Jeff's Weekly Pick: Crooked Fingers @ Soda Bar Monday September 6, 2010

If the word indie means independent when referring to a band's record label, then Crooked Fingers fits the description perfectly. Having released five albums since its inception, the North Carolina group is really the project of lead singer/guitarist Eric Bachmann and a constantly changing support cast. The most recent release, Forfeit/Fortune, was sold exclusively at shows and via the Internet. This is an approach which is taken more frequently in the current state of trying to sell music in the computer age. What remains, as always, is the music. In this case, this means albums which feature horns and sometimes prominent guest musicians. Live performances are always entertaining and draw upon the musicians' experience and talent. I realize the last thing that comes to mind after the holiday weekend is attending another show, though this one is definitely worth seeing. Maybe calling into work sick is not such a bad idea after all.

The Mynabirds and Little White Teeth set the stage.
