Things To Do In San Diego: April 16-22, 2019

I was trying to figure out why I just couldn't for the life of me get out of bed on Monday. Eventually, I forced myself up to do listings and now realize that it was a crazy busy week and I'm maybe low-key sleep deprived. On Tuesday, I went to Cirque du Soleil's Volta in Del Mar, on Wednesday we went to see the sea lions of La Jolla, then to the Gulls game, then to see JS Ondara at Casbah and shut the night down at the Office. Friday night I went to the Seals Lacrosse game, and Ssaturday we went to Nova's futsal game, hiked around Chollas Park, went to the San Diego Sockers game, then went to the John Vanderslice show at Soda Bar and shut the night down at Pants Karaoke at the Tower Bar and Sunday was low-key celebrating with my family for my sister's birthday and of course, Game of Thrones (of which we watched twice). So throw in work and driving around for soccer and a regular adult life and obligations and I'm a little burnt. But I got these down and that's a good start. This week I'm planning on both KKB shows, working at Big Thief on Saturday, and hopefully making it to Ben Kweller on Monday. I might sprinkle in a couple more shows along the way, but it's Nova's spring break, so we're also trying to have some family fieldtrips if we can. Listings through Monday are after the jump.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, April 9-Monday, April 15, 2019

These listings are PACKED and I didn't even include Couchella. Between Escalera Fest and Record Store Day activities this weekend, there's so much to look forward to. Last week, we laid low as much as we could...me still with a cough, my dog with her sprained leg, and Darren with his cracked rib were kind of a pathetic bunch. Still, I had a big Wednesday with a little Fiesta Island action with Darren and Fi, and after shot Bad Suns at the Observatory, caught Low Cut Connie at Casbah, and had a little after-show fun at Blonde. Thursday was a big work day and chill family evening, where our only big adventure was walking to Vons instead of driving, and Friday we enjoyed the Multicultural Food Fest at Nova's school, and by night Darren and I went to see Girlpool, Hatchie (pictured above), and Kitten, and closed the night down at Ken Club. I worked at the NP Festival of Beers on Saturday, we tried out Sister Ray's for the first time (the burgers are amazing, but the chili-cheese fries are where it's at), and on Sunday we hung out with my parents to celebrate their 49th Anniversary. Monday is my day to compile all of these listings (which keep growing and growing) but we did adventure to the La Jolla Seals to gawk over all the sweet little pups while Nova was as soccer practice. This week's agenda is a little over-committed, so I might have to trim it, but right now it looks like I'll be going to Volta, the Gulls game, JS Ondara, The Messthetics, the Seals game, Nova's futsal game, John Vanderslice, and Kero Kero Bonito, plus we're still trying to circle back to the desert and the Zoo, which has extended hours through April 21st for Yaycation.  Listings for all this madness are after the jump.

This Week: La Escalera Fest Ocho

I had to kinda dig around to find the info for La Escalera Fest Ocho, which takes over several bars this weekend including The Office, Tower Bar, Bar Pink, Soda Bar, Spaec, and Moustache in Tijuana, so I thought I'd share the actual poster with all the time breakdowns. For tickets and more information, go here. I imagine any last minute cancellations or such will be posted on their Facebook page. And if you're going, please do yourself a favor and walk or catch a rideshare. We don't need a bunch of drunk punks on Jump bikes or Lime Scooters breaking skulls and getting DUIs.

4.20 House Show: Band Argument | Pregnant | Glow! | Chorduroy

Though there are many events happening on 4/20, considering checking out the Band Argument/Pregnant/Glow!/Chorduroy house show.

Members of local band Chorduroy have recently renovated their living room to include a full stage for artists to perform on. After Chorduroy, Glow! takes the stage. Glow! are a relatively new band on the scene, but are making a name for themselves. They only have one song out, but it showcases the potential that they have for future endeavors. Their single, "If It Were Me", welds together Strokes-esque rock form laden with jazzy chords reminiscent of Steve Lacy. After Glow! comes Pregnant, an esteemed experimental rock group from Sacramento spearheaded by D'niel Trudeau. Their latest full length, Duct Tape, is an adventurous and cosmic record that reads as tonally interesting / dense as an Animal Collective or Ariel Pink record. Aaaand they're even better live! Finishing off the night is Band Argument, a local band on the rise who have set out to fuse DIY rock-aesthetics with trigger-happy MIDI carnage. For fans of Palm, Guerrilla Toss, Deerhoof... In between sets, DJ COLDPIZZA will be improvising self described "portal music" with analog instruments such as a 909 drum machine.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, April 2-Monday, April 8, 2019

The other day I read an article about a guy who intentionally wrote fake news and while fascinating and infuriating, the first sentence left me a little stunned.

Jestin Coler seems like your run-of-the-mill middle-aged guy.
The 42-year-old lives on a quiet street in a Los Angeles suburb with his wife and two kids.

Wait, back up. 42 is middle-aged? That's my age, and I definitely don't think of myself as middle-aged, nor do I feel that way. But I guess in a purely mathematical sense it's accurate. But lately I've been feeling younger than ever. We're hiking and walking a ton, checking out favorite spots and discovering new ones, and I've just been trying to lead a less vampire-y life. So last week we went out to Slot Canyon in Ocotillo Wells, except I went out to the Office afterward, and maybe it wore me down because then I was sick for the rest of the week. On top of that, my dog sprained her leg and Darren broke a rib at soccer, so we didn't really do much the rest of the week as we all convalesced, until I had to work at the Irenic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We did get out for a few hours on Saturday we did go to Balboa Park in the morning for Nova's first futsal game then back a couple hours later for a kiddo's birthday party.
This week I'll be downing the Airborne™, shooting Bad Suns at the Observatory, seeing Girlpool at the Casbah, and then hopefully back to healthy enough to get some sunshine.

Wonderfront Is Coming To The Port of San Diego!!

Last week, many of us woke up to a surprise when we saw George Varga's U-T announcing a new festival in San Diego. You can read  his full article here but if you're like me and can't get past the paywall, here's the SoundDiego story about the same event with info on organizers, bookers, and venues.



In a nutshell, the event will take place November 22-24th, 2019 across numerous Waterfront venues and locations with aligned after-parties, including South and North Embarcadero Parks, 5th Avenue Landing, Ruocco Park, Broadway Pier, Seaport Village and more. Organizers are also boasting a 'something-for-everyone' lineup with at least 50 acts already booked. Ticket prices will start at $225 for weekend passes, with lineup announcements expected in April and tickets available sometime in May.

Tragedy Cancels Sold Out Soda Bar Show With Her's

Tonight's sold out show at Soda Bar with Her's is cancelled.

It is being reported that the band, while travelling toward California from Arizona, were involved in a fatal car collision which left 4 people dead; Her's members Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading and their tour manager Trevor Engelbrektson, as well as the driver of the Nissan pickup. Information about the collision can be found here. The band had performed at the Rebel Lounge in Phoenix and were driving west through the night for their Wednesday night gig in Santa Ana at the Constellation Room. The collision happened just after 1am. The collision site was about an hour and 45 minutes into what would've been approximately a 5 1/2 hour drive from Phoenix, demonstrating the perils of exhaustion, impairment, and dangers of the road.

The band had just come off a successful run at South By Southwest and were showing great promise on their second US tour. As the news trickles out, no doubt the loss will have a ripple effect among the music community and fans. A statement from their label is below, as well as a performance from SXSW.

Update: Besides Her's members Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading, the Minneapolis music community is reeling from this news. Tour manager Trevor Engelbrektson was a well known soundtech and TM in the Minneapolis area at venues like Icehouse, The Hook and Ladder, and First Avenue, and leaves behind a wife and two young sons. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

Another week and the poppies that haven't yet been trampled aren't gonna be around much longer. Still, it was a great week. I mentioned going to a Gorilla Birthday Party, and that afternoon, we went to the Japanese Friendship Garden for the Cherry Blossom Festival. On Wednesdays I have soccer duty, so I dropped Nova off and enjoyed Fiesta Island Dog Park with Ficus which is having a superbloom of its own.
On Thursday, I went to Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and Frankie and the Witch Fingers at the Casbah which was a super fun show, then went to see Pkew Pkew Pkew at Tower Bar. On Friday, I took Nova and my nieces to the Seals Lacrosse game, (courtesy of the Krimston family), and on Saturday I went to the field shooting portion of my Mission Trails photography class. That night we went to see Mike Doughty at Soda Bar and then I ran around with Jake, but it seemed like a shit show everywhere we went. My Sunday and Monday were pretty much me trying to catch up with work and bingeing on my shows and I didn't get out of the house much, save for lunch at Yak & Yeti and picking up some holds at the library. This week I'm planning on going to Music Box on Thursday, then I'll be working at the Irenic on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We're hoping to get to Anza Borrego but we'll see if we can pull it off. San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Joanne The Gorilla Turned 5!

Another 'field trip' I treated myself to was at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park last Tuesday. I got an email that Joanne the gorilla had turned 5 years old and they were having a birthday party for her.

Joanne—named in honor of Joanne Warren, the first chairwoman of the Foundation of San Diego Zoo Global—was born March 12, 2014 at the Safari Park’s Paul Harter Veterinary Hospital. Due to complications during mother Imani’s labor, she was born via a rare emergency C-section. Joanne spent 11 days in the hospital before being reunited with her mother and the other members of her gorilla troop. Since then, she’s made a full recovery and can be seen interacting with 2-year-old Leslie and 7-year-old Monroe on a daily basis.
Safari Park animal care staff said now that she is a juvenile, Joanne will have a new job to do. She must learn her new role and how she fits into the troop’s social dynamics.
“Each gorilla’s status in the troop is an important one, for a variety of reasons,” said Peggy Sexton, lead mammal keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “Whereas infants can get away with anything, juveniles are held to a higher standard.” 

The gorillas were super active as they opened boxes and bags, tore down decorations, hunted for peanut butter treats and other snacks, and played with their ice cake full of fruits and vegetables. We usually do afternoons at Safari Park, but I have to say going in the mroning was pretty fun, even though we had to dodge a thousand strollers and school field trips. There are a ton of babies at the park right now if you haven't been in awhile, and over the weekend, Butterfly Jungle opened and runs through Sunday, May 12, so there are lots of reasons to renew your annual membership and get to the park.

La Jolla Seals Pupping Season In Full Swing

It's really easy for me to fall into habits of being a homebody, so I've been trying extra hard to give myself little field trips during the week or find fun things to do when I take Nova to soccer. Each year, I try to visit the La Jolla Seals at least a few times during pupping season, so I decided to hit the beach last week. The Seal Conservancy has counted over 50 new pups born this season, and their recent newsletter was a reminder that two permits are going to come up before the California Coastal Commission this year, one is to save the winter beach closure during pupping season (permit #6-14-0691 A1) and the other is to keep the viewing guideline rope up (permit #6-15-0223 A20) for the 7 non-pupping season months. Sadly, I also saw a deceased pup on the beach, which is a reminder that they're so fragile and why it is so important that we give these beautiful mammals the space and protection they need. Jake Najor and the Moment of Truth to drop "In The Cut"

I was super excited to get a press release about super-talent and one of my BFFs, Jake Najor. The full release is after the jump, but the long story short is that "Jake Najor and the Moment of Truth's new LP In The Cut will be released on vinyl, CD, digital and streaming formats on March 29th via The Redwoods Music." Of course, that's a free event and all ages. 

KAABOO 2019 Lineup

KAABOO announced their 2019 lineup last Thursday and I'm barely getting around to posting it. What can I say? I've been busy.

KAABOO has sold out for the past couple years and the internet gets flooded with fake tickets, so if you wanna go, you should suck it up and buy your tickets sooner rather than later. KAABOO takes place September 13-15 at Del Mar Fairgrounds.

I'm a little embarrassed to say this, but since I had to recreate passwords for basically every account I have on the internet, I was looking at sddialedin.com and realized I have 189 blog post drafts. That means over 189 posts that I started and never shared. Ugh. So you might notice a lot of posts being published of really old stuff from the archives that I never got around to sharing. After losing an entire drive at some point last year and losing my phone last week, I guess I'm just feeling more inclined to archive some things in a place where they won't be lost...at least for now.

So a few weeks I got to shoot Metric at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. It was kind of an ordeal because if you remember, it was raining that night. I had interviewed the band before when they opened for Imagine Dragons at Viejas, and I'd seen them at House of Blues and a couple other times in the past, and I love them so much. Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, March 19-Monday, March 25, 2019

I had such a different kinda week last week. After I stupidly lost my phone on Sunday I was in a bit of a funk- feeling like an idiot and being angry and embarrassed at the same time. So when Monday came around, I was happy to have the task of live-tweeting the Music Awards so I could focus my attention elsewhere. By Tuesday, my new phone arrived and I spent most of the day setting up all my apps and stuff. The rest of the week stayed pretty low key. On Wednesday, I took Nova to her school's talent show, on Thursday I took an awesome photography class at Mission Trails and went to Darren's soccer game, and Friday, we went to Flinn Springs County Park to hike around and explore with the dog on the hunt for Painted Ladies, which seem to be everywhere but impossible to photograph. On Saturday I sold merch for Rhett Miller at Soda Bar, and on Sunday, Nova and I ran around, still on our hunt for butterflies, and ended up walking around the pond at Hendrix Park in Scripps Ranch and then Lake Miramar. That night, Darren and I went to the Casbah to see Moon Hooch and had a blast, and on Monday we went to see the seals in La Jolla while Nova was at soccer. This week should be pretty chill, too, though I guess I've taken myself off restriction so you might catch me out and about. Full listings through Monday are after the jump.

Birch Aquarium Announces 2019 Green Flash Season Lineup

Earlier this week, Birch Aquarium announced their summer Green Flash concert lineup. I haven't been to a show there in a few years, but it is undoubtedly one of the most stunning places to see a show. They set up a stage literally on top of the outdoor tipepools as the crowd filters around the space overlooking the Pacific. Pro tip: the parking is not super close, so save your heels for a special occasion and dress like you'll be standing outside at a concert for at least a couple hours, plus hiking up or downhill, depending on how early you arrive. This year's lineup includes Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, Wild Child, Pine Mountain Logs & Venice, The Mother Hips, and Venice. The full press release and ticket details are after the jump.

I wrote about an old Sharon Van Etten experience at Habitat House for SoundDiego and then had the super pleasure of seeing her at the Observatory on February 28th. Life happens, so unfortunately I wasn't able to catch the opener and I really wanted Darren there, but he had a soccer game at the same time. So it was just me, flying solo, loving the show. At the beginning of the year, she dropped her first record since 2014, Remind Me Tomorrow, and mixed up a handful of new cuts with her old favorites. Additionally, she'll return to her role as Rachel on Netflix's The OA when the second season comes back on March 22nd. Lots of photos after the jump.  

San Diego Music Awards 2019: Winners

I had the pleasure of attending the 2019 San Diego Music Awards on Monday night. I also had the pleasure of live-tweeting the whole thing for SoundDiego, which in retrospect, maybe I should've done as a thread? At any rate, I didn't have a chance to post much of anything yesterday, but I promised I'd share this year's winners.

You can also find the list at the official site, but I decided to post them in the order they were announced instead. When you look at it from this perspective, it makes it interesting, because while many of the performers found themselves winning the award announced immediately after their performances, it wasn't the case with everyone. So, for example, Veronica May and Casey Hensley both performed and won their categories, but the rest of the performers did not--but they're still winners in our book!!

I didn't get to schmooze nearly as much as I would've liked as I was confined to my Chromebook the whole night, but the performances were pretty great, starting with Ariel Levine and closing with Planet B, and Veronica May, Shane Hall, Casey Hensley, Vokab Company, and the Redwoods Revue all getting stage time. Of course, the event sold out with the promise of a Jason Mraz performance, which was actually some Java Joe All-Stars who wrote a special tribute to Jave Joe Flammini, with lots of allusions to smoking weed in the parking lot behind Java Joe's and the years the venue was a staple in its various locations. It was definitely a fun night and the after party at the Casbah was raging, too, but this old lady was tuckered and had to call it an early night. Things To Do In San Diego: Monday, March 11-Monday, March 18, 2019

I feel like a little bit of an overachiever, but over the weekend I realized I'd be spending Sunday between the Casbah for the comedy of Kate Berlant and the Music Box for Better Obliovion Community Center and then all evening on Monday at the San Diego Music Awards, so I spent my Saturday night watching Leaving Neverland and working on this week's listings. So today, you get them on Monday. You're welcome. Truthfully, I'm not really an overachiever...I still have a few shows worth of photos to post and such, but I'll get them up sooner or later. Rosey's Read & Watch List

Last weekend, we checked out the San Diego Bird Festival, presented by the Audobon. The wild parrots made an appearance and made me envious of the multiple-thousand dollar lenses being showcased just inside the exhibit hall. Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, March 5-Monday, March 11, 2019

We had such a good week. As I mentioned, my favorite uncle was in town so we had a lot of nice family time and dinners out, and convinced him to stretch his stay through Friday, just to get a little more time with him. It was also Darren's birthday which, like most guys, he didn't really want to celebrate but there was still lots of cake. I love cake. I got to check out Sharon Van Etten on Thursday, and Darren and I went to Men I Trust on Friday. On Saturday, Nova and I ran around town, hit up the Audobon's Bird Festival in Marina Village, cruised around Fiesta Island then we were invited to see the San Diego Seals Lacrosse game at Pechanga Arena, which was a blast. Loud AF, but really fun. On Sunday, we took the dog back to Fiesta Island to take advantage of how awesome and green it is right now, then we worked at the Irenic for Waxahatchee which was a another great show to close the weekend, then saw Beirut at the Observatory. This week I'll be catching Metric at OAT, Mudhoney at the Casbah, and the SDMA's at the Casbah. I'll probably sprinkle a couple extra shows to fill out the week. Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, February 26-Monday, March 4, 2019

Man, it was so frustrating to get so much local snow at such low elevations and just not have the opportunity to go play in it. But it was a good week overall. My uncle drove from Indiana, so we've been getting some family time together. On Thursday, I went to SoundDiego Live to catch SeaBase and Alex Lilly, but cut out early because I didn't want to miss Houses, who kicked off their first tour in six years at Soda Bar. Totally worth it though still always sad to miss Kolars. On Friday, I got to shoot Kingsbury, Talos, and Aurora at the Observatory, then met up with Darren to go to the Casbah but only arrived for King Tuff's final song of the night. Some people wish headliners started earlier; I'm bummed when they go on before 11. On Saturday Nova had her end of the year soccer party so we laid low that night and Sunday was a TV and pajamas kind of day as we watched the Oscars. Nova's new soccer team has started practicing, so it looks like we'll get back into a more regular routine again. This week, I'm hoping to catch Sharon Van Etten, Men I Trust, Transfer, and I'll work at the Waxahatchee show. Then Monday, if I can stay on goal, I'll get to see Beirut at Observatory. Balboa Park Update: Plaza De Panama Jacobs' Plan is Dead!!

I've been working and compiling and digging through photos for this one for a week, so I'm obviously not reporting breaking news, but last week was a momentous week for San Diego. The Jacobs Plan ("Plaza de Panama Plan")--which included cutting into the Cabrillo Bridge and creating a bypass bridge to a to-be-constructed parking garage--was declared dead. Technically, there was a whole bunch of hemming and hawing that it's on hiatus, that fundraising has ceased, that the major donors had pulled out, that construction expenses exploded, that SOHO and other lawsuits were to blame. The way I see it, SOHO should take credit. Balboa Park Heritage Association and Balboa Park lovers like David Lundin should take credit. Everyone who attended Council meetings, planning meetings, took to social media, called their Councilmembers, wrote Op-Eds and Letters to the Editor at all the local rags against this horrific plan-- we should all be CELEBRATING and TAKING CREDIT. 

There were so many things wrong with the plan, not least of all adding a PAID PARKING GARAGE to Balboa Park. Did you think they'd leave all the remaining spots free? People cringe at the mention of Bob Filner, but he was fundamental in getting rid of the Museum of Art lot, throwing down some paint and bollards and patio furniture, and it changed the park for the better. But in addition to this Jacobs plan already manipulating our reps and the aforementioned reasons, it would've removed the Alcazar lot and which is critical for disabled parking and the archery range, dozens of 100 year old trees, and there was all kind of not-quite-as-published information like allowing sponsored naming rights throughout the park and the fact that the City limited their input to $49 million dollars in bonds because any more would require a City-wide vote. Anyway, all that is dead. What a relief. What isn't dead is that the park still has an estimated $80-$120 million in DEFERRED MAINTENANCE. Where's that generosity of Mr. Jacobs and the Plaza de Panama Committee for that??   

Anyway, this is all good news for all of us. If you love the park, consider volunteering or donating or even just following the actions of Balboa Park Heritage Association, who are trying to prevent proposals like this by setting goals like changing the City Charter to ban paid parking in the park FOREVER and get a chunk of TOT (so-called Hotel Taxes) dedicated to all the deferred maintenance. You can also support Save Our Heritage Organisation, whose preservationists were instrumental in saving this beloved gem.

With San Diego's music scene constantly thriving, there are hundreds of shows I have to miss every year, but I also get the privilege to go to so many--and as it has it, sometimes more than one on any given night--and sometimes I get to go to shows that weren't necessarily on my radar, but I get nudged or turned on to it by a friend and after the show realizing how bummed I would have been to have missed it. Such was the case on Friday night when I went to the Observatory to see Aurora, Talos, and Kingsbury. It was such a mesmerizing show from start to finish, so much so I couldn't be pulled away when it went past 11pm and I knew I'd be missing King Tuff at the Casbah (though we made it in time for 1-1/2 songs and plenty of after show bevvies.

Friday started with Kingsbury, a "synth-pop princess" from LA, whose powerful voice had me thinking about powerful '80s women like Terri Nunn of Berlin or more currently, the sisters of Haim. She's super rad and made a pretty strong impression for the crowd of people filtering in during her set.

I had listened to Talos' latest record one time through before this show, and I was excited they turned out to be a 5-piece because one could imagine the sound being more synthesized or made with fewer players and more pre-tracked sounds. Instead, we got the fury of a full band, though heavily cloaked in hazers and complete backlight.

Headlining the night was Norway's Aurora. She came out in a layered chiffon dress that bounced around and itself was part of the show as she athletically jumped and twirled and made use of the entire stage given to her, after awhile kicking off her shoes and even later, pulling off her socks so she could be completely free. Her voice is stunning when she sings and super sweet when she's graciously thanking the crowd or explaining the context of a song. You should definitely watch her KEXP session and if she ever comes back this way, make it a priority to catch her live.  I'm a bit out of practice with the Canon, but check out some more pics after the jump.

Spring 2019 CRSSD Fest Schedule

I mentioned that I'd update the listings when CRSSD Festival gave the Saturday and Sunday performer breakdowns, and sure enough, I posted listings at 6am and a couple hours later, CRSSD posted to Instagram. Ask and you shall receive. And it's good to know some of you are still reading this site so thanks for bringing the posts to my attention. I'm trying to make more of an effort to post news and thoughts and my ramblings here rather than Facebook, but I realized I failed because I never posted this year's San Diego Music Award nominees and voting has now ended and is only open to the San Diego Music Academy (of which I'm a member), so I guess at this point I'll just wait until Awards night to post all of the winners. Today's listings are brought to you by "Lorena" on Amazon Prime, which kept my fingers typing and my eyes wide open while I worked all night. Definitely a must watch. Last week was some intense San Diego weather, but we braved it to catch Laura Gibson at Grand Ole BBQ and Asado Flinn Springs followed by Broncho at the Casbah. On Friday, I worked The Marias show and followed with Louis XIV at Casbah and closed the night at Black Cat, and Saturday worked the Pedro The Lion show. I was sad to have missed Ron Gallo on Sunday, but family time prevailed. On Monday I spent the day at Casa Beach to see the harbor seals and then my uncle arrived in town so we spent the rest of the night with him. This week is going to be pretty chill, Nova starts soccer again, we've got the SoundDiego live event at Casbah (though I might have to scoot out to catch Houses for a bit), and then I'll have to make some choices for the weekend pending some photo passes coming through. Rosey's Read & Watch List

I'm working on this week's listings but thought I'd share some more links before I really dig in.

First of all, it's pupping season at Casa Beach! I wasn't supportive of the new lifeguard tower at the beach, but I'm here to say I was wrong. It's actually awesome, because now the lifeguards are on an intercom and call out tourists and looky-loos when they're getting too close to the harbor seals. It's actually fantastic and there are at least half a dozen pups already born. I also read that there are a couple caught in fishing line or nets, but Sea World can't quite help them yet because they risk flushing the beach if they try to intervene. I hope this momma gets her neck freed soon. My advice, bring your camera and stay away on weekends. On to the reading after the jump.

Ryan Adams: Heartbreaker Leaves Me Heartbroken

My first ever show at the Casbah was Whiskeytown. My iPod had a seemingly endless mix of Ryan Adams' catalog that I made my friends listen to as we drove from California to Texas for SXSW. He doesn't come to San Diego often, but I think I've been to every show he's ever played here. I deeply cherish Ryan Adams' music.

And this week has fully sucked.

I'm a member of a Facebook group called "Ryan Adams Archive." Most of the conversations are obsessive fans arguing about Ryan's best records or people trying to get their hands on every color vinyl issued of a particular record. But this week has been different. First of all, everyone was buzzing about this super annoying podcast wherein two women comedians talk for two hours about their respective relationships with Ryan Adams, without ever saying his name, but detailing his douchiness and manipulation. I'm not saying what they say didn't happen, it's just that they are annoying AF and I listened to all 2+ hours of the damn thing. But then yesterday morning, Ryan was tweeting about the New York Times and eventually, the bomb dropped.

Awesome Fest Presents CANCELLED! February 15-17, 2019

I love the Awesome Fest peeps and this weekend they've rallied together a new event called CANCELLED!, which of course can be confusing because actual shows are canceled all the time. But despite all of that, you should really get your hands on tickets ASAP because I've never known an Awesome Fest event that didn't sell out in advance and it becomes exceedingly impossible to sweet talk your way into the shows without a wristband. The events are spread between Soda Bar and Space by night, and Bar Pink and The Office by day. Plus, it's super cheap and you've got a three day weekend so you'll have all of Monday to recover from the vast amounts of PBR consumed all weekend. Tickets are $25 for the whole weekend, but you have to buy before Friday (while they last!). Day passes are available, too, for $15 Friday, $20 Saturday, and $15 Sunday.

Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, February 12-Tuesday, February 19, 2019

I had an eventful non-eventful week. It's kind of embarrassing how little I get out of my house when I don't really have to. We did end up driving to the snow on Tuesday, but it was actually too much coming down so we had to book it before the roads froze to ice. We have chains but they're hard to actually put on once the snow is falling and that wind gets blowing. We thought about going back on Wednesday, but I was too upset about the guy who died on the Pine Valley Creek Bridge. On Thursday, Nova had her school spelling bee, and we were super proud of her dedication to memorizing that crazy Scripps word list the best she could in five days. She finished in the top 10 of her school. On Friday, I went to the Alex Cameron show then closed the night at the Ken Club. Saturday I mostly had the day to myself while Darren worked and Nova was off at a hangout/sleepover. With all that time alone at home, you'd think I'd have finished using the KonMari method on my house but it was kinda nice to catch up on some shows, get into a couple new books, and stay lazy and cozy. On Sunday the Casbah staff went to the new location of Grand Ole BBQ & Asado in Flinn Springs which is an awesome spot and stayed packed with people the whole time we were there. It's definitely worth the drive if you wanna make a couple hours of it on a weekend or late afternoon. Then, as I previously mentioned, I watched the entire GRAMMYs telecast. This week, you can find me at Broncho, and then I'll be working at the Irenic for The Marias and Pedro The Lion. I might try and catch some Cancelled Fest, Louis XIV, and Ron Gallo, but it will hinge on how the work week slays me. Listings through Tuesday are after the jump (since Monday is a holiday).

Like so many people pondering Facebook these days, I was wondering if I'd be better off reverting back to the days when all my whims and thoughts were shared here on sddialedin.com instead of on Facebook or social media in general. I love getting Voice of San Diego's weekly review and so I started kinda bookmarking some things I've been reading and noting what I've been watching. I don't know if I'll keep doing it here, but for today, this is what I'm gonna do. In all honesty, I've been stewing on a post like this for a few weeks (months?), but my keyboard is finally fixed, I got a new power cord for my laptop, so my excuses for not writing are diminishing. Billie Eilish Returns! SOLD OUT!

Billie Eilish is returning to San Diego on July 13 to Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at San Diego State. I'm posting mostly because I haven't seen so many young girls crying outside a show because they (a) didn't have tickets or (b) bought fake tickets. This show will sell out. Likely in minutes. Things To Do In San Diego: Tuesday, February 5-Monday, February 11, 2019

This week you get another picture of one of the baby elephants from Safari Park because that's how me and Nova spent our Sunday while everyone else watched, based on the score, the most boring game of sportsball ever. The week was good overall, but rainy and cold. I went to Yacht Rock night on Wednesday then buzzed down to Casbah for The Silent Comedy, and on Friday I went to Cursive and Mineral at the Casbah though it was packed so I pretty much hung out with my buds on the patio the whole night. Monday night it was Still Woozy at Soda Bar and this week is very up in the air as I have two possible photo passes and a whole lotta rain to keep me very motivated to stay on the couch. We shall see how it goes. Tuesday through Monday listings are after the jump.
