Rosey's Anniversary party preview

My computer was dead for a couple weeks, but I'm back up now and trying to get caught up. Here's a quick preview from Rosey's SD:DialedIn Anniversary party.

Susie Ghahremani (boygirlparty.com) & Michael were chatting with her when I came by for a photo, presumably about how great Rosey's hair looks.

Full post soon!

Introductions/ The Queen's Guard, Oh No Oh My, Pomegranates @ Casbah- 11.17.10

First off, let me introduce myself as the newest member of SD Dialed In. Hi there. Nate Vandermeulen- pleased to meet you. I've been bouncing around San Diego for the past eight+ years and actively combine two of my biggest loves in the form of concert photography, though only for my own record until now.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rosey recently after frequenting this fine site for some time and would like to thank her for inviting me to contribute my humble offerings to an established, well respected music blog. I look forward to keeping my finger on the pulse of SD's live music scene and sharing what I can. If you see me in my stupid glasses with a camera glued to my face at a show, feel free to say hell0 (or tell me to get the hell out of the way as the situation warrants).

All off that taken care of, here we go...

This past Wednesday at the Casbah, San Diego rockers The Queen's Guard warmed up the stage for Austin- based Oh No Oh My and Cincinnati- based Pomegranates. All three bands were playing in promotion of recently- or soon-to-be released albums which are very much worth checking out.

New Music Tuesday: New Mexico's Have You Met My Friend? Out Today

I love when my San Diego friends start to break out of San Diego. Everyone locally knows that Apes of Wrath were firing up the San Diego scene for a long time, but as New Mexico they've certainly gotten themselves noticed beyond our little town. Today the band celebrates the release of their debut EP Have You Met My Friend? It's available everywhere...iTunes, bandcamp.

To celebrate the release, catch them this Saturday, November 20th, at Tin Can with Grand Tarantula, Scruffles, and Mrs. Magician. The show is only five bucks and starts at 8pm.

You can watch a session of the band from Pinpoint Music below.

I will also be offering up more Dawes prize packages and I've got some tickets to give away for next week's Black Angels/Black Mountain show at the Belly Up.

Jeff's Weekly Pick: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin @ The Loft Friday November 19, 2010

With one of the more unusual and lengthy band names on the current music scene, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is currently touring to promote their third studio release, Let it Sway. The major difference in this album from its predecessors lies in the production, as the band enlisted the help of Chris Walla, and the results are immediately evident. Sometimes a band can be guilty of trying to do too much instead of primarily focusing on the music itself. It is important to note that this is a group comprised of high school friends and is still young by industry standards. The latest release doesn’t try to overdo anything and the result is a pleasant listen throughout. How this translates to the live show will be interesting to watch. A young band playing in front of a young audience just might be the perfect recipe for a fine night of music. A great way to kick off the weekend at The Loft, the intimate venue at UCSD.

The Lonely Forest sets the stage.

Mo-vember: Support Prostate Cancer Research

I hope it is very clear that I hate being photographed. I realize I am not photogenic and it takes a lot for me to post a photo of me and my three chins, but I tried to find a better picture of Kristian's stache and they were all inferior. ALL cancers suck. I'm not the only one who has lost dear friends and family to various cancers, but it's really important for all of us to get checked on the things that are terribly awkward to think about. Everyone knows that men hide from the doctor a little bit more than us ladies, and it's especially important to be tested despite the discomfort. My BFF Kristian, who you can get to know and love in his new position as a bartender at URBN North Park, is supporting a cause and you can help him out. I love this boy with all my heart and we've been friends since he was a mere freshman in high school and I'm telling you to support him and his facial hair and all his awesomeness, and mostly because I'm 34 and I know more people who have died of cancer than I want to. And so has Kristian. And so have you.

I kinda hate that this is a form letter, but I tell you that it covers it all, so if you have the spare change to throw in, please do so. And if not, well, I'm broke, too, and we hope that our philanthropic friends can compensate for the rest of us. I mean, seriously, LOOK AT THAT MUSTACHE!

Sooo, as some of you know, I can grow a pretty sweet mustache, and for those
that don't know, I can grow a luxuriously, thick yet soft, world-class upper lip
warmer! On November 1st I committed mustache genocide and shaved off my hairy
masterpiece for the sake of raising money for prostate cancer research.

This Movember I’ve decided to donate my face to raising awareness about
cancers that affect men. My commitment is the growth of a moustache for the
entire month of Movember, which I know will generate conversation, controversy
and laughter.

I’m doing this because:

· 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in his lifetime
· 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime

This is a cause that I feel passionately about and I’m asking you to support
my efforts by making a donation to support the great work of the Prostate Cancer
Foundation and LIVESTRONG. To help, you can either:

- Click this link and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account
- Write a check payable to Movember, referencing my name or Registration Number 742396 and mailing it to: Movember, PO Box 2726, Venice, CA 90294-2726

The money raised will help make a tangible difference to the lives of others, through the world’s most promising prostate cancer research and LIVESTRONG’s programs that support young adults and their families battling and surviving cancer.

For more details on how the funds raised from previous campaigns have
been used and the impact Movember is having please visit here.

Things To Do In San Diego: November 12-14, 2010

Sorry I haven't updated but the home wi-fi decided to fail for the last two days. I think it is still a problem but hopefully a tech will fix it with my appointment this weekend. "Will there be an adult over 18 present?" Um, yeah, do I have to have clothes on? This also means there are probably several events I missed, so shoot me an email or leave a comment and I'll check the shit out on my brand spankin new smart phone. Anyway, weekend listings are after the jump, and for good measure, I'm gonna repost the San Diego Beer Week links. By the way, I won a ticket to brunch at the Pearl Hotel on Sunday...it's a Ballast Point event. If anyone is going, hit me up? Or if you wanna go, I can hook you up with a discount.

Beer Week stuff can all be found at SDBW.org, San Diego Beer Blog, and West Coaster.

Guest Review: Best Coast, Sonny & The Sunsets, Dirty Beaches, D/Wolves

(ed. note: When the Best Coast show sold out earlier this week, I got a grip of emails and texts asking if I had any hookups for the show. If I could hook everyone up, I would, but capacity is capacity. I did however convince Kyle that I could get him in, in exchange for writing about his experience at the show. I think he did a pretty good job, and since I was outside with d/wolves from the end of their set to the beginning of Best Coast, I appreciate that he filled in the blanks. I shot a lot of video but my wi-fi has been failing, so I'll upload as soon as I can get my connection to last longer than 6 minutes. Thanks again to Kyle Lynch for the review.)

Last night was spent with some of my newest and most loved friends. After DJing at Bluefoot for an hour or so, myself and my lady headed down to The Casbah for the Best Coast, Sonny & The Sunsets, Dirty Beaches and D-Wolves show. After pounding a tall can in the car it was time to head inside, we caught the very end of D-Wolves who are now starting to really catch a buzz in San Diego and I expect them to start catching on in Orange County and LA as well.

Mid show smoke break, some hellos and hugs exchanged with all the fantastic people in attendance and it's time for Sonny & The Sunsets. Complete with a white background they took to the stage and immediately had the crowds attention as the colors changed from pink to green and back. Sonny's name couldn't be more spot on, they radiate beach pop that brings to mind buzzy days at the beach with friends and summer bbq's. Their San Francisco influences are all there, the jangle pop that has over taken them and now has that town a flutter is there, the hints of John Dwyer is there and my love for this band is too! Seriously if you get a chance to, go see this band! They deserve every good review, new fan and all the praise they've gotten.
On to the Atari Lounge for Montreal based Dirty Beaches...kind of ironic huh? This was my second time seeing him and he did not disappoint. A one man band armed with just a guitar, backing tracks, killer dance moves and the swagger of Elvis Presley himself! One solid set that included the crowds favorite hit "True Blue" definitely had me dancing and ready for Best Coast.

More drinks, more smokes, more hugs, more laughs and it's time for the headliner. This year has been huge for Bethany so I won't even bother with that. The white background has now been transformed into a 60's liquid projection show that provided just that perfect compliment to her garage pop songs. I was really excited that she brought out "Sun Was High" and "Far Away" two personal favorites of mine but clearly the crowd was awaiting they're faves from the new album. With almost every single girl in attendance singing along to "Boyfriend" and "When I'm With You" this show was now a full blown lovers party. Best Coast delivered on every plain even amidst hecklers and chants of "Garfield" in reference to her cat Snacks who was not in attendance but the boyfriend was, I give the night an A!

Contest: See The Nervous Wreckords & Italian Japanese Wednesday Night at the Belly Up

The Nervous Wreckords have been wrecking up the scene. If you've seen them, you know they deliver a great live show. If you haven't yet seen them, well, you probably aren't reading this site on a regular basis. I've got three pairs of tickets to give away to their show on Wednesday night at the Belly Up. Send an email to sddialedin (at) gmail with the subject "Nervous". Include your first and last name and a phone number. I'll pick winners at noon on Wednesday. You'll be notified and your names will be on the guest list. Do it to do it!

Things To Do In San Diego: November 9, 2010

I never really understood what happened when someone 'throws out their back' and though it's happened to me once before, you forget what it's like until it happens. You don't have to be doing anything particularly strenuous. I had been cleaning, had done 5 loads of laundry, was just about to get ready for my night out, then *BAM*. I was putting shoes away in my closet, lifted a pile of stuff with one hand to shove the shoes into the shelf with the other and suddenly I'm thinking I might end up sleeping in my closet. Fortunately it wasn't that bad, I can still move and do stuff, it's just when I move a certain way, then I'm hunched over like I'm 90. I'm not gonna let it stop me though, just don't make too much fun of me if I look like a grandma who just got off a horse.

Don't forget the Beer Week stuff can all be found at SDBW.org, San Diego Beer Blog, and West Coaster. On another note, this week at the Casbah is packed with great shows. Best Coast is already sold out. The Silent Comedy is close to selling out. Friday's Margot & The Nuclear So and So's and Saturday's show with The Soft Pack and Kurt Vile will likely sell out if they haven't already. A lot of times you can wait till the day of show, but this week, I wouldn't recommend it. Check out the calendar and buy your tickets now.

Videos: My Morning Jacket, OAT

Last night I attempted to organize some of my photos from the last few months, and I came across some video I shot at the My Morning Jacket show a few months ago. I decided to upload it though the camera wasn't very stabilized, and I had to keep moving it around to get the autofocus to work, but the sound is pretty fantastic, so there's that. I guess I've been in an MMJ mood since stumbling across Dylan Leblanc, who to me sounds like a cross between MMJ and Ryan Adams. I'll post a video of his below and you can decide for yourself.

Contest 2: Dawes Prize Pack & Concert Tickets

A couple weeks ago I posted my first contest for Dawes. Last night, I got an email from a friend thanking me for turning him on to the band and it remingded me that I have three more prize packs to give away. It includes the full length CD, a split 7" with Cory Chisel, and two tickets to the show.

If you're interested in seeing Dawes at the Casbah on 11/27 (and are 21+) and would like to enter to win, send me an email sddialedin (at) gmail with the subject "Dawes" and tell me why you wanna go, what song you can't wait to hear live, how you never get out because of your baby, what your Thanksgiving weekend plans are, whatever. Just no broke hard luck stories. Contest entries roll into the next giveaway, too, so you have more chances to win. I'll run this one through Sunday. Winner will be contacted on Monday.

I'm gonna repost this video because I got the best comment on YouTube. It said, "i cried the first time i heard this... amazing...and i'm a grown man!"
I hope this song has the same effect with you.

You can see the whole YouTube playlist on the last contest page here.

Review: 10.28.2010 Viejas Arena: Gorillaz with N.E.R.D. (No One Ever Really Dies)

(ed. note: You all know and love Tim Pyles, and while he has his own site getting sorted out, he volunteered to write about the Gorillaz show for sddialedin.com We actually have a bet. I was sure that Gorillaz played 4th & B in 2002 but Pyles seems to think I'm making it up. )

Gorillaz visited San Diego for the first time recently and as a frequent concertgoer this show blew any and all away! Not only is the band fronted by Damon Albarn (Blur), the touring band now features two members of The Clash; Mick Jones and Paul Simonon. Plus, you add in guest appearances from De La Soul, Little Dragon, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Rosie Wilson, Bobby Womack, Bootie Brown, Bashy and Kano, well magic ensues. Los Angeles had the privilege of seeing Lou Reed join with them the night before, but that's not San Diego. You could even say Snoop Dogg and Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays were on stage, but it was the huge screen behind the actual band.

I was so very excited about this show, having seen the band in LA back in 2002 on the first tour. During that first tour the band performed behind two screens that had projected visuals and animations, you only saw shadows of the actual players. The band has done limited touring since 2002, a few dates in 2006 (NYC & Manchester, UK) and now this HUGE World Tour in 2010. The band played the latest Coachella, as well. If you saw this show, feel lucky cause it was rare.

The show kicked off with Snoop Dogg on the big screen and just took off from that point on. Each song featured a different guest for the most part, with Damon Albarn as the ring leader. Both Mick Jones and Paul Simonon exuded The Clash cool on stage! It felt more like a show, a production than say a concert where the band plugs in and plays. This was awesome, but never seemed technical or lacking soul.

N.E.R.D. opened to a small house with people arriving slowly, but never let on with Pharrel giving it his all. I'm a fan of both artists and felt it was a dream match-up for a show. The both fall into this neo-Hip Hop thing, but rock too. I always see and hear lot's of colors...

Here's the setlist for Gorillaz:

Orchestral Intro
Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach
Last Living Souls (with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
19/2000 (with Rosie Wilson)
Stylo (with Bobby Womack)
On Melancholy Hill
Rhinestone Eyes
Superfast Jellyfish (with De La Soul)
Tomorrow Comes Today
Empire Ants (with Little Dragon)
Broken (with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble)
Dirty Harry (with Bootie Brown)
El Mañana
White Flag (with Bashy & Kano)
To Binge (with Little Dragon)
DARE (with Rosie Wilson)
Glitter Freeze
Plastic Beach
Encore:
Cloud of Unknowing (with Bobby Womack)
Feel Good Inc. (with De La Soul)
Clint Eastwood (with Bashy & Kano)
Don't Get Lost In Heaven
Demon Days

New Video: Metric "Black Sheep" (Shot at Comic-Con 2010)

Were you one of the lucky ones at the screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World at Comic-con 2010 (at the Balboa Theatre)? Chances are you can point yourself out in this new video from Metric's live performance. I believe this particular screening happened on Thursday night when I was bouncing from the Machete event to the FLUXX Live event, so I wasn't there, but from the looks of things, it was as awesome as it sounded via the streams of tweets.

Crocodiles Record Insound Studio Session

Crocodiles were busy last month in New York before having to call off the rest of their dates due to a family health emergency. The Dum Dum Girls also canceled and my thoughts are with Kristin and Brandon. While in NYC, Crocodiles recorded an Insound Session.
From Insound:
Crocodiles came in to record a session while they were in town for a couple of shows this month. The band laid into three new tracks from their latest album Sleep Forever and one classic cut from Summer of Hate and all four songs came out absolutely fantastic. Get a link to download the other three tracks from the session free with the purchase of Sleep Forever.

I was trying to embed the video, but the code isn't working. You can check it all out here, including the free download of "Mirrors".

SD Beer Week Recaps and Upcoming Events

By now you have probably realized there is a lot of beer in San Diego this week--a lot of great beer. It's Sunday morning and I am still trying to recover from yesterday's San Diego Brewers Guild Festival of Beers where all the brewers in San Diego hold a meet and great at Liberty Station showcasing some of their top beers. It was awesome, by the way.

My weekend actually started on Friday. At 11:30 Lee Chase of Automatic Brewing revealed his latest creation- a Belgian Styled Wit Beer called Wit Lightening. Oh, did I mention it was a keep the glass event and he released Automatic's First Glass design?

From there I headed North to O'Briens for Night of a Million Zillion Speedways. The main reason to go to the Speedway events every year is for the Kopi Luwak Speedway- or in plain English- "the Shit Speedway". There were other great versions of Speedway including a 2009 Bourbon Barrel Aged version and Toasted Coconut Speedway. The line was wrapped around the corner for 9 2 oz. pours. Tom Nickel broke the beers down into flights so the Kopi Luwak wouldn't blow in the 20 minutes like it did last year. My night was still young and I avoided the drinking any pints so I could head south to Downtown Johnny Brown's Barrel Aged Night.

Once I got to DTJB's I found everyone I was expecting to see at O'Briens. DTJBs is a bigger establishment downtown so there is definitely more room to spread out. My highlights from the beer list at DTJBs inlcuded Rumpkin from Avery and Barrel Aged Navigator. Rumpkin is a rum barrel aged Pumpkin Ale that was like a pumpkin pie. I had been looking forward to this beer ever since I saw it in barrels at GABF. Barrel Aged Navigator Doppel Bock is quite simply delicious. I don't remember what type of barrels but the beer has just the right amount aging not to be over cloyingly sweet.

When I finally got around Eleven the following day I head to the San Diego Guild Fest VIP session at Liberty Station. The VIP session this year was sectioned off from the regular entry and got two more hours for drinking and eating. The first portion of food I remember eating was Chef Kyle Bergman's Rogue River Oregon Blue Cheese fritters and drinking Hop Suey from Pizza Port. I don't know if that was an intentional pairing but it worked out well. Kyle will be at the Chef's Celebration Beer pairing at the Torrey Pines Lodge on the 14th. The Smoke Mac and Cheese from Toronado was also one of my favorites. Highlights from the beerfest was Silva Stout from Green Flash (you can still pick this up at Green Flash, btw), Hop Suey from Pizza Port, Angel's Share from Lost Abbey, and Max from La Jolla Brew House. Max is a very drinkable Holiday Porter. If you get a chance, head down there and check out his other beers. A good deal is to watch for groupon, Reader Steals, etc., that are put out for $25 worth of food for like $10 for La Jolla Brewhouse. I have seen them a couple times now.

As for the rest of week, I am still trying to figure it out. I know that on Monday there is gonna be a crazy set of tasters at the Ballast Point Linda Vista Location with a food truck in front and the Yogurt shop next door is making a Yogurt that day from one of the beers. Now, I have to head Eleven for the Liar's Club redux, it starts at 4. You can see all of this week's beer events at SDBW.org.

The Silent Comedy's 2010 Tour Highlights

It's been a busy year for us in The Silent Comedy. It's not over yet, but we decided to put together a collection of some of our favorite moments from this past year (with a couple previously unseen moments from last year's 91X Boo's Cruise thrown in). We've been traveling a lot lately, so this video will give you an idea of what we get up to when we're on the road.

We set the video to one of our favorite songs from our good friends, Fierce Creatures, who will be joining us at the Casbah on November 11th! This show is going to be awesome, so click here to get your tickets now!

Enjoy the video!

San Diego: Dialed In Weekend Events

I sent out an email blast yesterday, but in case you weren't one of my victims, I thought I'd share the events that I'm involved with this weekend.

Thursday Night- The Heavy Guilt at West Coast Tavern. Free. 10pm.

As you may or may not know, I've been booking Thursdays at West Coast Tavern for a few months now and this week I'm especially excited to have The Heavy Guilt playing. For as long as I'd heard the band by name, I never actually saw them perform until one night when 2 of the members set up a small amp outside of the Soda Bar and played for the crowd moving in and out of the bar between bands. I was blown away and quickly made sure to get their info. If you haven't seen them, check out my attached video from that night. The shows are free and they start around 10pm and I recommend arriving hungry because the food at WCT is delicious.

Friday Night- San Diego: Dialed In 4 Year Anniversary at the Casbah. $8. Doors at 8:30pm.

I can hardly believe that it's been four years since I created sddialedin.com. My layout hasn't changed much over the years, but I've always thought that continuous content was my priority. To date I've posted over 4,000 posts and have over 1400 videos on my YouTube channel and have amassed somewhere close to 400 gigs of photos and video, not to mention mountains and mountains of incredible music. It has been a pleasure taking this from just being an online diary to what it has evolved into and I appreciate all of the continued support. To celebrate four years, I've asked my friends in White Apple Tree, Swim Party, and d/wolves to perform. Come rock the Casbah with us. The show is $8.

Saturday Night-The Rumble at Bar Pink. Free. 9pm.

The last event is the final Rumble of the year at Bar Pink. This one features Ume from Austin, and San Diego's Shapes of Future Frames and Raw Moans . As always, these shows are free and feature $3 Trumer Pils. It's been a pleasure being one of the Rumble partners this year so let's go out with a bang and I'll keep you posted about what my friends at Future Sounds, Indigenous, and Planetary have lined up for next year.

Again, thanks for all of your continued support. I look forward to seeing you this weekend.

R.I.P. George Scolari 11/1/1926-10/27/2010

While I did spend some time at Scolari's Office in my time, there is no possible way I can pay proper tribute to George Scolari, so I'll post the information as it was distributed:

To all who remember Scolari's Office
We welcome you to pay your respects to the man who made it possible
George Scolari
11/1/26-10/27/10

George touched our lives in so many ways and left us with such great memories. We will all remember how he loved his Corvette, and no one better park in his space! He loved to play golf, shoot pool, and would drink till he passed out at the bar...but then again, it was his bar! He was one to help others, and launched our local band scene that became known across the country. He allowed so many new talents to touch our lives, and gave us a great place to socialize and make wonderful friends. Please show his family how much he meant to us and enriched our lives. Everyone is welcome to say farewell.

For all you gave us, George, we thank you and will miss you!

Viewing will be on November 3rd from 4-8 p.m.
Goodbody Mortuary, 5027 El Cajon Blvd.
Funeral services will be on November 4th at 10 a.m.
Blessed Sacrament Church, 4526 56th St. (corner of 56th & El Cajon Blvd)
Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetary (off the 94), reception to follow.

It's another election day and I know it's hard to get excited about this election but it is still critical that your voice is heard, so don't make excuses. Just vote. If you're thinking about heading to the Casbah tonight, Aquarium Drunkard is presenting the show and has a contest to give away 5 pairs of tickets, so be sure to enter here. Listings for Wed-Thursday are after the jump below.

Community Alert: South Park Halloween Hate Crime

On Monday, November 1 at 2 a.m., two friends dear to the San Diego music community were jumped in South Park. Daniel C. (Blackout Party, Manchest & Her) and Martin N. (Republic of Letters) were jumped last night outside the 7-Eleven in South Park.

Martin posted this photo and captioned on Facebook:
Great way to end Halloween, jumped by a soldier recently home from Iraq and his friends all because he doesn't like "fags" or people dressed like Freddie Mercury. "So you are a fag."
Hate Crime
2am, Nov 1, 2010
7-11, South Park, San Diego CA, USA
WTF
Martin was treated in the ER and police reports were filed, but the attackers got away. Martin says, "There was a girl there that knew them said he was just back from Iraq and had a pacemaker put in three days ago." The attackers were random and did not know the victims. "They are on the 7-11 video tapes although there are no cameras in the parking lot where it happened." Daniel was thrown against the car with enough force to dent the door. Additionally he says that the three guys and a girl took off in a car while Martin's girlfriend was on a call with 911, but they did get plates.

There was a similar incident the night before. If you have any information at all on the attacks, please call the SDPD at 619.692.4800.

Brawley, Tractormen at Soda Bar, 10/26/10
