One of the perks of my job is getting comp tickets to shows and the occasional VIP upgrade or free dinner or other similar benefit. Because these are generally fun, I also have to remember that I work really hard, am pretty much on call 24/7, and I have to almost always be tethered to the web to get such perks, not to mention the implied requirement that I document all of these activities/shows/events for your eyeballs. But sometimes, I don't get the free tickets, and I'm reminded not only how sweet it is when I do, but that this whole site evolved from me being somewhat resourceful and making due with what I have, and a genuine love of music and of San Diego that enables me to enjoy myself no matter my budget. Such was the case last night. Darren really wanted to see St. Vincent but I wasn't about to let him shell out $140 for a pair of tickets when I couldn't source some free ones. Instead, we dropped by Trader Joe's and Point Loma Seafoods for some snacks and clam chowder, busted out my old army blanket, and laid under the stars in the grass of Shelter Island as we listened to the entire concert. It was a beautiful night and just as enjoyable as being inside the show, if not more so. There are always free ways to enjoy this city and it is great to explore. You're paying "sunshine tax" to live here, why not live it to the fullest?
