CoViD-19: San Diego Zoo Safari Park Gorilla Troop Test Positive for Coronavirus | Capitol Insurrection Timelines Crystallize | LA Warns of 10 Diagnosed Cases Per Minute |

San Diego Zoo Safari Park Gorilla (Taken 7.18.2020)

I was so sad this morning to hear that at least two gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park have tested positive for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Humans are having a hard enough time dealing with the related symptoms, I can't imagine how hard it is to see animals suffering or care for them when they aren't able to communicate the way we are. They didn't identify which gorillas, so forgive the photo, it doesn't necessarily mean this is one of the sick.
As for me, it was a day. A Monday that definitely felt like a Monday. Lots of news, didn't get my usual outside time, didn't sleep super great. There's a lot of reading to get through and I need to sort out my EDD which a couple weeks ago told me I needed to verify my identity and now is telling me that I need to reopen my claim. I know I'm not the only one getting this message who doesn't think they were supposed to, so I'm going to try to be patient and not freak out. Darren got his notification of extensions today, so I'm hoping I just have to wait it out. Anyway, that's my super exciting fun life today. I'll try to make it more interesting tomorrow. At least this week we've got Fanboy as a distraction.

    • Every minute, on average, 10 people in L.A. County test positive for COVID -19, and these 15,000 individuals who test positive each day were capable of infecting others for two days before they had any symptoms or knew they were positive.  At least 10-12% of people infected with the virus end up hospitalized at some point, and more than 1% of people diagnosed with COVID-19 end up dying.
Now is the time to avoid, as much as possible, contact with others that aren’t in your household. When you must go out, to work or for essential services, always wear a mask, keep your distance from others, wash your hands frequently, and bring sanitizing wipes with you to wipe down your cell phone, your car keys, your workstations, the door handles and anything you touch and anything other people are touching.  This is the time to be extremely cautious and very careful.
The damaging impact to our families and our local hospitals from this surge is the worst disaster our county has experienced in decades.  And, as with other terrifying situations, the end of the surge only happens when more people and businesses take control and do the right thing.  The biggest single factor contributing to the surge comes down to the actions individuals are taking. We need everyone to do the right thing – to protect each other so we stop the transmission that is now occurring at epic proportions. -

As transmission of SARS-CoV-2 once again surges across the country, so do the odds that infectious aerosols are being emitted and linger in the air in indoor venues that people frequent. This may, to an extent, explain infections in people who were otherwise “doing everything right” but still got infected.

    • San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Members of our gorilla troop have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The test results confirm the presence of the virus in some of the gorillas and does not definitively rule out the presence of the virus in other members of the troop. It is suspected the gorillas acquired the infection from an asymptomatic staff member, despite following all recommended precautions and COVID safety protocols from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, as well as wearing PPE when near the gorillas. Aside from some congestion and coughing, the gorillas are doing well and remain together. They are eating and drinking, and we are hopeful for a full recovery. Read the full update and FAQ. We ask that you keep our troop and the incredible team of dedicated wildlife care professionals and veterinarians who serve them in your thoughts during this difficult time.
