immensely talented bands but also all keeping quite busy. Transfer headed out to support Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in Europe, TNW will be back with a new video  next month for "Let Them All Talk" and meanwhile, Brian & the Louis XIV boys reunited to support The Killers also in Europe. The Palace Ballroom has a half-dozen sweet gigs over the next two months and are set to release the new video for their album title track "This Is The Plan" in April. You can catch Boy King this weekend at Seven Grand.

Monday Philly power poppers Free Energy headline Soda Bar with their sophomore release, Lovesign, in tow...London singer/songwriter Marcus Foster plays the intimate Casbah...

Aussie indie pop band Gold Fields will be bringing their tour to the Casbah on Tuesday with A Silent Film (UK) and Royal Teeth (Louisiana) opening...dancing shoes recommended...

The Stone Foxes headline The Casbah on Wednesday with their infectious brand of blues rock...

On Thursday March 7 Hey Marseilles returns to San Diego playing songs from their forthcoming album, Lines We Trace...Deep Sea Diver opens making this a must see show...

Friday is loaded with viable options, such as LA genre defying band Fol Chen previewing songs from their upcoming album at the Casbah...UK rockers The View take over the Soda Bar with Said The Whale recently added to the bill...

European female duo Boy play an intimate show at The Loft @ UCSD on Saturday...this band is generating a lot of buzz, and the music is the reason...highly recommended...

Sunday brings a great double header our way...start with an early show at Soda Bar featuring Joshua James and Noah Gundersen...finish with local goodness at the Casbah with The Silent Comedy and The Heavy Guilt...

Rosey's Diary: February 27-March 2, 2013

I've been writing online in one form or another since about 1997, and over the years I've battled with this theory that it is good to write personal stories, but to learn how to separate that from the private not-for-sharing stuff. I really have few filters, but when it comes to my relationships, it is challenging because while I want to share my joy, I have to be super-sensitive to the object of my affections not give them a life in public that they don't want. Thankfully Darren is a really good sport. Though my diaries and social check-ins often miss large gaps of time when you probably just assume I'm sleeping,  we are fortunate that we get to spend a lot of time together everyday. Still, because of work and family obligations between the two of us, there is only one night every two weeks where Darren and I get to have what I've referred to as our #24HourDate nights.

Wednesday was Darren's birthday and after my amazing birthday with him back in September after only dating a short while, I felt some pressure to make his epic, especially with (or in spite of) his reluctance to even acknowledge the occasion. So we just went with an upgraded #24HourDate. If you wanna hear about it, keep on reading after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: March 2-4, 2013

What a glorious weekend, huh? The church across the street from my house has a big digital marquee that said it was 83 degrees today as Darren and I rode bikes to the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Hillcrest for the Call to Action Against Gun Violence. I'm now laying on my bed debating whether or not to go out tonight, but wanted to update quickly because I forgot about the warehouse show tonight at Cerberus Motorcycles (on the corner of Euclid and University near the Tower Bar), and I just got word from Mr. Mays that Starfucker tomorrow is officially sold out. There aren't a lot of tickets left for Surfer Blood either, so if you plan on going to the Casbah tomorrow, you should buy your tickets in advance. If you happen to be home tonight, my interview with Ra Ra Riot will air on SoundDiego Live after SNL (1am) on NBC 7/39. Saturday through Monday archives are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: March 1, 2013

This weekend has sooo many good shows by night, but if you pay attention to the forecast, this is also going to be a summery weekend in San Diego, so bust out the bike or the tennis racquets or the golf clubs or the hiking shoes and enjoy all of the things this amazing city has to offer. Personally I'm hoping for some long meandering bike rides through the city topped off by some killer shows that will see me traversing the city from the Belly Up to Casbah to Soda Bar and more Casbah.
